I came here because of the great yelp reviews and good price for a gel manicure. Unfortunately I can honestly say it was the worst manicure of my adult life. The nail tech may have been new or inexperienced but regardless my cuticles were cut so badly that 2 fingers were bleeding profusely and hurt to wash my hands even 2 days later. The color/gel is clumpy and now, only three days since, my middle finger is already chipped/cracked... They were all very nice and I didn't want to make a scene as it is a small, busy studio. Walked in to Free Edge Beauty Studio looking for a pedicure and was able to get started right away. The woman running the salon, Raven was super nice! There was an excellent selection of nail polish colors and the foot soaking stations were comfortable and cozy. Raven adjusted the water temp in my soak to be exactly what I needed, and added some lovely smelling salts to the water. She buffed and cleaned up my feet and toes like the pro that she is. After applying the nail polish and a top coat, I was led to a drying station right next to a cold water cooler with cups. Score! Great place for a pedicure, definitely check it out! read more

I saw Carmen for the signature foot treatment (basic pedicure) and Monique for a dip powder manicure with tips. The salon is small and cute, although it wasn't super clean. Carmen took her time on my toes, and I enjoyed my much needed pedicure. My manicure was mediocre-I found Monique pretty unfriendly. She was too rough when filing, which made my finger bleed. She didn't apologize or put ointment on. I read that with dip powder manicures, it is unsanitary to have customers dip their nails directly into the main jar of powder, but that is exactly what Monique did. The cleanup of my nails was subpar and when I questioned if Monique could fix something, I was told she wasn't finished yet.... and I didn't even get a hot towel, lotion, or hand massage. I was pretty uncomfortable and couldn't wait to leave. I also realize I may have been overcharged. Their website says the dip powder manicure with tips is $55 but I was charged $65 for it. Overall, it could have been worse, and my nails look nice enough, but I probably won't be back. read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and Free Edge has quickly become my go to nail salon. While it may be on a side street, don't side step this one! The salon has a clean, relaxing ambience and the co-owner always does a great job with my pedicures (I get the Look Book). They last longer than most places, she works hard at smoothing out my heels (which get so dry from wearing sandals) and most importantly, does a beautiful polish. I found this studio through yelp while shopping downtown Brooklyn. I checked their website and decided on the gel mani with pedicure . I had over 2.5 hours until my appointment . I got there 20 min early. I had a comfortable place to sit. I noticed that the studio is cozy but not overwhelmingly small. Smooth r&b music plays while I read magazines. There are powder blue chairs for pedicures and 4 nail stations. Let me say my pedicure was the most gentle but effective ever. I am ticklish but she scrubbed my feet and especially my heels where i needed the most work. I was so relaxed I could hardly feel her putting on the polish. The gel manicure was good. I appreciate nail techs who apply acetone and foil to soak the nail. Please do not pull out a drill on me to remove the old gel polish for that is not proper nail care. I went to this salon for a manicure, pedicure and wax over the holidays because of its good reviews on Yelp. When I entered, I thought it looked okay and had a wax. But after I sat down in the pedicure seat, I looked around and saw how dirty, dusty and poorly kept the room was. The chairs had peeling vinyl and didn't even lean back. Nail colors were very limited and the tub for my feet was stained and didn't move the water. But the worst experience was my manicure. The tools weren't sterilized and the file was definitely being reused. The manicurist cut my cuticles, causing some to bleed, and then used the same tool to cut the skin on top of my fingers. Why did she do that?! Later, I noticed my fingers really hurt and I could barely use them for the next week though I had to cook Christmas and New Years dinners. I even tried to cover my fingertips with bandaids but they didn't stay on. Though I do not usually give poor reviews, I don't want people to go here and have the same experience. read more

I wanted to try a new nail salon and free edge had some good reviews on yelp. I called them and was greeted by a young woman who wasn't the most inviting. I asked if they have availability for a gel mani and pedi, she said yes and that I should Come on over. I arrived at when I entered a young woman began to set up a pedicure station. When she was almost done she decided to acknowledge me and asked if I called in for a mani pedi. I said yes then she told me to choose my color. I chose fire Red as my color I sat in the pedicure chair and she began the service. At first it wasn't bad she asked if I wanted my nails filed or cut then she continued as normal - clean under nails, push back cuticle, buff nail bed, callous remover done. but after all that I noticed she didn't cut my cuticles and when I asked her if she was going to cut them she said yes but with an attitude (like I was bothering her). Also after removing the callous remover she used the foot grater and it cut my foot (no blood just surface) now we're in to painting the nails - so she's not the neatest so I asked her to remove the excess polish around the toe; she kept using this brush that spread the red versus taking it off so I'm explaining it to her (like she doesn't see it) and she keeps using the same brush it fix it and it keeps creating a bigger mess. I finally suggested removing the polish and redoing the toe she did but with frustration. When I was done I refused to have her do my nails so I said because of time constraints I'll just pay for the pedicure. So I go and dry my nails and while drying I take a phone call. In the middle of my call I hear someone say how would you like to settle your bill? Then the person says it again, it's the nail tech rudely interrupting my call...no excuse me, no manners so I settle the bill. She leaves before I finish drying and that's it. I was in disbelief! I explained to the nail salon manager what happened and she offered her apologies and 20% off a service but only if that girl isn't there. I wish I could tell you her name but she never face it to me she's a mess!!! I don't think it's the girl everyone is raving about, it CANT be. read more

