Went into this store today on my way to get tea next door. I needed some wine and thought I would look around. Immediately regretted it as both of the people working here are quite rude. You basically need to give them a 100% guarantee that you will buy something or else they will make you feel bad for it. I came in, the first thing you see is the fridge, so I started looking at the wine inside. I was then instructed by the person at the register that I shouldn't look at the fridge, and he rudely asked "Can I help you?" in a tone that was more like 'why are you here' rather than helpful. I looked around, was looking for a smaller bottle of red wine at a reasonable price. Didn't find it and I started to make my way to the door. Then the other employee said that if I don't plan on buying something, I should just look online rather than come into the store. I get that everyone is on edge with Covid, but if you don't feel comfortable with customers coming in, CLOSE YOUR STORE. Only allow pickups. There is absolutely no reason to be rude to someone just because they didn't purchase anything. I live around the corner so it's a bummer that this place is a no-go for me. Literally never felt like such crap after leaving a wine store. Be nicer to your customers please, it's actually not hard at all. read more

My new favorite discovery on the ever-evolving Atlantic Ave. This is a very small space but they have a small but fantastic selection of wine and liquor. If you want a cheap bottle of Wild Turkey or an expensive bottle of Belvedere you probably won't find it here, but they seem to specialize on less well known but high quality and better priced (and often local - who knew there was so much gin distilled in Brooklyn) alternatives to typical top-shelf brands. read more

This is my new favorite wine shop in the city. I ran accross it while visiting a friend in the area and despite living in Manhattan, I will definitely be back. I have not been buying much wine in stores these days as I tend to find places like Union Square wines and other local shops a complete rip-off. It was really refreshing to see such a diverse selection despite being a relatively small shop. They have an extremely knowledgeable staff who are very helpful. Best of all, an incredible selection of wine (some of it well aged) under $30. As others have noted, it is not necessarily the place to buy a cheap bottle of whiskey (someone threw out Wild Turkey) or something that every other liquor store in the country sells, but it is worth a visit to find unique offerings. I'd recommend it mainly for the collection of well-aged bottles that you don't often find in wine stores. As an example 5-10 year old bottles of great Oregon pinot noir (perfect for drinking today) and at the same price or lower than the current releases is not something you see almost anywhere, but they have it here. read more

This place is so solid. They could sell airplane bottles and lottery tickets, but instead they carry only the best possible products. And that doesn't even mean that they aren't affordable - it just means their stock is carefully curated and thoughtful. It does also mean they have amazing stuff that's hard to get anywhere else. Their knowledge of wines is a major benefit. I know nothing, but I always get the best advice from them, and compliments from friends on my (their) choice of wines to bring to a dinner party. I have to admit that I was a bit of a skeptic about this whole organic wine thing. But I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a sulfite allergy, and both deli meats and wine are the main culprits. So I haven't indulged in almost a decade. But I was going to meet the girlfriend's parents and because it was Passover, wine was the only alcohol option. I didn't get the name of the dude helping me in the store, but he was so cool and full of information. He steered me towards a few reasonably priced red wines that had minimal sulfites. I had trouble trusting in this whole process, but the wine was a hit. Everyone enjoyed it, and I didn't wind up in the hospital. Also, I realized how much I've missed drinking wine. I'll definitely be back for more! read more

Great selection of reasonably priced wines under $30; I haven't bought one bottle that I didn't like. My summer favorites are the Shabang White and Grele Rose. They also stock my "must have on hand" Eagle Rare bourbon. Being a Pinot Noir girl, I'm partial to the slightly more expensive hand picked gems from Oregon. read more

Friendly and HIGHLY knowledgable proprietor who is anything but pretentious. The best way to describe the stock may well-curated, I popped in during bustling evening rush hour and heard him flavor match not only meals but atmosphere. There's something for all palates at all price points, I'm a steady customer and am never disappointed. There also seems to be regular, no-pressure tastings through which I've discovered wine and liquors I would have otherwise not considered. I stepped in this place when I saw The Pogues Irish Whiskey in their window display. The guy behind the counter was very enthusiastic about irish whiskies and we had a great conversation. This is a completely different experience than I've had at other liquor stores nearby (especially on Flatbush Ave) where the employees are apathetic or completely unhelpful. Here is a place I want to support! My wife bought two bottles of liquor from here later on Sat. during a bourbon tasting. I'm looking forward to coming back this weekend! read more

I need to write this review today after I was totally not welcomed to the store and left without buying what I chose. I understand they had a pick up only protocol (which I totally forgot about) but they decided to open an exception to me if I knew what I wanted. While I was trying to make my decision and read the names of the wines from far away (and this took about 2-3 minutes) they kept pressuring me and making me uncomfortable to the point that I just exploded. Why did I explode? Because this is NOT the first time I was treated this way in that store. Unfortunately I NEVER FELT WELCOMED there for many years. I kept patronizing them because of the convenience next to my apt and the quality of their wines. The owner was ALWAYS kind of rude and trying to rush me. The workers were ALWAYS tense like they were being watched by the owner in every move or word they said. I shared these feelings many times with my husband who never felt this way and on the contrary said the owner liked to talk about the wines with him. Being a non-white immigrant woman it was clear that I was being treated differently than my husband who is a white American. Also, having smelled alcohol on the owner's breath in the past, I even wondered if that aggressive on the edge atitude came from his alcohol use during his work hours. read more

It's obvious the owner (Jack) of Free Range Wine & Spirits is a wine lover. I was lucky enough to sneak in just before closing shortly after they opened. I was immediately impressed by the badass/non-obvious selection AND the owner's patience in helping each customer fine tune their selection. Not only did I taste a few spectacular wines in the store but I left feeling like I learned something in the process. Who takes the time to do that these days?? No one! This place is a rare gem. Every bottle I've purchased has been pretty good -- not amazing, but solid table wine (and no bad bottles). Happened to peep in the window while walking by and saw they carried so many of the Japanese whiskies which are so hard to find these days. They do free tastings on Saturdays of some really unique spirits. Wine and spirit selections may seem smaller than bigger superstores but they're just more selective which means they carry a lot of the good stuff - no 2 buck chuck here. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They have a fridge for those that need something already chilled. Go there if you're looking for a hard to find brand. read more

this place does a really good job. you can tell when you walk into this place how much the person running it cares. there is a small but well curated collection of wine and spirits. every btl in this place has a story and if you ask the owner is happy to tell it to you. even if you live closer to another store this place is worth the walk.
