It's temporarily closed until August 2026, which probably means January 2028, so it might come to pass that an entire class may matriculate through UC Berkeley without ever experiencing the brutalist wonder that is Free Speech Movement Café, aka Free Speech Café, aka Free Speech. Nothing reminds me more of working as a kind of TA at UC Berkeley from 2005 through 2013, off and on, than Free Speech Café. It's where I usually met with a certain professor to discuss work, which naturally turned to politics, literature, creative writing, ethics, and philosophy. He's quite a guy, my old boss. I spent so many hours reading The Nation here, back when it was worth spending hours reading The Nation. I believe I was sitting in Free Speech's lovely terrace on a sunny day when I first read about Wikileaks or one of its releases of classified material. The food has always been disappointing. I don't know why. It has never been bad, but I think I've had one satisfying sandwich from here. Eventually, I started eschewing eating here altogether before settling on bagels when they hadn't run out, and they had usually run out, because our meetings were almost always in the afternoon. How can I give four stars to cafe with mediocre food? Because I can, and because my fond, fraught memories are worth more than three stars, and because while I've met with lots of people in probably two dozen locations on and all around Berkeley's campus to discuss grades, assignments, writer's block, merciless editing, and more with students, coworkers, colleagues, and would-be recruiters/organizers, Free Speech Café always stands out as an almost archetypal informal academic meeting place. I hope it returns. I know it won't feel the same. Hopefully, I won't have to experience it if it's not the same or worse. I'm assuming worse, which is why I may stay away, but don't let that keep you away. Hot chocolate for the win, but only when it's cold out on the brutalist terrace. read more

Even though I pass by FSM all the time, it wasn't until my coworkers and I needed a closer lunch spot to celebrate a birthday so we could get to our 1 pm meetings on time. We walked in and I immediately decided on the Chinese Chicken Salad ($8.25). I was given my receipt with a number. As another coworker and I grabbed everyone's receipts, the rest went to the outside patio to grab two tables. We waited about 5-8 minutes for the food. When my salad order came up, it was packaged in a to go bowl already. The sauce was already mixed into the salad and it could have used a bit more to fully reach all of the salad. There was an adequate amount of chicken but I did like the amount of carrots and celery that was put in to make it a bit crunchier and less garden salad. The garden salad portion was fresh; no wilting or brown pieces. If I was in a hurry and wanted to stay close, I'd stop by again. Also heard great things about the quesadilla. After 10pm, finding a seat inside is close to impossible, but you'll be likely to find a seat outside on the patio. Professors often hold office hours at FSM, so if you see a large group of people staring at someone and nodding blankly, that's what it is. Also, The line is almost always has 10+ people, but do not fear, the line goes by really fast. The cashiers are very efficient. Oh my goodness, FSM is sooooo good! I actually haven't tried FSM until this year. I thought it would be like just one of those mediocre on campus eateries (sorry GBC). I absolutely love their food! It just tastes so good. My favorite thing to get their is the turkey & avocado panini. The ratio is bread to filling is so good and they're super generous with the filling. They have turkey slices, avocado, melted cheese, and sliced tomato. When you get it, it's really hot, smells delicious, and warms your soul when you take the first bite. MMMMMMmmmMMMMmmmm There's seating inside with a lot of interesting decor. There's also a ton of seating outside to enjoy your meal! I like how FSM is open really late and how it's right next to the library, so it's super convenient for students studying :) It also opens until pretty late so you can get coffee for your late night studying (though the kitchen closes earlier)!! read more

It's been ages since I've stopped in here -- it was a favorite of mine during my time as a Cal student but was really hard to find an empty table during crunch time, and many of the reviews I've read show that hasn't changed. Lucky me that I'm here on a Saturday morning and easily found a table to enjoy my decaf latte and blueberry muffin. Both are excellent, which for me means no bitter edge on the espresso and the muffin isn't overly sweet or gummy from being underbaked. Wish I had occasion to come by more often. read more