They've played a couple of songs on my playlist, so I knew this was an awesome spot to try out. I had an appointment in March with Raven. She was very hospitable, sweet and friendly. She took her time answering my questions. I had the test shot mani/pedi combo with an additional add on of the callus remover. She did an excellent job on my pedicure and she did a great job with my manicure. I loved it and received numerous compliments on them. The appointment was very fast. I believe I spent no more than an hour and a half doing my nails. I was able to pay through 4square and tipped her 20%. She deserved every bit. You also receive a percentage off or a free service after your fifth visit I believe. You also receive 10% off with the referral of a friend. Take advantage of it all. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, your test shot mani and pedis are $25 instead of the standard $30. So you save about $5. I really like that. I do recommend this place for anyone who wants a fabulous mani/pedi! read more

This is the only nail salon I go to and they can gladly take my money. It's a small boutique- like shop so they operate mostly through an appointment based system. It's not like those dingy nail salons you'll find on every other street corner and that shows in the quality and care. They carry a great selection of nail polishes including some smaller brands. The ladies who work there are all friendly and they play good music! The only issue I have is that they don't always have drying drops or spray, which could cut down on the time I sit under the fan. Yayyyy. So I came back here to get my gel nails done and left incredibly happy! I came to my appointment a little early and was able to start ASAP. I had to get a gel nail polish removal. The last nail technician that did my gel nails put on a few coats, so it took a while to remove my polish and Free Edge did it perfectly. My nail technician was Jalina and she was nice and took her time doing my nails and paid attention to small details, which is something I appreciated, compared to the quick pace, minimal attention to detail work I've usually experienced at the other, more common nail salons in Brooklyn (hopefully that makes sense). I was also given two free designed nail with foil as the complimentary service that I was offered after my previous visit ended unsatisfactory. It meant a lot that that promise was followed through. Overall, the service was great. Everything was clean and the air inside was not stuffy. I was offered water. The owner was very nice and welcoming, as well as Jalina. The music was good and soothing, so much so that I started dozing off (I had a longgg day at work). For the service you receive, the price was well worth it honestly. It was a great experience. It's important to me to find and support black owned business (Shameless plug: as I do with Tribesofkin, check it out!) I think that I've finally found my nail salon place in Brooklyn. I love this nail salon! Black owned, great customer service, clean and affordable. The only things I would change are: the tools used: I feel like they weren't sanatized between customers (I could be wrong as I never got the chance to see if the tools were taken from the sanitizer). I wish my nail tech was a bit more talkative. I love being able to talk to the person doing my nails and be met with open friendly conversation. The nail tech next to us was laughing and talking with her customer and I thought to myself "Man I wish I had booked with her instead..next time I make an appointment (because yes I will be going back Carmen did an excellent job!) Horrible. Never again. I was so excited to try this place. I support black owned businesses as much as possible. I was literally excited to go here (I just moved to the neighborhood and was stokes about finding my new go to nail salon). Epic disappointment. I walked in on Saturday at 5. One employee was getting a pedicure & the other was in the back on her phone. I was the only customer. No one greeted me. I asked twice for a mani. They both looked at each other and one said: "you do it". I sat down and immediately noticed the place was messy. My technician stood up and her pants were falling down - literally I saw her underwear and pubes. No joke. Not trying to sound like an a** but is this how you present yourself at work? Everything was just sloppy. She seemed annoyed at having to do my nails. Everything she needed the spray to wipe my nails she kept squeezing down with one hand. So I got sprayed on my clothes and face repeatedly. The mani itself was rushed and done poorly. Uneven, didn't dry enough. A gel mani at that. It chipped off of every nail after 2 days. read more

Liked this place a lot, especially because I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and only had to wait a few minutes. It's clean, bright, well decorated and every employee I met greeted me warmly and professionally! (You can tell service is a big deal for them!) Monique did my mani and was extremely thorough in cleaning my nails up (they were pretty beat as I had just moved and been packing/taping/loading boxes for a week!). The polish job (gel) was a little messy (on my cuticles and fingertips) and unfortunately I didn't notice it til I left. I can't find anything negative to say about this place. Raven is one of the owners and her work is flawless, she offers tips to keep your nails healthy and is always patient with helping me pick a color for whatever I have going on (I'm very indecisive). Nya is the other owner, she's usually at the front desk and always welcoming with a warm smile. I walked in one time to get my brows done and they accommodated me immediately. The shop is also immaculate, I'm a bit of a germaphobe and I notice every corner, but everything is always very sanitary!
