Love. When in Park Slope make sure to visit the Cellar. A very well curated selection of spirits with a welcome variety in prices. The staff is always helpful, and will ask questions to narrow choices and make selections. The store itself feels homey but not crowded -- Quite digestible without feeling overwhelming. It has the feeling of a small town liquor store run by people who really know their wine and whiskey (they also seem to know their tequila, rye, and bourbon, but that was not very alliterative). I always make sure to stop in whenever I'm visiting my brother and his family, I always find a great bottle to bring as a gift (often buy something else for myself that I haven't seen in other places). read more

Not going to lie. I was stopped in my tracks by the retro looking vertical LIQUORS sign out front. And then like siren beckoning, the giant octopus sculpture in the window lured me in to buy some booze. They have a great selection, but I couldn't tell you how anything is organized. In fact, I asked the staff, and he just asked me what I wanted and pointed me in the direction of the Austrian wines. Pretty good selection, including one of my favorites Christina. Also a very good whiskey and amaro selection. They won't have everything, but they'll have a good showing of every type, at least. Picked up a bottle of Fort Hamilton Rye. All reasonably priced. I will say to remember to bring a bag, because their paper bags are kind of flimsy, and I spent the whole walk home worried I was going to drop my booze. read more

This is probably my favorite place to buy booze in the city. It's not as huge as some stores, so the selection isn't as comprehensive as a place like Astor. However, if you don't know what you want, there's no better spot to be in. Everything they stock is of great quality, and the selection easily navigable. Most importantly, the staff rocks. They don't just help; talking to them is like shooting the shit with a buddy about which scotch he likes best, rather than trying to gauge whether or not he's just steering you towards the more expensive bottle. Speaking of, the prices are prominently displayed, which is probably a function of them being completely reasonable. I can't stand it when you have no idea what a bottle costs until you get up to the counter and then you have to awkwardly admit that you can't afford to pay their ridiculous markup because you bought a absurdly expensive sword while under the influence of illicit substances, and your girlfriend is never going to let you hear the end of it. I live around the corner and when I go there, I can't help but feel like they hire people that act like they're more knowledgeable than you about the alcohol you're about to buy.. Example, I just had an absolute vodka drink in my house and I wanted another I ran out but they don't carry it for what reason? Sure, you probably have to take any review of a liquor store with a grain of salt--I mean, they ply you with nothing but alcohol, how bad could one be--but Slope Cellars is really quite stellar. Moderately-sized store that is very comfortable to wander with an excellent, reasonably-priced selection. The staff is helpful but unobtrusive--happy to help or just let you browse--but I strongly recommend letting them recommend. First off, they've changed my life by introducing me to the amazing Coole Swan Irish Cream liqueur ("Better than Bailey's?" I scoffed at first--but oh my). And with Password-like accuracy, just one or two taste hints have led to perfect wine suggestions both for myself or when shopping for guests. They've introduced me to a couple of amazing reds and dry rieslings, and the sweet white wine they suggested for guests was....less disgusting that sweet whites typically are in my opinion--but my mom and Aunt were delighted, so...job done. Nice selection of wine and liquor. Comfortable space to browse. Friendly, helpful staff happy to chat and share thoughts and opinions. And did I already mention booze? They have a great selection of natural wines which I find very helpful because I just started learning about these. We have gotten wines here that we haven't been able to find in other stores. A friendly helpful staff that are willing to guide you in the right direction, and are very open to feedback on any wines we have purchased before. There's a great rewards program where you can end up getting amazing $1 bottles of wine - ask them about it if you live locally. There's one woman who works there who's AWESOME. She used to be a teacher and taught me a lot one afternoon when I shared I didn't like Chardonnay. After describing why I didn't like the ones I had tried, and the one time I tried a Chardonnay I did like, She gave me some suggestions of how to navigate Chardonnay's in the future and suggestions of ones I would like. It was SO helpful to me. Also she created a code system so you know which wines are organic, biodynamic, and skin contact which is helpful. I've definitely spent more money here then I have at any other wine store because of how passionate and well informed their staff is about wine. read more

