As a kid, I often heard people say "Don't play with toads as you'll get warts." Fact: I never played with toads as a kid and never contracted warts. Another fact: Touching toads will not yield warts. Didn't know that until waaaaaay later in life. Several months ago I saw some development on my left middle finger where I thought it was callus but that area bled profusely when I tried removing it. In doing a search on Google, I realized it's a wart. I decided to ask my sister (an RN) and favorite niece by default (now doing her residency) and they both confirmed the wart development. I've heard about the over the counter wart removal kits so I went to Longs to pick one up but after applying it multiple times the wart seemed to grow larger. Yikes... It was now time to reach out to my PCP when I sent him a message via MyChart and attached a photo of my wart. Later in the day I got a reply back advising me I'm being referred to Dr Frederick Harada, a dermatologist. His office contacted me to schedule an appointment. Prior to seeing Dr. Harada, niece informed me a common procedure is cryotherapy, freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. Located in POB I, Dr. Harada's office is located on the 9th floor. Parking was easy as the park structure is adjacent to POB I. Upon arrival, I first provided my insurance card and DL and then had to complete several forms. I didn't sit that long until my name was called and escorted to an examination room. Prior to this appointment I'll be frank I was somewhat concerned after checking out the Yelp reviews as this business page averages 3.7 stars with a handful of low rated reviews with similar claims. But I had to trust my PCP as he referred me to Dr. Harada. Prior to Dr. Harada's arrival, I was asked if it was okay for the intern to observe where I agreed. Dr. Harada and his intern walked in and I was caught off guard with Dr. Harada's boisterous personality. Super upbeat and was also impressed he studied my profile prior to seeing me. Dr. Harada saw my wart and after confirming, he informed me what the procedure would be. After the briefing, Dr. Harada called his assistant to bring in the equipment and supplies, and started to get to work. My wart was frozen with liquid nitrogen and the next thing I know, my finger was wrapped with a band aid. I was then provided with a flier on warts and what to expect after treating my finger. I was informed how to care for my finger and warned of possible pain, which eventually kicked in so I was at ease knowing this discomfort is normal. Prior parting with Dr. Harada, he mentioned a follow up appointment one month later and to head back to the receptionist to schedule that appointment. Since having the cryotherapy, I've witnessed the wart slowly changing formation where the hard skin is no longer there and the surface evened out. Luckily I'm not experiencing any discomfort, such as pain nor itchiness. I've been paying attention of keeping that area clean and applying Vaseline to keep the area moist. I came here from West side due to reviews and was willing to drive to town to make sure I got the best experience. I have a family history of skin cancer and wanted to be proactive and get checked. It felt very rushed with MD Harada. My appointment didn't even last 5 minutes. I couldn't go over all my reasons for the visit bc it was so rushed and couldn't finish my sentence. I had some keloid scarring from a previous surgery and was referred by a friend whom is also a patient of Dr. Harada. I had to get steroid injections into the scarring weekly. I'm so glad I came to Dr. Harada bc the scarring is completely flat and continues to heal beautifully. He made the process quick, easy and as painless as possible. The lack of professionalism at this office is mindblowing. I first went to Frederick A. Harada, MD, LLC in November 2017 because I had a small itch on the top of my foot, which I suspected to be a mild case of eczema. I was correct in my self-diagnosis because the problem went away shortly after applying cream that was prescribed to me after my first visit. I expressed interest in a skin test to pinpoint anything that irritates my skin. Dr. Harada seemed eager to conduct the skin test and told me to set up an appointment to come in the following week. I had never taken a skin test before. At no time during my first or second visit to the office was the price of the skin test told to me. Neither was there any explanation or suggestion to check with my insurance provider HMSA to see how much of the test would be covered. Given that my skin patch test would not be the first for this office, they knew the estimated costs, but simply did not divulge this information to me at any time. Today I opened the bill (which was sent to my old address and took some time to be forwarded to my new one), and I was shocked to discover that the original charge of the skin test was $892.80, and after insurance adjustments, I am responsible for paying $425.01. The skin test was not a medical necessity nor was my skin irritation at the time severe. Lastly, the skin test revealed that I only have a slight reaction to fragrance. The test was wholly unnecessary. When I called Dr. Harada's office today, I was quite upset, and the receptionist did not make the situation better. She was rude and would not let me speak even when I continually said, "excuse me" to her. She