The first time I went to this Fred Meyer a couple of years ago, I wanted to try the pastrami at the deli, and the attendant gave us three gigantic pieces. I also had wanted to try the turkey...same thing. So since my co-shoppers didn't want much of the meat, I ended up having 5 pieces or so on my own and was almost full already. Sweet! (we did buy pastrami, yes.) But really, a good secret about this Fred Meyer is one of it's employees - Noah! Find him putting shopping carts away wit a yellow vest on at various times during the week/weekend, and ask him to sing you a song! He's a great guy, and sure to put a smile on your face! read more

I had been a Safeway man for about 20 years (from the days of tagging along with my momma) until the Hawthorne Fred Meyer remodel. It was not a gradual switch over to Fred Meyer. I visited the remodeled store once and it was pretty much over. The deciding factors were: 1. A wider selection of produce at lower everyday prices. 2. An awesome gourmet cheese selection with descriptions(!) of every one. 3. A huge wine section with great sales all over the place, as well as features items with descriptions(!) becuase I'm no wine expert. 4. Great low prices on many of our staples like soup, bread that doesn't have high-fructose corn syrup, canned tomatoes, canned beans, crackers, frozen entrees for lunches, and toothepaste... to name a few. There's a reason that Safeway's new marketing strategy is everyday low prices... which sounds very familiar to this Fred Meyer shopper. There are a few drawbacks for this store. Like the parking is nightmare unless you're there at an obscure hour. The meat selection is not very good. If you go to the Gateway or Johnson Creek stores, you'll see about 3 times the selection. Also, most Fred Meyer stores don't offer bagels like Safeway does. This store has some if you get there in the morning, but they aren't as good as Safeway's. Overall, we're happy with the switch. The store feels like a high-class shopping experience and still has low prices and great selection. read more

