My motorcycle key sheared in half and got stuck in my passenger seat lock, I called Fred's this morning and even though I was told they were pretty booked up they still sent somebody out to me. Jeff showed up and instantly got to work on my bike, had a great conversation while he was working. Could get the key out so he pulled the lock cylinder out and removed the key that way, he then properly put everything back together and started try to make me a key. He ended up making me a key as well as a spare key!!!! Thought I was going to pay out the butt but the price was beyond fair, I can't put into words how happy I was with my service. Fred's is the BOMB! My ignition went out on my Jeep and after calling 4-5 other locksmiths my coworker reminded me about Fred's. Fred's does the keys for my job and they're known for having speciality and older style keys--and being reasonably priced. I called em up and sure enough they gave me the lowest quote. I immediately towed my car there and lo and behold THEY FIXED IT! Not only did they fix it they fixed it in the time they said they would. Gary told me he would have it ready in the morning. He called at 8:30. They were professional and efficient. On top of that they reprogrammed my keypads. The same keypads that the Jeep dealership told me could not be programmed. Fred's is a small shop on a corner in Midtown that's not the greatest. They take care of anything lock and key related, including car ignition key switches, safes, helping to get your car open after you've locked your keys inside, and more. They've even been able to copy an antiquated skeleton key for me! Who even knows how, but they do it. I thought to send good vibes to this place even though it's years later and I now live in La Jolla, California. When I lived in Michigan a place referred me to come to Fred's when I had a tuner car. I wanted to get an alarm installed so I took it into Fred and his shop did s great job at a great price. I recall them bring really friendly and helpful. They have been in business for years and I highly recommend this place for those of you who still live in Michigan. I called almost a dozen places before I called Fred's. It should've been my first call based on their outstanding fast and personable service. I was there with my five year old son and while we were waiting in the lobby he noticed a Ray Charles toy on the table. After some encouragement from one of the shop employees (could've been Fred) he started to play with it and ask me all kinds of questions about Ray Charles. The employee was amused by my son's inquisitive nature and gave him a dollar as a prize. Fred's handles all my lock and key related needs. They are quick, professional and not too pricey. Thcey have these really cool keys where you can get the key itself imprinted with colored designs like the Simpsons, the Michigan block M logo, the Detroit Tigers logo, etc. The only drawback is the guy who works the front (old guy, not the manager, with the squinty eyes) calls everyone "hun" and flirted with the 15 year old girl I had with me. CREEPY!!! I own a Maserati Levante. Sounds great, right? The down side is everything is inordinately complicated and expensive. I wanted to have programmed a backup key fob which I purchased on ebay. The dealer cost would have been, as I said, expensive! I called other Locksmiths in my home (Thumb) area and found no one legitimately capable of doing the work. Granted I had to drive 50 miles each way and find the Fred's next to the Masonic Temple in downtown Detroit, but nevertheless, my experience was a TOTALLY SATISFACTORY experience. I verified, in advance by phone, Fred's could and wound do the work, in a conversation with Brian who told me he had previously programmed a Maserati key fob. I arrived for the work (no appointments accepted) on Saturday when they opened at 9am. The counterman, Tim was very pleasant and the programmer who did my work, Steve, was everything one could hope to hire--expert, pleasant and efficient. The cost was $65, exactly what Brian had quoted and I'm sure what would have been the tax at the Maserati dealer. I felt comfortable in every aspect of what was really an adventure to the heart of Detroit that thereafter included my wife and me having fun at the Eastern Market which is relatively close by. I went in because I needed to duplicate a key that can be hard to find blanks for. I only waited a couple of minutes because there were two people in the shop when I got there. I had the misfortune of losing my only car key. So I went and got a duplicate from a dealership. Following the reprogram instructions given by the dealership wasnt working so I had to call a locksmith to reprogram the key for me. When I went to Freds the next day and spoke to Sarge, he gave me the same reprogramming instructions the dealership gave me, stating that it usually works if the ignition hasnt been changed or was otherwise having issues(hoping to save me a few $$ which I appreciated). He told me the cost of having someone come to me in the case it didn't work (he was confident it would). I triend the reprogramming instructions again, still nothing. When I called to have someone come out, they were there within 10-15 minutes (Thank God because it was freezing cold ). Even though I informed the tech I had a key over the phone, thankfully he brought another because the dealership sold me the wrong key! (james martin chevrolet on woodward near w. Grand Blvd. They will never get any business from me, my friends, family, associates and hopefully YOU). The tech (Jimmy) showed me and explained the difference in key types. This is actually the 2nd time I had to get a new key. My first replacement I got from a different GM dealership and had ZERO issues reprogramming it myself, so when the self-programming didnt work this time, I found it strange. While James Martin Chevrolet giving me the wrong key cost me additional expense I would of otherwise avoided, Im glad Freds was able to come out quickly and get me situated. LADIES: If you're looking for a confidence boost, Fred's is your place! The wonderful man whom I had the pleasure of working with just insisted on paying me so many kind compliments, despite my clear refusal. From the moment I walked up to the counter, he thought I was a teacher (because I had so much class), and made sure I felt extremely comfortable (not singled out and threatened at all) as the only woman in the store. He kept the loud and forceful compliments going, even though I insisted I just wanted to have some keys made and be on my way. But my status as a customer in his store had nothing to do with how he felt was appropriate to speak to me, especially in front of the other male customers and his male colleagues. He certainly didn't want to deal with a fight from someone refusing his generosity! His colleagues were just as kind, and not for a second did they interrupt the situation and make sure I could just get the keys made that I came in for. In short, AVOID Fred's as a lady, unless of course you'd like to be so livid you're practically throwing things at the man you get to work with so you can just get some keys made. Apparently making keys requires insulting and humiliating your customers to the point they are scared to say anything because they're alone in an unfamiliar store and area, surrounded by men who could care less how disrespected you are. read more

The guy who answered the phone was pretty rude. I gave this place a call to see if I could get my keys replaced for an out of state vehicle. I told them I lost my registration but had my ID and current insurance documents to verify the VIN#. They insisted I needed a copy of my registration or title (which would take weeks to get a duplicate from the lien holder in Texas) and they couldn't do the job.
