Onion rings here are the biggest I've ever seen.. Literally could put my lower arm through them so should be called "onion bracelets" lol. They were overly breaded and not the tastiest I've had. The frozen Irish coffee was good but also not top notch. So why 5 stars? The live music talent on the night we went was incredible. Fiancee and I just exited a metal concert and wanted a couple drinks. The acoustic guitarist here had a very good voice, played so many nostalgic 90s songs, and masterfully transitioned from song to song while weaving them together seamlessly with similar bars. Kudos to this guy's vocals and to Waxy's for having the vision to invite a talented musician to play here, and as a result elevated our entire experience. read more

This is probably the 6th or 7th time I've come here over the past 12 years. I come here once a year for work. So depending on meetings and company I may or may not come in. They have a great selection of whisky's and usually make a really good black and tan. Today I sat at the bar, I was greeted right away and got a beer in 20 secs. I've had the fish and chips here which were good. Bangers and mash I've had and enjoyed, Shepard pie is pretty good. Today I went with the BBQ burger. Food came out in about 10 mins from placing my order. Not bad, not great. My rating on the bbq burger. They did not ask me how I wanted it prepared, it was pretty much well done. The bun was a little hard, almost stale. There was not much bbq sauce on the bbq burger. With all the toppings, I'd give the burger 5 of 10. The hard bread took away from it for sure. I always like to try just the patty without anything on it to see how restaurants prepare their patties. It was about what I expected for a well done burger. Not much flavor, it tasted like well cooked ground round. I'd give it a 3.5. The fries were so so, I like fries more on the crispy side. These were more like thick steak fries, soft and limp. They were seasoned with salt and pepper. Not bad, not great. The beer I had... had an odd smell. It tasted ok, but I think the glass itself may have not been the cleanest. Hoping I don't get sick from a dirty glass. The bartender was nice enough to let me try their frozen Irish coffee. It was surprisingly delicious, like a boozy ice cream. It just seemed like a full glass would be too much. So I got a black and tan, which was good. If I was eating just this visit, I'd probably be between a 2-3, food was meh, and the dirty glass didn't help. If I include all my other visits I'm at 3-4, since this most recent experience I had to say I'm closer to a 3 than a 4. read more

This is an Irish Pub so one would expect good fish and chips. I was asked if I wanted extra tartar sauce. What I was given was not tartar sauce at all. The fries were not only old, but tasted like freezer burn. I ordered a margarita on ice and what I received tasted like watered down lemonade. When I asked the bartender if she made a margarita and she asked me if it was not strong enough she would have to charge me ti make it again with a double shot. Came across this neat place while walking the river walk. It was a hot day (90+ end of Oct) so the frozen drink got me interested. We never went inside but found a table on the patio. Great view to people watch while we sat and cooled off. The service is pretty good but hard to judge since it was afternoon and the place was only 1/4 full. The drinks were very touristy prices which I should've expected, but it was a nice little oasis when everything was closing down at 11 other reviews say the food is good, but I just had a Jamison frozen margarita which when it was hot as the devil's balls came in handy to cool me down. Seems like there was a bunch of locals in their service industry people getting off after work and wanting a nice cold Guinness, the vibe was laid-back. They had live music and everybody was just kind of chilling, enjoying their night a lot less chaotic than the other more popular bars. I'd recommend swinging in if you're in San Antonio. read more

I came here with a group of friends on a week night because it was one of the few places on the river walk that was still serving food past midnight. We walked in and didn't see a host for awhile so we waited to see if one would come out later. After awhile, a waitress (didn't get her name) came out and yelled loudly that she was the only person working so it would be awhile and everything would take a long time. While it's understandable that it's stressful to be understaffed on a busier night, we found this to be really off putting because her tone basically sounded like she would've preferred if we just left. There's nicer ways to let us know if you're understaffed at the moment so things might be slow. Nevertheless, we decided to stay and seated ourselves. She took our order and while we waited, we saw some people from another table go up to the bar where there was now a man working. He yelled at them aggressively and rudely saying he was busy (so they walked away) which caused a scene because everyone could hear and see this interaction. I get that the single waitress was running around and stressed so that contributed to her demeanor earlier, but this bartender was just a full on asshole. Overall, this place is understaffed, the few staff they do have that we encountered yelled at their customers, AND the food we got wasn't even good. There are tons of other places on the Riverwalk to try instead, so skip this place. read more

There weren't many customers when I walked into waxy O'Connor's. And that should've been my first clue. The place smelled of dirty water and bleach. That should've been my second clue. But the beer was cold. So what could go wrong?. The beef stew is really more like gravy. I had exactly two small pieces of beef in my big bowl. Definitely not worth $22. There are better places to eat along the Riverwalk. This is not one of them. The servers were friendly, so I'm generously giving this restaurant two stars. read more

Then, when I looked at fish and chips, it was one less piece. Strike two. This review is primarily based on bar experience while visiting San Antonio. Came here after dinner 2 nights in a row. Only food ordered was the mozzarella sticks because we saw lots of people ordering it - it was ok, nothing extraordinary about it. There is ample variety of drink options at the bar. Been to about 8 bars and none of them had Malibu rum - so far, this is the only place which has it. My drink of choice is Malibu Pineapple so I was pleased about this. Service - Bartenders are nice and friendly. Ambiance - on the Riverwalk. We enjoyed listening to Joe Walmsley - he's great! Place closes at 2am unlike most bars which close at 11pm or 12midnight. read more

My husband and I were looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite to eat. We had just arrived in town and were walking along the riverwalk with our dog. We saw this place was dog friendly and decided to give it a shot. Expecting to be sat outside, we were very surprised to find out that they were dog friendly inside as well. We were sat at the very back of the restaurant in a booth, which ended up being perfect for us. We ordered a spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer. They were only serving their late night menu when we arrived, so I can't speak to their regular menu - there were enough options for the three of us to choose from and we all agreed it was a great choice! Here's what I can say about Waxy's: they have a great staff. We had two great servers as we waited way too long for our little spinach cheese app. The thing is, they kept us engaged in conversation, and they even told us what happened in the kitchen to slow down the service. They were awesome. Honesty & transparency are traits that more restaurants should embrace. We are very understanding when we are looped in. As for the food itself, the spinach cheese dip needed some seasoning, and the chips they use are straight out of the 80s, though I'm not sure what better options there are in the "chip" realm for this dip. I mean that nicely. Although it looked like it had potential, it just missed the target.