It is important to keep people safe during Covid but the women who worked behind the counter was beyond rude. She yelled "wait outside so another paying customer can come in". Even though my husband and I were the only ones in the store and clearly buying, I walked outside to wait in the pouring rain. A customer approaching the store witnessed the whole thing and felt incredibly awkward, He even apologized. There is a liquor/wine store right under my apartment. I don't go to that one. I walk two extra avenues to go to Slope Cellars. My reasoning behind this is simple--they know their stuff, they love it, and they are experts. I am never disappointed when I walk in here, I know I'll find a bottle that is perfect for exactly what I'm looking for. The owners here take pride in the fact that they hand pick their liquors and wines and will happily share the story of each one. Ones that are locally-sourced and made with organic ingredients are even denoted with star stickers for those of you who are trying to drink "healthier" (whatever that means). It's almost overwhelming for someone like me--aka someone who is used to picking a bottle based on how pretty the label is. I make occasional trips to visit a friend in Park Slope, and I always stop in to Slope Cellars to make a purchase. I am happy to report that Peter of Garnet Wines is an associate here. The store is small, it has some very good wines, and their prices are fair. Parking in this part of Park Slope is not difficult either. I've been known to sip a glass of wine every once in awhile. When I do need that perfect bottle, I usually find myself on 7th in Park Slope at Slope Cellars. They offer a great wine selection with a friendly and informative staff. For people that do not know enough about wine, but want to try some and not break the piggy bank, Slope Cellars sells a variety of wines under $10.They also offer wine tastings (two weekends a month), which is another way to find that perfect bottle of wine before purchasing it. Their back room doubles as an art gallery and they even donate space to up and coming artists to show off their work. They are open seven days a week and of course since they are located in Park Slope are stroller friendly. After shuffling around baby carriages in this shop, you may need some booze to calm your nerves. read more

I really cannot say enough about this gem of a wine store. The staff could not be more helpful or more knowledgeable and they have a fantastic selection. Let's see... they've made me look good by putting together a fabulous case of select Chateauneuf du Pape and Barolo for client gifts for the holidays. When I first entered the Yelp Inaugural Ball on Tuesday, I flapped off the cold and proceeded to go bar hunting. This is a Yelp event, right? Naturally the bar would be close to the entrance. Once I arrived downstairs, I got offered a choice: the open bar to the left or the room of independent liqueurs to the right. Screw that schamncy crap, send me to the vodka. Well, turns out the bar was packed, so it was back to the liqueurs if I wanted anything to drink while the getting was good. And what did I find at this holy room of creme goodness? Two of my new favorite drinks: Coole Swan organic white chocolate liqueur (which is the equivalent of drinking a Hershey bar without the goop and with alcohol) and Castries Peanut Rum liqueur (which, when mixed with Vodka, makes an orgasm-inducing** peanut butter martini). I proceeded to tell every person I knew about these drinks and the hosts were so enthralled with my passion that they didn't call the cops when I came back for my 8th serving. I don't know if you had it, but it's fantastic. So what does this have to do with my review today? Well, when I asked them both where I could buy this liquid goodness near my South Slope apartment, neither hesitated: Slope Cellars. I've been to SC a few times for wine as I trudged up the hill to my friends' apartment* and needed to bring a gift. It's primarily a wine shop (they'll often do tastings to introduce you to new wines you weren't sure you liked) and the service is outstanding (these guys really know they're stuff). Prices are color coded by $10 range so it's easy to figure out exactly how much you're spending if you're out for a refill and for the price of your email address you can join their wine club which gets you a bottle of wine for $.99 within the average that you've already purchased. I'd come here more often if it were closer to my house but having independent liqueur brands as delicious as Coole Swan and Castries gets this five stars in my book. They also have regular liquors and liqueurs but wine's they're focus. * - I can walk for miles on flat ground, but I hate walking up hills. If they were true friends, they would have moved into an apartment closer to my place. ** - I actually spilled some on my pants so that's why I had to go to the bathroom to clean it up. Yep. Slope Cellars rocks for about a million reasons. Here are several: 1. Located right next to GRAB, the greatest specialty food store of all time. 2. Cheap & tasty section with legitimately delish wines. 3. Knowledgeable, friendly staff who care about their product & customers. 4. When a bottle I purchased was funky, I brought it back and they switched it out, absolutely no problem. 5. Discount card. 13th bottle purchased = $0.99. Bottles available based on average cost of the 12 bottles previously purchased* 6. There's a cute, friendly old dog who lounges around. 7. Wide selection without all the fluff of larger wine shops. * I purchased about 20 bottles of wine before anyone told me about the card, and I only found out about it because I said "ya'll should have a frequent buyer card." I was a bit miffed that I had to ask for the card and I get annoyed every time the cashier on duty doesn't ask me for my card, since I forget it occasionally and it'd be nice to think they have my back. Additionally, my boyfriend buys wine from here a couple times a week and no one has EVER told him about the card, and he's too forgetful to ask about it. Had someone been cool enough to tell him about it, we probably would have filled and redeemed several cards by now. I'm just sayin' -- if you want to offer a boon to loyal customers, do it. I have loved this wine shop so much since my first visit a couple of years ago, that I haven't bothered to check out the competition down the street. Who needs to when this small shop is full of a myriad of wines and salespeople that know their stuff and will help even a thrifty boozer like myself pick out a great bottle under $15. I came across a bottle that become one of my favorite whites here (Olivier, a scrumptious Hungarian wine worth seeking out). I also discovered, during a tasting, a Pinot Grigio that comes in a liter box and is under $10, but I swear is so good (it's the only wine I have ever bought an entire case of). I don't remember the name of it, but I've got some chilling in my fridge as I type this. On top of the nice 'n' knowledgable staff, Slope Cellars also offers a Wine Club card that gets you a free bottle with a certain number of stamps, across different price points. It's a nice added incentive, but I'd stay loyal to this shop even without the card. Mm, all this writing about wines makes me wish I had a glass right now! read more

