The new owners of this once excellent shoes repair place is no longer a good option to have repairs made. I wasn't given good advice regarding shoe repair. I won't go into details other then they were unprofessional. Places like Fred's are a dying breed. It's going to be sad when you cannot get things repaired that still have a useful life. I took my Cole Haan boots there to have new heels installed. This, after taking them to another repair shop that refused to work on them. Not only did Fred do a great job with my shoes, it was a very reasonable price. I sent them a picture and they let me know that they can be repaired and gave me a ballpark estimate.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ran the shoes over there and picked them up two weeks later. They were as good as new! I thought I was absolutely screwed before finding them. They repaired a $1200 pair of shoes for me for $30. The best $30 I have spent in my life. I only went here because I had a belt that needed an extra hole placed. The store looks a little run down from the outside, no big deal there. However, as soon as you step in, you're greeted with the smell of tobacco. I was wearing a mask and could still smell it. If you're sensitive to smells like this I would avoid and go elsewhere. I was out of the store in less than a couple mins so it wasn't as big of an issue for me. The owner - I'm assuming he's Fred - quickly placed a hole in my belt and all was well...until I checked the hole itself. It was a cleanly-cut hole but it's bigger than the other holes in my belt. It's also slightly unevenly lined because of this. Kind of a bummer because the belt was expensive but luckily you don't notice the uneven hole while wearing it. I will say that the owner was very sweet and he didn't charge me a dime to do this. I even insisted on giving him a tip but he wouldn't budge. All he said was "don't worry about it, just have a nice day." Hard to find sweet people like this so I really have to give this place 4/5 stars regardless of the work done to my belt and the smell of the store. read more

It won't be long before we will witness the near disappearance of the neighborhood shoe repair shop. We live in a throw away society and repairs are becoming a thing of the past. However, for now, Fred's is here and delivering great service at a fair price for those who don't want to trash their wearables to only jump on Amazon for a full replacement. And while I have used Fred's for shoe repair, most recently I took in a pair of well used elk skin chopper mittens for seam repairs, which he did, for $10. Amazing. Fred's Shoe Repair on 10th Avenue North in Hopkins, just saved a favorite pair of my 25 year old shoes. He did a beautiful job. I couldn't be happier with the result. He and his wife operate a little shop just off the Main Street. It's pretty old fashioned and pretty cool, something like you might have seen 40 year's ago. They have a lot of different shoey type stuff; insoles, polish, etc. I'd go back with any shoe related project. read more

I got my shoes back today and i was very displeased. I asked for new shoe insoles to be placed in my heals. What i got was shoe insoles glued in unevenly. Sloppy work and i could have places insoles in myself. I am very much not happy with the outcome. Looking at how to remove it and put shoe insoles in that i actually like. read more

Nested in the middle of Hopkins 100 feet off Main Street is the coolest little shoe repair shop that repairs just about anything that requires heavy stitching. Fred's has been delivering "sustainable" and "earth-friendly" long before Al Gore invented the Internet. We first found Fred when my daughters horse reins needed repair. Since them Fred's had repaired English riding boots, cowboy boots, and shoe heels. All at a fraction of the new price. During one visit when I asked about shoe polish, Fred took the time to explain what chemicals make for a good shoe while preserving the leather. Many shoe polishes actually dry out leather. Who knew? Now I do! Our most recent repair required new heals on my daughters unique Sorrel slide boots. I'm not sure where finds the stuff, but he found replacement heals. Total cost &18.. Fred's is an independent Business with hours that are convenient but allow this two person gang to maintain a life outside of their Business. Every time I've taken time to be respectful and explain a dire situation, Fred's has found a way to deliver in time. Fred's only accepts cash and check. Be prepared and recognize Fred is a craftsman and not a soulless retail chain. Credit card processing eats profits and paying by cash allows Fred's to remain focused on an old world craft and keep prices in line. This place was the worst - they are chain smokers, and all my leather shoes came back reeking if cigarette smoke. Further, I requested heel tips on a pair of expensive Italian pumps, and they put cheap metal toe tips on by mistake - and scratched the leather in the bargain. All the work done was mediocre at best, and topped off by surly service. Do NOT go here. read more

I brought in 2 pairs of men's split toe dress shoes that were is good shape except for the leather soles (or whatever it was) was basically worn through on both pairs. One pair brown, one pair black. These shoes were all broken in and I really didn't want to have to go find new shoes to replace them. Fred did an amazing job in less than 2 weeks. These shoes look brand new and feel great. All new soles that will last for years and the best part is I don't have to break in new shoes. 2 pairs done for basically the price of one pair of new shoes. read more
