Coffee spots are sure different nowadays, at least compared to my ancient Cal undergrad days. They used to be converted storage closets, and the usually burnt coffee was served in styrofoam cups with folded handles. There would be canisters of CoffeeMate and certainly no sugar-free sweeteners. However, much like their space on Oxford, this spot was truly a cafe. It featured a complete breakfast and lunch menu as well as the expected slate of coffees and coffee alternatives. The key difference was that it appeared set up like a study hall. Shhh... It was very quiet with earbuds epoxied on young students intently staring at their laptop screens. Cute cafe with great study vibes and decent food. I tried the Tuna Melt Panini for the first time. I really enjoyed it. The tuna wasn't overly salty, the bread was crispy and warm, and the tomato and avocado were fresh as well. I'd say price was pretty normal, maybe a little pricier. Great menu selection with coffees, smoothies, sandwiches, salads, and pastries. But goodness, it took me 33 minutes to get a panini during lunch. I understand they are understaffed and it's the lunch rush but it didn't make sense seeing the lady prioritize cold sandwiches first. The people way ahead of me we're also waiting and longer because she made the panini in batches. Service is nice and workers are friendly. Coffee is decent but $6 is kinda alarming. Plenty of seating even during rushes. Would I recommend, no not at all but this is one of the few places to get coffee on campus so by default I'll return. $20.85 for a panini and iced coffee says it all. I'm a big fan of this Yali's. The location is huge, great menu selection (admittedly a bit pricey), kind employees, A1 pumpkin bread. It's a bit loud, so I don't recommend it if you have some serious work to get done / no noise-cancelling headphones. Loads of seating indoors and outdoors. I arrived on the first day of class to take my online lecture on campus and Yali's was an ideal study spot in the morning. The cafe was largely empty at 10am and the service was fast. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and veggies (spinach, onion, tomato, maybe one more?) and it was great. The cream cheese and fresh veggies were an unexpectedly delicious combo and I plan to come back for the rest of the menu. The cafe started getting full around 11am and in the afternoon it was packed with absolutely no seating given one group per table and some attempt at social distancing. I highly recommend checking out Yali's in the morning, ideally before 11am, because of how crowded it gets in the afternoon. If you're ever on Northside, Yali's is probably one of the best places to study in the area. It's newly renovated and has great lighting. I've tried the food and coffee here, and it's nothing special and also a bit more expensive than similar coffee shops and cafes around campus. Starting off with some positives, the service is great. The cashiers are straight to the point and nice. The baristas are efficient at pushing out drinks in a timely manner. In addition, this cafe is a great place to study on Northside. There are usually seats open but may be a little more busy around lunchtime. However there are benches outside too. Now with some negatives. The previous two times I went I got a Chai Latte with Soy. There's a surcharge for non dairy milk but the option is nice. Both times the drinks were extremely watery, making the taste seem slightly acidic. Today I decided to get a soy latte to see if their other drinks are good. They serve Equator coffee which is one of my favorites in the Bay. At Equator locations I can get coffee without sugar and tastes smooth but never bitter. Here, my Latte was extremely bitter. I had to use sugar. In addition my Latte was 1/4-1/3 foam. I didn't expect so little coffee. Overall this place is good for studying but I haven't tried any good drinks yet. read more

Because I was on my way to a workout, I ordered no food. However, I do want to point out that this new Yali's carries Firebrand pastries as well as pastries from Semifreddi's. The coffee is from Equator. I had a small cappuccino "for here" (i.e., in a ceramic cup). It was perfectly made. As you can see from the photos on Instagram (and I'll add two for this review), the space has been remodeled beautifully. The personnel today included members of the Yali's A-team. So I'm at the soft grand opening for Yalis. First impression, the lines aren't that long, especially compared to the lines at the Oxford St and Stanley Hall Yalis. Upon walking in, the atmosphere was lively and the café itself was spacy, casual, and contemporary. Their Spotify music choice was a bit interesting for cafe and was mainly