I have yet to try the meal kits, but I am really a fan of the produce, snacks, drinks, dairy and energy bars they have to offer. I have also visited their store and there is a different assortment online than in store so it's a different experience and I encourage others to visit the store as well. The herb shelf was so cool- I only wish the herbs were labeled so amateur cooks like me will be able to easily identify which herbs are what and can learn too. I like how I can refer friends where I provide them a discount and I can also earn credits when they sign up. An area of improvement would be if I could drop off the bag at a nearby hub (just like I can pick up at a nearby hub) instead of having to go all the way downtown to return it. I know I can have it picked up at the next delivery and the time limit they offer to not be charged yet is a long time, so it's not an issue but always offering more options to customers is a good idea. Fresh City Farms has been a life saver in these times of need for many thousands of households in the GTA. With so many of us staying at home we are very relied on services like FCF to deliver us much needed weekly produce and groceries to keep us fed. They are always timely with their deliveries and have never been later than they said they were going to be. They give you a wide range (till midnight of the day you are supposed to get your items) and if you plan ahead properly and make their delivery schedule work for you then you should be golden. I also love that they give the produce in a cardboard box that is easily recyclable or can be used for storage. Lastly their products are very high quality. Our household was never a real organic food household due to the price point but FCF makes it very affordable to get high quality ingredients and raw organic vegetables, which make you feel better after eating your meal. Joining Fresh City Farms is one of the best food-related decisions I have ever made. Having tried other meal services and been disappointed with the overall variety and quality of the food, I was finally ready to start cooking at home during the week. My stipulations were: * Must be fresh and preferably contain organic produce * Must be reasonably priced ($10 a meal per person, or under) and provide home delivery service * Must be able to cook the meals in under an hour I gave Fresh City Farms a try back in August and haven't looked back. The produce is always fresh and of the highest quality. The few times there have been issues with produce quality, the team has been quick to respond and resolve the issue by applying an account credit. All of the meals have been well thought out, creative and used ingredients I wouldn't normally cook with (quinoa, tempeh, rice noodles). The variety is also second-to-none, in four months I have had only a few repeat meals. The rest have been brand new. I also love how I no longer need to go to the grocery store three or four times a week. The meals are delivered to my door in cooler bags. The meats are frozen and delivered on ice, ready to go straight into my freezer. I love how each meal bag is portioned as it completely avoids wastage - if the recipe requires two eggs and a half an onion, that's what comes in the bag. My pet peeve was buying huge portions of vegetables and dairy and throwing it away since it usually went bad before I had a chance to use it all. The one thing I wasn't entirely convinced about was the pantry service, where you can pick individual grocery items to add to your bag. I found they were more expensive than buying locally, and didn't really add much value other than the convenience factor. The portions (cheese, milk, eggs) were also quite small for the price paid, but I guess this comes with most organic produce. If you are on the fence about this service, I highly recommend you try it out. Great company. The produce is always in good condition. Tons of add-on options (milk, eggs, pantry items) and a do-not-send list option. Customer service has been amazing so far. I've had one quality issue with an item in my bag, and they credited me the amount, no questions asked. It was very easy to suspend the service for a week when I was away and resume it when I returned. I pick up my bag from Ideal Coffee on Ossington, and this week I forgot to go on my pick-up day. Last year my fiancé and I went to a canning workshop at Patagonia where one of the owners from Fresh City introduced us to their box program. We began subscribing to the weekly delivery program this spring and are loving it so far. Every week is a fun surprise and it's forcing us to eat healthier and more locally - we're also getting more creative with what we're cooking! The bag comes with a good variety of fruits and veggies and is definitely enough produce for the both of us for the week. Signing up online was easy (they take PayPal or Cheque) and we were happy to see that we can skip deliveries in case we go up to the cottage for a few weeks this summer. I had a weekly veggie box that I got delivered each week to my apartment back in Vancouver so I thought I'd give this service a try. I was thoroughly underwhelmed. The veggies were inconsistent in quantity week to week (I found that some weeks there was a good amount and the next it was five pieces). The produce often looked like it was not fresh and had dried out a bit, while other things had bruises and whatnot when they arrived. I will say that they were very good about honouring return policies for the first week, but I didn't want to have to write in every week, which is a hassle, so after a really bad week, just decided to cancel it. I think it's a great effort, but more of an effort needs to be made to either source local fresh or get it to customers sooner. read more

