My son went here on a day trip over to Halifax, he is gluten and dairy intolerant so I hunted this place up for him on the find me gluten free app. Their advertised picture of their fish and chips looked amazing. He sent me a picture of what he received and it was two thin slivers of fish and a small portion of fries. We are pretty sure the fish was Jane's store bought fish, tasteless and terrible. I told him he should complain, being a shy guy he didn't want to but I encouraged him to. The owner told him he had to pay and never come back. I was absolutely stunned that an owner would conduct himself this way. So he ate what he could of the disgusting meal because he was hungry and payed 16.50 + 5 dollars for making it gluten free. He felt sick immediately after eating this meal so pretty sure it wasn't gluten free, so celiacs beware this is not a safe place to eat for anyone celiac or gluten intolerant. If you're ever engaged in a conversation about the top fish and chip places in Halifax, several names are bound to come up. Everyone has their own preferences, dictated by personal tastes and individual experiences, but the same places tend to pop up and Willman's is one of those. Located on Isleville, just a block past the Hydrostone market, the restaurant is very clean and much more recently renovated than your typical fish and chip shack, especially ones as old as Willman's which has been around since the '40s. My buddy and I popped in around 7pm on a Tuesday, so there were only one or two other tables occupied at any given time. Perusing the menu, they have all the deep fried fare that you would expect at a place like this, but also some more unique additions that fleshed out the menu in a more unique fashion. They have a few poutine choices, including Newfie poutine (stuffing/dressing added), which I always appreciate seeing. Cod tongues in the appetizer section also added to their seafood cred. There's also a handful of baked fish options for the more health conscious among us, and interestingly a fairly large pizza section. I'm not sure how many of these they would sell with Salvatore's just a block away, but hey, not everyone likes fish I guess. Feeling hungry and wanting to try as much of their seafood as I could, I settled on the seafood platter which comes with one piece of fish with the batter of your choosing (light or traditional), fried clams, fried scallops and fries. Coleslaw and gravy were options, but I turned them down, just opting for some tartar sauce, and there were a few options for vinegars as well. They have Propeller on tap, but I opted for a Sprite instead, as somehow in my mind that seemed like the lighter option. Our food came out fairly quickly, heaping piles of brown, deep fried goodness (not in the health sense, obviously). My fish was a good size, and really I wouldn't have wanted it any larger given how much food there was on my plate. It was a deep golden brown, and the fish inside flaked easily with a fork. The fish might not have been *the* best I've ever had, but it was very good. I can't say if the tartar sauce is house-made, or taken from a bottle and put in a dipping cup, but I'm not picky when it comes to that stuff anyway, and it added its trademark zing and depth of flavour to each bite. The fries were a bit of letdown though; hand cut, but not double fried, they were limp and not nearly as crispy as they could/should have been. The clams were as spot on as fried clams can be. Some of the thinnest pieces were a little bit on the chewy side, but with something so irregularly shaped, it's got to be nearly impossible to get them all cooked 100% perfectly. The meat itself had a great, fresh clam flavour and the batter was nice and crispy. The scallops were bivalve perfection, with a light batter and super moist meat inside. The owner saw to us over the course of our meal and was super friendly the whole time. I'm not sure what the typical payment procedure is, but we ended up going to the counter after a little bit of a wait once we were done eating and our plates cleared. With a warm atmosphere and great seafood, Willman's is definitely earning their reputation. read more

After arriving to our accommodations in Halifax, which itself was an adventure, we were famished. My fiance and I looked on Yelp to see what was close by (walking distance) and found Willman's Fish and Chips. Usually I find the best spots, but my fiance has that honour now. The interior of Willman's is very nice and clean. We arrived to Willamn's about 30 minutes before they closed and we asked if it was ok to dine in. Maybe it's just an east coast thing but I was pleasantly surprised when the young man said yes we could and without any attitude. A few more people had come in to get take-out. So even near closing, this place is hopping. We both had the 2 piece traditional with poutine (mine regular, his Newfie) and shared a Propeller IPA. We both should've gotten 1 piece, even I the