I've dined at Freshroots on several occasions and have yet to be let down. Their hot sandwiches are all good, especially on sourdough bread. I'm also a big fan of their cold slaw and especially the gouda mac n cheese (it's so good they put in on one of their sandwiches). I do agree that they can do more with the decor...they inherited a pretty drab vinyl composition tile floor that resembles a doctor's office. If "wood look", vinyl plank was laid down over it, I think the place would look much better. Another plus is that they offer Lucky Goat hot and iced brewed coffee(another great addition to the Tallahassee food scene). I only wish that they were open on weekends...the eggs benedict sandwiches are excellent as well. This place is definitely a hidden gem...go check it out! read more

Well, watch out Hopkins, it may not be in the right location, but the food is awesome at Freshroots Kitchen! I don't know what genre it is in but everything I've had is great. Breakfast, lunch, salads and coffee. Today's treat was loaded chicken salad salad. I'm a big eater but trying to watch the carbs. This salad was gigantic and loaded with veggies, topped with about 12 oz of chicken salad. I got a side of cilantro-lime coleslaw, which was likewise over the top, bursting with flavor. Quite possibly the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. I tasted everything I asked for plus the wheat berry slices of bread were delicious. I wish I knew about this place sooner. This place in my opinion is kind of hard to find but when I finally tried it, it was great. All of their ingredients are super fresh which makes the food all the better. I decided to try the buffalo chicken sandwich, which was very good. The chicken had tons of flavor and the the two types of cheeses on it just added to it. They also toast their bread to perfection, and it gives the sandwich a nice crunch. I also tried their iced sweet tea, which was really good. I would've given this place five stars but the Gouda mac and cheese didn't have much flavor to it. Everything else about it was good, just not the flavor. If they added some bacon to it that would probably make it really good (but of course everything tastes better with bacon). I can't wait to come back here and try another one of their sandwiches and see how great those are. Freshroots is a great place to go for lunch if you are ever in the area. My husband and I come through Tallahassee quite to visit family, and we will definitely be adding Freshroots to our list of restaurants to stop by for a quick bite. I needed to be able to find lunch today that I could quickly pick up to go, but I'm always looking for unique places that use fresh ingredients. This hit the spot. I had the Jammin melt, and the mixture of flavors was perfect. The sandwich was huge, and it was very reasonably priced. I also ordered the street corn, and it was okay, but considering that this isn't an authentic Mexican restaurant, I already knew that it probably wouldn't be spicy/tangy enough. I had a lunch meeting here. This was my first time at this quaint find. I ordered the Veggie & Hummus on GF bread and it was really good. This place is awesome. I've been here twice so far, the first time I got the Italian melt and the second time I got the Cuban melt. Both were fantastic, some of the best sandwiches I've had. The owner is incredibly friendly and constantly checks in to make sure everything is ok. The restaurant itself has a very homey feel. Easily one of my favorite places in Tallahassee. We decided to have lunch at Freshroots Kitchen and after driving around looking for it for a bit (not really well marked from the road) we finally located it and headed in. First of all it was freezing in there, maybe a slight exaggeration but it actual was cold enough that I ate faster so I could get back in the sunshine and warm up, it would have really been nice if they had some outside seating. Not really sure if this was a one off but someone in there must really like being cold. Anyway, we looked over the menu a bit and settled on two sandwiches (Jammin' and Hawaiian melts) and a side of mac and cheese. The two sandwiches were good, plenty of flavor on both of them, there were a lot of different elements going into the but none of them clashed so it actually worked really well. The bread though, was just acceptable. It definitely wasn't terrible, super cheap bread, but it also didn't seem like a really high quality. They did have several options for bread but the sourdough really didn't do it for me. The mac and cheese was also something I would pass on, the pasta itself was overcooked a little, leading to that somewhat mushy texture. The flavor also wasn't anything super amazing, the gouda gave it a bit of an different flavor but nothing you would really miss out on. Overall though I think the thing that really stuck with me was the price, the sandwiches were around $8-9 a piece, they didn't have a ton of meat on them, and I easily could have eaten two. I do eat a little more than some people but it definitely felt like I was paying for more than what I was getting. The size of the sandwiches, along with the fact that the flavors weren't so good that it made up for it, would probably make me pass on Freshroots. Not because it is bad, but because it isn't great. Its definitely an option for anyone working close by, or those willing to pay their price for a light lunch, but in my opinion, there are still a few things they could improve on. read more