I have previously ordered their salad jars and really enjoyed the experience and product. I decided to try out their meal kits and ordered 5 vegetarian meals since I had such a good previous experience with Fresh City Farms. I was also excited to support a local business during COVID. Unfortunately I will NOT be ordering from them again. Within 5-days half of the produce went bad from the remaining meal kits, rendering the recipes useless. What is the point of purchasing a meal kit when you can't use all of the ingredients?!?! Additionally, my order was delivered to an OLD address that was on file, however they were able to charge the correct credit card when the information was updated at the same time as my delivery address. When I followed up with their customer service that I did not receive my food, I was not offered any reimbursement when I specifically ordered from them to NOT have to go out. They did not offer to re-deliver or pick-up the food from the old address. This was a horrible experience. read more

I subscribe and try many food delivery services in the city. So when Fresh City Farms sent me a $15 voucher in the mail, I was excited to try it. I like the idea of having already prepared dinners once or twice a week ready for me after a long day, so I purchased the deconstructed salmon roll and 2 butter chicken meal jars. 1) Having to pick up the bag from a local pickup point if you don't spend a minimum of $65/week is slightly inconvenient. But, having to drop off the bags too afterwards is what really irks me. Why cant they use disposable packaging to save from 2 trips. 2) The deconstructed salmon roll jar was 60-70% brown rice, and not much else. And, when eating the salmon I encountered 2 bones. There was also a lack of flavour, I was hoping for something more like a poke bowl, and basically had some rice with a side of salmon. For the price, I could have picked something up nearby that would have been better. 3) I was really hoping that the butter chicken would be a hit for my boyfriend and I, since we love getting butter chicken as takeout. I understand this was going to be a healthier take on things. The jar looked delicious, and had a good amount of protein. However, looks can be deceiving. The sauce tasted like a poorly executed curry vs. a butter chicken. Lots of chickpea and ginger flavour, I don't think any tomato base was even used. It was very dry, and after two bites, we trashed both of our meals, and opted for some frozen meals (that LUCKILY I had stashed for a lazy day). Maybe their grocery delivery would yield a better experience. But, based on my experience with the meal jars, I would be hesitant to try. Received my first bag today. I think I scared the nice delivery man with my enthusiasm (sorry, Joe!). I am a shift worker. We have issues eating healthy. Also a vegan of 4 months and navigating that landscape. FCF is the best thing that's happened to me since I started that journey. It's now been over a year that we have been members , and i still love it just as much! the produce is fresh and delicious, and as always, if anything goes wrong they rectify it quickly! I feel very valued as a customer, it always makes my day when the packers write a little note on my packing slip or throw in something extra. This is not just a company that cares about making money, they really do care about their customers! i used to get my delivery at a pickup hub, but a couple of months back they stopped being a pickup hub, so i was switched to home delivery. It was very informative and interesting, and the people who ran it were more than happy to answer my silly questions during and after the workshop. What I liked the most was the fact that they really understood the challenges of the climate and city we live in, and were able to give great advice for everyone, from home owners to tiny condo dwellers alike. Though the workshop was mostly aimed for newbies, I still learned some really great pieces of info. a few of us signed up for box delivery and we have yet to have a week without something missing or already spoilt. This week's surprise was a half dozen rotten eggs. Hmmm from lemons that are mouldy within a week, to wrinkled apples, dried out oranges, soft and mushy potatoes and now green on the inside "farm fresh" eggs. I have never seen food turn so quickly in my life. I don't think this has anything to do with items being organic, more susceptible to spoiling and/or less than perfect, but rather poor food handling and perhaps purchases of end of the line/past the best before date organics from the food terminal. I was eager to support this organization (we signed on very early), but these rotten eggs are really the last straw. Do yourself a favour and just buy from your local farmers market. read more

We had signed up for Fresh City about 18 months ago, and really, really liked it for at least the first year. The produce, the variety and quality, the delivery and customer service were all great (5 stars back then). Unfortunately, over that last few months the quality of the produce we received has consistently declined, so much that we finally decided to pull the plug on it. Produce that was nowhere close to being ready to be picked, or already started spoiling in our delivery bag, to produce that was simply sicklish: From one case maybe once a month we went to something being obviously wrong in every single bag, and somehow I figure that this might be due to FreshCity Farm's success (and I really do wish for them to be successful), and them not being able to handle the increased volume, both in terms of sourcing acceptable produce and handling it. I might give them another go in the future, to see whether things have improved. In the meantime I prefer to buy all my organic/local produce myself. read more