An ideal wine store with fantastic service. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, with no snobbishness or rudeness. Every time I've come in, someone has asked if they could help me, and every time they've recommended something that turned out to be just right for the occasion...and often at a lower price than I'd been willing to pay. Oh, and when I bought a bottle as a present, they gift-wrapped it for free, too. I agree with the previous reviews about the good wine selection and helpful staff. It's also great for premium selection of other bevs. What it lacks, however, is non-premium booze. Cheap, bigger volume options for mixed drinks/mashups where the premium selections would be insulted as they get lost in blends with colas, tonics, tomato sauces, jello, jungle juices, etc. Sometimes you want to savor a craft bourbon, but sometimes you want a whiskey and coke (or something similar). read more

I had a great day at work and had a driving test earlier in the day, which I passed without making a single mistake. It was a day to celebrate, and I wanted to buy a bottle of wine and drink it with my husband. But stopping by Slope cellars made it a sour experience. The least you can expect from a business is a welcoming attitude toward your clients. But being condescending toward your guest, disrespecting them by cutting them short in every sentence, smirking at every inquiry they make, not trying to understand what they are looking for, and making them feel silly for asking the questions that they ask (and must as customers), is a sure shot way to lose your client forever. I think sometimes people have a way of appearing to be polite on the surface, but being downright nasty and arrogant between the lines. That's how the staff here is. I am no expert on wine, and my husband and I were just asking around for advice to make our choice. But the way we were treated was something we will not forget. It was a gentle way of asking us to simply leave. The staff at south cellar might be knowledgeable, but they should understand that people want to buy that bottle of wine to have a great experience. What's the point of insulting their intelligence? What's the point of making them uncomfortable to the point that they can't articulate what they are looking for? The least you can expect from a business is basic manners and respect for your customers. Otherwise why are you serving them? The bottles we purchased are still lying in our car's trunk and we will certainly give them away. Even the thought of returning them wasn't welcome. No point going back to that store for another episode. Seriously sir, is that what you are in business for? We weren't surprised to read reviews where many other people, many from marginalized communities, felt violated. Speaks volumes about the people behind your business. Almost the moment I walked into the room, I was greeted warmly and offered suggestions. They did not have what I was looking for specifically, but they had such a wide variety that I soon had a new choice! Enjoying it now at home. All you really need to know is that they have a selection of "Cheap and Tasty" wines that changes regularly. And they are all cheap and tasty. The shop is quite cozy and you know from the moment you walk in that it is all about the wine. It's organized quite nicely making it easy to find what you are looking for. As others have said, the staff is generally very knowledgeable and all of them are friendly and helpful. If Patty or John are there, definitely take their recommendations. I am lucky enough to live around the corner from Slope Cellars, but all my friends who live in Park Slope travel to come here, and if I lived blocks away, I would too! This store is a pleasure to shop in, everything is easy to find, the staff is super nice and helpful and they don't even blink if you price range tends to be in the $10 range. If you purchase 12 bottles you're 13th is a dollar. Yup, one American dollar! I can always find what I'm looking for, after a recent trip to Argentina I was surprised to see they stocked some of the great varietals we were drinking.... I shouldn't have been! As an added bonus, they always play great music, from punk/country to acid jazz, which makes me happy. BTW, the owners are fantastic people, which definitely filters down to the staff. We had a fancy BYOB dinner to go to and brought Patty (one of the husband/wife owners) the menu beforehand to pair. She picked an amazing selection of half bottles that turned an mediocre meal into a sublime experience.
