We always use free beach ride when we want to go to the beach for a few drinks. We have never had a bad experience. Chappie and Stacey are our favorites, they always go above and beyond for us. Chappie has been a great driver for us for a couple years now and Stacey is a newer driver but they're both great drivers and they always have a positive attitude. We were in the St. Pete beach area on vacation and our VRBO had some cards for Free Beach Ride. We used them a couple times to drop us off at the beach, restaurants, coffee shops, bars etc. All destinations were within 10 minutes driving wise from our place. Not a single driver had mentioned to us what an appropriate tip would be, nor is it listed anywhere on the website, nor the voicemail. On the last night, after we arrived to our destination, the driver messaged us saying we should be tipping more. Per his recommendations, he said an expected tip is $3- $5/ per person. It does not matter on the distance, apparently. The drivers themselves were mostly normal, however there were a few that made us slightly uncomfortable. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience but for the time you wait for your ride, the tipping price and the old mini vans... It's not worth your time. Just Uber or Lyft! read more

If you're on any Gulf beach from Pass-A-Grille up to Clearwater, this is a great service alternative to a taxi or Uber. There are pros and cons though. I'll just list all my thoughts and let you decide what aspects are important to you: 1) On busy evenings, such as weekend nights, they can be hard to get on the phone as I think it's just one person answering all the calls, and then having to call the drivers in between to dispatch them since they don't work via app or radio like a taxi service or Uber. You can get around this by using their app or website. The app is really just a form submit that asks you for number of people, phone number, pickup and destination addresses, so it's not high tech like Uber, and using the website accomplishes the same thing. The app sends the information to them, and from what I can tell, they just forward it as a text message to the closest driver. You'll typically get a call from the dispatch or the driver within a few minutes giving you an ETA on pickup. 2) My experience has been that since they do work via phone and text messages, the drivers will talk on the phone and read texts while they drive. Obviously this will make some people uncomfortable. 3) My experience on St Pete Beach has been that they are often available ten minutes or so sooner than Uber. 4) I personally never tip less than $5 if I'm taking a short ride alone or with my wife, more if it's a group or a longer ride. If you're a single person getting a ride of five miles or less, Uber will usually be slightly cheaper if you're not in surge pricing, but you'll wait longer. Additionally, on weekend nights out on the beaches, Uber is often in surge pricing mode since there are not a lot of drivers that hang around the beaches. If going a bit further, I feel obligated to tip more, but then they start to become cheaper than Uber, especially if it's surge pricing. 5) I've only experienced Free Beach Ride drivers being in mini vans. So you can fit a lot more people in the vehicle than a regular Uber, and UberXL is often not in range of the beaches anyway, so the more people you have, the better the deal gets. 6) They don't have tracking on their app, so don't expect an Uber experience. The drivers are good about calling and giving you an ETA as well as when they're on their way to get you if there was a wait. read more

I wish I could give 0 Stars for this company. We paid a lot of money for them to shuttle my guests to my wedding from the hotel. It was a 2 minute drive from the hotel to our venue, so his job was super easy. The driver came and transported everyone to the wedding, which was fine. Our reception ended at 11 and it was getting cold on the beach so our "transport coordinator" texted the driver requesting him to start picking people up at 11. He picked up 1 set of family members at 11 and never showed back up till 11:45. My family members (over 20 people) HAD TO WALK TO THEIR HOTEL at 11:30 at night after waiting for him to never show. It was dangerous after a wedding when everyone is drinking, on a busy road. When complaining to the company, they had 0 remorse and basically told us " they should of waited" I am disgusting in this company and my money went down the drain. Dont use this company if you care about your families safety. Go with an actual shuttle company that will do their job. read more