chillwave and electric indie. Very hipster vibe. The baristas working were also very friendly and efficient for their first day on the job. As it was my first time ordering from Yali's, they recommended I get the tomato mozzarella sandwich or the fra'mami sandwich. I ultimately chose the fra'mami sandwich along with Firebrand's chocolate chip cookie and a small milky way hot drink. Also, this is the only Yalis that accept both Debit, credit, Cal1Debit and cash. The Fra'mami sandwich consisted of cold cut salami and pickles w/ mayo & swiss on foccaia bread. I think all of their sandwiches are cold cut even the "grilled sandwiches". The Fra'mami was heart and appetizing and the acidity of the pickles really balanced the salami and cheese but for the price I'd choose a bagel. The hot Milky Way and chocolate chip cookie both tasted really smooth and dark, albeit both were a little too rich. The half of the milky way was cream fat and the cookie also weighed me down with its fattiness. I did appreciate the much needed sea salt flakes on the cookie which balanced out the sweetness and enhanced the flavors. Overall Yalis was a pretty casual location for occasional eats. Although items' prices range on the higher side the food here is pretty decent and the café itself allows for a great place to study and snack on the Northside of campus. read more

I have had many fond memories with Qualcomm. As a freshman, their wraps really were the bomb, and they were the one place where I could use my meal points and not feel like I was getting garbage (besides Late Night). Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. But before I get to that, I'll comment on Qualcomm as a whole. What is Qualcomm? A tech company? Yeah, but it's also the name of a cafe at UC Berkeley. With modern designs, plenty of seatings (though limited outlets), and engineers everywhere, it's the place that's poppin' up in Northside that really isn't all that poppin'. I remember the days where I would look forward to having class in Evans or Soda just to get the chance to grab a quick wrap at Qualcomm. Its popularity was unparalleled. Even now, you will still see crazy lines on the hour, and that's only a testament to its popularity. Now, it's not even worth it. With The Den and even GBC offering wraps and Qualcomm cutting down on the aiolis, Qualcomm no longer has the differentiating factor it once had. Couple that with the fact that the lines are long and the location is inconvenient and what you get is just an experience that is not at all worth it. For the past two times I have come here, I have gotten very unsatisfactory coffee, very likely not up to the standards of a normal Peet's. There really needs to be regulation, since it does no justice to the brand name. Qualcomm was once the crowning jewel of Cal Dining, but nowadays, just head to Hearst and Euclid: you'll find way better food in the area. TIP: Go to GBC. read more

I really love Qualcomm. I go at least three times a week since I have a ton of meal points. They have great vegan and vegetarian options.I would definitely recommend the sun-dried tomato sauce to put on your wrap. The flavor is really fresh and delicious! If you go before 10:30, you can get the breakfast wrap (almost like a breakfast crepe but with a wrap on the outside instead of a pancake) or the deluxe wrap (tomatoes, onions, cheese, bacon, avocado and cucumbers). Any time after 10:30, you can get a veggie wrap or some sort of meat wrap. With the veggie wraps, I recommend asking for "everything" then if you see something you DONT want in your wrap just add "except ___, ___, and ____". asking for everything will guarantee a HUGE wrap. Before today, I had come to this Yali's quite often-- not because it was exceptional but because it was near my class. Each time, the manager would either try to upsell the more expensive drinks or comment upon what you are ordering which is kind of uncomfortable in itself but not enough to make me stop going. Today, on the other hand, was definitely the rudest encounter I've ever had. I had bought a coffee and snack and then sat down with my books to enjoy my meal. I had a soup from a different Yali's that I had bought earlier ane decided to eat that with my snack. I was immediately told to leave by the (I'm assuming) manager. This request for me to leave wasn't polite, it wasn't professional, it was very forceful and defensive. "I'm going to have to ask you to leave. Like, I pay a lot for rent of this establishment and you're really going to bring food from another restaurant? Come on now." First of all, how does bringing out an additional snack AFTER I had already bought something warrant this type of dramatic chastising? Second, as a cafe