Midnight Express Diner is a must for each trip I make to NYC. I typically staying in the Upper East Side and I will venture round to the diner to get their fantastic breakfast. The pancakes are phenomenal. The atmosphere is typical NYC diner with plenty of options. I have only had their breakfast and really enjoy each time. There is plenty of seating available, therefore for most part, there are no wait times. Service is descent. I recommend that pancakes for sure. We came in before the lunch rush and glad we snatch a spot in a booth, services was okay, understandable since it got really busy and the food is great. I got the chicken Cubano panini (it was a bit salty for my liking so if you are salt sensitive like me, ask for the relish and mustard on the side. ) It comes with a pickle and cole slaw or if you wanted to get a deluxe that has fries. Portion was big, i didn't finished my panini, so save the other half for later meal. I would rate the panini a 8.5/ 10. In addition I ordered a bowl of fruits to have a balance meal. My boyfriend got the mixed berry pancakes, as you can see in the picture it's HUGE and also we took the rest to go. 8/10 is what he gives it. I have been to the Midnight Express Diner numerous times in the past few years. It's a really spacious place. This works in its favor because no matter how crowded it gets, it never seems particularly noisy. Gotta love those acoustics. The wait staff is very friendly and very fast. Plus, they teeter between taking orders with pens and pads and a handheld computer...thingy. When I'm there with one friend, we usually go in the mornings. Since I'm barely functioning, I get a side order of corned beef hash and a side order of home fries. These sides orders are pretty big. They're so delicious! Especially because they have hot sauce. Not just any hot sauce but Choula Hot sauce. Yes! The corned beef hash and home fries are very flavorful and always hit the spot. It usually turns me from barely to semi functioning. Now, when I'm here with another friend, we always go after work, usually after 5p. My friend and I usually share a plate of disco fries, fries with melted cheese and brown gravy, while she has a chardonnay and I have a vodka coke. Then, since she's eating healthy and orders a salad, I follow suit. I get a Greek salad. Now, I get it without tomatoes and cucumbers and get extra feta, grape leaves (dolmas), and anchovies. I love everything about this meal. It's so delicious. I can delude myself that I'm eating healthy... with all my additions. I met with this same friend earlier this week. Though, we had the same shared disco fries plate. Our meals changed. She had Nutella Banana pancakes which were a stack of three banana pancakes heavily drizzled with Nutella. I had some of it. It was deliciously decadent. I can understand why she couldn't finished it. I had the Bacon Guacamole burger with fries. It also came with a pickle and cole slaw. The burger was done rare and I got it without diced tomatoes and the butter lettuce. It only had the red onions which I put some salt and a lot of Choula on it. It was amazing! However, I also ordered something else that I should have never ordered: the French Onion soup. Never in my years had I ever known any kind of establishment or soup brand to mess up French Onion soup but the Midnight Express Diner did. So very epically. There was onions and melted cheese but the beef broth was NOT broth, it tasted like water. I put salt, pepper, and Choula to save it. All I managed to do was create lightly salted, peppery, and spicy water. I couldn't finish it. If there's anything to know, I hate not finishing my food, especially something as universally delicious and soothing as soup. That nearly broke me. So yes, while I do recommend the Midnight Express Diner for their service, their salads, their breakfast foods, do not, and I can't stressed this enough, DO NOT ORDER THE FRENCH ONION SOUP. The staff were very friendly and attentive (almost a little too attentive, as they took away one of our plates prior to us being done, it's ok). We started with coffee and orange juice. I like that they continuously come around asking if you want a refill of the coffee. That's definitely great! The food was pretty good also. Mozzarella sticks, delicious. Chicken quesadilla, delicious. French onion soup and blueberry pancakes, I've had better, wouldn't get either again. We only wanted two pancakes, but he said the order came with four and it would be the same price regardless. Prices were reasonable but I give the 3.5 rating due to the food I was served (my omelette lacked seasoning) and the cleanliness of the jelly/butter served to us, as well (very sticky, felt like honey on the outside which was odd). But the service was for the most part attentive and good on refills for coffee. I also liked the booth we sat in that was in the middle of the diner and there was a lot of space to sit. I was contacted by the manager the same day, and he wanted to make it right. Mike explained the description on delivery.com was incorrect and offered to deliver me lunch. He showed genuine concern about my horrific Monday so I took him up for his offer the next day. This time I order the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese...burger (love the play on words) and OMG was this burger huge! It did not disappoint with the 1/2lbs burger patty, 3 large strips of CRISPY bacon, beautifully cooked egg, cheese, lettuce, and RIPE tomato! I think what impressed be the most was the bun! It was perfectly toasted and was able to stand up to this burger. It truly sets the bar to the surrounding bars in the area offering a burger at similar price point. With most of the competitors, their buns would just disintegrate under the mass of the burger- no not here! It's a simple observation but a very important one! Fav diner on the UES! We go for brunch all the time and it's always packed. $20.95 gets you an entree and one drink and a small fresh fruit cup. The Nutella banana pancakes are amazing; smothered in Nutella and so fluffy! My friend got the Benny the bagel with lox and eggs and he loved it.