tried to make it seem as if it had been my fault for not knowing my insurance adjustments and how much would be covered. That makes no sense because a price was never given to me. If I had been told that the charge of the test is $892.80 before insurance adjustments, of course I would have called HMSA myself or asked the office to check how much my insurance would cover. Later this afternoon, Dr. Harada's nurse "Moya" left me a voice mail to call her back. I returned her call believing that this would be an apology. I was wrong. She unsuccessfully attempted to explain why the test was so expensive. Her excuses included that the test is from Canada and that Dr. Harada was "nice" to put a second patch on me for free because I perspired and some of the first patches fell off my back. Actually, I distinctly remember Dr. Harada saying that it was Nurse Moya's fault for not putting enough tape on the original patches, which is why they had fallen off and a second patch had to be put on for some of the test areas. When I said that this was the nurse's fault (not knowing that I was in fact speaking to the nurse who did my skin test), she became defensive and asked if I was blaming her. She also said she "disagreed" with me. Wow. What a way to speak to an already upset customer/patient. Side note, this nurse does not smile at all and I originally felt uneasy around her. I believe that this was a huge money grab on the part of Dr. Harada's office. It feels very unethical and I am disappointed that an office located at Queen's Medical Center would conduct business in this manner. I have just sent an appeal to HMSA to find a solution for either Dr. Harada's office or HMSA to cover my remaining balance. That being said, now I understand why there are so many negative reviews on his Yelp page. I will never return to this office and want to warn others about the major issues with how this dermatology office is operated. read more

Dr. Harada rocks! He's super cool and fast. He worked on me for both my acne (which was an emergency for my ugly mug) and for a skin tag that I had on my shoulder. I went in for a monster zit and he asked about anything else and I just showed him my shoulder and he zapped that off too, both within 10 minutes! Both proceedures, even though done quickly, worked very well. My zit which was an actual mountain, disappeared within a few days. The skin tag took a little longer but it did shrink and now it's gone! In addition to being good at what he does, he's also a very nice guy and fun to talk to. read more

This Dr. Beware, very immature and unprofessional behavior. Let me explain...I'm a caregiver and brought my patient to an appointment with Dr. Harada. We were late for that app.back in July 2015 .Dr Harada was just leaving and yelled at us for being late and was told He had another app.somewhere else which was much more important. My patient told Her son about His radical behavior whom then wrote a bad review Dr.Harada then threaten us all with a lawsuit if the review was not removed, called my patient and told her she should have kept Her mouth shoot and lecture Her for 1/2 hour. He finally got His way of removing the bad review due to the son was not the person in question and He wasn't there. Well I was, so I decided to come forward my self. I was introduced to Dr. Harada from a family member many years ago. I would have Dr. Harada perform full body scans to make certain that I was free and clear of any skin issues. A couple of years ago, my husband and I had a family emergency and were leaving the island for a funeral the following day. I just happened to have another appointment at Queen's, hours before my scheduled appointment with Dr. Harada. I therefore, visited his office to see if perhaps, he would able to work me in. if not, no biggie....I was willing to reschedule my appointment for a time after I returned to Honolulu. Dr. Harada's secretary was very friendly and asked me to wait, while she asked him if I could be worked in for my check up. As she explained my situation to Dr. Harada, I vividly heard him state, "Well...he'll just have to WAIT!" I was taken aback by his response. But, I also wanted to have my bi-annual check-up. So, I continued to wati. I was eventually seen by Dr. Harada. Once I was being evaluated by Dr. Harada, I again apologized and thanked him for seeing me on such a short notice. He again stated, "We'll you just had to wait!" Dr. Harada didn't seem to care much about anything else,except for his own agenda. I then switched doctors to a more patient friendly doctor (that was discovered on Yelp). Beware of this doctor. He is snippy and unprofessional. