Movers were great and hard-working but I did not expect to pay so much. I've used Frank's before for similar move time/distance and paid around $600. This time my final bill ended up being around $1,000. To be fair, Frank gave me the hourly rates quote and I accepted it. I realized prices may have gone up and I was expecting a 3 to 4-hour move similar to my last move, so around $600 to $800. What I did not expect was an additional hour charged for their drive time from Hayward to San Mateo. I don't have my receipts from the last move so I don't know if they charged an hour drive time before. Anyway, movers arrived at 9:45 am and finished around 1:15 pm which should have been 3.5 hours. However, they charged me 4 hours, from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. I was okay with that as I didn't want to be too technical on their time. Add the additional hour drive time and the final total was 5 hours. I realize now that I had some time to ponder it over, I probably should have pushed for more accurate start and end times and questioned why they charged an hour from Hayward to San Mateo. But at the end of a long stressful month of packing and planning, I was just happy that the movers got the job done. read more

This moving company advertises "white glove delivery" but it is a scam. Here is what happened. I was looking for a moving company to move from a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment to another 2 bed, 2 bath apartment 20 minutes' drive away; no stairs, only elevators and some hallway. Everything was boxed up but I needed movers to move my and my husband's possessions and to disassemble our Design Within Reach furniture and put it back together. Frank's was on a list of recommended movers from the Design Within Reach location where we had previously purchased the furniture new, so I went with them. 1. Frank lied about the experience of his movers -- they are NOT white glove delivery at all, and he tried to charge me for an extra mover I did not request. Frank picked up the phone when I inquired and he said his team was familiar with the DWR furniture and would disassemble, wrap up everything and reassemble. He recommended 3 movers and estimated 3-6 hours, with $50/hr per man if I paid in cash, estimate $600-900 hours. He asked me to list out all the DWR furniture we had and other furniture. He said things packed in boxes were no problem. I called the day before to confirm the time and date and to inform him that everything was packed and ready. The morning of, 4 movers showed up half an hour late. They claimed they were sent by Frank. I called him and he assured me multiple times that with apartment moving 4 people would be faster and they could handle it. It became very apparent that none of these movers were professional while glove movers. I have worked with white glover movers and these guys are not it. Nobody had experience disassembling DWR furniture, contrary to what Frank had told me. Only one of them seemed to have any moving experience and the rest were inexperienced, slow, and clumsy. They kept bumping boxes and furniture into each other and into walls of both apartments and I later noticed that a couple pieces of my DWR furniture had serious dings and dents. One mover wasn't pulling his weight and routinely took long bathroom breaks and stood around, and was even vaping. All the movers admitted to having only done a couple moves before this and had other un-related jobs previously. As an example of their inexperience, they ran out of moving blankets just as they were wrapping up the most expensive furniture that we explicitly stated we cared the most about, and we found out later that it was because the blankets were behind a bunch of boxes they had piled in front. They never got them out. Because the movers were so slow, the entire move took 7 hours. This included my husband and me helping the movers move heavy items, such as wrap the heavy, solid wood furniture, move the steel frame couch, and use our own dolly to move boxes ourselves. At the end, Frank's total for the move included 4 men for 7 hours, which was far greater than the $600-900 he quoted me. I complained that the fourth man was not requested and was slacking off and that I shouldn't pay for him. After arguing on the phone for a while, we settled on an amount just above the high end of the quote and I didn't pay for the fourth person. 2. Frank screamed at me on the phone, once even saying "can you shut up for five minutes so I can talk?". I also heard him screaming at his workers on the phone. He was extremely nice when I called to inquire about his services and to confirm moving times, but he got really nasty when I started complaining about his incompetent workers. He screamed "No, no, no, no, no!!!" many times on the phone to me and my husband when we refused to pay the outrageous bill. 3. Frank tried to cheat his workers out of a tip. We agreed to pay a slightly higher amount and add tip on top of it for the workers, in cash. Even though the workers were inexperienced, we appreciated they wanted to put in honest work during these times with COVID. We agreed with Frank on the phone at the end about the cash amount we would pay the movers, and told him the tip amount we would give for them to keep. As my husband went downstairs to pay the workers, Frank called the workers and told them to bill us for the base amount we agreed on PLUS the tip amount, effectively not giving them ANY tip at all. He kept insisting to us that "I'll take care of them" when we said we wanted to tip ourselves, and my husband had to get on the phone with him AGAIN to say that the billed amount was higher than the amount we agreed and would take away tip from the movers. He insisted again that "I'll take care of them" but it was apparent that it wouldn't be the case. 4. Frank provided sub-par equipment to the movers, which significantly added time to the move. I saw the movers struggling with bad quality tape and wrapping plastic. They had several dollies for loading boxes but only 1 padded 4 wheeler for moving furniture. For the amount of furniture I listed out in my email with him, he should have included 2-3, especially since he sent 4 men. read more