*Reading the reviews below, I should probably note that this review is for CURRENT Freddy's, not previous under-construction Freddys, which would have gotten 2 stars in my book* Going to this Fred Meyer is like going to another planet. The customers are odd, the selection is odder, and the staff is oddest. This is the grocery store that's nearest to me, and I frequent it very, uhm, frequently. I go here for all of my dining needs, and always find what I want. I trust their fresh food department, and because it's located on Hawthorne (read: hippie-town), they even offer a relatively impressive array of organic/healthy foods. The reason why they aren't getting 5 stars is because of their strangely arranged aisles, which changes the location of the foods all over the store, without any real rhyme or reason (for instance, the makeup used to be near the wine, but now I think it's near the meats?). I understand the store is smaller than most FMs, but still... Also, the parking. The parking sucks. A lot. I can only ride my bike or walk when coming here. But, If you go here sometime in the evening, you'll probably find me prowling around the gourmet cheese & olive bar. Stay away from my Camembert cheese or Greek mix olives! They're mine! What I love about the newly remodeled Freddies on Hawthorne: * Chalkboard in the produce department telling us what is fresh and local this week. Always check the chalkboard first! * Open air feeling of the outer produce department - I'm a huge fan of glass garage doors that open when the weather is nice. * Large, approachable meat counter. If you are there when Manuel is working, he is hands-down the best person to help at the meat counter, and that has been true from the beginning, before any remodel. Manuel is fantastic, and I trust his suggestions without hesitation. * Friendly, helpful deli staff that SLICES meat rather than grabbing handfuls of pre-sliced, slightly off-color meat of the pre-renovation variety. They even offer to let you taste what you select before they slice it all. I'm used to this service from the East Coast, and I'm glad to see it here as well. * Okay this one is admittedly kitchy - but I love that the frozen food section remains dark until it senses that you are walking by, and the lights suddenly pop on as you walk down the aisle. It's like all the little ice cream containers are waking up saying "Pick me! Pick me!" Yeah, sometimes i shop hungry. * The new wine department actually rivals the wine department of the Broadway/Weidler Freddies. It's large, has a great variety, and hits all the different price points as well as different world regions. * The beer cases. Holy micro-brew Batman! They have really stepped this section up considerably. I like to mix and match large bottles so The Bud and I can try new brews. Yeah, sometimes I shop thirsty. * The numerous bike racks. This one was a sticking point with the neighbors and the neighborhood association. I'm glad Freddies beefed up the number of bike racks. They're always full! * Stepped up security. I haven't been panhandled in the parking lot in quite some time. I used to brace myself before stepping onto the property. Not lately! Going to Freddies is now a completely enjoyable experience. I love how this whole store suggest that SE residents are all hippies health nuts and that we need all our grocery stores to be Whole Foodish. But whatever, I love it! They the BIGGEST beer and wine selection of any Freddys I've seen. Its awesome. Good job with that. What I don't love is how every time I go there everyone seems to be constantly stressed out and everyone is almost running into each other because of how narrow the aisles are. I suggest avoiding this store on food holidays. Oh, and hungry from all that shopping? Well, sit down to their SUSHI BAR located by the deli. (Good sushi, too). I specifically wanted to review the burger bar, "Hawthorne Hamburger Project". I'm having an event today, and needed to run to Freddy's to buy some last minute supplies, and grabbed veggie burgers for my girlfriend Heather and myself, and a standard cow burger for my friend Trina. Heather and Trina each took a bite out of their burgers and asked "WHERE DID YOU GET THIS?" and stated "THIS IS THE BEST BURGER I'VE EVER HAD" and such. If you're in the Hawthorne neighborhood and need a quick lunch, run into this Fred Meyer location. They have the largest, most diverse food court. From quick snacks to full meals. The best part? The deli case has clearly labeled vegetarian/vegan options!! Want a tofu slider? How about some curried rice? Great customer service, too. And if you want some fresh fruit to go with your lunch, they have a nice selection of organic produce! P.S. - Yes, some of the patrons are, um... unsavory, shall we say. I have been shopping at this store for the better part of my adult like. I've been there through multiple remodels and everyone there is almost always amazing!! Until this week. I went in recently to get my groceries for the week. Equipped with a mask I went into produce in search of zucchini. As I approached, there was a woman, Faye (shaved hair aside from a pony tail in the middle). She was blocking the area of the zucchini with two large rolling carts and construction type cones. It was strange. Is this area blocked off or something? Between the carts, the cones and her body, there was no way to access the zucchini. With mask on and at a distance (you have no choice but to keep a distance with the barricade of carts and cones), I asked her if she could make space to allow me to get what I needed. Her response? "Come back later. I'm almost done here." I responded that I was about done with my shopping and didn't have time for her to move on to the next thing.... she snapped back with something like "I won't be long. You can come back. Also, please step away when speaking to me." Excuse me!?!?! I put away the few groceries in my cart and just left and went to New Seasons down the street for what I needed. I'm not particular about customer service. I don't expect people in the service industry to treat me like royalty. Not at all. I don't even expect a smile, but, I do expect them to not be in the way of what I need and at a minimum to be cordial to customers. It's funny, because as soon as I got home and got out of my car, I told a neighbor about my experience. Apparently the neighbor has had similar experiences with this employee and is just simply not shopping there anymore. So that's two customers lost. I understand the cautions that needed to be taken because of covid. Absolutely. Hence, my mask and distance from her.... it seems like this person is just looking for a reason to be mean to customers under the umbrella of safety. I'm surprised she's still working there. With Portland you have to shop at like five different stores to get the best deals and products. But I like the re-furbed Fredies. More expensive than Winco but good for beer and chips and fruit and Dave's Killer Bread. That bread IS killer. Parking Lot is a mess. You best bet is to take a bike. read more

I am giving the Hawthorne Fred Meyer's the best rating ever because it has more varieties of Cheetos than any other store that I have been to and that is all I care about. Also it's a good store. But seriously, it has the normal kind (crunchy and puffs), flaming hot and flaming hot LIMON, some weird "mixers" kind that i don't even really care about, tapatio, and salsa con queso. Plus all the other things that a Fred Meyers would normally have except clothes because this store isn't that big but that doesn't matter anyway because it's on Hawthorne. The Deadhead Fred. The proletarian supermarket in my neighborhood (Zupan's being the bourgeois one). When I first moved to Belmont, it took me three months to figure out where to find things in the Fred. I would just...wander...agape and confused. I can't explain why the layout seemed weird to me, but it took forever to get used to it. The Fred's selection of items is great. They have 95% of what I need, and the prices are usually reasonable. They carry a quite adequate selection of cheap wine (my Yelp fuel). I appreciate their sizable organics collection, especially now that Daily Grind is gone. I go to Zupan's for produce. A factoid that says something about Portland: Velveeta is hard to find at the Fred. Any supermarket in Ohio that would make a customer search 10 minutes for the Velveeta would be out of business in a year. A supermarket in Portland...not so much. read more

