I love Freebirds, especially when they are running a $7 special for a burrito or bowl. I am partial to bowls, for the lack of carbs and gluten on the burrito. This was the next to last day for the promotion, so we made a point of getting there to take advantage of the special. It's fun to build your own bowl by selecting the desired rice (Mexican, white, brown or cauliflower), beans (pinto or black), protein (steak, chicken, or birra), sautéed vegetables, and toppings (shredded cheese, salsa, queso, guacamole, (extra charge), corn, cilantro, etc. The server was very patient while I decided. My bowl included cauliflower rice, pinto beans, birra, peppers and onions, cilantro, shredded cheese, and tortilla strips. He asked me if I wanted lime juice, and I went for it! This was my first time at freebirds, have been meaning to try it out for awhile! This location is in a somewhat abandoned strip mall. The service was friendly and quick. We got a burrito to share among the two of us, and it was enough for dinner by itself. I believe we got the normal size, though we filled it with a ton of items and the chicken fajita. I liked it well enough, I would probably give it a 3.5/5. It's tasty and a good deal. If they'd grill/heat the tortilla it'd be a lot better, not sure if that's an option. read more

Freebirds is a fast-casual burrito joint with craveable proteins grilled in-house by master grillers. I decided to stop by to take advantage of their $7 burrito or bowl offer. I waited in line and an employee will custom build your item of choice on an assembly line. You can choose from several different protein options as well as numerous toppings. They just released a birria protein option served with a consommé sauce so I decided to try this. My normal choice of protein is usually dark meat chicken on beef. I worked my way down the line building my burrito with my favorite toppings. This was the first time I tried the cauliflower rice with my burrito. Some of the topping options result in an up charge. I used to be able to substitute my beans for guacamole but they no longer allow this. The guac has a $2 up charge and they are not very generous and only give you one small scoop. I added the consommé sauce directly to the burrito which added a nice flavor profile. Also I really wish they would bring the spinach tortilla option back for the burrito. Food poisoning! I hate to write this bad review since I've been a regular here for almost 10 years. Overall quality of this location has sharply dropped over the last year or more. About two weeks ago, I ate here with a group for lunch and three or us, including myself, got terrible food poisoning. I'm confident it was from this location because this was the only place all three of us ate, and no one else we had exposed over the following 24 hrs before the onset of symptoms got sick. We all had ordered the cilantro lime rice which is what we later concluded was the most likely source of our identically timed illness and progression of symptoms the next evening. I'm aware this location is scheduled to be torn down eventually with the development of a new shopping center which has likely reduced incentive to maintain the restaurant's quality. I don't necessarily expect any changes to be made because of this, so those still ordering from this location be cautious! Safety of food is questionable! read more

I had what can only be described as the absolute worst burrito of my life. Seriously, this thing was a culinary catastrophe. I ordered a double chicken burrito with rice, beans, cheese, and chipotle mayo, thinking it would be a delicious and satisfying meal. Boy, was I wrong. Let's start with the chicken. It was the driest, most flavorless thing I've ever put in my mouth. Imagine chewing on a piece of cardboard that's been left out in the sun for days. That would be an upgrade compared to this chicken. It was like trying to eat a piece of sandpaper - dry, tough, and completely devoid of any moisture or taste. The lime rice was supposed to be a highlight, adding a burst of flavor and a soft, pleasant texture. Instead, it was as hard as a rock. I kid you not, I could have potentially broken a tooth on this stuff. It was like chewing on gravel. My rice cooker at home, which I use with minimal effort, produces rice that's a million times better. This rice was an insult to the very concept of rice. Now, the beans. These beans were a travesty. Instead of being thick and hearty, they were more like a watery soup. They kept leaking out of the bottom of the burrito, creating an absolute mess. I had bean juice running down my hands, dripping onto the table, and ruining everything it touched. It was like the burrito was actively trying to sabotage my meal. The chipotle mayo, which I was really looking forward to, was another huge letdown. It didn't taste like chipotle mayo at all. Instead, it had a sour, rotten flavor that made my stomach turn. I almost wanted to puke. It was like someone had left the mayo out in the sun for days, letting it spoil before slathering it onto my burrito. And let's not forget the tortilla. This tortilla was soggy and moist to the point of being utterly disgusting. It was so gross I didn't even want to touch it. It was supposed to be soft and pliable, but instead, it was like holding a wet rag. The whole thing was falling apart in my hands, making it impossible to eat without feeling like I was handling something that had been left out in the rain. To top it all off, I had to pay $24 for this normal-sized disaster. That's right, $24 for the worst burrito I've ever had in my life. I felt assaulted paying that price for such a terrible meal. I wouldn't even pay that for the best burrito ever. For comparison, Costa Vida, which has the best burrito ever, only charges $15 flat with a drink and chips. This experience was a total rip-off, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. In summary, this burrito was an abomination. The chicken was dry, the rice was hard, the beans were watery, the mayo was rotten, and the tortilla was soggy and moist. I paid an outrageous price for a meal that was completely inedible. If you're thinking about ordering a burrito from this place, save your money and go to Costa Vida instead. You'll thank me later. The servers were very nice though. I recently decided to try this place out again since my last experience was just ok. The catered our job and the nachos were so good. I was craving nachos one day and decided to give this place a go. OMG the nachos were fire! I ordered the chicken nachos with dark meat (they give you two options either dark or light chicken. The dark chicken has a really good smokey grill taste to it. Their queso is pretty bomb, it also comes on the nachos. They have so many topping options that by the time I got my food it was stacked high. They also have other options besides nachos. They also have burritos, tacos, and salads. So there is something there for everyone. The prices are very reasonable considering how much food they give you. They also offer a few different sauces to try, so make sure to try them. I went during my lunch break around noon, and they were steady. They have plenty of parking and you get through the line really fast. The cooks are nice and if you have questions they are pretty cool at helping you out. read more

