I visited this location on st Patrick's day and the beer of the day was delicious. I don't remember what it was called but it doesn't matter as they only served it for the holiday. I usually visit the other location which is the main brewery and they offer a lot more of a variety and the prices are cheaper. I have to admit the location here is nice and the staff is beyond friendly. I have never had a problem with customer service lacking in any Freetail location that I go to. Unlike the main brew pub this location does serve food and they whip up some pretty tasty pizza. I strongly recommend you stop by and visit FreeTail or at the very least stop by the 2000 S Presa location. You will not regret it and you'll thank me later. They sell growlers here for $5 and one can refill it for up to $9 or more (depending on what it is you're getting) you can't drink the growlers there or the big bottles that they have in their fridge. I thought I had written a review on this place, but I guess I just wrote it in my mind... creepy. So, there are tons of great reviews already so I'll just give a quick opinion/update: This is a great place to watch the World Cup, as it is not your quintessential sports bar, but has a unique feel along with huge screens and a lot of beer. I don't love the brews, but they're definitely good. Same with the food. What I really enjoy are the people - both the bar staff and the patrons. Just a cool, laid back crowd. I've never sat outside, but it looks enjoyable when the weather isn't being evil. Call and make sure their kitchen is open if you're going early. I showed up the other day at 2, and they said they were only serving drinks... All in all, Freetail is another "happy place" for me. read more

I'm from Oregon and I spent a month in North San Antonio, and this place was my best find. Coming from Oregon, our selection of brew pubs of this style is plentiful and we can be pretty picky. This place became my home away from home. The beer is solid, the food is solid, and the brick and mortar is solid. Plenty of TVs, outdoor seating, and great service. I'd happily bring any other picky Oregonian in here with 100% confidence they'll love it. I was served at table and bar by a variety of people. I almost don't want to write this review.... But I guess I can give you my take on it. First off, San Antonio isn't really known as a Pizza City. As far as I know there isn't a San Antonio Pizza. So most local places copy New York or Chicago Style Pizza, and for the most part they do a sub par job at replicating these amazing Pizza's. Freetail is a Micro Brewery that happens to do Pizza. For the price they charge, you would expect something gourmet, and they do try. They just don't really hit the mark. They do have a really good Caesar Salad, they make the dressing themselves. I added grilled chicken which obviously wasn't fresh and it killed the salad. The best Pizza that I've tried on the menu was the Pizza Carbonara :Thin Crust, Alfredo Based, with Mozzarella, Chicken, Bacon, Asparagus. I really do enjoy this Pizza. The problem with it is the lack of authenticity, this pizza would the thrown out the window in New York or Chicago, you'd probably get shot in Italy. The saving grace for freetail is the BEER!! They make a very good Red and a decent Stout. If you sit at the bar you can watch them make a batch. I really do like going to this place, the beer is great. The food could be better. If you want to try the beer go on Tuesday because they have 2.50 pints that night. read more

The margherita pizza is pretty good. Fresh tasting with Buffalo mozzarella but it did get a bit soggy and raw doughy from the fresh tomato juices. I've had their beers bottled before as well and they are a solid craft brewery in the otherwise beer wasteland of San Antonio. Meh. I hate to sound like a LOLCATZ, or Grumpy Cat, but really? What's it about? Craft beer? (Um, I make my own) It's "OK" - nothing has ever left me wishing I had worn socks - just to see what happened. The food? MEH. So memorable, I don't remember what I ate, or what anyone at my table ate. And the service - well, that cost them a star. When you send back "bad" wine - even if you don't think it's bad, you open a new bottle and serve a less sophisticated palette the reruns. TIP: Go for cold weather patio and fire. Great for lunch or dinner. I am trying to hit all of the different places near my work so this was perfect. The pizza was so much better than I expected. My first beer was the Rye Wit. I normally drink their bats outta helles but I wanted something lighter. It was very refreshing and exactly what I wanted. The pizza I got was the mac n cheese pizza. I can never pass up the opportunity to carbo load on mac n cheese. And even better was the added bacon on top! The small was perfect for just me and I was even able to bring back leftovers. Not a bad brewpub with good beer, but only okay food & service. Went here for dinner on a Friday night. It was busy, but not so busy that we couldn't find a table either inside or outside. It was a bit noisy inside, so we chose to sit outside. Mostly large picnic tables outside. Unfortunately, one side of the table faced directly into the setting sun. Dog friendly. Food: 2* I had a custom small pizza. The crust was cooked well, but that was about it. Too much cheese. Cheese was melted, but lacked the nice browned top of a well cooked pizza. Roasted red peppers - too many and under roasted. Onions - again, under cooked. Pine nuts - not enough considering they're considered a prime topping. Disappointing. Beer: 3* About average for a microbrewery. Some disappointing off flavors. Service: 2 1/2* Slow getting us drinks when we came in. Slow when waiting for additional drinks. Flights of beer didn't come out as cold as I would have liked. Had to remind waiter/waitress of beer we were waiting on, but it came out immediately after that. Not the best brewpub. There's certainly room for improvement, but I will certainly be back. read more