We used the free ride to travel from John's Pass and Boardwalk to Dockside Dave's on a Wednesday afternoon/early evening. The initial call went smoothly. Within 2 minutes I had a call back to schedule pickup. Soon the boldly decorated beach van pulled up and we were greeted by a chipper lady who seemed excited to meet us. She opened the door for us and confirmed our destination. In the short six minute ride we received a lot of local information, including an explanation of the free ride program and some tips for local eats and happenings. There was also much insight about using the free ride service beyond the beach area into what is called the main land, anything across a bridge. The van was clean and free of smoke. My bestie and I are here with our kids for a long weekend. We wanted to avoid the hassle of renting a car but knew we would need to get around here and there. The front desk suggested we try Free Beach Ride and OMG! What an awesome service! The drivers been prompt and courteous, the rides have cost us a little less than Uber or Lyft, & I MUCH prefer to support a local business! One driver in particular, Cheryl, REALLY went out of her way for us yesterday. First - she put up with our chatty kidlings on our way back from the aquarium (poor thing haha!) And then later when we just couldn't fathom taking them out to dinner (exhausted mommies) - I texted her and asked if she could pick up a takeout order for us and she DID! Made our night! This company is FANTASTIC!. I've coordinated a few beach bar crawls with Dave the owner and have added a few of his drivers into my phone. These guys are great! They're timely and very friendly. The vans are clean and comfortable with AC :) Tip them well as they work on tips and tips alone...It's obviously up to you, but don't tip less than $5 for any ride you take from them. I'm not sure why more communities don't partake in this! Free beach ride is just that - a free ride up and down the beach. I believe it goes from Pass-a-grille all the way to Clearwater. You call or submit an online request, and somebody responds shortly with a wait time. They have minivans, so they can bring up to 6 passengers at a time. They work on tips only. This is a genius idea. It was started by a local resident, and local businesses pay to advertise on the side of the vans. Five of us were able to go from my house (near the Don Cesar) to a bar on Treasure Island for a $10 tip and the driver showed up in less than 10 minutes both ways. Uber or Lyft would have been at least a 20 minute wait on a Friday night and a $35 ride in an SUV. The end result? We were all able to have a good time since one person didn't get stuck driving (or paying to park at Johns Pass), and we were able to stay a little longer at the bar (and spend more money) because we saved so much money on the ride there. It's a responsible and business savvy move for all the local spots! read more

Malcolm was always on time and knew where great food and music was! There was a couple of nights we told him to plan our evening and he didn't disappoint! FreeBeachRide claims to be just that but the reality is that the dispatchers (2 women I've spoken to) refuse to send a driver if it's 'just you'. Apparently they don't think enough people will tip and so they never show up. They say they will come to get you... 20 minutes pass, you call back, they say a driver is on his way. 40 mins pass, you call back. They say they'll call a driver. A hour passes, they say they called the wrong driver and he wasn't working today. The bottomline is they NEVER SHOW UP and lead you on endlessly with a total disregard for being honest, ethical or ever getting you to where you want to go. The ride is NOT free and should not be advertised as such because that is very misleading. I pretty much tip a dollar a mile. I think that is fair. $2-3 is my minimum even if I'm only going to the grocery store which is one mile from my house. The drivers always complain about not making enough money. Maybe if they picked up enough rides and drove rather than sat around waiting for the 'big money' they'd make more and wouldn't have so many people who would rather walk, take the trolley, call a cab or take Jimmie's Free Ride. The trolley is only $2 per trip, $4.50 for a day pass and comes every 20 minutes. They taxi can't really be much more than the FreeBeachRide expects to be paid. I haven't had any problems with Jimmies - although I've only recently started taking them - I've found them to be timely. I've only taken the taxi once and it was prompt and the driver was very nice. read more

i do think this is a great service to have and I'm not completely dissuaded not to use them again but the lady we had this morning was completely rude from the moment she picked us up until she dropped us off. We knew this was a tip only deal but ended up only having a few dollars. When I got out of the van, she yelled, "really girls, really? This is it?" While giving me a nasty look and laughing in my face. I'm sorry you chose to drive a taxi and work for tips but when you're in the customer service business where your salary is based on tips, I suggest being friendly.