I have been with fresh city farms for over two years and overall I have been extremely satisfied with their service. There have been mishaps and growing pains along the way, but their customer service has always stood out and has only left me feeling even better about their work after issues have been resolved (missed deliveries, subpar items within delivery). I really think these guys are doing an excellent job, and they keep getting better. I would strongly recommend them for anyone. My impression is that there is a bit of a premium you pay for the product, but I still think they are relatively competitive and the quality of the product you receive is well worth it. read more

I love that I can easily put future deliveries on hold if I'm going to be away, or if I simply don't want one that week. As a single person, having organics delivered has been a great way to force myself to eat more fresh foods. I suscribed it about 6 weeks back and am VERY HAPPY with the quality of produce. Home delivery option is excellent. Prices are liitle higher than Farmers Market by about 10% but still worth saving time and effort. But for this reason I would have given it 5 Stars. Year round service is another great feature. I have paid $1,000 advance and got $60 credit + $19 for first box as new subsriber. We are a family of 5 adults. A large/regular box each of vegetables and fruits needs some suplemental buying of individual items like onions, tomatos, garlic, frozen vegetables specific to Indian needs such as okra, karela, beans etc from local stores. Very well organized and informative website makes changes in weekly order very convenient. Try different combinations like large boxe of vegetable and fruit combo or individual large boxes and see what suits your needs and budget best. Leaving it to them to select the produce in the CSA box makes you learn about and try different varieties of nutrient dense foods. Meat is missing here which I buy from Fresh from Farms at 350 Donlands Ave. Free Range eggs can be bought from Fresh City Farms ($6.25/Doz) and Free Run eggs from Fresh from Farms ($4.15/Doz). I admit that I wasn't sure that it was a service that I needed (as I live a stone's throw from a bevy of great fruit & vegetable stands, and a weekly farmer's market), but once I started I was hooked. Everything - from the lovely ritual of picking up my bag from my coffee shop next door, to scanning the included recipe card for cooking ideas, and of course, the unpacking of deliciously dirt-y (in a good way) vegetables straight from the earth - has been a delight. It's great to know that despite my busy schedule, I can always count on a well stocked fridge. I ordered 3 meal kits. One beef based, one salmon-based, and one smoked salmon-based. Although they warn you that the meats and fish all come frozen, I was not prepared for the lack of flavour that the freezing entailed. The beef tasted like cardboard, though my son said it tasted vaguely like lamb. The salmon did not taste like salmon but had more of a whitefish flavour. The smoked salmon was fine and it is the only reason I din't zero-star this service. The portion sizes though, were mercifully small so that we did not have to waste much of what was left on our plates. For a place that calls itself 'Fresh City' I cannot for the life of me understand why the fish and meats aren't fresh; or even freshly frozen -- the beef we cooked on November 23rd had been frozen since mid-July of this year. This company offers weekly deliveries, so there is no reason that anything should be frozen. They maintain it is for convenience. But it is not for their customer's convenience since it takes at least a day for the stuff to thaw. This is a cost cutting measure on the company's part to limit the amount of waste. This would be fine if their prices reflected it. But I paid a premium and I expected a premium product. If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, then you might have better luck. But if you enjoy eating meat, there are definitely better alternatives. Finally, the recipes were simple and easy to follow but since I had to do all of the cutting, there was really very little in the way of convenience. I also order a fruit bundle. The results were mixed. The grapes were exceptional. The apples were apples, though small. The pears and bananas arrived unripened. And the peels on the oranges were so hard that they were impossible to take peel. I would have expected that the fruit would have been much better given that the store was making the selections on my behalf. On the whole a disappointing experience regardless of the price. I've been getting fresh produce from Fresh City for about a year and a half and I love them. I get the right amount of organic veg and fruit to last me the week, and have recently started getting a couple of recipe kits to make my evenings easier. The kits are great when you're pressed for time and are too tired to think about what to make for dinner. My favourite so far has been the Moroccan chicken and raisin quinoa. The service is prompt and they're quick to comp you if a mistake is made. Plus they're growing and seem to have new stuff every week. I'm buying less and less at the store and getting more and more delivered through Fresh City. During my various stints in Toronto over the last couple