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Harada for a long time, and he has always been indifferent and cold during each appointment. However, I tried to stick it out, but recently realized he was treating me with the completely wrong cream, one that is not typically used for the type of wound I have, as explained by numerous other dermatologists. I changed up my regiment to better suit my needs, only to be yelled at by Mr. Harada. Yes, YELLED at. He belittled me and spoke with such condescension that I was utterly shocked, saying how I "am not the doctor" and basically making me feel like an idiot, which was totally unnecessary. I've always known he wasn't very personable, but to see him lose his temper, for no reason, and patronize me like that was just unspeakably unprofessional. And even after his temper tantrum, for some reason, I decided to give him one last chance. Unbeknown to me, I was late for the appointment, and upon stumbling into Harada on my way in, he was gruff and short with me, barking at me that I was late, and that he had more "important" matters to attend to. After all this, I will NOT be returning to this "doctor." I will find someone more competent, professional, kind, and willing to actually listen and consider their patient's feelings. I've been seeing Dr. Harada for over 5 years. He is by far the best dermatologist that I have seen (both on Oahu and on Kauai). Dr. Harada has surgically removed various cysts on my body, treated my adult acne and excema. He also performed a biopsy on my forehead, which resulted in very little scarring -- much like the other surgeries he performed to remove my cysts. Dr. Harada also referred me to Dr. Shim Ching to remove a bony tumor on my forehead that he had been keeping an eye on for the last 3 years. All of my experience with Dr. Harada have been the best and I have referred all of my friends to him, including the ones that live on Kauai. Dr. Harada and his office team are awesome. I first went to him for a skin condition on the recommendation of a few of my friends. He really knows his stuff. After one primary care dr., 2 dermatologists and one allergist, Dr. Harada nailed it. I then thought I would do some cosmetic procedures. Wow, the Dr. is good. I've had fillers and Botox for about 10 years now, but Dr. Harada is amazing. He has a steady hand, a good eye and does even work. No pain, no bleeding, no bruising. I love this office. Age Discrimination It does not matter how good a dermatologist Dr Harada is, if you are over 55 or looking for a long term relationship with your doctor, he is not the man. Two days before my semi-annual appointment, I received a phone call from his office, which I expected to be a reminder. Instead I was told that my appointment had been cancelled since the doctor was no longer taking Medicare patients. Six weeks later I received a form letter with a recommendation for another doctor. Very unfriendly and not a helpful staff at all. They hardly ever answer the phone, there is no voicemail and when they do they cut you short because the doctor is calling them. Hire a receptionist! Geez. I had trouble with my prescription, they said they didn't make any mistakes without even checking the chart, and said there is nothing they can do about it. I explained I am running around in circles here and if I don't get this cleared up the pharmacy won't fill any more prescriptions. The nurse's reply was "TOO BAD! Dr. Harada is absolutely one of the best Dermatologist in the state of Hawaii! He has helped me with my severe acne problems. From white heads. To black heads. To nudular cystic acne the size of pencil erasers. Over a short period of time, my acne problems were treated by Dr. Harada. I'm so happy to say, that my acne issues are gone! Thank God and thanks to Dr. Harada!!! During my high school years I had the occasional zit or pimple here and there. Nothing alarming. I thought I was never going to have an acne problem. Then a year after high school my acne flared up so damn bad. It affected every area of my life, and it hurt my self confidence so bad....... That I became ashamed to look at people. Let alone talk to anyone. Talking to my friends and family was very challenging. When it came to talking to new people......? It was a nightmare. I was so self conscious about my complexion. It really affected my life. My self esteem hit an all time low. One day...... My kids asked me, "Daddy why do you have sores on your face?" That hit me so hard. When my children started to become more and more aware of my acne issues. It pretty much devastated me. I needed help. Dermatologist after dermatologist. I sought help. I sought relief. A cure. Anything to help me with my acne nightmare. Each dermatologist I seen was a recommendation by a friend or by my PCP. It was one day I met Dr. Harada at a gym. A mutual firmed introduced me to Dr. Harada or that time I knew him as Rick. He was and still is a very humble and kind man. He didn't mention nothing about him being a Doctor. Very polite. It was after a few weeks or so of meeting Dr. Harada. I started talking about my acne issues at the gym and someone said the Rick is a dermatologist. So I headed over towards him and said. Rick. I heard your a dermatologist...? If you are? Please help me. He gave me his personal number and his office number and told me to schedule an appointment with his office and let them know that I spoke to Dr. Harada personally. I got an appointment scheduled after making a call. Dr. Harada took me in and started to ask me a series of questions and he wanted to know in the best detail I could give him. What I took for medications, and what I types of procedures I had done, and who I seen fro dermatology. He was very thorough and his bedside manner is bar none the best. He was very concerned and very respectful to me and my concerns. He also takes a great amount of notes along the way. After that was finished, he started me on a series of treatments. After seeing a who's who's list of derms. I have to say I was very skeptical that Dr. Harada would be able to help me. I've seen short term results. I've