Freetail has come a long way since they first opened. The beer was sometimes undrinkable and the food was nothing to write home about. Additionally, I found the service to be surly when it was mildly attentive. Not a good combo so I stopped going to Freetail about a year ago. However, something epic happened yesterday that required me to make a trip to FreeTail. Real Ale from Blanco, Texas was unleashing a collaborative beer that they made with Freetail called "RealTail". Being fans of Real Ale, BF and I had to go check it out. Service at the bar was still crap...I always seem to get the same guy. Damn the luck. We finally got to sit at a table and my whole experience changed. Our server was awesome-attentive and knowledgeable and nice! I asked her to transfer my tab at the bar to her because I wanted to ensure that we took care of her when the bill was settled. The Real Tail was pretty tasty. It's brewed with cactus pods and agave nectar and had a nice smooth taste to it. If this is the path that Freetail is on, I may set up a tent in their dining room and move in! We didn't eat but the food that was passing by on the way to other tables smelled great and looked it too. I may have to go back and give their pizza another try--I just won't be sitting at the bar. read more

First time there and my wife and I went with our 2 year old son on St Paddy's Day. Even though it was busy everyone was very friendly and the service was awesome. Our waitress was on point and had great recommendations. The beer is solid! Had the seasonal "Green" Wit beer and it was just amazing! The Pizza is delicious as well. All the kitchen staff was busting their humps to get the food out and to make it look good at the same time. All the employees seemed to get along and played like a team. As a newbie in the San Antonio area, my opinion of Freetail is peer pressure free. I love beer and I have to say that the beers were really great, and that's what counts most when you enter a brewery! I had a smokey beer called the Rubio; sort of reminiscent of the aroma and after taste of a good scotch. I also enjoyed the Aloha pizza, which was just enough for two people. I would say that I look forward to going to this place again, and with their Tuesday special of $2.75 per pint, I may just become a regular! read more

Get there early to save seats on big game nights otherwise it's standing room only. This might be obvious but don't bring non-beer drinkers. Not many alcoholic alternatives to beer. The Hearts pizza (Queen of Hearts?) - artichoke & hearts of Palm...wow. We weren't even hungry, had come in for the beer but once we saw & better yet smelled the pizza we had to have one. Outstanding. The beer here lives up to their reputation (a reputation that had even reached our ears in far off McKinney...where we don't get Freetail beer). We've come several times with our dog and have had a great time on the patio sipping craft beers and gorging on pizza and nachos! It does get busy even for early eaters like us but most patrons don't mind sharing their super sized tables. Our kiddos even ate pizza with veggies and pesto because they enjoyed being outside with the dogs so much. The occasional cigar smoker was a nuisance but we were outside and the breeze helped clear the air a bit. Service was slow but they were busy and even offered a water bowl for a parched pooch. It was good and lots of beer and related beverages to choose from, but I'm not much of a drinker and for the size of the small pizza I got, other than asparagus I could've had the same thing at One of those "we'll build your pizza in front of you" places for a few dollars less. A friend got the BillyHippie cheesesteak and it didn't look too impressive. The cheesy bread was pretty good as it seemed to have Alfredo sauce or the like on it. Artichoke/spinach dip was really creamy. I think I was told it had goat cheese in it. I'd go back if someone else wanted to, but I don't think I'll go out of my way otherwise. read more

I and my cousin visited this place yesterday (Saturday, September 29, 2012). My curiosity was that I'm a fan of craft beer and I wanted to have a taste of theirs. The service was okay; the place wasn't that crowded and we seated ourselves. The food is typical bar food; although, I really liked the bbq pizza I ordered. Then again, it was my weekend to crave any type of meat. The beer I had was their Rye Wit. It was good and it had a slight fruity taste at the end. I didn't know they served their beers in a beer flight. I didn't any indication anywhere via menu or their "beer" board that it can be served that way. The next time I'm there, I'll try out their beers that way. All-in-all, nice place. Oh, I forgot to mention that they have big-screen tvs showing sports galore! Luckily, we were there during Saturday late lunch. I don't know how the scene is during Sunday Football days and Monday Night Football. read more