years I've had only positive experiences with Fresh City. Having lived in California, I've seen my share of "CSAs". I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to find a CSA like Fresh City in Toronto, but even more impressed to see they have taken it one step further and incorporated (and promoted) urban farming. Not to mention the fact that pulling off an urban farming CSA is a lot more difficult in a Toronto climate than a California one. Pretty disappointed in their customer service. I had a delivery scheduled for Sunday, never showed up, no email from the company, nothing. When I tried to reach out to them on Monday via email and phone, there was no answer and I couldn't get through to them at all. Finally received my delivery 4 days later and still haven't received a response on why my delivery was delayed... if this was any other sort of delivery it wouldn't matter, but this is a food delivery which I am dependent on for my meals. read more

TL;DR Been with them for over a month. Consistently ordered the Omnivore MEAL KITS plan (3 meals/wk). Great produce, recipes, portions. Recipe instructions are unlcear at times. You're prepping and cleaning up after yourself. Price roughly equivalent to eating at a fast food restaurant. Happy with the results so far, we'll be continuing with them. INTRO When we started this, I thought there would be problems. I thought that we'd try ordering MEAL KITS for 1 week and probably cancel, it's just a fad. Turns out there weren't that many issues. THE GOOD: - Produce sent was surpisingly good. Maybe the carrots were a little on the dry side, but wash and peel and they're fine. Avacadoes so far were just right in terms of ripeness. Meat/Fish was fresh and of decent quality. - Portion sizes have been consistently good, a full meal for each person. - The fact that I can pick this up at a Penguin Pickup rather than have it dropped off at my door. I live in an apartment building, and leaving packages outside my door means it's a 50/50 chance I'll get the food. Sure they have a return/refund policy for that, but at the end of that phone call, I'm still hungry. So I'd rather pick-up. I checked many places like Fresh City Farms out, and no one really seemed to have that option yet. Pity the Penguin Pickups are far and few between - even for the GTA. But still more convenient for me. - Our recycling bin isn't filling up as much (unexpected bonus). - We aren't cleaning out expired or rotten food from our fridge (another unexpected bonus). - We don't have to spend as much time grocery shopping. - We don't have as much pressure to come up with some creative idea for dinner, meal planning is much easier (yet another unexpected bonus). - We've naturally put more emphasis on eating at home, together as a family. - We've enjoyed the prepared sauce and spice mixtures. THE BAD - You do the prep, so you need to be stocked for that. Olive oil (i've never seen a recipe from them that called for any other kind of oil), basic salt and pepper. Pans, skillets, baking sheets, parchment paper, measuring cups/spoons, mixing bowls etc. - You do the cleanup. - The recipe card instructions are not very clear. If you're like me, you don't read everything through first, you read as you go along. These instructions don't lend themselves to that at all. On some recipes you'll find early on it says 'now add the spice from the packet, mix and cook'. So I'll add the spice from the packet, mix and cook. Then, 5 or 6 lines down, 'now add the rest of the spice from that spice packet to this next part of the dish'. What rest of the spice? It never stated I was to keep some back! I just chucked that all in a pot and cooked it 2 minutes ago. - If your recipe involves potatoes, you're going to get the tiniest potatoes (which I love). The bad thing about that is when the recipe calls for you peeling those tiny things. Then grating/shredding those even tinier peeled potatoes. CONCLUSION This probably isn't going to be a fad for us. I've crunched the numbers on this and we spend roughly the same amount per meal as we would if we went out to a cheap fast-food place. I think we can safely say that we're saving money on food waste. I signed up for this service and was quite excited, despite others' reviews. We received our first 'box' (it was actually in a bag) and were quite disappointed. Due to the weather, a number of items had to be substituted - which was completely understandable. However, the 'free flowers' promotion failed to deliver and when I inquired, I was told that the promotion was over now, but they could add some extra produce next week, but could not offer me flowers. Seeing as they offer flowers as an add on, I don't know why they couldn't just send flowers the next week. The quality of the actual produce was mediocre. Maybe I'm spoiled living in downtown Toronto, but the spinach smelled like it had gone rotten as soon as we took it out of the bag, and we soon discovered that large chunks of it had. The remaining pieces were ok, but all looked like they were about to go rotten and needed to be eaten immediately. We regularly eat organic and visit local farmers markets, and I've never experienced this before. It made me think that these 'boxes' were prepared much farther in advance than I was lead to believe. We ordered the large fruit and veg box, which mentioned it feeds 2 -4 people. The quantities were quite small and for many of the dishes I would make with those items, I would need to supplement with additional produce. For example, we received one beet with no greens attached. I was looking forward to making a beet quinoa, but needed to buy