This is the BEST American supermarket I've ever stepped foot in! I've been to one other Fred Meyers over in Hillsboro, but the one here on Hawthorne & 39th is modern and sleek. Too bad I discovered it on my last day in Portland, literally. Car was all packed and I was on my way back down to California, just stopping by for a quick bite. The entire time, I kept regretting that I hadn't discovered this FM sooner, as I would've surely come every week! I was impressed by the selection of ready-to-eat foods, and I ended up going for some blue crab sushi. It was delicious! There was a sushi bar that you could sit at and eat sushi as it comes by on a conveyer belt! Fred Meyer's is now a sushi restaurant? You'd better believe it! Other than that, they carry everything your typically FM does, but I just love this building and design the most. Helps that there are self checkouts too! read more

Portland loves two things: cycling and wine. Fred Meyer on hipster-central Hawthorne? Oh, they know how to cater to their town. While there is ample parking (but watch out for those crazy drivers...they're liable to run you over), there are rows upon rows of bicycle racks right up front. And they're always full! And most Freddy's have a pretty good selection of wine, but how many of them actually have a wine steward on call if you have questions or need recommendations? Yeah...this one does. And he was way cool! There's even an enormous case devoted to his picks. Sweet! And I found out that I apparently like wines with fruity undertones (I was looking for a Marechal Foch, but they were all out and settled for Syrah). Other than these two impressive feats, this Fred Meyer is more of a solid three stars. The layout kind of freaks me out; everything seems to be in the wrong place, logically. Or it could just be me. And the fact that there are two levels totally took me off guard, and makes it hard to bring your groceries along for clothing shopping upstairs. And this place is always super busy. The last few times I went, I swear there was the same anorexic girl just sort of loitering near the baskets, looking waifish, saying through telekinesis to everyone to stay away from the carbs. This location is so much swankier than the one nearest my house, with such a larger selection of alternative-lifestyle goods (organic, vegan, herbal, hippie hipster type stuff), and with warmer, more stylish design. I'm so jealous. Of course I understand that there's no reason to invest in remodeling the Freddy's close to me because I live in a more rundown neighborhood, but it's shocking how they're such completely different worlds. First, this is a review only for the meat counter at this particular Fred Meyer. As for the pharmacy in this store, caveat emptor. The pharmacy here is definitely ONE STAR. I've had them give me the wrong prescription/formulation and then balk when I tried to return it unopened. Anyways, back to the meat of the matter...or should I say sausage. Inside this particular Freddy's, there is a meat counter, and in said meat counter, there are freshly prepared, made-in-house sausages that truly merit culinary investigation. My particular fave is the Thai curry. I have been known to circle over this store day after day looking to see if the sausage (wo)man has created another batch of these delectable tube meat packages in my fave flavor and meat choice. They really are a cut above, and to my knowledge, they are minimally processed and not made with nasty hormones and preservatives. Besides the Thai curry yum yum sausages, there are also another six or seven flavors and meat types at any given time. They are all good, but again, my heart belongs to Thai curry sausages. They are also a meal in themselves, and they are about 1/4 pound each. One will do ya. I buy them four at a time. A wrapped package of four of those babies generally costs about $6.50. They are $5.99 a pound. We have also cooked them into a delightful sausage pot pie, used them in breakfast burritos, and had them for lunch with lentils and spinach. They are always scrumptious, and I like that someone who works there actually makes them in house and they're not being trucked in from Kansas. There's only the butcher paper packaging, so they aren't in some crazy styro package. Try them, you'll like them. PS...parking, as some others have already noted, sucks at this Freddy's. read more

