Stayed here a few times while vacationing in Chicago. Rooms are clean and I like the pump toiletries so you don't have to use 4 bottle of conditioner or worry about packing them. LOVE Broken Shaker and the appetizers. Being pescatarian it's nice to have bar food that is within our diet, delicious, and not just fries. Only four stars because I missed the coffee bar/cafe and the rooms are a bit small, however spending more time out and about in Chicago is much more important than a big room! read more

I enjoyed my stay here it was very different from my usual but I can say it was a great experience

Im sad that I only had one night to stay!. The interior is not your typical hotel interior. It is different, hip and loud. The check in process was a breeze. There is a 50$ deposit fee that is refunded once you check out. The rooms aren't the biggest but the prices aren't the highest either. I got two rooms, a queen room and a quad room with 4 bunk beds. They found really creative ways to maximize space. The bathrooms are shower only, which wasn't an issue. Beware of the three dollar pack of skittles on your table when you get to your room. Or the 5 dollar single bottle of red bull, you might want some candy or to get your wings with some red bull but Jewel Osco is on the corner and its open until Midnight or so. There is a bar on the lobby level of the hotel. There is also laundry and a guest kitchen on the lower level. The hotel is on Ohio street and is in walking distance of many things within the area. I wish it was warmer when I visited. I would like to go back in the late spring/early summer. read more

Just like all the other reviews, my experience at Freehand was fine. I was traveling for work and typically stay at the Moxy, but Freehand was a little cheaper so thought I'd try this one. Upon checking in, employees were friendly enough. People are right: the rooms are very small. I could not get my my AC to work so I went down to the front desk. She said she'd send someone up to look at it and nobody ever came. Luckily I figured it out. But the lack of attention to guests was disappointing. The hotel itself was cute but felt old. Same with the rooms. I probably won't stay here again. I prefer the Moxy where it's a little newer, employees are very friendly and rooms a little nicer. read more

I woke up really appreciating the Freehand Hotel in Chicago. Every detail is just so... on. All the bamboo and tiki and mahogany... it's like Royal Tenenbaum's trophy room. I slept in a bunk bed. I'm 44. I slept well. No single inch is left unconsidered. Apache tapestries, vintage prep school lockers, Jurassic succulents, etc. So much cool stuff that I actually got philosophical for a second, waiting for my coffee. WHY do I care so much. Why do I even CARE about this shit. And the reason is because I'm SUPPOSED to. This was made only for people who would care. And that's actually a big deal. Because just underneath the biggest questions of all (eg: what is the meaning of life, is it even possible to get a taxi that doesn't smell like a Lebanese butcher's foot), is the question, "What is your quest"? In other words, what is the one nagging need that drives all of our decisions. And my quest is to FIND MY PEOPLE. Find. My fucking. People. It's why I wore the shirts I wore, waving the banner of the bands I loved. It's why I moved to NYC. It's why I TRY at anything, just to get that airfare, just to arrive in a new city, just to unlock that door, just to linger longer where they're pouring old fashionds and playing my favorite songs. It's why I say YES to projects or adventures or partnerships that on paper look fiscally insane, or say NO to relationships with brilliant women that on paper look sensible and perfect. And maybe 999 out of 1000 wouldn't.. even shouldn't care that the swag the hotel staff wears is hand-made and not for sale, and that the tones of the activities board are all muted for effect, and that no two burlap lampshades are the same or that montauk driftwood shockingly WORKS in the window sills against bleak downtown Illinois grays, but I do. The location is great. Its just around the corner from a subway stop and is a short walk to the river, Navy Pier, and Millennium Park. But the rooms are lacking, especially for the price. The mattress was very uncomfortable and I could feel the springs sticking out in various places. The thermostat in the room could not be adjusted past a certain point, so the room was uncomfortably warm at night. As others have noted, certain basic things (like drinking glasses) that you would find in any hotel were not provided. The carpet felt dirty and the bathroom smelled damp and mildewy. The shower, however, was a nice size and the bath towels were good quality. There was very little space around the bathroom sink though. I enjoyed the hotel's proximity to everything, but would probably not stay here again. I did enjoy Broken Shaker, the bar downstairs. The setting was really cool, the drinks were inventive, and the staff was very attentive. read more

