Wow this place reminded us so much of Sprouts! The layout is soo similar and the food. There is plenty of parking and lots of grocery carts! We found some unique sweet potato chips and some fruit (the blueberries were 2 for $5). We also tried the blueberry muffin (it is ok, a little too moist for a muffin). I've always had the best experience here, but today especially. I was running around after my workout and I wanted to get myself some iced coffee and needed some filtered water. Once I got to the register with my items, my tap to pay was not working. Amber at this store was an angel sent from above and was able to pay it for me (I Venmoed her back don't worry). This is a great store. the staff are terrific and my favorite all time place to shop. The ease of self check out is like no other. I never have a problem and the staff are always right there to help. I always have staff asking If I need help and they share with me the options I have with the foods I am buying. The open house was fantastic! The dietitian on line is great to follow from Fresh Thyme. I rush to the store after watching her on FB most times and prepare the food she has prepared. The most important part is the lighting in the parking lot is great for us women shopping at night!! read more

Been here a handful of times and though they are not the largest supermarket in town, they are conveniently located on Washtenaw alongside a bunch of other stores and restaurants, and have a pretty varied selection of produce and groceries, enough to make it your normal supermarket stop. I love that they carry some organic and local produce and ingredients! Walking in the veggies, fruits are in the first area upon entry, flanked by a bakery/deli along the right wall. Further back along the right wall is a refrigerated ready-made food section followed by fish market and butcher. Toward the center are some dry goods, snacks, featured product displays, and further to the left side of the store are aisles with various products--everything you'd find in a normal grocery with maybe the exception of a robust pet/household cleaning products aisle. Since the switching to majority self checkout this place has been the pits. I get having a few self checkout kiosks for folks who want to get in and out with a few items, but if you need to do an actual, substantial weekly grocery shop then the self checkout process is burdensome and annoying. But the final straw for me was the utterly rude white dude employee with the knit Rasta-style hat who was clearly pissed that me (who was recovering from surgery and unable to lift heavy items or move my arms much) and my 78 year old mother (who had come to town to help me out during post op recovery) dared to be shopping in an aisle while he was restocking during a relatively low traffic and not very busy time of day. Seriously dude, what crawled up your ass? Was it one of the bugs I found in the sliced deli meat a few months ago? Which leads me to say: while this place is fine for pantry staples and basic produce, I don't recommend buying meat or anything from the deli counter. Meat is consistently not fresh and I'm not kidding about finding a roach in the half pound of sliced turkey I got a few months ago. In conclusion: staff are rude as hell, self checkout is a pain in the ass, and there's not much that's fresh about this fresh thyme except for maybe employee attitudes. And before anyone gets all bent out of shape about this review: I worked in service for almost 10 years, and there is absolutely no excuse for treating disabled and elderly customers with passive aggressive disdain. read more

For the past decade my family have been fans of Busch's Fresh Food Market, to the point I swear they actually own the place, or they think it's the best thing since sliced bread was invented. I can honestly say I have also been to Whole Foods as well, and neither one of those two places do anything for me. However, two of my coworkers told me about Fresh Tyme Farmer's Market last year, so when I found out they carry Aloha Shoyu Sauce from Hawaii, I just had to check this place out. Built on the land that used to be home to the Ypsi-Arbor Lanes bowling alley founded in 1962, Fresh Thyme is a food lovers paradise. If you're idea of high-end culinary cuisine is a PBJ sandwich, then this is not the place for you. That being said, if you have demanding taste buds that love to be treated to a world of delicious delights, then Fresh Thyme is your ticket to a better experience at the dinner table, especially if you like organic foods. When I walked into this location, it was hard to believe several years ago, my friends and I from Eastern Michigan University would come to this exact spot to bowl, and enjoy some really fun times together. It was a great way to blow off steam from those annoying mid-terms and final exams that make you feel so completely drained. Sadly, those days are gone now, as Ypsilanti no longer has a bowling center to hang out at with your friends. The first thing that harkens back to the days of the Ypsi-Arbor Lanes, is how spacious Fresh Thyme really is. It doesn't convey that claustrophobic feeling that other stores can give you, where live in fear of running over, or crashing into somebody with a shopping cart, which is a lawsuit at some locations waiting to happen. Moreover, everything clean and is arranged in a logical order that makes various items very easy to find. Ironically, I wish other grocery stores would follow this simple concept, but they specialize on "impulse buying" from their customers to boost the bottom line. Sadly, Fresh Thyme no longer carries Aloha Shoyu (Soy) Sauce, or their other products. Apparently, sales weren't good enough to continue selling their products. Conversely, I did pickup a bottle of SAN-J Shoyu sauce brewed in Virginia that's organic, so I will have to try it out. So if you're looking to break away from the mundane food shopping experience that you'll find a Kroger, Meijer, and Wal-Mart, then stop in at Fresh Thyme and just browse around. They also have a soup and salad bar to give you nutritious sustenance for lunchtime or any other point in the day. read more

