​We loved our Essential Portland bike tour with Spencer last Friday!…read more ​It was our first visit to Portland and we love touring a new city by bike to get the lay of the land at the start of our trip--and this company did a great job. ​The bikes were well-maintained, well-fitted to us, and our guide Spencer did a fantastic job communicating the route, what to expect, and keeping us all safe during the tour. ​He took us through nice neighborhoods and city landmarks while frequently stopping to teach us a lot about Portland's history, present-day city life, restaurants, shopping, and buildings of interest. ​My local friends (Aaron and Rashmi) also paid to join our tour, and coincidentally we all stopped at one of Spencer's guide spots along the river at the Portland Fire and Rescue building that Aaron, my architect-friend on our tour, designed. When we told him, Spencer invited him to give us a quick speech on the building's design. We visited Latourell Falls, Shepperd's Dell, and Wahkeena Falls before ending at the iconic Multnomah Falls. Angela was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the tour interesting with all kinds of facts about the Gorge and the surrounding area. She even pointed out fresh blackberries along the way and showed us some banana slugs which, naturally, I was delighted by. I really appreciated that the tour wasn't just "look, waterfall!" Angela kept sharing little facts and observations that made the whole experience more interesting and gave us a better appreciation for what we were seeing. A beautiful way to explore the Gorge without having to figure out all the logistics yourself.

The tour kicks off by meeting up at a red building--easiest to find if you're walking just outside the perimeter. Look for a small black signage on the door. The owner usually leaves the door unlocked in the morning hours so look for benches set up for you to seat and wait for your group. Susan, our guide, is a Portland native who left for college and returned back to Portland. She gave us some great bonus insights beyond the standard tour -- like history of the places, including local tycoons, how roads were funded and how each section of the districts were divided. Granted that this is high season, but we were passed by at least 100 cars, trucks, trailers and large trolley cars. I called the office prior to making reservations and asked specifically about the bike path to the falls. I was lead to believe that it was very tame and safe--no mention of all the traffic and vehicles. We were not prepared for the narrow road with no bike lanes and often no guard rails on very scary drop offs. Two of our four riders were terrified after a couple of close calls with traffic necessitating we all turn back early. They would have never signed up had they known what they were getting into. Not everyone is a daredevil and you need to be straight forward in fairly describing the risk of your shared road.

Rose is her name and Captain Shane was not disappointing! Not only was he our Captain, oh Captain, he was extremely informative (educating us on safety protocol) open for questions, and pictures at the helm!We couldn't have asked for a more personable & entertaining Captain! In fact, I'd pay to see him in a comedy club! The ship itself holds 49 passengers and its big enough to move around and not feel like sardines, all packed in shoulder to shoulder. It has 2 bathrooms, a small kitchen with salon and I believe it's 3 levels. The only warning that I have is the dock is quite steep on your way to the ship and what goes down must come up, so it's not the easiest return to the parking lot but it's doable. I.e., I have had both knees replaced and have chronic back pain and I made it. Wear good shoes. We were on the river right at 6:30 and Captain Shane immediately put the mainsail up. I felt like I was back East, Westport Harbor, Mass. in 1976! My buddies and I were out on little skiffs when the Tall Ships started heading home after participating in the 1976 Bi Centennial celebrations They were absolutely majestic and a sight that I will remember forever! I want to say to both locals and visitors that the, Schooner Rose, is a special gift to everyone that enjoys gorgeous sunsets, our beautiful river and that lazy kind of feeling you get sailing! You will forget, even for an hour and a half, your problems, the worlds problems and the uncertainties that come with it all! BEST prescription ever!! We took the maiden sunset voyage of the Schooner Rose 85ft tall ship from the Harbor 1 Marina with…read moreour friends and Captain Shane. It was a beautiful evening on the Columbia River with ample room to move around the ship and 3 decks. We sat on the couch on the forward part of the ship and it was like being in our living room but with an amazing view. Captain Shane even allowed me to captain the ship and put on his captain's hat for a bit and his first mate showed me how to use the rudder control and compass and some basic right of way rules. I had a blast. Truly a one of a kind experience. They offered snacks as well and at the end of the tour, we sat on the ship docked with our friends and watched the sun fully set, talked with Captain Shane, and I even got a tour of the engine room. Hands down the best boat cruise in Portland. You can even bring your own drinks and food and we had a little picnic onboard. Note that in the future, they will AirBnB out the ship which would be an awesome stay.

They didn't have any appointments for DAYS, so I arrived the moment they opened on a weekday to see if I can "walk in" - This was fine. I received some helpful information and I was ready to buy right there and then when an appointment showed up, taking away the attention of the person helping me. Again, I perfectly understood. I told him that we can finish everything by phone and left my information. No call. I tried calling back the next morning just to see that maybe he had just forgotten.