Freehand Chicago is a great spot! Every time I come to Chicago I stay here and have yet to have a bad experience. Pre-covid this place was the spot to go before going out when Broken shaker was open. Juan is literally the best bartender ever and I am deadass obsessed with him. The staff at the front desk is great also! Again, pre-covid, I came in on a snowing February night after traveling from NYC for 10 hours. It shouldn't of taken that long, but I won't get into the nonsense I endured at O'Hare. Marcus at the front desk was amazing. I checked in, and went to my room and my flatmate was.. less than considerate by taking over two beds in the four person room instead of just the one she had booked. Me being at the end of my rope went down stairs with said flatmate and without question Marcus took care of everything. Now on for Covid times. Still a fucking gem. Front desk was just as helpful and amazing. I don't remember her name (I fell like a jerk for not) but the girl who was at the desk all weekend remembered my name and was super helpful. Anything from towels to a joke to dinner recommendations she was absolutely perfect. Long story short this place is worth the stay. Its one of the better hostels I've stayed at and I will always stay here when I'm in Chicago; of course until i move there haha. read more

I was told "IT IS NOT OUR JOB TO CARE ABOUT YOU" by the front desk staff. This was the absolute worst hotel experience of my life. I booked 4 nights, and arrived late. They had cancelled my reservation by the time I arrived. I had prepaid so they had $750 of mine. They told me I could have a room, but I would have to pay an additional $750 for it. So they billed my twice for the one room I booked. Instead it sat there empty and I went elsewhere. Really bad experience here. There was a woman in my room who was literally storing dirty, rotting food and you could smell the rot in the hallway. She had opened yogurt, canned cheese, ranch dressing and literally a giant pot of creamed corn. When I confronted her about the smell she got mad and then hid all the food under the bed. Can't make this shit up. I had seen the staff come into the room before, but they literally turned a blind eye to it all. I ended up needing to cancel my stay because I couldn't stay there in the filth- the carpet was also stiff with dirt and disgusting. This place looks hip on the website, and it is, but temper your expectations. I'd describe the Freehand as an upscale hostel more than a boutique hotel. We booked a king deluxe room, and it was still very small/cramped. We were celebrating our anniversary, and the environment is not particularly luxurious or romantic. The hallways are dimly lit and reminiscent of the flophouse that the Freehand used to be. The staff at the cafe are lovely and they deserve a shoutout. read more

Stayed here while passing through the city! It's in an incredible location- walking distance from the lake and the river. Walked to millennium park and navy pier in about 20 mins! Expensive restraunts/shops nearby. The view from our room was a nearby parking garage which was a little disappointing but understandable. Friendly staff and clean spaces. Freehand is located in a highly sought after location with centralized destinations closeby. You're steps from the mile, shops at North Bridge, the river and all the train lines. If you just need a cheap night to stay in an otherwise pricey neighborhood, this is a nice pick. I have heard much discourse about the shared rooms, and I'd believe the horrors. This is a high traffic destination for homeless and tourists alike, and you can bet to run in to some questionable people. I however got a private standard queen bedroom for $101 right before St Paddys weekend by booking direct, which was very promising and paid off, until they linked me to precheck in. They asked for my card details, noting that it will be on file for any holds so that they wont ask at check in for my card, but they did still end up asking me for my card for a $50 incidentals hold which I still haven't seen. I am still within the 10 day period of recieving that, however. The lady at the front desk was as others mentioned, not the most welcoming. But that's just the locals for you, they don't really like tourists. Upon check in, I dig the dim lit ambience and am no stranger to the lounge area and the Broken Shaker, a very welcoming spot. (I need the mushroom tacos back that I had years ago. Do you ever do those anymore?) The elevators (only 2) are a battle for a ride due to them being so small. I'd suggest packing light for this hotel just to fit in the elevators. Being on the 11th floor in 1110 was alright; its a parking garage view but very quiet besides the parking garage noise. The room itself is beyond tiny. I mean I've been inside boutique hotel rooms that were considerably small but we struggled to walk around the bed. Reminders of the 1920s building shine in this little shoebox as it features a lingering smell, terrible ventilation, dust balls and paint chips everywhere, and ratty torn up decorative pillow. The bathroom has amazing tile but barely any light. The water pressure was on point. It did feature a noisy little toilet. Other reviews mentioned the towels were questionable and they had no soap, but they had great towels and great soap while I was staying. Lastly, the bed was comfortable and you truly cannot beat the stay for the price. Thanks for the good time Freehand. Do not be fooled by this hipster looking boutique hotel. My husband and I stayed here for a weekend staycation and it is definitely not representative of the pictures. It's more a grungy, hostel that was "redone" with a high price tag. Our room was incredibly small with one window with bars that looked out onto a parking garage, yet we paid more for being on the top floor. The floors were dirty, Garbage was in the trash can, dusty tables, and best of all- mold in the shower curtain with previous guest's hair on it. Not impressed, and especially doing COVID-19 times- they have no reassurance or verification of cleaning procedures or even asking where you had traveled. Not safe during COVID! read more