big eater. The Newfie poutine is a must try for out of towners. Don't let "bread dressing" confuse you. It's delicious soft herbed croutons. The gravy was so good. But the cheese was not proper :( their one and only mistake but it seems to be the way it goes around Canada. The fish was so good! The batter was crispy and right and not really greasy...I mean it is fish and chips but they did a good job of minimizing it. Food was plentiful and prices are great. Customer service is even better, as the young man came running out to us to return our water bottle because we forgot it on the table. He answered my fiance's question about Newfie poutine with enthusiasm and knowledge. Fish and chips here are passable. Nothing special. Crisp Propeller beer on tap. Reasonably priced. 2 stars because the service is downright weird. Not sure what's going on here. These people have no idea how to properly serve a customer. Don't ask someone if they want coleslaw with their meal. Bring it or don't. Also, when I ask for malt vinegar, don't correct me and say "do you mean fish n chips vinegar?" Never really saw something like this. Nice enough people. Just absolutely no clue. read more

I ordered the seafood platter(highly recommend) and the clams were fantastic, the fish was incredible, best batter- the food was hot and ready so quickly. Incredible. A fantastic place to visit if you're looking for great fish and chips. We ordered the seafood platter so we could try everything at once since it was our first visit. Sadly, they had just run out of clams so we were offered extra scallops or fish. Scallops of course! Our order was on the table in minutes, so hot we had to wait a few minutes to dig in. Absolutely delicious fish, we went with the lighter Lucien's batter. Most impressive were the scallops, so often they're overcooked, but these were perfect, and so sweet. Hand cut fries were excellent as well. Our server was alone and quite busy, yet still attentive. It was nice to see the cook bringing orders out when she was tied up with taking orders. Nothing sat waiting for pickup. I'm sure this would have been five stars if the clams had been available, simply judging by the quality of the items we were able to get. I decided to give my once-favorite F&C place another try and stopped by for lunch. The owner, Lucien, was a perfect host. Making a point to stop at each table to chat and joke with diners. I decided to risk slipping into a deep fried beer coma and got a pint of Propeller ESB with lunch. I couldn't decide on clams, fish or scallops so I got all three in the seafood sampler. I sipped on my beer and chilled. It struck me, for a F&C shop the dining area is clean, functional but still comfortable. It was a warm, Fall day and the many windows gave a great view of the golden Hydrostone foliage. The respectable sized plate arrived in short order. First thing I noticed was that seafood all had a slightly different looking golden batter. Got to like a place that treats clams and scallops differently. I doused the fish and fries in malt vinegar. The hand-cut fries were perfectly prepared. Too bad the fish was swallowed up by a too-thick batter. Willman's offers a lighter batter option too; I'll try that next time. The fish/batter ratio is way off on the regular offering. The whole clams, although tasty were on the small side. I prefer plumper, juicier clams. The scallops were nice and fresh but also shrimpy. Shrimpy- see what I did there?! It felt like kind of a waste to splurge on the platter when the scallops and clams were tiny morsels. It is a small thing, but I was dinged a buck for something on my bill and I have no idea what it was. The only thing I can think of was the lemon slice I asked for. I did get half a lemon but still you should advise customers of extra charges in advance. And I don't think a F&C shop should charge for condiments. And I don't know if the beer counteracted the grease but there was no afternoon coma for me! Win! I am happy to give Willman's a very good, updated review. I look forward to being a regular once again. Hello On December 18th was my mother's bday. She turned 82. She wasn't feeling to good so she decided to order some fish and chips from Willmans. 2 Orders, 1 for her and ne for myself. I am her son Andrew. Her name is Juanita. Because they use a delivery service we had to order from Uber Eats. The food arrived in a timely manner, but was RAW and we couldn't eat it. We called Willman and complained 5 minutes after order arrived and told them. To which their reply was to bring the food back. We do not have a vehicle as we explained that's why we ordered delivery. Then was told the manager would call me back the next day. I left my name and phone number. 