One of the things I knew I had to try during my Texas trip was Tex Mex which is what brought me to Chuy's! When they say everything is big in Texas, the food in Chuy's definitely lives up to the motto. Serving sizes were generous and I can pretty much guarantee that you'll leave with a full belly. I ordered the Chuy Changa with boom boom sauce as my entree and we also had the queso and fajita beef panchos as appetizers to share for the table. Everything was super enjoyable. Feb 21, 2026 review: ------ This is one of my favorite Chuy's location. Ambience is great, both inside and outside patio at the back of restaurant. Parking can be tricky sometimes. Boom boom sauce is the star. The verde vegetarian sauce and deluxe tomatilo are amazing too. You can't go wrong with any of the those. Veggies enchiladas comes with two enchiladas, you can have different sauce for each. Other vegetarian items that we have tried are veggie fajitas, burrito, quesadilla and nachos. Guac is good too and comes in lot of quantity if you order as a side. Their jalapeno ranch is soooo good and goes well with their homemade chips which are very light. They refill the chips, and salsa and ranch as many times as needed. Oh and the best of all- tresleche cake. They run out pretty quick so make sure you ask for it up on arrival and ask them to keep aside one for you if possible. This location is almost always full so make sure you put your name on reservation list ahead of time. Parking can be little tricky on weekends but have plenty of spots in the back so should be able to find in sometime. It's walkable from zilker park location so that's another nice part about this specific Chuy's. Margherita is pretty famous, I haven't tried it but friends always loved it. read more

Chuy's is my favorite Mexican food spot in Austin! I love the Barton springs location near South congress as it's cute and homey. When you come here, ALWAYS order the queso - it's the best!! I ordered the chicken flautas for my main dish when we visited and they were amazing. I usually order the boom boom enchiladas but the crunch these had was delicious. We did had to ask our server to turn the fan down, at one point they had it on full blast for some reason, but other than that they brought us a bunch of chips during our meal and were very attentive. When am I going to be in Texas again? The difference is, the fresh red chili sauce is made in house daily. It is a little thicker with a smoky flavor, which makes for a richer and hearty-tasting meal. I also ordered an extra side of their hand-made corn tortillas to have with the chips and salsa. This was a lively and busy restaurant, the service was really good. The decor was very nice with plants, pottery and art on the walls. Last time my bf and I came to this Chuy's, we were super overstimulated and vowed to never go again, but after visiting a few other locations around Austin and coming back here- I can confidently say that they by far make the best rice and enchiladas! I've been to multiple Chuy's locations and this one is definitely up there! Great spot for some casual tex-mex and efficient service. There's a decent amount of parking in front and around the back, which is helpful. The interior design/decor is also very colorful and charming. As for the food, my usual go-to order are the Baja Shrimp Tacos (~$14, 5/5): - The shrimp are perfectly crispy! Topped with cilantro, cabbage, and pico de gallo which adds just the right amount of freshness. - Served with Mexican or Green Chile rice (both are great options) and refried beans. - Big portion sizes that will definitely fill you up Would also highly recommend pairing Chuy's creamy jalapeño sauce with their complimentary chips. One of my favorite things about this spot is the unlimited chips! They are fresh, light, warm. Dip it in their homemade pico de gallo, with their creamy jalapeño, it's the perfect appetizer and on the house they are also very willing to refill your chips! Don't be shy. My friend and I decided to eat at Chuy's before the Waitress musical (at Zach Theatre around the block from the theatre) as they are known for being quick to deliver your food. My friend ordered an enchilada taco plate and I ordered the two taco plate. Both plates came with Spanish rice and beans. My friend ordered an extra side of guacamole as her plate did not come with it. Literally, 5 minutes later our food was on our table. Chuy's must have a large and amazing staff! The food was tasty, filling and large in portion size (great value). Our server was Texas friendly and took our order pretty quickly after we had sat down. She also, came back to check on us and offered "to go" boxes. With so many folks in the restaurant, we felt like we were always on her radar and she prioritized our service. This being one of the O.G. Chuy's locations, you can't go wrong with the food here. This place just screams "Austin Cool Vibes," and I always make a point to stop in for Happy Hour when I'm in town for the annual SXSW festival. It's sort of a tradition among myself and my friends to meet here at least once, and we always have a blast noshing on tasty queso, guacamole, and getting drunk on large and strong margaritas. Nobody does Tex-Mex food like Austin, and Chuy's is terrific. Yes, it's a chain. Yes, locals will turn their noses up if you tell them you're going here. But get over yourself! The food is so good. And the place is always packed, so it HAS to