This is a nice place to shop! If you're looking to have a change in your diet or try something new, Fresh Thyme has a good amount of options for you. There are a great amount of vegetarian/vegan, organic, and locally sourced options as well. However, they do come at a higher cost than at a store like Meijer or Kroger which makes it less affordable for lower budgets. In the past, Fresh Thyme has struggled with customer capacity when it comes to checkout lanes, but recently they had upgraded to a self checkout option which has been helpful! I'd highly recommend their Fresh Thyme Market muffins; they taste amazing and are a great grab-and-go for school or work!! read more

This eagerly anticipated market is a welcome alternative to the trendy, more "upscale" markets in the Ann Arbor metro area. The market segment is a notch above Trader Joe's and about where Lucky's Market on South Industrial Avenue is currently. Pro tip: the parking lot gets full at peak times and on weekends. I sometimes park in the bank lot next door on Sunday and come across. The theme is a "Farmers's Market" with each department it's own "market-within-a-market". I shop at Fresh Thyme's sister market, Sprouts, when I am home back in the San Francisco Bay Area (Los Altos, specifically). The produce is fresh and the meats are delicious. The specialty foods are always tasty. If I am short on time, I often pick-up a prepared meal or entree. I do not always recognize the brands, but what I have bought has been excellent. I was pleasantly surprised with this grocery store and have been awaiting its opening for a while. This place can be pretty cheap to shop at depending on the sales and if you know your prices. This is similar to a Sprouts (Bay Area, California), especially the setup of their produce. The produce looks fresh and the categories have a decent amount of selection for different brands. I prefer FT over Lucky's, even though people say it's comparable. Service was great. I asked for a price check of something that wasn't ringing up correctly, and the Manager fixed the issue immediately. The cashier apologized for the wait. The service here (although still new) is a notch above other grocery stores. I recommend it to everyone!!!!! I was looking for a spot to get fresh meat and veggies and this was recommended. It sits off of Washtenaw Avenue and has plenty of parking. The place reminds me of a smaller Whole foods or Plum market. There are vegetables, meats, wines, cheeses, specialty products and more. There is also a deli and a place to get fresh fish. I was looking for lamb and unfortunately they were all out. I did end up getting some fresh salmon and veggies. I also found some komboucha and a nice red Cabernet. Overall it is a nice clean place with fresh products. It is a hidden gem of the area and I would recommend a visit. read more

I just moved to Ypsi last week. Yeah, I know, great timing for a move. So, at this time, the only things that I can really check out in my new neighborhood are grocery stores, and other ESSENTIALS. That word is really beginning to piss me off. What doesn't piss me off, is the excellent service that I have received at this store. Super friendly, and I am ever so grateful that they are there to help me keep from wasting away to nothing (yeah right) during this unprecedented (I hate that word too) time. Overall good prices, few things lacking (due to hoarding), and parking great. They don't carry a few of the things that I would like (pate, better wines, carrot essential oil)... but other than that, there's not much more I could ask for at this store. So here we are. This is my favorite grocery store in town. For those who may know, it shares a kindred spirit with the late Fresh&Easy (RIP). It beats out Whole Foods, Busch's and even my long-loved TJs (first US store is in my old stomping grounds in Cali) for the following reasons: 1. Spacious layout, brightly lit well-organized store (see Exhibit A). 2. Excellent and diverse selection of staples and specialty items. They have flavor-infused vinegars and olive oils, a grain mill, a raw nut and seed bar, and Wallaby yogurts! 3. Plenty of those mini, double-tiered shopping carts (Exhibit B). 4. NO LINES = MINIMAL wait time (Exhibit C). 5.plenty of parking. 6. Extremely fair pricing. 7. First time here today and completely impressed with this store. The produce looks amazing and the barn deals such as blackberries and roma tomatoes for 99 cents. I also love the bulk area with all the variety from grains, sweets, snacks and nuts. I tried dark chocolate covered strawberries and they are scrumptious. I have come to love Fresh Thyme so much. The prices and quality are pretty much unbeatable. I'd definitely have given this location an extra star if the prices were slightly more of a deal. Strangely, other Fresh Thyme stores have better deals/lower prices. This location is quite sizable and there are also flowers and plants outside which are beautiful! The parking lot is huge which is awesome and it seems to be well staffed so there shouldn't be too long of waits. I'll try this location again and see if there are better deals. read more