48 hours later no reply. So I called Willmans back and finally got a manager on phone. He told me he knew nothing about it and took my name and phone number again and said he would call me back in couple hours. My mother got tired of having the RAW Fish and chips sitting around so threw them out after 3 days. I have pictures and also complained to Uber Eats. They told me to contact Willmans. So today Dec 21 st I contacted Willmans again and was told the manager is on vacation until Jan 5th. I asked about our refund and was told there will be no refund as there was no food returned. This is not right. My mother not only had her bday dinner ruined but now is out $44 the cost of the food and the Uber delivery. I explained that if we did not get a refund I would send letters to you and other news agencies and was told to go ahead and do that and then they hung up on me. I have been here many times. It is a great 'go to' place to have haddock (choice of batter) choose the light one. The home fries are delicious as is the coleslaw. Also had the clams too. Awesome fish and chips. Got the lightly breaded lucien fish and it was perfect. Light, crispy, not too greasy and the fish was fresh and moist. Fries were only average, but we came for the fish, so who cares. Nice seating on the deck and super friendly wait staff. The first time my husband and I went to Willman's we were in the area and decided to try it. We both had fish and chips, he had the regular batter and I had the light batter, they were both delicious and the coleslaw was fantastic, chunkier pieces and creamy dressing. We are transplants from Ontario and had the best F&C ever their and we looking for a good place here, after a few other tries with no success, we finally found a great place. The second time we had the same thing (as we both love F&C), but this time I decided to try the large size, it was still delicious, but for lunch a bit much. We are going again tonight and I think I might have the medium size portion tonight, still have to have the coleslaw and my hubby will still have the regular batter only cooked a bit longer. read more

Finally tried this place out today, and I'm very glad I did. I showed up at what was clearly not a peak time - mid-afternoon on a Sunday. The place was completely empty and no one was at the counter, so I just went ahead and seated myself (didn't appear to be the type of place you have to wait to be seated anyway). I waited a few minutes, made a few noises to let someone know I was there - cleared throat, scraped the chair back a bit, coughed, etc. Eventually someone came out and brought me a menu. The menu was more varied than I expected - even had a whole pizza section. But I was there for the good stuff. I almost went for the small clams and chips @ $8.50, but I figured I couldn't pass up the deal of $5.99 for a 1-piece fish and chips made with haddock. I also ordered a side of coleslaw at the server's suggestion. My food arrived very promptly and looked as great as it tasted. Perfectly battered haddock, hand-cut fries cooked just right, and the freshest coleslaw I've ever had. The grease level was just what I was looking for - just a smidge of grease. You don't order fish and chips without expecting some grease, though, am I right? The fries were ever so lightly salted, which I appreciate as I prefer to season to my own taste. Nothing worse than biting into an over-salted fry. Okay, well... yes there are worse things than that, but you get my drift. I also had my choice of white or malt vinegar, plus a delicious tartar sauce. As fresh as the coleslaw was, it was slightly lacking in the flavour department. I understand the space has recently been renovated, and they've done a great job. Very clean and modern - I was expecting much less from a fish 'n chips joint, I must admit. Prompt service, once they realized I was there. A few others patrons showed up during my meal. When I walked by a couple hours later, I was not at all surprised to see a full house. It's been a while since I signed in and wrote a review (still waiting for an improved Blackberry app) but I couldn't clam up about Willman's. It was the first time I stopped for takeout since the the resurrection of the permanent restaurant. The new diggs are SUCH an improvement over the old building. A much larger/nicer dining room and a washroom (interior unknown...I didn't have to go...and I only mention that there is a washroom because I'm pretty sure the old Willman's didn't have one) greet you and from what I could see the kitchen is bigger and better than ever to cook the food which, as far as my experiences have allowed me to say, is yummy! The menu doesn't seem to be different than my first visit (in the old building and I had the classic 2pc Fish and Chips to go) and I could find fault in the fact that it looked like it could have been the same piece of paper that I ordered from a year ago...but...the choice of the small clams and chips makes this complaint disappear. I was surprised to be asked if I wanted my meal cooked medium or well done. I thought, 'You can choose how your clams are cooked?' Apparently you can! I asked for medium but added that