Probably $1,000 worth of damage and not a hint of ownership on the issues at hand. The CEO is not taking ANY responsibility for the damages. No return on emails or phone calls. We will be sharing photos of all the damaged items shortly on social media. For example, a $5000 TV was wrapped in one cardboard wrapper with x4 boxes loaded on top of it. We have heavy and sensitive machinery like laser engravers, etc. A SUPER tall / big guy came to our office for an in-person estimate. He answered all my questions and replied back very promptly! Excellent communication. The quote was lower than other companies. We had other in-person estimates but it took them a week to get the quote to me. They also do NOT charge weekend overtime rates! Day of the move... the 4 movers were super quick, efficient, and strong. They clearly have a great system to get the job done. It's really disappointing when you extend trust to someone to do their job, and then they don't deliver. The crew came here with a toolbox that had almost no tools in it. Then one of the guys went off to find a hardware store, because the bed, that I told them ahead of time would be a hassle, required some tools they didn't have on them. This took 30 minutes, then he came back and said he couldn't find tools in the hardware store. Blamed that he doesn't have more tools on him on the fact that he loses them all the time. That's weird, because another moving service I previously used, and who I've moved with twice and left good Yelp reviews for, have a full set of tools with them at all times. They charge $20 more per hour, but get the job done in half the time, because they're focused and move as one unit. Then they had to stop at a hardware store to buy tools on the way to the new apartment. To top it off, they somehow got water and bleach over my most important electronics. I get the sense that they're not passionate and focused about their jobs: the disinterested phone interactions, the emails with typos, and the low energy move that took six hours for just one room, it was just a mediocre experience all throughout. If I had rented a truck and took two friends, we could have done it just as well, and we're just a bunch of amateurs. Later on, Shane, the owner, called me and apologized, said that his crew should have done better, and that's really nice of him...but he also refused to reimburse me for any damages and made more excuses. I've heard a lot of excuses: He says that I should have packed my items into boxes and not bags. Well, I moved with another moving service, twice, with the same moving bags that Shane is complaining about. They didn't break anything -- and didn't complain, either. It was based on this GOOD experience that i had with someone else, that I extended this trust to Shane's crew, who turned out did not deserve it. As I unpacked further, I saw that they wrecked some belongings that were irreplaceable and very expensive. They also left a bunch of trash here. I didn't feel like calling back to talk to someone that I got nowhere with the last time. I also searched around and saw that his moving company changed their name from "Genuine Moving" to "Flat Rate Moving", because their last Yelp profile got so many bad reviews. Shane watches this Yelp page like a hawk and flags reviews he doesn't like with Yelp. I'm not sure what he's rambling on about in his response below, claiming that I'm leaving reviews from other accounts, but I do know that there's an unusual amount of positive reviews from fake looking accounts on this profile. This was my first time using a professional moving company, and I am so glad I did it. I did an extensive research and called up many vendors. I ultimately decided to go with Flat Rate Moving Company because I liked how Jay dealt with me during the initial phone call. His rate was NOT the cheapest, but I felt Jay was the right choice. Actually other companies offered much cheaper hourly rate, but providing me with only two crews. Additional person would have cost me $50/hour. Jay suggested I should have three crews from the beginning. I felt it was one too many, but it turned out that he was right. Since other "cheaper" vendors demanded $50/hour for an additional person, actually Jay's price turned out to be the best deal. The crew (Andy, Landon and Brian) were just amazing! They were really efficient and courteous in handling my belongings. For example when the label was written in Japanese, Brian would approach me and asked what the content was so that he can place it in the appropriate area. Andy was applying more tapes on the boxes I thought were already secured. See, I loved these extra efforts they were making!! Also, I did NOT have any broken items as I had originally anticipated. I mean, I can just go on and on... The total moving cost came way under my budgeted amount. I'm SO glad I went with Flat Moving Company. A reminder for those of you who have not experienced it lately: Moving is a bitch. Like many experiences in life, packing starts out all full of good intentions and high expectations. Initially, packing is an exercise in organization, everything in its proper box, labeled and wrapped just so. As the deadline for moving day approaches, you move belongings into portable containers less and less methodically until you find yourself grabbing large lawn-and-leaf garbage bags and recklessly throwing things in with thinly veiled panic. Why-oh-why do I have so many possessions? Invariably, moving day arrives. It found me in mental disarray and a cold sweat and only partially packed. I had stopped packing in the early evening of the prior night when I realized that, due to my muddled and exhausted state, I was doing more harm than good. The plan was to resume packing in the wee hours of the morning; of course, that did not work out so well. When Flat Rate Moving Company, namely Pierre, Edward and Ron, arrived a little ahead of schedule, I nervously asked if they ever entered clients' homes only to find them not at all packed. This was my second move with the company... which should say something. There are a