I think the set up is funky, and the hipster parents letting their kids stick their nose picking fingers into the fruit and salad bar stuff is nasty. The workers are afraid of not totally fitting in so they don't tell the brats (referring to the parents) anything. BUT if you don't mind hipsters, pushovers, hippies and yuppies then the selection of organic produce and other healthy options makes it totally worth it. There's bike parking, roof parking, sushi bar that's great, the bakery does a good job fair kids cakes and its across from concert venues. So you can buy rum for your flask before going into Hawthorne theater. Bottom line: come here for just about anything but clothes. And remember to behave like you're on xanax or they'll sniff you out for not being one of them. read more

This is one of my favorite FM, mainly because they nearly always have NICE cheese cut up for samples! Upon arrival my first stop is at the cheese, then to the candy ( which often has moonstruck chocolate samples), then to produce for fruit samples, and then back to cheese! I like this fm but the parking really blows! Reminds me of trader joes. It's always clean here, produce is reasonably priced, and they frequently have sales on the cooking gadgets which is great. read more

since the remodel, i've really tried to overlook how over-emphasized the organic produce has become, to the degree that some conventional products simply aren't available. science literacy is on the decline in america if you think consumers are too ignorant to know that 'organic' produce actually uses unregulated, inefficient pesticides. why not go all the way and claim gmo foods are poisonous? it's a disingenuous hippie-courting marketing plan, and it's a big turn-off for me as an informed shopper who lives near the store. but the one-star rating i'm leaving today is to show my abject disappointment at the removal of your hot deli section, replacing it with a kroger brand popeye's knock-off which won't even sell most available items a-la-carte. it was **very** convenient for me (and countless others, without a doubt) to swing through and grab a few popcorn chicken or a slice of decent pizza on the way to work, or even a rack of ribs for dinner after punching out for the day. but no, you will now only sell me a value meal combo nobody asked you for. i mean what, somebody really thought this was a good idea? one has to wonder why the change was made. do you intentionally wish to push away those customers who only had a few bucks to spare for quick replenishment? your overpriced and un-meaty pre-made sandwiches are no substitute. i can't imagine there was so much end-of-day waste (cold dry corn dogs, overlooked slices of pizza) that it was a hugely money-losing venture. this fred meyer makes good money, that's clear. so why undervalue the community of regular deli customers you've fostered just to open another branch of kroger's quasi-restaurant chain? the deli, as it is now, is fucking stupid. i can get a superior boar's head sandwich up the street at east side deli, i can get a better salad bar experience half that distance away at new seasons (organic/gmo fearmongering notwithstanding), and when i want a chicken strip or two without a mandatory goddam biscuit and drink and whatever-the-fuck else, i'll go to goddam safeway. This Freddy's is awesome! First things first, you are not going to get Winco prices and you should know that up front. You get the convenience of one-stop shopping and you pay for it. I'm a cheese lover and you can't get any better than the cheese counter here. Seriously. They let you try the cheese and the selection is huge! They also have one of the biggest selections of bulk foods. Everything you could imagine (at least I couldn't imagine any more). PLUS, you can make your own natural peanut butter right there with their awesome machine! Fred Meyer has always had some of the freshest produce and freshest seafood around. This Freddy's is no exception. The selection of organic and non-organic produce is amazing. Frankly, given the amount of bad produce out there, I don't know how they do it! The parking lot can be messy, especially around holidays and after the evening commute. There is always parking in the upper lot though, so head there if you don't find a spot. If you'd rather circle the lower parking lot 8 times to get really close, have fun with that. And if you do that, maybe you shouldn't be shopping in the earth-conscious Portland area, much less one of Portland's most environmentally friendly neighborhoods. And finally, certainly not least, comes the beer and wine. GREAT selection! You might find more wine at Cost Plus World Market...MAYBE...but I doubt the beer selection could be topped by any store around. If there is such a place, let me know!!! read more

I come here pretty much every day, as they really cover all of my daily needs. I get my eye drops from their pharmacy, "Tasty Bite" meals and "Silk" from their grocery area, and rubber gloves from their medical section. I wish they still had some simple clothing items as they once had, but I'm glad that they instead enlarged their better(aware) food section. Organic produce to motor oil, Freddy's is on my list today. I live closer to a Safeway, but I'm always let-down there. read more