I'd like my fries (which are not frozen) well done. I had time to reply to a direct message and started a phone call when I was told that my order was ready. Talk about quick!! I brought my dinner home...it was well after 5pm and I had lunch at 9am, so hunger may have played a factor in how much I enjoyed the clams and fries. Nah! They were just really good. The clams were lightly coated and crispy and not too greasy. Kudos, Willman's....I will bring the pickiest fish eater I know to try your wares the next time she visits. I think I'll give here a 3.5 Tried it for lunch on a sunny Thursday in August. Only two tables were taken out of probably 10 tables. Guessing the place has a capacity for 40 or 50? Simple, very clean atmosphere with lots of natural lighting, wooden tables, some artwork, faux-stone service counter. We were greeted immediately and the food came pretty quickly. Not much chit chat from the server but that is fine for me, just had an efficient quality about him. I don't see their menu online anywhere to check the prices. My Seafood platter was quite good with two narrow pieces of lightly battered fish, three or four good sized scallops, a handful of clams and homemade fries. Tartar sauce in a bottle on the table. You can have it cooked to your liking (heavy or light batter, etc) and I found the fish cooked very well, fresh and tender. My friend had the 2 pc fish & chips and liked his as well. I'd definitely go back here anytime. Came back on a drizzly Thursday in Feb 2018 for lunch again with the same friend as last time. We were the only customers upon arrival and took a table in the corner. Very friendly service from the owner and he advised us it would take about 10 minutes to cook, which is a good gesture for those on work lunches. I am trying to eat healthier so opted for the baked haddock. It was delicious, seasoned with some kind of mix and cooked well. Good, sauteed veggies on the side with a baked potato. Lots of olive oil on the bottom of the plate, but it didn't interfere with the foods in any way to make them too greasy or soggy. My friend had the 2 pc fish & chips again but requested one piece with the regular batter and one piece done in the light pan fried style, to compare the two. He was happy again but does prefer the lighter fried style. Have been back a few times since, including bringing my parents and they are 'safe, homestyle cooking' eaters from Cape Breton, so I figured it was a safe bet. So what exactly does the non-seafood lover do when eating at a place that specializes in Seafood? Turns out Willman's has a few options: There are a number of non-fishy appetizer options including hummus and pita and sweet potato fries with curry mayo. If you're in for a greasy meal a la fish and chips, you could try the chicken fingers, the hamburger, the chicken burger or SURPRISE the extensive pizza menu! I went with chicken in mind and tried the chicken fingers. They were cooked well but really weren't anything special. (I expected it in a place where fish is the specialty so this wasn't a heart breaker). Fair warning, your only option for dipping sauces are a tasty smoky spiced BBQ sauce or hot sauce in 3 degrees. I tried the BBQ and it was a tasty surprise. Tara loves her fish and opted for the 3 piece I shared her chips and have to admit the chips were done well, hot and crispy and perfect with vinegar. Our service was quick and efficient and owner Lucien came by our table as we were finishing up to ask how we enjoyed our meal. He's a welcoming and gracious host. Lucien has recently renovated the long standing neighbourhood favorite spot and I enjoyed the update. There are amazing automated awnings for the patios outside which make it a great place to eat during the warmer months rain or shine. If you're in the mood for a Fish 'n Chips fix (or non-seafood as your choice may be) I reckon its worth your visit. read more

My wonderful fiance has been on a bit of a quest to find the perfect spot for Fish and chips lately. Fish and chips have never been my favourite meal, but yesterday, I was more than happy to tag along and sample the wares at Willman's, as I have read so many fantastic reviews. I have to say that I was not disappointed! I opted for the 2 piece "Lucien style" and he for the 3 piece "traditional" After our order was a placed, we chatted and noted how nice and clean our surroundings were. A short time later, our meals arrived. The portions were perfect. Mine had two lovely, lightly battered pieces of fish. The fish itself was moist and flaky and tasted nothing but fresh. The Lucien style batter allowed the fish to be the star of the meal. The fries were nicely done, and I admittedly ate more than I thought I would, not really being a "fry" person either. His batter, was thick, crisp and golden. With each bite of fish I could hear the crispy snap of the batter. He chose to have a poutine as side and it looked delish. It was topped with a nice portion