BEST food to sneak down into main stacks! I always come to FSM when I'm studying or at the library. It's perfectly situated at the front of Moffit library (perfect for study breaks). The line is always either short, non-existent or quickly moving! I'm usually not a big fan of pre-maid wraps and coffee shop kind of crap, but everything I've tried at FSM Cafe is really delicious. Also, the prices aren't bad. Not even for Berkeley standards; they're actually just generally pretty inexpensive. If you've got a hankering for a good panini, COME HERE! Awesome location for students and love that their hours closely align with those of Moffit! On Mon-Thurs, they don't close till 2AM. So I'm not a much of a coffee connoisseur or anything - usually I'll take my coffee with lots of milk and sugar - but lately I've been enjoying my coffee black (large is ~$2), so I just get their house coffee and every time I go, I would say the taste is the same, so A+ on consistency! The coffee prices are relatively the same as other coffee shops in the area, though maybe a tiny bit smaller on the cup size. The question is not why I'm giving FSM 4 stars, but who can go to Berkeley and NOT give FSM at least 4 stars. It's usually noisy, the tables are not always clean, some futons have the stuffing coming out, only the seats on the periphery have outlets, baked goods/sandwiches/wraps are pre-made and not fresh, the made-to-order food is over-priced, the patio has uncomfortable bolted chairs under a glaring sun or pouring rain, the line sometimes wraps around the corner into the library next door, there are always people smoking in front, and the bathrooms are disgusting. During dead week and finals week, it's a chaotic pigsty of panicking, hypercaffeinated undergrads staring at laptops with glazed eyes. Some people appear to be in Facebook coma, spending more time reading their mini-feed than reviewing lecture notes. The true FSM'ers at heart are those who live there for a few days on end to write that research paper they've been procrastinating on, sipping coffee in desperation at 2am. During these 2 weeks, if you're lucky you might find half a table to share with a stranger. Why 4 stars then?!?! Because it is indispensable to Berkeley student life: non-expensive and organic fair-trade coffee, edible food, ESPRESSO BROWNIES, tables and walls of newspaper front pages reminding us of Berkeley's rich history of activism, the front page of every major newspaper around the world updated daily right outside the cafe, amazing hours that are godsend to college students but absurd to normal people, located right at the heart of campus. As a freshman student on campus, I had heard that Free Speech Movement Cafe was literally the best food on campus. Having been there quite a few times throughout the years and seeing the quality suffer, I'd have to disagree with that statement. As another shop by the owner of Caffe Strada, I would have to agree that the food is overall better, though different, than that of Fifo, for example. I would still say Zeb edges out by a bit. Where FSM really disappoints is the coffee. You would expect Strada quality coffee, but somewhere in the implementation, even with the same menu, FSM really falls short. It seems as if the coffee has been getting worse throughout the years, and it just hasn't been as good as it has been recently. Coupled with the $5 credit card minimum, I really find little reason to come here if all I am looking for is a quick snack. Plus, seats just aren't available. With where I am on campus nowadays, FSM really isn't worth checking out. TIP: Espresso brownies are so good! But can be found at other Strada owned joints. read more