We had a great experience working with Frank's Moving Service with our move from a 2 bdrm apartment to a 3 story townhome. From the time I sent my first email to the time we waved the guys goodbye, Frank and his crew were totally on top of things. Great things about our move: 1. I tried getting quotes from Frank and Trans-One moving. Frank picked up, told me he was on a move, and got me an email response at the time he said he would. I spoke with Hector (who was also on a move) who told me to send him an email with the logistics and he'll get back to me. He never did. 2. Bryan, Al, and Jose were awesome. They arrived early (which was really early considering we had a 8am move time), and they hustled up and down all those stairs like the giant boxes in their hands weighed nothing. They also provided us some last minute boxes because we ran out which was really nice of them. 3. I know a lot of moving companies try to take breaks or drive a different route to drag out the moving time, but these guys were right on our tails the entire time. Aside from a 10 minute break 2 hours in (total move time 4.5 hrs), these guys were non-stop helping us haul our stuff from Point A to B. 4. They were super careful wrapping up our things. We were super impressed they were able to carry our 10 person dining room table without having to disassemble the legs - and there were no nicks, dings, or scratches! The last time we tried to move it required a 4 person effort and we took the legs off. I hope to dear God I don't have to move in the near (or distant) future, but when it's time for us to move again, we'll be sure to call Frank. read more

We've used Frank's 4 times for moves over the past 5 years between San Francisco, San Mateo, and Redwood City. Each time we got a fair price, on-time arrival, and courteous service. Frank's was even able to do a move out of our temporary storage unit. During our first move, we found a piece of furniture that had a broken leg after the move (it was already broken). Frank came out and fixed the leg himself and it worked better than before! Ricardo, specifically, is a great mover that cared about ensuring they didn't scratch the walls in our new house. From a recommendation from our new apartment leasing agent, we used Frank for our 2 bedroom move from San Jose to San Mateo. 3.5 stars. They were 30 minutes late - for that, minus one star (one of my biggest pet peeves is being on time). 4 guys moved us for $120/hour... 5.5 hours and $660 later, we were completely moved. They, like any good movers, will take apart your furniture in your old place and set up your furniture in your new designated location. Some of our dining chairs got little nicks because they weren't wrapped in blankets. Understandably, they're not antiques or expensive (one of the movers made a comment to me that at least our furniture wasn't big or expensive), but still... they should've been wrapped... minus half star. Businesses show their true colors when things go poorly, not when everything goes smoothly. The movers broke a very valuable shelf of mine. They denied it, even as we sat and looked at it. That was very, very awkward. I immediate called Frank, who assured me we'd find a resolution. Months later, I'm still getting the run-around. No call backs. No nothing. I would have appreciated an honest, straightforward answer rather than a "Yes, anything to make the customer whole." That's what's the worst part. As a side note, they re-assembled our crib incorrectly, both misplacing parts and not using all the screws. That cost me another $20 to get replacement parts and do it myself. I normally don't care about this kind of stuff, but c'mon -- it's a safety issue. read more

I made the mistake of paying a three man crew by the hour instead of getting a solid quote from Frank... I should have got a quote for everything. Let's start here: I had to push the guys to work hard. If I hadn't, it would have taken them almost two extra hours which would have come out of my pocket. Also, to my frustration, they tried to 'take a break'. Only when I kept moving stuff and gave them some needling did they put out their cigarettes and continued to work. We used Frank's for a move of a 2BR apartment from San Bruno to San Mateo the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The team arrived right on time, got to work immediately and moved everything out of our apartment in just over an hour. They unloaded everything into our new home very quickly, the whole move was complete in about three hours. They did a great job handling all of our artwork, electronics and everything else. They were efficient and professional and the pricing was straightforward and actually less than I expected to pay. How is it you can find a guy that does great work, quotes you a price fair enough that you know it's not about haggling or feeling like you may be getting hosed.... but it's about the relationship, and being able to trust someone because they are a noble, stand up guy who works hard and just wants to make sure you are happy. His prices are better than anyone else's.. I had to get a mattress moved, and it was the first one that didn't feel like a rip off. His theory is that if you are happy, you will come back to him. Frank's was excellent for my recent move from SF to San Mateo. We moved a 2BR apt down two flights and 18 miles to a 2BR house. They brought a three man crew plus a truck big enough for everything. They moved all the furniture and boxes quickly and efficiently. They also did a great job with creatively disassembling furniture when a custom Allen wrench couldn't be located. They shrink wrapped or drop-clothed all the furniture and nothing was damaged. Frank was quick to respond to my initial inquiry and the price was also very reasonable compared to my other quotes ($45 per man per hour + double drive time). Importantly, they finished within Frank's estimate with no hidden fees or charges. I was happy to buy the crew lunch from Rosamunde's (though sad to leave the Lower Haight). Pros: Flat rate service is easy to understand and reasonably priced. Guys showed up on time and were friendly. Frank types in all capital letters for some reason when you email him. Frank, that means you're YELLING. Maybe you are, so in that case, go for it! Cons: Didn't wrap my tv or furniture. However, there were only a few scuff marks once I looked at everything delivered, so I can't complain too much here. Wardrobe boxes collapsed in their truck. The guys they sent for my move today (Carlos, Tom, David, and bossman Frank) were fast, hard working, fun to chat with. I did all the packing the previous night and then they showed up with a new moving truck and quickly moved my 30 or boxes and bulky furniture from my 3rd floor place to my new apartment about a miles or so away in a total of about 3 hours. They had to delay my move by a day because one of the guys had a medical emergency -- but to make up for this they brought a 4th guy (no extra charge) to get the job done more quickly! The little bubble on the yelp add is a little off -- they charge an hourly rate (85$/hour) for a 3 man crew with a 4 hour minimum. However, this rate is really competitive, (the others I checked with were were $120-150/hour). Overall, I really satisfied and will recommend these guys to anyone who needs help moving heavy and bulky stuff! read more