I went Shopping at the Hawthorne Fred Meyer store tonight to get Supplies for Our Holiday. We're Celebrating Hannukah this Year! And... I found some Really Great Deals on Fruit, already in the Cup, Store Brand Splenda ( sweetener ), and Advil and Excedrin for Migraines. There was even a Sale ( Buy One Get One Free ) on my Husband's Supplements. :) Yesss! The Associate at Customer Service couldn't find the Musical Dreidel that was being Held in my Name... but there was another One located on the Sales Floor. I even Picked out a Great ( I hope ) Champagne for Our Next Special Event, with the Help of the Wine Steward who was On Duty Tonight. Hello Hawthorne Fred Meyer! I'm a fan of this FM. Really I think it's one of the best in town. It offers a good selection of organic produce and I can almost always find an organic version of whatever I'm looking for here. They also have a good natural food section. Always well-stocked and with sales promptly displayed. Annie's Mac and Cheese made with organic pasta for only $1...yes please! Then there's a Moonstruck chocolate case in between the floral department and the bakery. Perfect for when I need my chocolate fix or small gifts. Moonstruck is the best. Behind Moonstruck is a sushi bar. I've never indulged, but it looked delicious. I've often been shopping for wine when they have samples in the back. Last time I tried Strongbow Hard Cider, which was actually delicious when served over ice. Purchased some! They also have a bar in the back with beer on tap. Upstairs you'll find homegoods, which are often on sale. Electronics is up there too. Also, a Peet's coffee. Drinks at this Peet's are hit and miss, but overall I prefer Peet's to Starbucks almost any day. Kitchen stuff is downstairs behind the natural food section. I needed to swop out my old, aluminum (potentially neurotoxic) tea kettle for a new stainless steel one. I found one at this FM on sale for $11. Would have been much more at some fancy-smancy kitchen store. Self-checkout people aren't very attentive. The self-checkout will freak out for no reason stating: "An attendant has been notified to assist you!", when really that attendant is just talking to her friend and not completing any assisting. There are additional checkout locations upstairs and at the back of the store. The location is convenient, but the parking lot kind of sucks. Take that as you will. Overall this FM pretty much rocks! read more

This store is amazing since the eco-remodel and visually stunning. Whomever is doing the displays in the outer produce section is quite talented. OK, OK. What I really love is their natural foods section. They carry so many of the things I used to have to go to New Seasons and drop a pretty penny on at a more reasonable price (most of the time). They also have a decent bulk section and what looks like a decent sushi-go-round (although I've never tried it). My personal favorites are their You Scan check out lanes and the rewards card. There is something extra special about being able to quickly scan and pay for your schtuff and getting quarterly "checks" toward your next shopping trip. I truly do enjoy Fred Meyer. I mean what more can you ask for? They have reasonable prices, a great selection and convenient location, the triple threat. Their produce is great, boasting a large selection of organic goods. Their natural food section is large with a great bulk section, not as good as a co-op maybe, but amazing for a large grocery store. There is rarely times where I can't find what I am looking for. I will say their seafood quality leaves a little to be desired. But overall this is a great place to shop. read more

Went here for a few snacks and some cold meds on a recent trip. Nothing fancy, just a pretty standard grocery store. The shelves were stocked with some basic, national brand things, and some store brand things. Didn't spend time in the non-grocery areas, though. But, the floors were clean, the parking was plentiful (in a city where I felt like I was constantly looking for a space), and produce was pretty good. I used the self check out lane, so I didn't have a lot of interaction with the staff, but that process was easy and efficient. read more

Until a recent negative shopping experience at another Fred Meyer, I didn't realize how great this one actually is. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, an easy to navigate layout, great selection and cleanliness are just a few of the reasons why we love shopping at this location. Lines are never backed up, which is key when you want to grab a few things after work and get home without a fuss. The only slight complaint (although I hesitate to use that term) is the less than ideal crowd the bottle return in the parking lot attracts. I've been cursed out while I was minding my own business a time or two, but that's more the city's issue than the store's. All in all, the best Fred Meyer around in my opinion. read more