Dear Franchise Owner, My patience is at an end. I really gave it a shot, for spring and summer I shopped at your store. I will not return due to poor customer service. Your cashiers (the two girls, one brunette, the other "blondish" w/nametag Lily) are really subpar. Not only are they rude but they don't know how to bag properly (Kroger's has an intellectually challenged bagger who knows what to do: heavy things on the bottom, light things on top). It's not rocket science. The Brunette Cashier: perhaps she's a cheese affineur, who knows. I purchased some sale cheese hastily at your store and when I was loading the bags into the trunk, I noticed the cheese was moldy yet the expiry date was not past. I went back in immediately to exchange it for another package but eyeing me with suspicion and doubt as if I was about to scam the store of $1.99, Brunette Cashier argued with me for over five minutes that it wasn't moldy. I'm not a Certified Cheese Professional but I know my cheeses and I know mold. I finally had to politely ask for the manager who was kind enough to try to find another package which didn't have mold growing already. The bakery: inconsistent baking or just not paying attention to details. I love the cornbread but many times your baker doesn't pour the batter in properly and the middle is left partially uncooked. Please do not label the regular Wonder bread quality white bread that you have shaped into baguettes and call it French bread. No it's not, it's not been properly kneaded where the gluten's elasticity has not developed for a real loaf of french bread. Yes, you can still produce a decent loaf of french baguette for $1.99--Trader Joe's does, so does Busch's. Ordering at the sandwich counter: your store is virtually empty, no customers at the sandwich counter but still the guy who makes the sandwiches takes literally 25 minutes for 2 sandwiches---that was his only job, he wasn't doing anything else. Get some training from Zingerman's, Subway's, Jimmy John's, or Potbelly, etc! Check out Zingerman's premiere customer service training. To the Cashier girls (the two aforementioned), I'll give you a short tip from Zingtraining--the "10/4 Rule:" when a customer comes within 10 feet of any staff person, make eye contact and smile. Within 4 feet, greet the customer.) As much as I don't like Whole Foods the company, at least their employees are nice and helpful. Franchise Owner: I feel sorry for you. Either you can't get decent help or you simply don't have a person who trains your staff properly. Those girls at the cash register don't really have much to do, you barely have one or two customers in line (I've been to your store at various times during the day and on weekends so I can attest to how busy you are). Most of the time they're chatting and when they do have to do their job they act like their too good to be cashiers. Advice to Shoppers: there's going to be an Aldi's opening across from Kroger's on Carpenter Rd., there is also a Meijers further down the street. Meijer's actually owns Fresh Thyme and their produce buyer no doubt sources for Fresh Thyme. No, Fresh Thyme is not what happens when Whole Foods and Trader Joe's has a baby--just go back to Meijer for good deals on produce. I will not be returning to FT @Ypsi, I may buy groceries in the FT@Canton if I'm in the vicinity but after the negative experiences--I will shop at a variety of available grocery venues (Whole Foods, Plum Market, Lucky's Market, Trader Joe's, Kroger's, Busch's, the many Farmers Markets, Meijers to name a few right in town). read more

Stopped in for some camping provisions and was super disappointed. They were out of a lot of items, especially in bulk foods, and the folks restocking the shelves were kind of bulls - almost got run into multiple times, and I couldn't get to some items despite asking staff to move/help. Very strange. Then when I asked Shellee the cashier to use 1 plastic bag (to use for camp trash) and the rest paper, she got super huffy, shaking her head and ranting about how much she hates plastic... and then she used plastic bags for all of my groceries. She was also super rude about the credit card machine - kept saying I was putting my card in wrong and getting visibly upset with me only to realize she had to hit a button on her end. No apology, no acknowledgement that she was being weird about it... guessing her mood had nothing to do with me, but it sure doesn't make me want to return. read more

My quick read on Fresh Thyme: Good basic supermarket with better than average range of organic/"green lifestyle" products, though not quite the selection might find at larger stores. Prices below average on some items, competitive or a bit above average on others. Very clean and pleasant place to shop. For some more detail: My first impressions here weren't good-I came on their opening day and checkout lines stretched all the way to the back of the store. I made a quick inspection and left. Returned two days later, early in the morning, and found it much less hectic. I was interested mainly in meat and produce, and with both, the range of merchandise offered was limited, but appeared of high quality. About a third of the produce cooler was devoted to organic products, mostly very common items like broccoli, cabbage, etc. Prices on those were typical of other stores in the area (even the notoriously pricey ones). Offerings of grass-fed meats were very limited--hamburger and a couple of kinds of steak, mostly prepackaged. However, prices on some of these items were a shade better than you'd find elsewhere. Plus, there were some unusal meats such as goat and elk--I didn't buy any, but will get around to experimenting with those some day. Bulk goods--nuts, flours, granola, etc. generally came at bargain prices. Bulk olive oil and vinegars are on tap from steel tureens. The deli counter is small. There is a salad bar and an olive bar, though not a hot food bar. No coffee bar, but there is a self-serve java pot near the bulk coffee bins. Beer and wine department was small; prices were competitive with most local stores. There were some great sale prices ($4.99 rotisserie chicken was one when I stopped in as well as 2/$1 avocados) at the moment, and I expect I will swing by at least once in a while to check those out. Your reaction to Fresh Thyme will probably depend on your expectations. If you're looking for a discount version of Whole Foods, you may be let down. But if you're looking for quality, healthy, staple foods, you're not a foodie with fussy and sometimes esoteric tastes (guilty as charged), and always on the lookout for a steal of a deal, this could be your favorite grocery stop. Especially with many apartments in walking distance, it's a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

