I have been in the market for a tattoo a long time. I have looked around for years and found the perfect place only a mile from my house. These guys are all incredibly gifted artists and all around cool. I picked Mike as my artist as I was impressed by what he did to a friend of mine. I met with him and gave him my ideas and emailed him some suggestions. I was a little afraid because when I got there he was still drawing out my tattoo. This is going to be with me for a long time and I didn't want a rush job. Turns out I was afraid for nothing. He constantly made suggestions as for color and told me what he was doing as he went. My opinion changed the next day though. I took pictures first and second day and compared them. Holy Toledo batman! It looked TWICE as good after the swelling went down! The colors and attention to detail are amazing! He incorporated everything I asked and even topped it! This looks like it should be framed and hung on a wall! If anyone is looking for a tattoo this is the place to come. I see others even come from out of town. I can't blame them. It is housed in a historic building and occupies what used to be a turn of the century bank. The safe and other remnants are still there. That adds to the cool ambiance. They were blasting some really old tunes too. I really loved listening to Buddy Holly. Great music even 50 years after his passing. Is it pricey? That depends. No it is not cheap true. You are paying for a high quality work of art that is custom made and drawn on you and will be with you forever. You get what you pay for. Ryan and David and Mike are all great artists. it is money well spent. My tattoo is big. Huge even. It defines me and says a lot about me. It is worth every penny. Within 15 minutes he had drawn up a sketch of an awesome looking tattoo, that i really liked. After a few minutes to think about it i decided to get it done. My dad went here last night to get a tattoo and cause I told him a few friends have gone and to try it. I'm ashamed I referred this place! This is what he has to say about it! I arrived 1 and 1/2 hrs before closing and was told there was time for a small tattoo. Then I was told he had to throw out the garbage and lock up. The web site said closed at 9 pm. I was told that he had dinner waiting and closing was at 8pm, the web site had not been updated. He was very rude and seemed like not in the business to make money, I was belittled and lied too. I would not recommend this tattoo parlor to anyone. I have lived here for over 25 yrs. I'm a career military veteran and a Kaw Enforcement Officer of 21 years. I was referred to Freedom Machine by another tattoo shop because of the type of design I was looking to have done. I brought a printout of the image (the stag patronus from the Harry Potter movies) into Freedom Machine and met with Chris the week before I wanted to have the tattoo done. He understood the effect I was going for and gave me some great feedback on how to execute the design so the tattoo would continue to look great as it ages. He was very friendly and professional, and I left feeling confident about the actual appointment a week later. Now that the tattoo is done, I absolutely love it. It came out even more beautiful than I imagined, and Chris did a great job of capturing in ink what is accomplished through detailed CGI onscreen. The image feels exactly how I wanted it to, and the shop was clean, professional, and comfortable. This was my first tattoo, so I really appreciated how at ease the shop and made me feel. I just finished my second session on my first tattoo at freedom machine. My artist was Ryan Dodson (owner.) From the start he was excited about my idea and we scheduled a time. I showed up to get my tattoo and the design was beautiful! He took the time to find the perfect spot on my arm and resize it so it would look the best. My first session was two hours and he nailed it. His lines were smooth and accurate. I have gotten compliments every time I'm in a T-shirt. My second session (several weeks later after healing) was even better. His shading was so light and feathered it looks like it was airbrushed. As an avid tattoo receiver I've experienced some amazing tattoo artists and shops and some sub par tattoos and shops. All in all, I have some beautiful work on my arms and shoulders. But, I was craving more, as I always do. However, I HATE PAIN (ironic?) and I hate egotistical, "know it all" tattoo artists even more, so you can see why I would've been reluctant to try a new shop. I was home one day, reading the community Impact and read that there was a new tattoo shop in downtown Pflugerville and their mission was to be all around nice guys that provided great, custom work. I thought this to be a unique concept for a tattoo shop (the nice guy part), but I gave em a ring. Jason (who ended up being my tattoo artist) answered the phone. Super friendly, and invited me to come in and we could chat. I talked to him about what I was looking for, and instead of rushing to a conclusion and shoo -shooing me out of the shop, he asked me to give him a few days, so he could draw up some ideas that were custom for me and one of a kind. After