be filled with SOME locals, LOL! The portions are large (my hubby and I can share an appetizer or two and still leave with leftovers) and the ingredients are high quality. The folks in the kitchen here know how to cook, too, and we have never once been disappointed in either the food or the drinks! They have a very tiny parking lot that fills up, so catch at Uber here if you want less stress (plus, you can drink more if you aren't driving, SCORE)! The inside vibe has a retro, 1950s Texas feel. That's not a great descriptor, but it's the image they project. Think vinyl floors and formica countertops and bright turquoise plastic booths! The biggest caveat here is that it gets loud. Not just LOUD, but LOUD LOUD. You literally cannot hold a conversation here when it's packed, and it's unpleasantly, obnoxiously LOUD with patrons having to scream over each other. We've been here for dinner on a bustling Saturday night, and never ever again. We just sat there and couldn't say a word. It was soooo loud. Looking for a quiet, intimate date night? This ain't your place. It's lively to a fault, but surprisingly, Happy Hour is usually more subdued and chill. Go figure. The Happy Hour specials are good, and you can get big margaritas for cheap prices. Be sure to check their website for hours and current pricing, though. Also, if you go early enough for Happy Hour, you can enjoy some peace and quiet as the restaurant isn't as busy during the daylight hours as it is packed at night. We love Chuy's. This was our first time to Chuy's! We went here on a day that we were starving and just wanted a lot of food for a cheap price after a long day. It took about 10 minutes to get a table on a weekday evening. I ordered a skinny margarita and my fiance got a strawberry marg. We didn't know what to order! My guest ordered the The King's Memorial Combo $15.78 The ultimate feast - seasoned ground beef enchilada with Tex-Mex sauce, chicken enchilada with Tangy Tomatillo sauce, and a cheese enchilada with Roasted Ranchero Sauce, plus a crispy taco and tostada chips dipped in creamy Queso. Served with Mexican or Green Chile rice, and refried beans. This was enough for 3 meals for him! It was so much food and if I ate meat we could totally just share this for dinner. I got the Veggie Enchiladas $12.71: A vibrant mix of spinach, zucchini, grilled peppers and onions, serranos, roasted green chiles, corn & cheese topped with Roasted Ranchero Sauce. Served with Mexican or Green Chile rice, and refried beans. They were really big enchiladas, but I did eat the whole thing. It was exactly what we expected. On our Tex-Mex journey in Austin, everyone kept telling us about the legend of Chuy's. Therefore, I could not resist stopping here for dinner one night to enjoy the Tex-Mex experience. We got here around 8:45 or so on a Sunday evening and surprisingly it wasn't as busy as we thought it would be. The vibe is totally meant for the kids, so I enjoyed feeling young just for a little bit. Service was also super quick too. We ordered guacamole for the table (chips & salsa were included as expected) before ordering the main meal. For me, vegetarian options were a slight bit limited, but I made it work. I wish the Tex Mex sauce had a vegetarian variant, but that's for another time. I got the bean & cheese burrito, but with the ranchero sauce. It was pretty good. I probably should've got the spicier one with green chilies, but that's okay. I also had them make a spicy margarita, which was very nice as that wasn't explicitly on the menu. Great place for students to come for a simple Tex-Mex meal "Full Bar" means margaritas and mojitos. Our guest loved her classic 'rita. No negronis or such here. The G&T was meh. The strawberry mojito is best avoided. Every dish is a variant of beans, rice, tortillas, queso and beef/chicken. Vegetarians can find avocados involved. My wife had the boom-boom sauce added to her veggie enchiladas. The heat alleged was an unfounded claim in our experience. For me, I had the red chili sauce and found the salsa served with the chips to have more heat. The chips are nice btw. It's a relatively noisy place on a Friday night. Bright yellow color palette gives a beachy feel. The servers are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. As others have noted this place is great for a visit after Barton Springs. May 25, 2026. After a day spent well at Barton Springs, my friends and I decided to dine in at Chuys. 1728 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, Tx. As soon as I walked in I immediately felt uneasy. As our hostess walked my group to the table, I soon fainted in the hallway. My friend helped me up but I soon fainted again. As embarrassing as it was, we still sat down. Instead of someone checking up on my health. A frail petite lady with white colored hair, who seemed to be the manager came up to me. She instead asked me if there was any alcohol involved. Not once did she ask if I was okay. And to her response, I said no because there wasn't. Not once did that manager ever pass by again. Instead, she cut my entire table off of alcohol without asking anyone else or informing us. There was a total of six of us. I only received one water refill, which was the first one to be put on the table when greeted. The second I received at the end of the check which we probably sat for 45 minutes. I myself am a server at a restaurant within DARDEN and I am so proud to say this would've