This hotel was the cheapest I was able to find in the downtown Chicago area. I was looking for a place that was close to all the attractions and wasn't far from the subway. For $80 a night, you can't expect a luxury hotel, but this hotel is definitely one of the nicest ones I've stayed at at this price point. The only things to consider is that the room is very small, basically only big enough to fit the bed and a small desk on the side, and that the view is depressing because you can only see the rest of the building. Other than that, the room has everything you need and would expect at a hotel, and it was very cozy. There was free WiFi which worked well for my needs. I wouldn't mind staying here again if I'm ever in the area. read more

I love Freehand and frequently stay at the LA and Miami ones. Chicago is nothing like those. Chicago SUCKS! Stay somewhere else. I have my dog w/ me and they wouldn't even give us bowls despite paying over $400 per night. I had to order from uber eats to get styrofoam containers. They also wouldn't give me silverware to take to my room. There's no room service and the gym would be a great spot to hang yourself (not much else). I can't put into words how disappointing this stay is and can't wait to check out!! . I will never stay at this location again. The best word to describe this place? STALE. But I'll get to that in a second. Two stars only for the location. The hotel-hostel is situated right downtown next to a red line metro, bus stops, restaurants, movie theatre, shopping, Michigan Ave., etc. The price you pay is really for the location ONLY (lol). The actual hostel DEFINITELY wasn't my cup of tea. The rooms and halls are very dimly lit with dark furnishings, no natural light, and a weird basement smell which altogether gives off a dreary feeling. The carpet was old and had this crunchy feeling, like it's been there since the 80s or something. Frayed at the edges, accumulated dust in the corners... yuck! The bathroom has this mold/mildew smell to it, which was unpleasantly sweet and dank. The shower curtains had a lot of old dirt and were in need of a scrubbing. Accumulated dust in the corners of bathroom floor. Stained curtains hanging from the bunk beds. I was given a washcloth with an old stain on it (just replace them, seriously). I spent 11 nights there and my sheets were not replaced even once. The room was directly facing the inside of a parking garage so there was no natural light. The room heater broke on the COLDEST day and all they did was hand us 2 blankets after waiting 1 hour for a space heater. Let's talk about the kitchen, which was a dirty communal area that certainly smelled like a dirty communal area. There you will run into a few hippies that randomly play their guitar or just hang in there because they actually live there. I couldn't WAIT to check out!!! The best thing the hotel has is the cocktail restaurant, The Broken Shaker. The decor, ambience, and bar staff are all pretty lit. TL;DR - don't stay here unless you are TRULY on a budget. read more