These guys knocked it out of the park! I contacted three movers THREE days prior to having to move my mom to an assisted living facility. Frank responded quickly and was able to accommodate my needs - pick up furniture at two locations and move to a third. The morning of the move, Bryan and Tino called to let me know they were on the way. They arrived on time, shrink-wrapped my furniture, disassembled a bed and reassembled it. So I'm moving items from storage into a truck to take from San Mateo to Wyoming. I had a bunch of heavy items for which I had hired help to put on the truck..my movers cancelled on a Saturday for a Monday appointment. I scramble to Yelp! and find this place. Frank answers his phone on a Saturday night while out to dinner with his family (huge points!)...we talk, text and I submit information on his website. I get a quote on Sunday morning and the workers show up on Monday..on time. Charges: two guys at a total cost of $95 per hour, with a 3 hour minimum. I had about 4 hours of work in 3 storage units..and they finished in 2.5 hours...I gladly paid the minimum and gave them a nice tip. These guys do not mess around. Frank delivered some items for us from Mscape, and because of the care that he and his colleague took in unloading them and placing them in the appropriate places, I asked him if he would do a more extensive and complicated move for us. Extra props for Franks! I moved on short notice (long story). The crew showed up early. Got to see Tino & Ric who helped me on the previous move. I dont know how it happened but I accumulated a ton of extra stuff from the previous move. The prev time my junk filled half a truck this time it filled the entire truck. Move started at 8am, done by 3pm. If I had rounded up friends it would have been an over the weekend job & likely cost more with time, gas, pizza, wear & tear and the day off we would have needed to take off to recuperate. read more

I have been moving around in San Francisco in order to try out the different areas before settling down. Since this requires a *lot* of moving, I need someone that is dependable and who charges reasonable rates. I have used Frank's Moving for every move that I have done since relocating to the bay area (three so far), and for my money there is no one better. Just like my earlier review, they have called to say they were on their way, and _every_ time have arrived when they said they would. The crews are the highest professionals, efficient, careful and friendly. Frank's website has a quote form and he is very quick to respond with the rate and to begin choosing a time that works for you. As he points out, there is no funny business, no hidden costs, just honest, straight up-front quotes. Monday 30March2015: Pete, Al and Joe were the morning moving crew....AWESOME local move in San Mateo. No hidden charges and these guys were FAST! The 5 hour move was expensive at $145 an hour and worth every penny! I moved from a huge 2 bedroom duplex with a yard and garage to a large 1 upstairs fourplex. Including plants and they put my stuff in my new buildings storage unit downstairs in the garage. This was not an easy move. Lots of stairs in the new place and lots of stairs going down to the storage. These guys never complained and were so jovial. Pete and his crew were so helpful, the next day they came back to help me remove some furniture left inside my old duplex that was supposed to be picked up by St Vincent de Paul - they truly helped me out of a jam where the property management wanted to charge me for another's day rent. Frank gave me a rough estimate on the price and amount of time based on my needs, which turned out to be entirely accurate. There were no hidden fees and the workers weren't sitting around wasting time on my dollar. His crew was friendly, professional, arrived on time, and took extra care and caution to make sure nothing was damaged. If they weren't sure about something, they didn't hesitate to ask me for clarification. Frank's rates were also among the best I looked at when evaluating other bids. Overwhelmed? Over stressed ? Tired ? - I felt all these prior to my move. Frank and his boys turned it around and made 'the move' a lot of fun. We hired Frank to move to another apartment in the same building. He was prompt in responding and stated he would send 2 people @ $45/hr each, minimum 3 hours, which is a fair price. I found a bed on CL that I needed to have picked up on the same day and called Frank back to ask if he would add it to the move. He was not planning on sending a truck and had it booked for another move, since this was just a move down the hall initially. He said not to worry about it and rented a truck to pick up the bed, no additional charge! The movers showed up on time and took great care in moving our furniture very quickly and efficiently. We were quite impressed that they finished in just under 3 hours. My only complaint is that we borrowed a dolly from work and marked the bottom of it so it would not get mixed up with the mover's dolly. The movers accidently took it with them and we called them directly and requested that they return it. We never heard back from them and had to pay to replace the dolly.
