The stretcher bars that I ordered were shipped loose in the box. Due to lack of packaging, there were many shards of wood in the box and more than half of the bars I ordered had splintered ends. When I emailed "customer service" I received a reply stating that they are usually packed tightly and that they would "find out who packed my order and speak to them.." Okay... so thankfully the canvas covers up all of the splintered ends. Then as I am fitting bars together, I notice that a couple of pieces were not cut accurately and the frame is a wobbly mess. Again, I emailed the company. It's been a week and I have not received a reply. I had to use a wood chisel to correct the openings on the bars. I just wanted to write a quick review and warn people about buying stretcher bars from this seller. Their product (at least what they sold me 2 years ago) is useless. All warped, miscut, bars won't even fit each other. I bought close to $500 worth of bars and threw them away, because shipping it back would cost about $180 and since their customer service is close to non-existent I didn't want to spend more and risk not getting anything back... Do yourself a favor, deal with local stores. read more

I am concerned with my order at his point? I placed an order on April 26th, after calling several times and leaving messages. I got an email saying it would be shipped on May 16th? I got an email giving me the shipping company and tracking #. Needless to say, the website says the tracking number is not valid. When I called the shipping company, they have no order coming to my zip code? I have had to call and leave another message on compnay phone, sent email.. I love French Canvas and am distressed they are no longer in business. For years they made THE FINEST canvases for artists all over the world. I live in San Francisco and they shipped lovingly prepared, enormous gessoed canvases. The canvases alone were beautiful objects and an inspiration. I'd always hoped they would help me construct a kite I would paint and fly with my grandchild at Chrissy Field. Now I have a grandson and a need a balsa wood creation with light weight material and a large linen canvas to complete a project but there is French Canvas no longer exists. Not surprised to find they are out of business. I had to return a third of the stretchers I bought several years ago because they were ill packed and many of that third were broken or splintered. I took a photo with explanation written on each piece. They agree to replace the broken ones. I suggested they stuff bubble wrap in at least one end to pad the package. When the replacements came there was a thin small 8"x8"piece of small bubble wrap in one end. Gee, were they mocking my suggestions? Obviously they were. I gave up. Very rude. A few of the stretchers were warped. Most were fine. Ones that were fine were very sturdy. The product had the potential to be great as none of the stretchers were finger jointed pieces cobbled together as many are nowadays; they were all full wood pieces. Customer service sucked. They should have shipped them in containers with depressed ends like other companies do. read more

I own a frame shop and when i need quality bars I use French Canvas. I've never had a problem and I've used them several times.

Customer Service is terrible and the owner is unprofessional. I gave them a piece of very important art and the owner, Rob, said he'd call me back that same day to give me the exact quote. He never called me back (luckily it was a smaller piece), so I decided to call him about 2 weeks into waiting (I wasn't sure how long it'd take them to stretch the piece). I decided to call them and left a message. I did not get a return phone call until 10:30 PM, which I found very unprofessioanl. I asked if I could receive a discount considering there was no communication about my piece. He gave me a minimal discount (I think it was like 15%)--I feel that it should have been free of charge. read more

I ordered a frame from frenchcanvas.com on 11/30/2013; I did not receive any sort of information about my order, other than a confirmation of payment. I finally decided to contact them on 12/14/2013; I received an email the next day stating that an employee named Tana would be informing me on the status of my order within the next day or two. I never received any sort of contact from Tana. Finally, on 01/02/2014, I decided to contact French Canvas yet again. I was informed that they had been closed for two days for New Years and that they would get an answer for me that day. It is now 3:00 pm on 01/03/2014 and I still have not received any information, much less a courtesy call or email. Don't get me wrong, the prices are great; however, some merchandise in exchange for the money would be better. I will never again be purchasing anything from this company, and would recommend the same for all prospective buyers. read more

One of the main reasons why I rated French Canvas so low is because of their very poor, almost confrontational, customer service. If you can even call it that. It is, as some of the other reviews states, horrible. As for the canvases, I've seen better. Much better. They are average to below average in construction, and sometimes the craftsmanship can be lacking in terms of attention to detail. read more

I have been purchasing oversized heavy duty 2.5 inch stretched canvases from French Canvas for several years now. I live in California and these large canvases need shipping and packaging. I can tell you that the quality of the wood and the solid construction is excellent. I really mean excellent. At first (years ago) I experienced some frustration with the slowness of arrival of the product, however I took it upon myself to communicate with Rob via e-mail, which is a format that he immediately answers and found him to be a wonderful man, very helpful, gracious and attentive to my concerns. One large order had a missing canvas, I communicated that to him, and he immediately took care of it. Regarding the slowness of orders, just take a minute, communicate via e-mail about when you need something, Rob will address it. I like to find a solution to my concerns . E-mail and communication is the solution in this case. I find that the quality of my canvases, secure and good packaging, the reasonable cost, the goodness of character of Rob makes it worthwhile to take a moment to communicate via e-mail vs. phone calls.