on CAMPUS, I have never heard of something more ridiculous. I will never be attending this particular Yali's ever again. Found this place a few months into my first semester at Cal. As much as I went here, I've never gotten sick of this place. The wraps here will always, ALWAYS be holy in my belly. Another perk is that you can order Peet's at the same time! To this day, Atmosphere: Study cafe. Slow and calm in the morning, but it gets crackin' as the day goes on. Very popular place for lunch on campus. Service: Great service! Some servers are friendlier than others, but we all have happy days and grumpy days so whatevsss. This place is a great place to study at, and a couple minutes walk from where I live so I come here a lot out of convenience, but honestly it isn't great. The service is pretty bland and so is the coffee. I've tried the latte, iced or hot, a couple of times and it was just never good; I stay away from the espresso drinks here now. I have to say, I actually enjoy their iced green tea latte (if all their drinks were like this one, I'd give the place 4 stars.) This cafe is one of the better places to use your meal points on campus! The inside is nice and clean, and you'll probably be surrounded by engineers (since the cafe is on north side) who are studying super hard or ko-ed on the couches near the TV. The wraps are filling, and you can customize them, so if you didn't really enjoy your wrap here, maybe try another combination. I usually get a wheat tuna wrap with a lot of cheese, some tomato sauce thing, olives, lettuce, cucumbers, peperoncini, and jalapenos. The line for wraps can get extremely long around lunch time (because of students coming in after class), so I would avoid this place around noon. It also takes a while to get your wrap because once you get your wrap, you have to stand in another line (the line for Peet's) to pay for it -_-. The deli menu has been updated to include not only the usual wraps but also salads, soup of the day, and combination meals. There's also additional add-ons to the wraps such as avacado/guacamole. Yesterday's soup of the day was Italian Wedding and it was delicious. The small cup is $3.50 while getting it with sourdough bread runs $4+. Definitely go in for a try. I also had a coupon for $1 off purchase of $6 or more from the Foothill dining common so I was lucky. The issue is always finding a seat. There are plenty of chairs and tables but they're always occupied by one person and one person only for a table of 2 or 4. My new favorite morning hangout! I'm a sucker for white chocolate mochas; they're just so damn good no matter where you go! Anyways, Qualcomm is one of my fast-growing favorite cafes on campus. Its cute architecture, bountiful tables & chairs and comfy, bright orange lounge really help this cafe straddle that fine line between comfort & acadamia. The only good thing about this place is the location: it's in the building where I work, and next to the building where I have most of my classes. I'll get coffee or food here if I'm running really late or work is really busy. This is ostensibly a Peet's location, but it's operated by Cal Dining, the food-services arm of the University. Most of their employees seem to be students, and students who are less than thrilled about their employment at that. Service is usually friendly, but is almost always SLOW. They have two registers, and on more than one occasion I've seen them only using one even when it's the lunch rush and they have a huge line of people waiting to get sandwich wraps in addition to the coffee crowd. What the hell? Speaking of the sandwich wraps, they're bland and overpriced. The only thing in their favor is that they have lots of fresh (and since it's Cal Dining, probably organic) veggies to put on your wrap. The wrap-making process takes forever since they have one person put your meat and cheese on it, then send it through a toaster, and then someone else takes it out and puts everything else on, wraps it up, and hands it to you. Then you get to wait for the slow cashier to operate the register, which takes even longer if you (like me) are paying with a regular credit card instead of using dining points because you don't live in the dorms anymore. They've recently started serving more things, like soup and mac and cheese. I haven't tried any of these, but my co-workers say they're nothing to write home about. Honestly, it's frustrating to see Cal Dining snag another amazing location on campus and serve their usual crappy food. Two stars. read more

Yali's is a regular part of my campus routine. Coffee and bagels are good and reasonably priced, and I've tried a lot of their options since I come here at least once a week.