more beets to make up the 1 cup of chopped beets for the recipe. I'm glad I was only relying on the box to feed my husband and I, because it would never feed 4 people unless you rarely eat veggies. I cancelled our subscription after this first box, both due to the quantities and the quality. I had high expectations and wish this had come close to delivering on them. After starting with fresh city during one of their promo offers, I have now been with them for over a year. They consistently put together a great blend of groceries at a fantastic price. I have done this with a few other companies, but here are some ways I found fresh city better: - produce was always packed and delivered carefully. Even tender produce is consistently in good condition. - the one time a product was damaged, a refund credit was put on our account for the loss with minimal hassle - the web interface for managing your produce is super convenient: delivery holds are simple, modifying your order is a snap - you can add regular pantry items to be included in your bag for repeat or single delivery. We will often add onions or garlic to our orders, and have milk delivered weekly (biweekly deliveries of specific items are an option too) - recipe cards and produce info is included with each bag to help you figure out how to prepare some of the produce that may be new to you - I really appreciate that they are using plots of land that would otherwise be unused, such as lots designated for future development that are sitting empty; even downtown! - frequent community gatherings such as farm tours and BBQ's - pre-delivery emails are sent a few days prior, giving a heads up as to what is in your delivery so you can plan ahead Some things to keep in mind if this is new to you: - the price is low because the farmer's produce is guaranteed to be sold as it is grown. This means the food doesn't sit on shelves or end up rotting and being wasted. To me it makes giving up the choice of food quite attractive in return for the low cost and high efficiency - lots of leafy greens and sprouts will be in your bag all year because they are simple to grow quickly and take up small plots of land for the amount of harvest - local food is fresher and, of course, supports the local economy - it can actually help you plan your food for the week, because it helps you narrow the options to certain ingredients without your cooking getting boring Some specifics I am hoping to see for future development: - larger delivery zone - other delivery options tailored to apartment building dwellers who work daytimes Overall: consistent service and great quality produce. We've been with Fresh City Farms for about a year now, and it's so wonderful! We focus only on getting the Local Veg bin, which is always full of great produce. It's super easy to substitute and add items you don't want so you get a bag full of delicious, fresh, usable veg every week! Being able to add local eggs and coffee is a lifesaver as well. I'm a big fan of ordering organic and local food, just wouldn't do it with fresh city. The products are more expensive than other companies but the service is atrocious. You get instantaneous auto replies to your emails, but if you have a real problem (liked missed deliveries or lack of security on dealing with my condo key!) You get weak platitudes and no action, and eventually they just ignore you. read more

I absolutely love Fresh City Farms. My husband and I get a weekly vegetable/fruit delivery for 2 people and we have been impressed with everything that they have sent. Produce is fresh, delicious and free of unnecessary packaging. Having our groceries delivered has been such a godsend in terms of convenience and saving time in our busy schedules and it's a really great feeling knowing that the food we eat is organic, sustainable and good for us! We love the online function letting us replace some items in each bag as often as we wish with no extra charge. I also find that the bags are very reasonably priced and comparable to what I would spend at a Longo's or Metro - oftentimes we cannot even finish what they send us and have to put our next bag on hold. It's also been a great experience in terms of trying out produce that we haven't tried before. Props also to their excellent customer service! I really like the options that give you some variety within a single category each week, i.e. the "cheese of the week", "mushroom of the week" and so on. I've been very happy with the quality and variety of meats, cheeses and eggs they have sent. The quality of the vegetables has been consistently quite good as well. I think they would be perfect for people who want meal kits or pre-prepared items. They're not as ideal if you want to order specific items to follow your own recipes and/or minimize visits to grocery stores. I do a lot of baking and the package sizes of flours and grains that Fresh City Farms sells are much too small to be any use, so I'm buying a lot of non-organic groceries at the store now to replace items I used to get from Front Door Organics. I also often have to run to the store unexpectedly because of an out of stock item in the order. We have tried ordering bags with fruits a few times but always ended up cancelling them because they were very repetitive in terms of variety, and often of poor quality. Nearly every mango has been black inside, and quite often the apples were not merely blemished but bruised and mushy too - my children wouldn't eat them. They always reimburse me promptly when I have time to email about problems with the order, though, and they're always helpful and friendly. read more