Went there this AM at 10:47am. Had to be at the airport at noon. Wanted to order a lunch sandwich. The girl at the counter said "No. You can't order from the lunch menu until 11:00 and it will be ready around 11:15." I told her I had to be at the airport at noon to which she replied "sorry". Pretty good place for a sandwich or salad. Great fresh ingredients. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I felt like I had to add salt (and would have wanted to add other seasonings) to the sandwich. I had the shrooom sandwich (TWO POACHED EGGS, ROASTED RED PEPPER, RED ONION, SAUTEED PORTOBELLA, SPINACH & MELTED SHARP CHEDDAR) and added chicken for an extra $1. The chicken, eggs, and other ingredients tasted fresh, but bland. The bread was buttered and toasted and the cheese was flavorful, which helped the bites that included melted cheese. The tomato bisque had the consistency of a salsa, and was weird to eat with a spoon, but definitely helped add flavor to the sandwich when I used it as a dipping sauce. A friend had an order of the street corn, which looked amazing. I will likely go back to try it. Edit: I've since tried the street corn and it's very good. My favorite melt so far is the Horsey, which is a roast beef sandwich with horseradish aioli. The food seems healthier than most sandwich shops - for better or worse. Most of what I've tried here is not bursting with spices and flavors, but it's definitely better than the sandwich you brought from home. I actually found this place on Yelp looking for a good lunch place and they did NOT disappoint! They're located in a plaza which was a little off putting but I didn't realize until we arrived that they actually have w relatively cute/spacious patio area! My friend got the Smokin on rye and I got the Mac on sourdough and they were both SOOO delicious! I have to say I favored the Smokin but both were great. It's an order at the counter place but the employees were so sweet and she even brought my dog a little bowl of water on the patio when they realized we had brought him. So my wife dragged me along to this place as we were driving through on our way home in another state. She said they had this salad that sounded good called the Polynesian, it had 4.5 stars on Yelp, and there was a sandwich called Jammin that she thought would be right up my ally. We followed the directions Siri gave us and as I was pulling up to "the destination is on the right" we were in a medical center, I thought "What has she gotten me into now?" We went inside and as I tried to look at the menu beautifully hand written on the wall our 4 year old had to go potty so I told my wife to just order the Jammin or whatever it was she had said she thought I would like; I was a little irritated, tired of the kids bickering, and just wanted to have some peace. The bathroom was clean and actually rather relaxing with a cool looking bare bulb light, which my son also thought was cool. I mention this because I'm an OR Nurse and rather picky about how clean things are so my standards of clean are rather high. Got back out to sit at the table and the kids were running wild and whining. The staff didn't complain about the fact that they were running wild (ok, the 4 year old was exploring the high bench seat along one wall and looking out the door at a dog and our 10 year old was looking at the front counter display while our 1 year old toddled after his brothers). Our food was brought out on nice wooden plates and a bowl (my wife's salad), which matched the island kind of theme the place had. I wish I had taken a photo of our food to post it looked so nice in their presentation. My oldest had a turkey sandwich which I think I blinked and it had disappeared (he is a picky eater so this is saying something). Our two little ones had a lovely looking grilled peanut butter and honey which smelled really good and which our 1 year old really liked (he ate while sitting in my lap as he refused to be in the high chair, which I might add was very clean and properly functioning). My wife had ordered the Polynesian salad which brought us to the place and really enjoyed it. I had the Jammin sandwich as previously mentioned that my wife said she thought was right up my ally. Let me tell you, all I know is it was some heavenly version of a BLT (no lettuce that I noticed) with avocado and some kind of salsa or relish (not sure how to categorize it but it was amazing). It was grilled. I took a bite and it was so rich and flavorful! I just felt the tension of the day melting away as only really good food can do as I relished the amazing flavors dancing in my mouth. I love really spicy hot foods so my sense of spicy isn't what most people have; I told my wife she had to try a bite it was so delicious and she did but she said it was too spicy for her but delicious. This sandwich really was something special! I'm wishing I had another as I write this knowing I may never get to enjoy this heavenly perfection again unless we happen to be passing through again while this joint is open, and let me tell you if we are passing through I am going to be doing everything I can to ensure our timing is right so I get to have this sandwich again! When I was done eating my most delicious sandwich I got up and went to ask for containers for the leftovers (my wife's salad, which she finished off later as we drove, and our sons' PB & honey sandwich) I asked the young man at the counter if I could talk to the chef to compliment them. I'm not sure if he communicated that last part to the chef because the chefs came out (as the manager/owner(?) poked her head out nervously) kind of wearily. I thanked them and told them that I wanted to compliment them on the delicious Jammin sandwich as it was really something special and one of the best sandwiches I have ever had and that I wish we lived closer so I could have it again, it was so good. My wife piped up that I had never asked to speak to the chef before and that I usually complain when she drags me along to such places. The chefs beamed and said I made their day. I replied that they had made my day with such a delicious sandwich that I was grateful to them for providing. If you are in the area, between 0700 and 1500 (7am-3pm), stop and enjoy a meal here! Freshroots is a nice restaurant. With the name "Freshroots Kitchen" I expected more veggie dishes, but "it is what it is". I went on my lunch break. I first ordered the "smoked salmon blt". It must be a popular dish because they were out of salmon. So, I ordered the "veggie & hummus" sandwich. After adding salt and pepper to it the COLD sandwich was good. It was packed and well stacked. Driving through and we stopped here for lunch. SO SO good. I had the Black & Blue Salad which was a different take on a classic salad. The crunchy onions and blackened chicken was a perfect combo. My husband had the Italian sandwich which consisted of chicken pesto. Satisfyingly tasty according to him. He added a side of their gouda mac & cheese and enjoyed it.