It was painful to see the employee behind the counter move as slowly as he did. We left the deli area. When asking a cashier for the location of low carb tortillas, we just received an emotionless "I don't know". I doubt we will be back. Hey there are many things to like about Fresh Thyme -- including the convenience. Reading thru the comments I have to agree the staff mean well but service is spotty. Yes, many good things but also memorable is when you buy a pie and the crust could break a tooth, or you see sour dough bread and loving sour dough buy it.... its decent, but then, this stops and now you have 'white bread' labelled sour dough. What happened? They once DID know how to make it. Truely being a rather loyal customer I've gotten loaf after loaf always telling the staff at check out that I'm hoping that THIS loaf will be sour dough once more... and explain how it for weeks has been white bread labelled sourdough. They cluck sympathetically but as is typical NO ONE seems to think they can do anything about this... after telling 5 different people I suspect staff feel they are powerless to really be part of something where they CARE about what is going on as its clear no one has followed up. Now I mention this also, that I keep telling people and no one seems to give one whit.... and this also gets some sympathetic clucking. Sad. This kind of thing does places in. I don't live anywhere near here, but when I'm in the area I try to make a stop. Always fresh fruits and vegetables for fair prices. Many organic and cleaner options through the entire store and a lot of items you wouldn't find at similar supermarkets. They have in house juicers, so their house made juices are one of their best deal. I prefer the orange beet juice By far my favorite place around Ypsilanti to buy fresh food from the grocery. Fresh Thyme is my go-to store, but I've been running into more and more issues with product quality and spoilage there, especially in the meat department. A while back, they hired a new meat department employee (blonde guy, ponytail, glasses) and he has repeatedly handled my raw meat order with no gloves (and long dirty fingernails). I'm really not one to complain about things like this but it honestly grosses me out and makes me want to stop shopping there - especially since the lower quality seems to have carried over to the prepackaged meat section as well. The chicken shelves are constantly covered in sticky raw chicken goop from leaky packages, and twice I've had to return ground beef on the same day I bought it because it smelled so rancid. I've noticed expired products on the shelves, too -- I know there are supply chain issues impacting grocery stores right now, but y'all, PLEASE keep the "fresh" in Fresh Thyme!! read more

This place is alright...we usually come here for produce or water, other than that everything else is pricey. One thing they have that my children like is the free fruit for kids, which is nice. The customer service here is so-so to miss. It's like the people working here are disconnected or don't even care you're there. For instance today when I went the cashier was ringing me up, but as he handed my receipt without looking at me and he barley mumbled thank you as he was looking at his phone. Time and time again this place doesn't give off the friendly vibe. That's why I only come here when I have to. The vegan ice cream is always overpriced compared to Kroger, Meijer or Lucky's. When this store opened in Ypsilanti it was a wonderful experience! I enjoyed going, talking to all of the people that worked there and the checkout lane was so much fun I loved it. I don't know what happened to this place! The people are passive aggressive, now they have self checkout lanes! There's nobody there to help you anymore. There's a gentleman that works in the deli that talks so loud about someone's diabetes and some other stuff that's inappropriate and you can hear them all the way over by the bananas. The atmosphere is horrible now. The place is dirty it used to be so clean and beautiful. It used to feel like a very wonderful little market and now it feels like walmart! I am so sad. I don't like going here anymore. I used to leave uplifted and happy and now I leave angry and irritated. I try to avoid this place now as much as possible. read more

I'm really glad this place opened up. It's very convenient for me and it has a nice welcoming appearance. Everything is organized and bright and vibrant. The produce seem to be on the less expensive side compared to it's pricey neighbor up the street. The bulk items and some of the packaged goods like baking chips and granola bars seem to be on the pricier side. They do have some good sales going on like the Harvest Fresh pea and black bean pods. I love those things. The staff is quite friendly and helpful. They also have a good variety of organic produce which seems to be on par with Trader Joe's or maybe a little bit more expensive. They also have fresh juice section. I also like that they sell more than just food. For example, they have a body section with lotions and things. They seem to be competing with Whole Foods and will definitely give them some competition. I know I will continue to frequent them and take advantage of the great location and affordable prices. I politely asked him a question, but he responded with a very sarcastic and demeaning tone, and walked away without making eye contact.