lot of good, well-known movers out there, and there are a lot of shady moving outfits too. If you're moving on a budget, like we were, it can feel risky to go with the non-name-brand route if you worry that some careless guys are going to show up and tromp through your house. Alas, the guys at FlatRate will make you feel good about your choice to stick with a locally-owned company that may not be all that well known. Your wallet will also appreciate the choice! On my most recent move they arrived at the stroke of 9am as promised and moved a full 3 bedroom house in 5 hours flat, start to finish. The crew was super friendly, had a great sense of humor, and worked their arses off. They were also really careful with the collection of boxes I'd set aside as "super delicate" (e.g. computer gear) . They had all the requisite dollies, moving quilts, etc. Not to mention the crucial ninja/matrix moves required to magically make couches, tables, and kitchen islands fit through narrow doorways and around seemingly impassible corners. Whoa! We'd packed everything in advance, but we were offered the chance to have them do that for us. Maybe next time. I noticed their website was out of commission, and since I'm a web designer I asked if they needed a hand with their online marketing. One of the owners told me they really didn't want to grow their business because their schedule was already full with repeat/referral clients and they had a solid, trustworthy crew they had depended on for years. Hands down the best movers I've ever worked with, from start to finish. For context, this was my 4th move in the past 3 years (but should be the last one for a while). Shane, the owner, was very professional, and provided me with an in person estimate and a lightning fast itemized quote. I appreciated his ability to shift his schedule around to accommodate the day I needed to move, which I requested pretty last minute. He arrived with his crew right on time, and they got everything out of our old place and into our new place faster than he even estimated. He even accommodated a detour stop en route to the new home, because at the last minute we had to sell our old couch and pickup a new one. And, we had a pretty gnarly set of stairs up to our new place and his team moved everything with a smile--through the lunch hour in record time! We use Flat rate for long distance move and unfortunately had pretty bad experience in end. We paid the extra cost for the movers insurance and had 3 pieces of furniture broken in move. We have been trying to reach their claims department for months since move and have had no luck at all getting this resolved. I contacted Jay when I realized that there was NO WAY my fiance and I were going to be able to pull our move from Berkeley to Brooklyn without the help of some Major Pros. Use them if you want your things broken! I went with this company because they had good reviews. Shane came to my house looked at my stuff told me they could have the truck loaded in 1 and 1/2 hours. I only needed them to help with the heavy things I couldn't help my Husband so we only used the minimum. After he realized I was only doing the minimum things went downhill quickly. They put a fist punch in the back of my book shelf. My washing machine is all scratched up and they broke the drum so it is off balance. My dryer they broke the coil to the heating element. Boxes of things like sentimental glasses were shattered. They would pick up my tubs to move them put them upside down on their heads and then when they put them in the house they wouldn't bend to place them on the floor they would just drop them from a standing position! I thought they were nice guys personally but as far as moving your stuff I would think again! To comment on the company's response. Talk about lies. First we purchased a million dollar home so the expense wasn't an issue. We had a closing date so I never said we were going to move anything ahead of time because we couldn't even access the house until the move date. There was no insurance or cash out or trying to get money. If that was the case I would have asked you to pay for the washer repair person that came out and fixed my washer that you said you would pay for. You also said you would repair my bookshelf but I dropped it because I didn't want to deal with the hassle. So it wasn't all about the money like you are implying. Shane and his crew just completed an in-city move. They were quick and professional. The entire move was done within 2.5 hours. I would highly recommend them. Details follow below: I filled out the questionnaire on the website, and received a call from Shane the next morning. We booked a move three weeks out. The quoted rate was $450. I provided some information like what floor I was moving from and to, and where to park the moving truck. I opted for the move without a packing service. The day before the move I called to confirm the appointment with Shane. He gave me an hour long window for the arrival of the truck -- 9-10 AM. The next morning the truck arrived promptly at 9 AM. The crew was extremely professional and careful with my things. They filled up the truck, drove it to the new place, and unloaded the truck. Shane and his guys rocked it this past weekend. My girlfriend and I moved from Oakland to Walnut Creek, and I decided to give my back a rest and hire some pros to do the heavy lifting. We scheduled our move pretty late in the game and were worried that we wouldn't be able to find someone on such short notice, but Shane was able to squeeze us in and give us a good rate. He did a great job of assessing the situation and was open and honest about the few concerns he had about our plans in regards to certain pieces of furniture. On the day of the move, he and his crew showed up exactly when he said they would and moved all of our stuff out pretty quickly, and they were even faster unloading at the new place. I am skeptical to give this place a 5 star for one reason only: They misquoted me. I had them move our one bedroom from Alameda to Point Richmond in December 2010 and