I had a Freetail brew this week and it made me curious enough to visit the brewery. The beer quality was wonderful: wit, triple as well as the the Irish Red. I did wish they had a porter or stout, however it doesn't surprise me considering the temperature in Texas. They have food? Check. Televisions to watch the game? Check. Happy hour specials? Check. So I went to the bar tonight to order a pizza and salad for take out and had a beer while waiting. After 45 minutes of waiting I asked the bartender to check on my food. He returned immediately with both pizza and salad. I suspected that all three behind the bar (and it was slow) just forgot. I asked if it was just sitting there the whole time and he said no it just came out. I opened the pizza box when I got to the car and the cheese had already hardened and the pizza was cold. Furthermore, I ordered sun dried tomatoes on the pizza and they were more like canned stewed tomatoes, which are gross in my opinion. They were far from sun dried. Very disappointing pizza. What can I say? Freetail was open early to help my hubby watch the World Cup on our vacation to San Antonio, they have great beer AND food and they let me plug in my laptop to an outlet at the bar. (Free wifi for supportive soccer widows that would rather play online than watch the World Cup! Whee!) I'd be insane to NOT rate them five stars! Brewery that sells pizza, need I say more? I would say I'm a bit of a pizza fanatic and this place did not disappoint. It was loaded with so much cheese that when you took a slice and recorded it, it would be suitable for a commercial. Just to give you a mental image. Just as a tip, in case you like bacon (who doesn't), add some to your pizza. It's freaking delicious. Not that dried out bacon crumbles so it adds a lot of flavor. On top of that of course I must mention the beer since it's a brewery. Their selection and variety of beers made in house is impressive. Something for everyone. Their Danky Legg IPA is my favorite but overall a 7 out of 10 on my scale. But hey, great pizza and good fresh made beer, you can't go wrong. read more

Love this place. Have been going there for almost 5.5 years whenever I'm in town! Pizza, brisket queso and grilled cheese with 2 cheeses (you pick your own) are great! Meet up with some yelpers to try this place. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I found a couple that I enjoyed. By friends who are huge beer snobs loved this place. They found quite a few different beers they liked and even more they wanted to try. Foodwise, I was very pleased with Freetail. I tried the BBQ chicken pizza and it was delicious. I've had some pizza with red onions before where the onions are so huge that they're not cooked fully. Here, the onions were slivered and cooked perfectly to compliment the chicken and sauce. Freetail's brewed beer is delicious and the taste is very different. I always get the original free tail beer; it is not too blonde nor too dark. The pizzas are really good. I ate here tonight with my girlfriend and her parents. The inside of the place looks industrial as it is very open with lots of seating and has the ductwork showing. Besides that there are some kegs and casks on one side, a large flat screen on the other side with all of there beers and myriad other tvs throughout the space with sports on. I decided to start off with a sampler of their beers and was excited to get two IPA's and two imperial stouts. All of it was good with one of the stouts being smokey and both IPA's being hoppy. For our food we decided to start off kid evening by getting the green chili and artichoke goat cheese dip. It came served with a side of hot pitas and salsa. The dip itself was awesome, slightly sour from the cheese with a little heat from the chili and paired perfectly with the salsa. The only thing I was missing was the artichokes but it still tasted awesome. For my dinner entree I decided to have the green chile Mac and cheese topped by bacon while the rest of my party got salads. My Mac and cheese was gooey and good but was missing something. I think that I expected more spice after the dip had some more. I was also able to taste the brisket from my girlfriends salad. It was tender and fell apart easily with a good smoked taste. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely head back here again. They had twelve beers of their own beers on draft which was awesome and I enjoyed both the food and space. read more

My boyfriend is a craft beer enthusiast so he is always satisfied with a pint or two. We've been here twice. Last visit was over 3 years ago. At both visits, I was impressed with the in-home brews. A nice selection of beer styles and flavors. Beer flights are a fun way to discover new beers. At first visit, the food was majorly disappointing; hence, our delay in returning. At recent visit, we went to join a crowd of like-minded college football fans. Server was great. Food, though typical bar fair, was markedly improved (still not great, but much better). Why only 4 stars? Because the wine list (yes, I CAN read "Brewing Co.") truly stinks and because the food does not stand out. Still, a nice fun place. One of our favorite spots in San Antonio. Want great pizza and great beer, then you need to come to Freetail. It's our favorite pizza place in the city and the craft beers just put it over the top. Everything I have ever had here was delicious. Never a complaint. Their servers are always friendly and prompt on serving beers. They also have TVs everywhere so you can come hang out and watch whatever game may be on that day/night. Look for their specials too. They do a great date night special where you get a pitcher and a medium one topping pizza for around $20 depending on what type of beer you get. We also love their pint night. Everything is always fresh and cooked perfectly. This place is our #1 when we have guests from out of town. Can't ask for anything more. read more