This is my go-to place for an iced white mocha, italian soda, or just to study. It's almost impossible to find a seat indoors, but it's just as fulfilling to sit outside on a nice, sunny day with the squirrels. The best tables to snag are the ones along the walls for an outlet. There's also outlets outside along the walls, but your charger might not be long enough to reach the table. This is the spot for students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Some professors and GSIs have office hours here, while others come here for a much-needed coffee fix before or after dealing with all these die-hard Berkeley kids. With everybody hustlin' and bustlin' before and after class, the lines tend to get long on the hour. FSM has some of the best food and coffee on campus, but for some reason, I almost always get a stomachache every time I eat or drink something from here and end up having to drop a nuclear bomb somewhere on campus. Despite that, I love the salads, sandwiches, and desserts here! My personal favorites are the iced white mocha and espresso brownie. They have their fluctuating ups and downs, but I tend to manage for the most part. Some reasons I love studying here: I can slap my music and talk as loud as I want and nobody could complain; I can have food and coffee while I study; the well-distributed bright lighting; the sound of people talking and forks clinking onto plates; the fast Wi-Fi connection with AirBears. Day and night, FSM is the perfect study environment for me! Just some other things to consider, but y'all already know it's smoke central out front. Don't secondhand and hold your breath when you walk through that cloud of cancer. Your lungs deserve better. FSM is my HOLY GRAIL As a college student who lives off campus, FSM is the perfect place to recharge and grab a bite. I love FSM's hot paninis, especially the "Pepperoni Pizza" Panino!! It has the classic pepperoni pizza taste/ingredients I love, but is a lot lighter and SO DELICIOUS!! I'm not the biggest coffee drinker, so instead, I got their espresso brownie. I love this cafe for it's spacious outdoor seating (plus outdoor outlets!) and cheap coffee. It's my go-to study spot on nice days that I want to spend outside but can't because I have to study like a good Cal student. So I make the best of both worlds and study outside under the comfort of the awnings. The only downside, though, is that the place is usually PACKED with students. It's difficult to find a good seat unless you're hounding like a vulture and swoop in as soon as you see someone starting to pack up. There's this girl who works at the register who either doesn't enjoy her job too much or doesn't care about the customers at all. She speaks in a very robotic way when she talks to you and tells you your total before taking your money and sending you on your way. I understand that it gets busy and you can get tired, but at least try to smile and make the customer feel welcome for buying something. I remember my first day of freshman year when I had no idea what the "free speech movement cafe" was and it took me 15 minutes to find the place--little did I know I would end up spending countless hours here studying! (to be honest I've probably spent more time talking that studying here though...) Overall, this place is amazing for catching up with friends, studying (if you're okay with a slightly noisy environment), and coffee chats. The location is central and convenient. Timings: During my senior year, I used to come here at 6:30am (as you can guess, it's super easy to find a seat at this hour), and the workers would be ready to take your order. Obviously, the place gets more crowded as the day goes on, but I've found that if you're here before 10am, you'll probably get a seat inside. Also, if you come here within 10 minutes of the hour (or 1.5 hours on Tuesday/Thursday), you can easily hover and grab someone's seat. But, you'll probably end up sharing with someone, especially if you have a coveted outlet seat. Also, come here early on Saturdays--FSM usually has a really relaxed vibe for studying. Coffee: Pretty average. I usually just get their regular coffee, and while it gets the job done, it's nothing to write home about. In my opinion, the sweeter drinks like the mochas and caramel lattes are too sweet, but I have a pretty low sweet threshold for coffee so keep that in mind. Food: Again, it's ok. This place is super convenient, and they serve standard food, like sandwiches and soups, but the portions can be small in comparison to the price. They're pretty chill if you bring outside food in, so don't be afraid to bring food from other places. Not a good place to study because it's pretty much always crowded, especially if you come during the middle of the day (but you will find a seat if you come in the morning! still pretty empty at 9:30 AM) Typical cafe food like sandwiches and salads, but the quesadillas are really yummy (because cheese and sauce and unhealthy stuff...). I actually really like their deli wraps, like the turkey and mango wrap! They're around 6 dollars, so it's not really worth it for the size they come in, but definitely a good hunger fix if you're on the go. They have really large drink sizes, or at least the smallest size lattes come in will be 16 oz. Not a fan of the fact that they charge 65 cents extra for milk substitutes...which is basically like capitalizing on people's allergies or lactose intolerant situations. Service is pretty good! The only downside would be that it's always pretty crowded with people since it's in Moffit library. The service is always an A++. FSM is such a nice chill out spot and the good food just keeps me coming back. read more

Solid place, nice employees - I usually get the avocado turkey hot sandwich, a pastry, and a latte when I know I'm going to be studying in Moffit all day. This usually lasts me from breakfast to dinner since I tend not to eat a lot when I'm trying to focus/study. The sandwich is delicious - perfect amount of avocado and the cheese is perfectly melted! Pastries are fine - nothing special, nothing terrible. Just a good snack when you're trying to study and motivate yourself! Latte is really smooth - not too bitter and doesn't taste burnt (ahem Peets). read more