was quoted for 1/4 the actual amount I ended up paying. The good: Nothing was broken. They mover's completely covered everything with proper protective blankets and clear wrap and took caution lifting and loading all our furniture and packed boxes. They didnt carelessly bang into things, or slam boxes into their truck. They were very careful about making sure your valuables are taken care of. They move at a pretty rapid pace and try to get in and out as soon as possible. I guess I was a little peeved about having to pay 3x more than I was expecting but Jay spoke with me and explained when they are quoting someone via phone that its just that. A quote. They cant be sure because there are always various factors that might be unaccounted for. ( Fine leather furniture in our case, stairs, elevators, traffic). In all, if I have the money set aside, I would use these guys again because they really did do a terrific job. On the other hand, it took a while to get in touch with someone at their listed number, I never got an invoice from them until 3 weeks after the move and really hated having to pay that much because I felt blindsided. I like to know how much I will be investing in something before committing to pay so that I know how to manage our finances. Bottom line, if you have money and want a safe and totally efficient moving experience, hire these guys. Do have extra patience to deal with technicalities, you should be fine. read more

We ended up doing a full service move, which means they packed up all of our belongings on one day and then loaded, moved and unloaded our belongings a couple of days later. The entire process was smooth and phenomenally efficient. We had a team of three guys headed by Ron. These guys are strong, smart, and don't stop working. They don't take time outs, and they don't charge you when they take a lunch break. They're friendly and pet positive. There's a reason why they have 5 star reviews. Here are our reasons: Packing Us Up We had about 120 boxes, including 40 boxes of books and at least a dozen works of art, some of them quite large. We had 11 sets of long, heavy curtains and curtain rods that needed to come down. We had a washing machine and refrigerator. A full kitchen of breakables. These guys packed up every single item in our house, made custom boxes for our larger works of art, and wrapped everything in a total of 50 pounds of wrapping paper--and did it all in 6.25 hours. Yes: 6 hours, 15 minutes. This included their travel time (it's an industry standard to charge for travel). I never looked into hiring professional packers before because I thought it would cost an outrageous amount of money. Trust me: give Flat Rate a call and ask them to estimate it for you. The owner of Flat Rate, I think his name is Shane, was spot on with his estimate. Was it super cheap? No. But it was totally reasonable--and remember, we had about 120 boxes. They'll come the day before a move to pack you up, which means you're not living in boxes and camping in your own home for weeks. I'll never pack myself again! Oh, and when they packed up our curtains, they even folded them carefully. Can you say "details"? Moving Us Ron, the head of the team that packed and moved us, is like a space engineer. I kept checking out the truck as they loaded it, and it's clear that he's an expert on things like center of gravity, potential weight shifts, and box organization. Loading the truck is a science, and it took twice as long as unloading it. I couldn't believe the pace they were putting things in our new home--and setting up our beds, our dining room table, and other such "constructables." Ron even expertly removed a couple of doors to get a few larger items in, and then replaced them. When they were setting up our odd-sized bedroom, he even helped us figure out where to put things. A Few Tips These guys are awesome. Tip them well--they totally deserve it. We also bought them lunch, and they said that wasn't really a normal practice. I'd like to urge anyone reading this far down in the review to buy these guys lunch. They were really appreciative, all three of them. Final Comment: Hire them. Shane and co. moved me from North Oakland to Laurel a couple weeks ago, and I gotta say -- it was a great experience start to finish. They showed up when they said they would (10 minutes early in fact), were friendly, courteous and communicative. They handled our belongings with care and were at the same time incredibly efficient . We were on the 4th floor of a walkup and their system moved our furniture quickly: one man would take something out of the apartment to the stairs where another man would take it down to another man waiting at the base of the stairs, taking it to the truck. At the truck, the remaining crew member would load, organize and stack it. Btw, they called the day before, confirming the job, asking what, if anything, needed disassembled. It was because of this rule that I decided to hire a professional that knew what they were doing. I came across this company and I could not believe the level of service and professionalism that the moving crew displayed. Transitioning is never easy, and facing change is difficult in itself alone. These guys are good movers and really take care to wrap your furniture so that it doesn't take any damage. Free wardrobe boxes were a big plus as well. But I can't give them 5 stars because one of the movers plugged my toilet with toilet paper and feces. I had to deal with the stench as I unplugged it with a plunger. Not fun. UPDATE The company got in touch with me because they saw my one-star review. (I expected this would happen since moving companies depend heavily on review sites to get business). They apologized for the unprofessional handling of the breakage and offered to have the legs of the sideboard fixed. A few days later, one of their guys stopped by and picked up the legs to take to a furniture repair shop (Furniture Medic). After about a week, they were done and the guys came by to put them back on the sideboard. They look great and you can't tell that they've been fixed. I appreciate Flat Rate following up and following through to make sure everything was ok in the end. They said that they have talked with the leader of the crew and are going to work on better policies and procedures for crew managing issues on the day of the move. Great! Upon reflection, I think that I really should have not been in such a rush to find someone to move so quickly before the holidays. This company was down to a skeleton crew and probably not the top people were working due to the move date. I believe that the guys who run the company are good guys and during a normal time of year (not holidays!), I believe they would do a good job. read more