never slided at Longhorn steakhouse. I won't be visiting this Chuys again, as the people who work there obviously stereotype all college students to be drunks. In the end, it felt like all that mattered was a table was sat, and a server would receive a tip. Though I had a "big as yo' face" bean and cheese burrito with two signature sauces (Christmas style: red and green) and rice, cheese quesadilla with green chile, and a strawberry margarita, nothing stood out, to be honest, except the red salsa which I thought had the perfect amount of heat, enough to slow me down but not stop me from chowing down the chips that were more fragile than George Glass. Full disclosure: the quesadillas stood out to my wife and our co-worker's kid. No bueno. To quote them, my wife asked, "When have I not been known to finish a quesadilla?" (it was either her or Maya Angelou), and the five-year-old boy didn't finish his because "the cheese is gross." As for burritos being as big as yo' face, I think next time I will bring along Precious and the guy from Mask and eat like a king. So in terms of pricing and affordability, you don't have to spend a ton to leave full and with some leftovers. Sadly though, I thought the food was alright. I got the chicka chicka boom enchiladas, and while I liked the enchilada sauce, everything else on the plate was not it. The rice was dry, beans were beans, and the chicken had little to no flavor. The queso we got start was fine, didn't finish it because the portion size was big, but I was good after a couple bites. The best part of the meal was easily their margaritas. They had a newer special the Spicy Watermelon margarita, that was so good, I had to have 3. (2 there and 1 to-go). Those run around $12ish, not bad for the size. Chuy's has been a staple Tex mex for me since 1990. Someone mentioned that they had a shrimp crab enchiladas special for $13.99. Had to try it and while all Chuys are great, I like the location on Barton Springs since the ambiance is eclectic and place is small and always bustling. Waiter was awesome and attentive immediately serving their awesome jalapeño ranch and pico salsa with chips. Honestly, their chips are too greasy and frail which is both unfortunately and frustrating to load up on these two dips. I've digressed. The shrimp and crab enchiladas were awesome with the sauce was not the typical over fishy cream/del Mar but had a rose coloring and just perfect. Recommend. The ticket time was just under 9min but I was there during 5p weekday. Yes, the margs are high quality and Palomas good too, just too much ice so be sure to ask for light ice. One of my favorite places for quality Tex- Mex in Austin. It's an institution that's been here for over 40 years. The food is fresh and cooked to order. I would say my favorite menu items are the famous boom- boom enchiladas, chicken wrapped goodness covered in a spicy cheese sauce, delicious.. and I also love the fajitas and tacos. The bar cranks out some of the best margaritas in town. , both frozen and on the rocks. Several happy hour deals at the bar. There is a fun unique folk artsy decor and a welcoming staff. Chewy's is tasty. I'd admit that. However, I was a bit disappointed in what I observed at tonight's order. It's obvious they put the enchilada in the aluminum container and then heated it from there because the cheese is burnt onto the container as you can see in the photo. I also observed that the chicken they use is most likely from a can as the way it is dense and then you touch it and it kind of falls apart like it's been in a can. Very disappointed. read more

Those who didn't give a 4 or 5 star review must've caught them on an off day... bc everything was amazing this past weekend! The complimentary chips and salsa (especially the creamy jalapeño dip!!) were so tasty. We also got the guacamole which was fresh and tasted great. For mains I got the single mixed fajitas (chicken and beef) which were actually really solid. Came with all the toppings, and refried beans and rice. How SGl felt the "food for one" was enough for two. My friend got the boom boom chicken enchiladas and said they were really spicy. Service was good and pretty quick. Love getting their big Mexican Martinis here, highly recommend! Finally, their tres leches cake is big enough to share between like 3 or 4 people and was delicious. After trying to find a different restaurant, and being let down twice.... stumbled across Chuy's. When in Tex, why no get the Mex, right?! It's a brightly colored building with an Elvis theme and diner vibes. Space was tight upon entry, and the restaurant was very busy. They took my name for the wait list, but I was seated within 5 minutes. The waiter greeted me about 3 minutes later and brought very fresh salsa and chips to the table. The salsa had great heat. I also ordered the guac, but it wasn't that special. All I could taste was avocado and saw large chunks of onion. I ordered the basic Taco and cheese enchilada plate that was served with rice and pinto beans. The Rice was a bit bland with tomato flavor, but the beans were well seasoned and tender. The crunchy taco shell had a bit of a burnt flavor, and the ground meat inside was a bit dry. The enchilada was good. Overall, my tex-mex experience was just ok. I get better at home in NC. The Blackberry Margarita I ordered was my favorite thing. The hostess was helpful. The waiter was prompt, but the food runner had a bit of an attitude.