of yummy looking cheese curds. I tasted the gravy and it was wonderful. We both had a side of coleslaw, as well as some homemade tarter sauce. I have to say, that this was a fantastic dining experience. From food, to surroundings, to service. For a girl who is not crazy about fish and chips, I was left wanting more. Wanting more to the point that I am considering heading back for a repeat performance this weekend. So light, crisp and fresh, mmm.... YUM! That's the best description of Willman's. It's just really...YUM! I think Willman's probably has the best fish and chips in the city. They've been around FOREVER, under a few different owners, but Lucien (owner) and his staff have really worked hard to make this place great for their customers over the past few years. And it shows! They recently did some great renovations and have a shiny new restaurant to call home. Excellent little seafood place in a quiet part of town just outside of the Halifax harbor. The seafood chowder is great and comes with a massive dinner roll. The cup is more than enough because your entree portions are huge. I had the 2pc fish (traditional batter) and chips, but upgraded my chips to poutine. Excellent. The rest of the table had fried clams and scallops and every really seemed to enjoy their food. I stopped by here after searching for some authentic fish and chips passing through Halifax on a business trip. Was not disappointed. I opted for the light batter and it was just about perfect. Not overly battered or greasy and did not over power the fish under it. The fries come with a nice gravy and the coleslaw is slightly sweet, which I prefer. Washed it down with local beer from propeller. It was a simple, delicious meal. I just wish I could try the seafood chowder that people recommended. They apparently ran out. Prices are extremely reasonable and service was great. Real Canadian hospitality that is often missing in large cities. A spot like this would thrive with in and out business in Toronto, but in Halifax it's nothing out of the ordinary. I'd highly recommend anyone coming from out of town. We were looking forward to great fish and chips so went to Willman's. What a disappointment. Will never go back or recommend it to anyone. We ordered calamari and 2 orders of fish and chips. The calamari was so tough it couldn't be chewed and the breading fell off. It was horrible. One piece of fish was a reasonable size but the other one was very small. They should not have served them at the same table for the same price. The serving size of the fries was very small and mostly consisted of bits and pieces of the ends of the potatoes. All in all it was a bad choice and regret not sending the meal back and leaving. I've always heard that this restaurant has the best food. Maybe that was years ago. read more

There is always a competiton for BEST fish and chips in Halifax. I honestly think there is more a top 5 TIE, but Willman's is MOST definitely on that list! (And may I add, Halifax prob has some of the best F&C's in the world...so put that into perspective!) I have recently moved into the North End and just one of many great things is that Willman's is just a few blocks away! They have avery friendly and informative staff, there is a pretty wicked patio area, they are very well priced and most importantly DELICIOUS! I remember being brought here by my dad when I was young and him going on about how this place has been here for years, and it is one of the best in the Province...and although I rarely paid attention to anything he said, this information really stuck with me. My only tidbit of info would be they are a small staff and are busy so, be patient and be aware they occasionally run out of things, clams seem to be my Holy Grail here, I am always looking but have yet to have them...One Day though! read more

This was our first meal in Canada and we were not disappointed. The haddock was fresh and juicy, with a light Lucien batter, the digby clams were delish, scallops sweet and moist and the service is outstanding. The restaurant was spacious and bright and cheery. The poutine was a novelty for us but we have nothing to compare it to. The fries were soggy but perhaps that's how Canadians like it. Tried this spot a few more times, awful just awful. Not worth the long wait and not fresh at all but claims so on menu, poor taste indeed.

Ordered for the first time tonight & unfortunately our food was inedible. Breading came off the shrimp & was soggy sitting at the bottom of our container. Came with no cocktail sauce like advertised & since the breeding came off, ultimately tasted like nothing. What a great find. 4 people in our party and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The chowder was awesome and the "lightly" fried fish was outstanding. Our tour guide took us there and we were shocked that it was located in such a quaint residential neighborhood. We would go back again. The beer was also great.