seen relief. But all of it was only temporary. I tried almost everything! From prescription grade meds to all that bogus crap you see on TV infomercials. Nothing really worked, and if it did? It was only temporary. Dr. Harada said to me that each and every person is different. Basically it's case by case. He mentioned to me that we will be using some of those medications is previously used. We will do some of those treatments I have previously undergone. We will just go about it a certain way that fits you. My skin, my body may react differently. So some things should be avoided and others may not. He made it very clear to me. He wanted me to keep a clear path of communication with him and he wanted me to be very honest about the medications that he prescribed me to take. He told me if I take it 20% of the time? What type of results will I expect to get? So he encouraged me to follow the instructions he gives me very well, and at the best of my ability. After suffering from acne for about seven years. My acne is gone!!!! Most of my twenties I was plagued with horrible acne problems........ Now as I'm moving into my thirties. I am acne free and I am so darn grateful to Dr. Harada and his wonderful staff!!!!!!!!!!!! Having acne as a teen? I had a bit. Nothing crazy. I'm sure it must suck. But I'm not familiar with that. My acne wasn't that bad as a High School kid. Having acne as an adult fresh out of High School? Most of my twenties!?!? I am all to familiar with that..... And let me tell you. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. All I can say is that Dr. Harada has helped me on so many levels! I am so grateful to him! Dr. Harada is awesome! He's my favorite dermatologist. I went in for patch testing appointments a couple of weeks ago. FROM THE START - making an appointment is freakin easy. I told the receptionist it was urgent, and she got me *in *the *same *day BUT of course.. I came in late. To my surprise though, as soon as his nurse saw me, she called me in. I didn't even need to sit! Doctors offices generally take 1-2 hours of my time and it's rare when i can get in and out especially with my schedule. My whole day was better because of this, let me tell y'all: I needed a referral by my regular doctor because it's been awhile. His staff had went ahead and requested information from my doctor including my insurance so I didn't have to do anything but basically show up, so helpful. The appointment was already short notice and i have so many things to do. This one thing would've taken up a lot of my time and they did it for me without me having to ask. I've been to doctors offices that have me call my regular doctor myself and request information for them so once again, it was helpful. AND - Dr. Harada ALWAYS comes in with so much aloha! I always feel comfortable! We just talk story, and he educates me on what is up with my skin. From my acne to eczema to alopecia to weird allergic reactions all over my body, he offered a procedure called patch testing and i did it. ALSO - no dermatologist had ever offered me a full body skin cancer screening. Before, dermatologists focused on main concerns I come in with I guess but they never offered this to me. I'll be scheduling an annual testing for that because in the short amount of time I was in Dr. Harada's office, i was treated with so much care, and aloha. THIS BARELY HAPPENS IN RESTAURANTS - LET ALONE DOCTORS OFFICES, they turned a very hectic, busy day into a great afternoon. He treated my eczema flare & alopecia & acne on the same day and set me up with patch testing appointments. BUT - I have to address that it was very disturbing reading a review on here regarding the skin patch test and I'm addressing it because my experience was completely different. I have to express that it's truly not rocket science to know that you have to hit up your insurance company if you have any questions on pricing. I've known Dr. Harada for years, seen him for all different kinds of issues and pricing (?!?!) - NEVER an issue. PLUS - The instructions on patch testing were easy to read and some instructions are in BOLD. Seriously... it's half a sheet of paper. (really really hard to mess up) the nurse stood there and even read the instructions out loud to me. While it doesn't mention anything pricing... I know that if I wanted to know, I could just open my mouth and ask Doctor and then he would respond back with enough information I'd need to ask my insurance because that's how healthy conversation works. I just like to be prepared and I like to have my shit together BEFORE i go to a physician's office. i always call my insurance and they informed me again and again that all I'd need to ask for is a billing code from any doctor and they will be able to tell me ahead of time what would be covered. This sort of information comes from keeping in contact with my insurance. This is common sense, elementary school knowledge, and honestly can't believe grown people have a problem with doing this. HOWEVER - They taped 8 patches on my back with 10 units of allergens on each of them (i know this because I asked his nurse and she responded back with information = healthy conversation) and she re-taped them again. After 2 days they took them off and after 4 days, Dr. Harada gave me my list of skin care products I can use daily. This process was soo damn easy! I'm very grateful for Doctor