The only downside is I noticed a sign when walking in that they had Beyond Meat options for vegetarians, but once I got up there it wasn't clearly labeled so I forgot to order it! Tried the Beyond Meat at Freebirds. Taste and texture work for me. Apparently the sodium can vary from day to day. Today it was fine. Cons. This location cut the product with fried potatoes chunks. The serving size would have been adequate if it was pure, but since it was cut it's not enough. I'll stick with a veggie bowl. You can ask for extra beans and rice all day, plus it comes with guacamole. At a $1.50 more it should be pure. Fried potatoes take away from the product. You don't put potatoes in the chicken and beef. read more

Holy sh**. Never again will I step back into this location. On a Sunday morning, staff hungover. I get it. I've been in their place but never ever spoke unprofessional in front of customers. Three staff members, a girl, a guy and a older guy who acted like he was a high schooler. We were ordering and while the girl employee was taking our order, she and the other staff members were talking about how they should close early and just leave. We're standing in front of them while they're saying this. I get it, we all hate work but come on. Next, there's no refried beans. They claim their machine broke. The older guy employee said, "I can go in the back and smash them myself but it will take 20 mins!" Like, bro. You're standing around, doing nothing. Go do it and have some ready for the other customers. I hope he wasn't the manager because he didn't care at all. No different types of cheeses. Just one. I asked the girl employee about the other cheeses and she replied, "Can't you see we have one?" Like WHAT. I had to hold back and not say anything. Like girl, I KNOW y'all had other cheeses because I've been eating here for years. Next up, half of the soda dispensers were just spewing out carbonated water. I look at the staff member and he sees me struggling to find one that works. Only one worked. Out of 9 different beverage flavors, one worked. I really didn't want to leave them a tip. Since learning that kids eat free on Sunday we've become a weekend fixture at Freebirds. I can get massive nachos while my kids get quesadillas or the tiniest burrito made from a taco sized tortilla. It was adorable and my 6 year old was very proud to have her own little burrito. The kids also get chips and a drink. We can all sit outside and enjoy the fresh taco scented air and and the savings. read more

I eat at Freebirds at least 2 to 3 times a week. I work all over Austin. The mobile app only work half of the time. Sometimes I get so frustrated with the mobile app. I just end up eating somewhere else. It's a mobile app. So it should be more user friendly. Please!!! Food has gone down in quality, hitting a pretty average caliber right next to Chipotle. Add in the fact I got smack talked by staff while they made my food. Basically, ordered a quesoritto (without realizing they no longer make them since I haven't been to a Freebirds in over 4 years). I was met with a pretty confused employee so I apologized and said it would be okay to pass on it and he told me he was new and sought out some help from his coworkers. The process went smoothly until checkout where one of the employees struggled to wrap my burrito. Which is when I got shit talked by two employees. By the looks of it, a new kid, and a catty superior. "How do you wrap this thing" "Like a normal burrito" "It's breaking apart" "Yeah that's why they are no longer on the menu" "Then why are we making it" "Because it's a special item" -insert eyeroll- Needless to say I was pretty uncomfortable at this point. I've worked food service before and would have NEVER talked so poorly about a customer's food while they stood in front of me. It's so unprofessional and just plain out rude. I sustained a back injury the day prior and was on meds and it made me feel even worse than what I already felt like. Unbelievable. I would never force someone to make something they don't offer or demand things not on their menu. I solemnly swear to never go to Chipotle again. Better quality, ingredients, price, and attitudes from staff can be found at Freebirds. I just moved to Austin about a month ago and have already been back 3 times. It's an unhealthy obsession! On my first visit I think the man behind the counter could tell I was a newbie so he walked me through the whole process and informed me of all the yummy options I had in front of me. I chose steak for my filling and he advised me that it's even better with a bit of garlic and lime juice to enhance the flavors. Good call, guy! Time for a review update. This place is still my favorite burrito place in all the land (English accent...It makes it sound more official that way.) You know I'm serious when I whip out my English accent. They have a rewards card, so you can get points after purchases and save up for their badass shirts. I want every single one of those shirts, but I choose to spend more dollas on food. The burritos continue to be amazing, as do the servers. More recently I've chosen the burrito bowls. I'd suggest instead of getting rice, pack on the beans. The steak is the best. I'll never order the chicken again! Also, add the green sauce to whatever you get... it's so good!
