Given the name, I wasn't expecting Fresh Bean Coffee Co. to have boba, but I saw them offering the drink during the Made in Michigan Festival in Allen Park. After doing some more research, I saw that the owner was from Vietnam and also owned several drink shops there. That definitely had me intrigued and I decided to go to their main store location to try it out. Sweet Tiger Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, w/ Boba ($6.95) - This is prepared with more like a traditional Vietnamese Coffee vs. a normal milk tea. They have a premixed mixture of tea, condensed milk, and creamer, which they add additional sugar syrup to. Since the boba is soaked in brown sugar, that adds extra sweetness as well. As a result, even at 50% sweet, this drink was very sweet, probably similar to 100% at other shops. Because of the addition of condensed milk, the drink feels quite rich and decadent. Although to one detriment - all the sweet milky flavor completely covers up any semblance of tea taste. I actually ended up brewing some cheap black tea at home and added it to the drink. The drink isn't filled to the brim - they leave about a half inch gap to the top and the tiger stripes (made from carefully ladling the boba and brown sugar syrup) aren't nearly as well defined as what you would see from specialty boba shops. The boba itself is just okay - pretty hard and firm without a great chew. To be fair, this review is only for the boba - and it's not bad. It just didn't stand out to me all that much, other than the usage of condensed milk. I'm sure the coffee here is fantastic given the other reviews and I bet the Vietnamese coffee is solid. read more

The work day brought me to this area and I'm glad I stopped by. There was a group of seniors enjoying the early morning with their newspapers and coffee. I had the Vietnamese coffee and it was delicious. The barista explained what made it Vietnamese and he did some voodoo back there and prepared it for me. We found this great place not far from our hotel. The coffee has great taste and the the staff is very helpful. We visited here multiple times when we either needed a pick me up or wanted to try something new. The place itself looks to be a work in progress, but it still has some nice tables and a great little outside seating area. read more

Was disappointed about a boba tea shop that doesn't have green tea. Apparently, as one other reviewer said, they have a pre-mix of black tea that they just add different flavored syrups. Some else in our party wanted an iced Vietnamese coffee and they were unable to make that as well. There were 5 in our party and all we ended up with was 1 small black coffee. I made the mistake of also getting a jasmine milk tea, the boba was gross and rubbery. The gals at the register weren't much help, I asked what a "tiger milk tea" was and one of the girls just said "it's tea mixed with stuff" ummm ok? I really enjoy Fresh Bean Coffee! I stop in here usually about once a week for a lavender iced latte. Their espresso is usually pulled really well, only once or twice have I noticed it a bit off. They do their own roasting here, too. Not sure if they serve their own roasted beans as their drinks or if they just sell them. I'd like to ask but the baristas seem not to keen on sparking a conversation- which is fine. That's why this is my grab & go spot. I don't have many complaints and continue to come back, so they must be doing something right. :) read more

The coffee lives up to the name--it is fresh. I hope to be back soon, though I was disappointed in the espresso drink I got. The problem is just that the milk was frothed too much for a flat white and heated to scalding. Even so, I'm optimistically committed to their potential to be the best coffee shop in Downriver. Next time I'll try the teas or a coffee without steamed milk. This coffee shop is a great place for stopping in or staying. YES!!!!!! Finally, a good coffee spot in Southgate (Downriver)! I have been watching to see when this spot would open figuring that it was just another lousy spot that will close down quickly because its not that great and someone trying to turn a quick dollar and do bad product. WOW, I was wrong. I am used to buying Madcap and brewing it myself and or going to one of the locations (Detroit, Grand Rapids). Since I have an extremely high regard for Madcap I base everything on what that is like. I would say that this coffee is right there with Madcap. Honest to goodness, I loved the taste and the experience. I hate coffee that is too bitter (Starbucks) and or coffee that is too watered down (Tim Hortons). If you are reading this and haven't tried this coffee, you need to get out and get some. I highly recommend it. Hopefully in time they can offer good food options. But dont let that keep you from coming out and getting this coffee. read more

I regularly buy the fresh roasted whole coffee beans here so I can grind my own. The beans are truly fresh, and the coffee I make is wonderful. However, they occasionally don't have any beans bagged up ready to be sold. Once, the clerk bagged up some especially for me. I appreciated that. This past week, a different clerk just blankly stared at me and didn't offer to bag any. That was frustrating. I'm now searching for another source for beans as an alternate. I had a great experience here and the drinks where great. My 9 year old wanted to try Boba Tea after hearing about it on YouTube. When we went in the guy behind the counter seen my daughter's indecision and asked if she ever had it, she said no, so he made her a tiny one to try. She hated it so he let her try the Bursting Boba, it's made with fruit instead of tea. She loved it and got one. I bought two other drinks for the wife and other kids, all of them where delicious. I tried this place the other day and it was really good! I tried their espresso frappe which is their version of a Tim Hortons ice capp but so much better! I have to say I absolutely love this place it's very cute very modern and they supposed to relax and get a good cup of coffee, I enjoyed my cold brew it was very smooth the staff is very friendly I'll be back to have my cup of joe, I know they just opened and they're doing an excellent job and I know they're trying new things I think the bus will get better as people get to know it.