Harada. You can tell that he loves what he does and I recommend everyone to see the best dermatologist. I am a patient of Dr. Harada for the past ten years or so and trust his decision making and care. He is always professional, friendly, and personable when I see him. Last December when I came back from visiting my family in California I made an appointment to see Dr. Harada for an IPL treatment for my face and chest. After treatment, he noticed that the mole on the inside of my right foot (because I wear slippers a lot) looked unusual and decided to look into it further with his ocular device. He stated that he didn't like the way the mole looked and to be safe did a biopsy of the mole. He sent it to the lab and sure enough the test result of the biopsy came back where it was recommended to remove the mole entirely in which he did. I'm really grateful that Dr. Harada noticed the mole on my foot and took action immediately. This is one of the reasons why he has been my dermatologist for all these years. read more

BEWARE, like others have said, this doctor is extremely immature and unprofessional. I had a mole on the arch of my foot that needed to be removed. He went ahead and did the procedure when I really should have been sent to a specialist since feet have so many nerves on the bottom. It was one of the most painful things I have ever done and I have had two babies with no pain meds. When I told him how painful it was, he basically said I was whining. He stitched me up and said I could walk out (no crutches). By the time I made it to the car I thought maybe the stitches had broken because I was in a lot of pain but waited till I got home to make sure. I immediately called and went back only to be yelled at by the doctor - "what have you done! You have ruined all my good work". He then proceeded to stitch back up my foot as I was crying and telling him the pain was unbearable. He told me to stop complaining. I went back one more time to have the stitches out and told him that I would NEVER come back again. His ego is out of control and his patient care is bordering on malpractice. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Harada since 2002 . . . so I guess that makes it about 16 years. I had terrible acne as a child, through college, and beyond. Nothing worked until I saw Dr. Harada, and I have continued to see him monthly since then (with some breaks when I lived on the mainland). He helped me find a regimen that works. There were no "quick fixes," but I saw progressive improvement from the first time I saw him, and I learned proper self-care. My friends and family still marvel at how great my skin is especially after all that I had been through. People I meet think I'm 10 years younger than I am!! Aside from acne, Dr. Harada has also treated me for various wounds due to all of my outdoor adventures, conducted annual skin tests, and addressed allergy issues. He and his staff are friendly and down-to-earth. If you want Enya with a waterfall and people talking in hushed tones like it's a spa, go some place else. But if you want someone knowledgeable in whose expertise you can trust, I highly recommend Dr. Harada. read more

I had some skin issues on my cheek. I had previously seen two other dermatologists who were unable to help me. Dr. Harada was the only one who was able to diagnose the problem and treat me. To be fair, perhaps the two unsuccessful diagnosis attempts from the previous doctors had made it easier for Dr. Harada to correctly identify my condition. I did not post any negative reviews for the previous dermatologist for this reason. That being said, Dr. Harada was friendly and straight to the point. He told me exactly what I could and shouldn't expect so that my expectations stayed realistic. I did not have to wait long in the waiting room either on the day of my appointment. He seems to respect my time as much as I should respect his. I am disappointed that he isn't taking new patients. My brother is also in need of a good dermatologist. I was visiting Hawaii and my friends there recommended Dr. Harada. I have these growths on my neck that rub against my shirt and get caught on my necklace. I called them skin tags but he call them acrochordons. I asked him to freeze them but he said because I'm Indian and have dark skin I might get blemishes from the liquid nitrogen. So instead he cut them off with sharp scissors and forceps. He offered to give me injections of numbing medicine first but told me sometimes the shot is worse than the scissors and with 30 skin tags that would have been a lot of injections! There was some bleeding which his nurse stopped with a big q-tip and some liquid that stung but helped stopped the bleeding. She gave me some gauze to apply with pressure if I bled in the rental car and also told me to stay out of the ocean for 3 days:(. That's hard when I'm on vacation with the family for one week but I followed his instructions. My friends said Dr.Harada is very busy but if I mention I'm from the East Coast and he accepted my insurance I might get lucky. I sure am. No more growths that get caught on my shirt. He warned me I would get more as I get older and just ask my local dermatologist to do the same procedure a couple years from now. I would definitely come visit him again next time I come to Waikiki and recommend him but i don't think he's taking new patients anyways. read more