My Bed was not made when I arrived. Not just wrinkled due to a bad laundry keeper job but sheets in complete shambles I let the Lady with glasses upfront know. she seemed confused by my statement. so then I asked for my bed to be made/ new sheets it was noted as if it was gonna be handled. but when I asked for an update a hour later she made an excuse and said there are no more clean sheets due to a Shortage. This was the last conversation with this woman that I had my first night everything else I'll mention below happened afterwards but her immediate suggestion after stating that^^ - seeing that I was calmly very displeased was " if I want to cancel my reservation?" It was the 8:30pm obviously I didn't want to have to find a new room in the "middle" of the night. so defeated after a long day of travel already. I said "no, I'll figure it out." Also didn't receive towels and when I asked they said there should've been 1 for me & I had to say again there wasn't she gave me a towel that was very small one that if given 2 towels at normal hotels I'd put that smaller one on the ground as a mat & the larger one for my body but at that point I was displeased & just accepted the small towel. I asked about the iron & board she said I'd have to go to the laundry room I said fine. I could tell from the first interaction in 2 mins and it was proven throughout my First night she was bothered by my inquiries. her responses were what they were suppose to have done but obviously didn't & I was wrong for saying otherwise. The next morning I went downstairs to the laundry room to use the iron/board there was an iron-no board so I went back to the front desk (little interaction with them but they were definitely much nicer & accommodating) --to ask about it & they had a different response. Asking me if I wanted one to use downstairs or would I like both to be sent to my room. I requested it to my room. They did send one up. Though the iron was low quality & the board was mini I managed. Keeping in mind all the above states on the reservation & website if requested would be provided. I am from Charleston, SC and I made this nonrefundable reservation over a month in advance with full intent to attend St. Patrick's parade and an NHL Chicago Blackhawks game before the coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by WHO. Note, both St. Patrick's parade and NHL have been cancelled. As I am getting refunds on my flight, NHL tickets, Freehand Chicago refuses to refund me for my hotel reservation. Sure, it's a nonrefundable reservation but do you have any idea what is literally going around right now all over the world? I've called the office and spoke to Jenna on 3/12, Amanda on 3/13, and Janelle on 3/13 regarding a full refund. They offered to reschedule my reservation but again, COVID-19. It is unpredictable for everyone when and if they are going to travel again. Janelle (general manager) told me she's unable to issue a refund despite the 'issue.' I asked her to clarify which issue she is referring to and avoided saying "coronavirus" at all costs (including my reservation deposit apparently). I simply stated to Janelle, "It's disappointing to know that Freehand Chicago cares more about their profits than the well-being of their guests." Janelle stated, "that's not true" and immediately placed me on hold. I've left a voicemail to the Director of Operations of Freehand Chicago, Jenna Ubrig and have not yet received a call back. Again, I am very disappointed with Generator Hostels, an international company, who partnered with Freehand. During this coronavirus pandemic, I am entitled to a full refund. I hope I am speaking for all travelers who had to cancel their trip as well. This company is taking this 'issue' too lightly and it's greatly unappreciated. read more

The bathroom has no ventilation so it gets humid and the smell just accumulates after a few days no matter how much you clean. You are given one limp pillow and uncomfortable sheets. The elevators are small which was inconvenient. The seats at the bar and the lobby area were always dirty and perpetually smelled like BO. I used to stay at Freehand hotels regularly, and they were great. But the pandemic has really changed them. Both at the Chicago location and New York location, they seem to be slowly converting them into run-down, somewhat dirty party motels. Unfortunately, they're still charging rates that would make you think they're a nice hotel. The biggest issue is that the service is horrible. Nobody answers the phone at the front desk, and they're rude to you when you're physically at the front desk trying to discuss something with them. I heard a rumor that the staff is unionized and basically can't get fired. And, as much as I'm a believer in unions, this sort of demonstrates how much service can decline when workers don't feel any sort of incentive to do their jobs. Also, I booked through a third party (which is totally common!) who reserved me a higher level room than what I got. When I arrived, I got the lower tier. And when I asked the person working at the desk when I checked in, she was unwilling to investigate the discrepancy. I *might* try the LA location one more time since that seemed to be a newer and more professional hotel. But other than that, I'll probably never stay at another Freehand again. read more

Freehand charges a $5.88 per night urban fee (a resort like fee for amenities). It was hidden under a section on Hostel World's website. Urban fees is a way for the the hostel to make more money. Walked in to an overwhelming stench of sewage. Which, honestly, had they actually addressed I'd have been fine with.....sh%t happens. But, after a less than energetic welcome at sign in, no mention of why the entire bottom floor / lounge / bar smelled like a sewer line......off to a horrible start. Rooms are tiny. Which is in contrast to their LA location. Didn't go to the bar Bc the smell made me seek other places to eat / drink, so not sure if this shaker holds up to the LA / MIA locations. Also, went to get a drink of water as I was going to bed.....yet not a glass in the entire room. I'd give it a 1 star outside of the fact it is the middle of winter and was extremely cheap, and it's generally in a good walking location to anything you need. Otherwise. I'd highly advise skipping it. However, the LA and MIA locations are great. Just Find another place when in Chicago. read more

I don't recall if I wrote a review when I was here in 2015 but I was here again and just absolutely amazing experience. First of all it doesn't even feel like you are at a hotel/hostel. Amazing 70's decor, unisex lobby bathrooms, board games to enjoy in the lobby and bingo nights, hipster bar with great drinks, a real coffee shop (even when you order room service they get the coffee from the shop), room service food had fresh and healthy options, and the cherry on top was the excellent customer service. I was here for Lollapalooza weekend and Bed Head donated a FREE festival backpack with lots of festival goodies (doubt any other hotels do such partnerships) and even sponsored a free hairstyling day for the festival goers with a DJ and all. Just great vibes all throughout and had many great convos with the hotel guest -which doesn't ever usually happen at other hotels. read more