I just moved from Berkeley to Oakland and for the first time in my life I used a professional moving company. I am glad to announce two things: 1. I hope not to move for a while. 2. If and when I'll move again, I'll make sure I'll hire once again the Flat Rate Moving Company! Three guys showed up on time with a 26 foot truck. Most of the stuff was moved by hand, with little help of the elevator. These guys were great, they worked non-stop for 5 hours. They handled every single fragile piece with care. Friendly and quick service. I left a tip as appreciation for their hard work. Good job! read more

Had a WONDERFUL experience with Flat Rate Moving company! We moved an 1800 sq ft home from Fairfield, CA to Oakley, CA and it took one day, and we were sleeping in our own beds the same night! The cost was reasonable, and the movers were very courteous and professional, and handled our items the way we would handle them. Would definitely recommend this company to my friends and family, and should we need their services again, I wouldn't hesitate to call again. The owner Shane, was there throughout the entire move, and I found it very refreshing that he actually got out there and got his hands dirty along with his other guys. Great Company! A++! read more

Great and stress-free experience from beginning to end. The movers were timely - about 5 minutes before the scheduled time (I have had movers in the past arrive more than an hour early). Reese, Pierre, and Carlos were awesome and moved my things very carefully (but quickly). They did not slow down the moving process in any way to bill me for extra time or hours. The phone number directs me to a different moving company.... and Googling Flat Rate Moving Company Oakland results in some large moving company that doesn't sound like its the same as the one mentioned in these reviews. We found Flat Rate on the recommendation of our in-laws who said they had a great experience, and we were not led astray. Shane did a great job evaluating our needs and reviewing our inventory to make sure in advance that we got the service we needed. On the day of, the movers who came out -- Reese, Carlos and Miguel (thanks, guys!) -- were all super pros, who arrived early, went straight to work and packed up our belongings with care and attention. It was a whirlwind of activity, but everything was handled just right and arrived in one piece at our now home. Couldn't have asked for better service. I can highly recommend this company! read more

Flat rate is the way to go!! These guys are the best! I hired them to move me and my family and they did an excellent job. They were very professional, courteous, and punctual. They took extra good care of all my antique furniture and treated it like it was their own. I was concerned about moving my large art collection, but these guys put my mind at ease with the way they meticulously packed and handled all my art. They really went above and beyond! Got safes? Not to worry, they move safes too. They were able to move my heavy gun safe with ease. All my things arrived to the new house on time and without a scratch on anything. These guys were fabulous! I hate moving worse than just about anything, but Jay made it as painless as possible. Our moving situation was unique and frankly ridiculous, and they handled it with grace, aplomb and surprising stamina. We consolidated houses with my mom last year, which meant that we first needed to move into a temporary rental so we could prep both our houses for sale; Jay and his team moved our stuff out of our 4-bedroom house AND my mom's stuff out of her 2-bedroom house all in one day, on THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR. And our house had LOTS of stairs. And they helped with a little last-minute packing as well. They ended up charging us several hundred less than I expected, and my husband was extremely pleased with their careful treatment of his precious plasma TV. Five months later, when we were ready to move into our permanent home, it goes without saying that we hired them again . Yet again a job well done. If I had any complaints, it would have to do with a few shelf pegs I still can't find. But that's a casualty I will gladly accept for such a great job. I can get more shelf pegs. As I said, I hate moving. I never ever ever ever want to move again. I would rather have extensive dental work without any anesthetic. I would rather watch nothing but C-SPAN 2 for a month. I would rather get a full body massage from Newt Gingrich. But if I do have to move again, I will not hesitate to call Flat Rate Moving Company. read more

This is identical to a post I posted under the San Francisco site but I did not realized they had closed, so anyways, here it goes. Note that this is a national company so it doesn't really matter what office you go through - they'll patch it to the right people. ----------------------------- Flat Rate is awesome. I've used them twice now. One move from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and recently from San Francisco to Santa Rosa. They are very responsive to your needs and provide most if not all services one would need for packing. They don't upcharge and if anything charge you less than what they could. The prices are pretty much fixed as quoted and both times I've moved, the workers were very quick, efficient, and polite. Our next move will definitely still use them. read more