a few days, he touched base with me, and we set up a time to talk about it. I asked if I could leave a deposit and he said "Nope." I thought that was a huge sign that this guy loves what he does, and is in it for more reasons than just the payoff. Well, today was the day to get the sleeve finished. I arrived, and Ryan (the owner) and Jason both greeted me like we were all old friends. Jason and I got to work right away, and lemme just tell you, as a total wuss, I was pleasantly surprised that he was light handed, yet very detailed. He kept me abreast to what he was doing, kept checking in with me and was just so charming. Ryan also was fun...playing and joking back and forth with me as well. I seriously didn't want to leave. The shop is super clean and retro; the music is also quite nice....Oldies from Buddy Holly and Otis Redding...we were all singing along at one point. My arm is GORGEOUS...I mean, WOW..colorful, detailed and smooth. I am so so so so so so so so IN LOVE (sorry to my boyfriend) with JASON- he is really truly an artist that loves his craft, his clients and to top it off, he is a solid guy with tremendous knowledge, morals and a sense of humor. Cheers to you guys, I'm super excited you're around. Last bit of advice for anyone still hesitant to try them out or just get a tattoo in general... just walk through the doors...you'll know what I'm talking about. read more

I have been to several different tattoo shops in the past few years, and I have to tell you that this place was wonderful! My mother and I decided to get tattoos (for autism awareness), and so I did some looking around for reviews. At the time, Freedom Machine Tattoo only had one review, but it was such a good one that I had to check them out! Not only was I met with a smile, they opened the door for me so that I could talk to them, even though they were trying to close up the shop early due to the holiday! Mike took the time to talk to me and go over design ideas, he didn't seem irritated in the least that I was holding him up! While we had a general idea of what we wanted and had dropped off design sketches, we STILL found other designs the night before that had us questioning our choices. Mike took the time to talk to us about each one, what would look good, and was just all around wonderful at helping us decide! Everyone in the shop was great and even if they weren't working on us, they took the time to come and say Hi. A couple even came over to talk to me about my son, who I was getting my puzzle piece tattoo for...and didn't seem to mind when I went into "mommy mode" and bragged him up! Ryan Dodson is the only tattoo artist I have used for years. His work is absolutely amazing and his attention to detail and shading are phenomenal. I look forward to my tattoo appointments each time because I'm visiting friends, and Ryan and Mike are hilarious as well as talented. I highly recommend Freedom Machine and any of the artists there. Disregard all of the bad reviews on this tattoo shop, they have clearly never been to anything random shop in the austin area. First off, location sets a whole theme to the place. Very traditional and they are very respectful and try to work something out the best they can but the guys do have bookings every single day so it may take a few days to get what u want. Mike did my tattoo in 2 sessions outline first then color. He is a seriously awesome guy he has had a wild life and is a great person to talk to. His tattoo work is always perfect. I expected my tattoo to be a bit more american traditional with simple filled in colors but instead he surprised me with beautiful detail and shading, still american traditional but so much better than I had ever envisioned. I've been to shops all over austin and even oliver pecks shop in dallas and was treated like a newbie because I don't have many visible tattoos. A lot of artists tend to do that however at freedom machine I've never felt any pressure or judgement from the guys, they're really open with ideas and people. Very respectful, I love this shop and plan to get more tattoos here. read more

I have had two tattoos done at Freedom Machine. One was a half sleeve and the second one a sugar skull on my calf, my husband had a matching one on his calf. I have always said that I would never get a tattoo. I never found anything important enough to put on my body for the rest of my life. Until Father's Day came and my 2 year old son passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. My husband and I wanted to get matching tattoos to remember our sweet boy. We spoke to several artists and visited several shops. Ryan's shop was by far the cleanest and least intimidating for someone who has never wanted a tattoo before. He was very compassionate and understanding given our situation. We told him what we wanted and he drew up a beautiful tattoo for us. We had our son's name at the top, his handprint (Ryan recreated his exact print based on some handprint art he had done about a month before he died), and his birth date underneath. We chose him over about 4 other artists and I am very glad we did. He was very gentle and the tattoo looked amazing! He is very talented!
