Don't do it. Deceptive pricing. Waste of money!!! Go to a reputable rental company and get the service you expect/deserve.

Avis Rent A Car - Car needs an oil change?!

I've rented from Avis for many years, but this last experience was disappointing. The word…read more"similar" in their car descriptions seems to be used very loosely. I reserved a Toyota Camry, but was given a Hyundai Santa Cruz mini pickup instead. To me, that's not even close to "similar." The Santa Cruz seats four but has a small, uncovered truck bed -- which meant all our luggage had to go inside the cab. That was inconvenient for several reasons: lack of security if we stopped anywhere, rain (which we knew was coming), and the risk of getting our bags dirty. If I wanted a small pickup, I would have reserved one. Ironically, I feel like if I had reserved a Santa Cruz, I probably would've ended up with a Camry! The rental agent seemed stressed and mentioned working long hours, so I didn't complain at the time. But since Avis asked for feedback, here it is -- I wasn't happy. After years of loyalty, I'll be looking at other rental options next time.

When we arrived promptly at noon, we were told that there were no cars available and to "come back AFTER 1pm." So that's what we did - arriving back around 1:30pm. Guess what? The location closes at 1pm and the employee specifically told us to come after their closing time. I called their number, of course no response. I emailed the manager of this location as well and surprise surprise, zero response. Absolutely terrible. Would give zero stars if I could.

They have a giant security robot that roams the block ( completely useless) and one security guard at the drive through ramp. My husband went down the steps into the parking garage to get the car and my daughter and I stayed with all of the luggage. The lobby began to fill up so to be polite my daughter and I headed out front with our luggage to wait and make space for the new people. We were approached by a homeless man that was completely out of his mind loaded. He tried to grab either me, my daughter, or my luggage. As he approached I blocked my daughter and belongings. He kept grabbing at us. He kept telling me " come with me now. Come now! I'll take you places. Girl you come with me" I asked him to leave and he wouldn't. This exchange seemed to go on forever. My daughter was terrified. I glanced at the big security guy and pleaded for help with my eyes. Unfortunately he looked at me and went down the ramp. A man suddenly came around the corner to get into Enterprise for his car he was renting and swooped in to save the day. He started shouting at the man " this is my family! Leave! Get out of here now!" That man was a hero and waited with my daughter and I until my husband came with the car. Ladies: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES leave that lobby while you wait for your vehicle! That security guard will not help you..... he simply a decoration for the building!!!!!! That homeless man eyed us down until the second we turned the corner in our car. It was absolutely terrifying. So much so my daughter begged and pleaded to not return the car to this location and instead drive all the way home. So we paid the fee and drove home.

We prepaid for a car and (just as happened to others I now see) they had no cars to give. As Seinfeld said... "anyone can TAKE a reservation, the hard part is to HOLD a reservation." Which apparently they can't actually do. We arrived to pick up a car we'd paid for, that car did not exist, day before a holiday, no options whatsoever. I suggested some solutions to the despondent nameless man at the counter, to no avail. I suggested he might not be very good at his job, he seemed to agree. He then picked up his cell phone started talking to someone and then left via the front door leaving us with a hapless young kid who was much friendlier but equally unhelpful. The other man (who would not share his name). Ever returned and I'd like to imagine he had a moment of clarity, stepped out into the cold morning air, sprouted wings and decided he would become a bird and just go do bird things for the rest of his time on earth.

I also reserved my car with Costco and had no issues with my reservation. They didn't have the car I reserved but I could see space was limited and they were able to get me a vehicle I was happy with, 2026 Bronco. The car was clean when I got it but it wasn't returned that way. I did some mountain roads and Oregon is wet anyway. I did apologize for not washing it, I normally like to return at least how I got it, especially at places like this where I know they can't wash them. Mine was clean on the inside but my pet peeve remains, please wipe down the outside mirrors, it's really hard seeing out of them when you drive at night. Even if you can't wash it, a good window and mirror cleaning goes a long way! Easy return on a Saturday morning, they were a half hour early which lessened the stress as I had a train to catch. Walking distance to hotels and neighborhood not bad. Besides the MAX stop was near by if needed. Overall a good place to rent a vehicle.

Later, we were told that there is no car washing facility at this location. It seems that should be remedied by the company. Location is central in downtown Portland. They said we were welcome to park our rental in the lot when we're in the city center and shopping in the area for free which was nice. There's a gas station closeby that you can fill up the tank before you return it. Reason for not full stars is that the coolant wasn't filled up so we kept getting an error message. That's something a car rental place should be on top of. Also, we rented it for 10 days for $275 and our car arrived at the port earlier than expected so when I returned the car 3 days early the only credit I got back was $32. For errands, the hourly rates end up making much more sense than going by the day elsewhere and there's no surprise $20 (or so) charge on the bill that I've seen in at least a few places. The only caveat is that their cars do rent quickly at some locations. I'm not the type to book as early as I probably should, and if you know you want a car at a set time a day in advance, it might be a good idea to reserve it instead of hoping it'll be there an hour before you're trying to get somewhere.

Instead of supporting the community, they create financial barriers that make it harder for people to access the services they advertise. My worst experience has been with Zipcar. I registered and paid the $25 application fee, but I was denied without any explanation. I never received a proper email response, and when I contacted customer service, they avoided my questions and failed to provide any clear answers. It feels unfair for a company to collect fees without delivering transparency or accountability. Practices like this don't help people--they harm them financially and prevent them from using the service as intended. I strongly believe that companies operating this way should be held accountable, because instead of providing solutions, they are contributing to financial strain and making life more difficult for the very people they claim to serve.

Well, we took delivery of our chariot the following month and set forth upon adventure. We felt like Lewis and Clark making the Kessel run in 12 parsec, but the hyperdrive worked flawlessly plus involved less portaging and/or cholera. Eating in the dining area kinda resembled that that scene in LOTR when Gandalf steps into Bilbo's house but oddly I discovered I kinda like feeling like a giant and regressed into eating my spaghetti with my hands while referring to my Apocalypse IPA as "Grog" (plus it had the added benefit as a defendable conclave against predators or gypsies). Sadly weather permitted the rest of our meals to be consumed in our camp chairs under Zeus's watchful eye. Bed was some space age super foamy thing crafted by magic gnomes, the furniture all folds into itself as if Optimus Prime got drunk and went slumming at IKEA. No complaints, these guys are top notch and we're already planning our next trip to Middle Earth or maybe the in-laws in Coeur D'Alene.