Please be warned, the photos of this hotel make it seem like it's a unique, luxury, boutique hotel until you step into the door. This "hipster" environment is just how it sounds - small, dark, and grungy. This is a glorified hostel, lots of young, loud, ready to party travelers. The rooms are tiny, dank, and barely have room to move. There is no fridge, no ice machine and the shower is barely large enough to stand in. The staff is less than pleasant and are unwilling to help with any issues. While this may seem like a nice place to stay.... just move on. Trust me. read more

Cons: When we arrived in our room, we realized there was no hand soap in the bathroom and the lighting in the rooms were awful. The worst part of stay was getting stabbed in bed with a nail poking out (attached pictures below). When I told the front desk about it, the man cut me off while I was trying to show pictures of the nail and the cut. He asked what room and quickly (and insincerely) apologized before asking, "anything else?" He didn't seem apologetic at all and seemed to think it was an inconvenience more than anything. There are many other places with way better service to stay at in this town! No heat in the room. 4 hours after inquiring about fixing it, nothing was done. When I called again, no apologies whatsoever and still no action. Rooms are depressing too. Works for the budget traveler but that's about all. My gf and I stayed here this past Labor Day and wasn't our first time here. We stayed in a queen private room last time, so I figured I'd drop $20 more and get a king private this time. Big spender I know...lol. We love the ambiance and the bar. The hipster thing is cool...but...just but. It's just a place that if you see a hipster walking down the street, the odds are pretty good that they came from this hotel. The room from a queen to a king were not that big of a upgrade, but for $100 or so bucks...who cares right. Slept ok...room was clean and so was the bathroom. The issue we had was with the mattress. The mattress SUCKED!!!!! We stayed at a $80 a night in the middle Iowa on our trip back from Colorado and they had a unbelievable mattress. But this place, being blocks away from everything...was probably something we can't overlook for next time. Plenty of hotels...maybe for a couple bucks more, but how much is a good sleep worth it too you??? Btw, the morning breakfast...don't recommend the squatter lifestyle cafeteria set up. This place is a fantastic find! It's an old building that has an eclectic mix of boho-chic, craftsman details, original art and lots of swanky dark hidden corners. You can rent a bed hostel style, or reserve a whole room for your family. There are four of us, each wanting our own beds, so we are staying in one of their quads. This room provides two solid bunk beds, a little couch and a private bath. We are on the 6th floor with a great view of the Hancock Tower. The location is also perfect for walking around downtown, along Michigan Avenue or hopping on the L to explore the city. There is a free breakfast, but don't count on it. It's mediocre. You can store your own food down in the basement dining area and prepare it if you want. On the main floor there's a charming bar in the back with a welcoming seating area before it. Best of all there is an extensive collection of National Geographic magazines dating back to the 60's. A coffee bar is in the front entrance area. The rooms ARE tiny. And the place is dark. But it's clean and fun and in the center of everything. You could stay in a traditional room in a more traditional hotel near by, but the price is what convinced me to give it a try. Seriously such a great place. Easy access to the bar downstairs and the staff are amazing. I went to the bar and my friend stayed in the lounge while I went back up to the room really quick. There was a weird guy that got in the elevator to go up. I had a couple drinks at this point and as a 21 year old woman I was feeling very uncomfortable. He asked me what floor I was on and asked what I had planned for my night. I told him my friend was waiting in the room for me and that I had to go. He shook my hand and KISSED IT and told me my eyes looked like sunflowers I got off the elevator and went to my room. On my way back down I passed him at the bottom of the elevator kind of waiting for something. I went to the front desk and told this very very nice woman named Mariah that there was a weird guy hanging out at the bottom of the elevator and she immediately went over and talked to him. I never saw him again. After I got my friend we took a lap outside the building and sat out front in their heated patio. This woman came up to us asking for something but we had no clue what. It was pretty uncomfortable. There is a 24hr security guard named Robin who was watching out the window the whole time to make sure we were ok. We walked inside after that and told them how much we really appreciated them looking out for us.
