I stopped in with hopes of getting my wife's necklace repaired (toddlers are stronger than you think) and I was quickly assisted and the necklace was brought back to be fixed while I waited. Moments later my wife's necklace was returned good as new. This was already a great experience but as the staff member handed me the necklace back she gave me the "Have a good day!" which gave me pause for a moment as I was expecting to hear the cost and begin a transaction. The repair was on the house! Thanks to the staff at Fredrick Jewelers for being driven by relationships and not transactions. Went in, Angela was so very helpful and took great care of me - making sure that my watch that I've had for almost 25 years was well taken care of also. Although this review is to address the poor customer service of particularly one employee, I feel the actions of 1 employee is a reflection of the business as a whole. This past Saturday morning I walked into Frederick Jewelers with my father between 10am-11am. I lost the backing to one of my diamond earrings and wanted to buy new backings. The lady (unfortunately did not catch her name) we interacted with brought out some backings, but they didn't seem tight enough. She said they might be able to tighten them and had to take my earnings to the back. I politely asked her if there was any way they could do it up front instead of in the back. The lady looked at me and handed me back the earrings and said nothing. I asked 'is something wrong? Is it not possible?'. She then angrily said 'that is very insulting for you to even ask that'. I proceeded to tell her that in the past we did have an issue with something like this and this is why I am asking.' My father also clarified by saying, 'it wasn't at your store so no disrespect to the store, but just because we had an incident before we like to be extra cautious'. The lady proceeded to be very disrespectful to us and kept saying this is so insulting to us. That's when I had enough and told the lady 'it's ok we don't have to do business together' then left. I am quite aware of the sensitivity of asking this, however there is a way to approach this in a respectful way to the customer. I am in customer service and I know that the way this was handled is completely unprofessional. To throw back earrings at a customer and say they are insulting by asking this is not the way to respond. If that is something that can't be done then it is easy for the employee to say 'unfortunately I'm sorry but we can't accommodate that request cause all the tools are in the back'. Very simple. I have several friends in the diamond business and so I asked them if I was out of line by asking and was told multiple times that it is very common for customers to ask that especially if it's something expensive. They also said a lot of stores have glass windows so customers can see the work being done cause they know they will ask this. If I spent $25,000 on a piece of jewelry I feel it is my right as a customer to ask certain things and it is the right of the store to have a response. However, that response needs to be professional and not rude. If she said it is not possible than I would completely understand but her approach was completely out of line. Made me question a lot of things about the store and how they train their employees. I would never recommend this place to anyone I know. It's a shame as it is located in Bloomfield where a lot of my family and friends live who do enjoy fine jewelry. All that business will now be lost by Frederick's and gained from another establishment that knows how to treat their customer. read more
