We love Friar's BUT.. they do not take reservations so ...my husband & I came in, told them we had two more couples coming. They said we could have the one & only big corner round table but we couldn't be seated yet. Our second couple arrived but we still couldn't be seated...we could not be seated until the third couple arrived!! IN FACT the server said IF six people had walked in just then, they would have given them the one & only table for six even though we had just requested & made it clear we wanted it & our third couple would be there soon (which they were). Thankfully it worked out. But definitely not the place to go if your group is more than 4! Food was pretty good & our waitress was great so still 3 stars but as far as working with bigger groups- 1 star if i could! My wife and I came here for lunch. This place has rustic decor. It is not brightly lit making for an intimate ambiance. We were seated immediately despite being nearly full. Our waitress was prompt and brought our drinks before we were ready to order. We decided to split the Submarine sandwich and get side orders of French fries and chili. The Submarine sandwich consists of a combination of ham, turkey, salami, and cheese on French bread. Served with tomatoes and our special dressing (Served hot or cold). The dressing is an Italian vinaigrette. It also comes with a sour cream and dill spread. This sandwich is perfect to share or for 2 meals. The sandwich is of good quality. It is heaped with meat and cheese, topped with fresh lettuce and tomato. The fries were lightly seasoned and deep fried to a crispy texture. The chili was good and hearty. It was flavorful but not spicy. This chili is unique as they add macaroni to it. It was topped with shredded cheese and came with Texas toast. This will be my new go-to sandwich shop. read more

Ordered a double cheeseburger with bacon and grilled onions. It was hot and delicious and medium just like I asked. Would def go back for other burgers there. For normal people the regular cheese burger would be fine. It was a total of 1pound for the meat and was good through the whole thing. Would def recommend this place to anyone for the $13 price tag. read more

Honestly? I have NEVER had a bad experience here. Never. We always eat at the bar. All bartenders over the past 8 years, (since we first came here) have been perfect in every way! Burgers are juicy, fries and sides are crispy , and I love the French onion soup. They also include small amounts of raw veggies to snack on. Happy hour is great too! One more thing, desserts! Cute little place. Typical bar fare but the servers are dressed out of Robin Hood with frocks on. Place was quiet so we got our food quickly. By the time we left, the parking lot was full. The onion rings and chicken wings were good. The wings aren't sauced buy you can get one on the side to dip. The creamy buffalo was good and not too spicy (if at all). Drinks were well poured. Yes, I would recommend friar Tucks. We stopped there after seven in the evening, and shared one of those delicious hamburger sandwiches. They split it for us on two separate plates, and it was wonderful. The waitress was helpful with suggestions, and did her job admirably, as we could see her moving around with other customers. We had a craft beer (for him) and a Rum & Coke (for her) and both were great. We did plan our visit after the happy hour, because they are less busy and we aren't heavy drinkers. The description says that it is a sandwich and cocktails place- and it is. Lots of deep fried apps as well. Attentive service, dark windowless decor. I went in looking for an entree and a beer. No entrees, short beer list. So I ordered the grilled chicken Caesar, a cup of chili, and a Spotted Cow. Salad was good. Excellent food but the initial seating service was really lacking. We waited 15 minutes to be seated after numerous employees looked at us and kept on walking by. Eventually, I took a peek and saw 5 empty tables! Makes we wonder if Friar Tuck's has a defined host/hostess or that job is left to the already busy servers. I had a great patty melt. Boyfriend had a half cheeseburger and soup combo, though they brought him a whole burger. If you want fries, those are a side item you add. A large order was enough for 2 people. This place caught my eye as we drove down the street, I think it was the sign. Im a sucker for unique signage. If it's different it's probably pretty good. Well it indeed was. We love dark cozy places and this place has it. I walked outside after leaving and could barely see from my eyes trying to adjust. All good tho. I started with a bloody mary which was very good, the waitress asked me what I wanted my garnishments to be. Really? AWESOME! All of them!!! ha! Ordered the french onion soup and the 1/2 submarine sandwich and the hubby ordered a bacon cheeseburger. I must say this was probably one of the best bacon cheeseburgers I have tried in a very long time. My sub sandwich was good. But I will try something else next time. Gosh...a small chain restaurant in Wisconsin. They have three locations and obviously they are a thing in WI. The name was intriguing so why not stop for a quick nosh! This place has absolutely no windows....what are you hiding in there? The atmosphere tried to have a little monastic appeal so you penitent Catholics this may be your jam. Lunch was definitely a senior session with the elderly sipping their mid-day cocktails which I thought was charming. The food....okay you make your own ranch dressing plus one point. However, the salad is served using slightly browned iceberg lettuce...subtract one point. Burger was decent but wasn't the best I have ever eaten but not shabby. Service was timely and good. Would I stop here again? Probably but I wouldn't expect gourmet dining but just a good place for a sandwich. It is a little dark in here so bring the light for your Bible. read more

Do not order the Fish Fry Special. First I have never wrote such a review. I got my order for$14 and the haddock was so greasy and undone the french fries under the fish were so soggy one could not pick up with fork much less finger. I ate one piece of fish and quit, GREASY. I showed the waitress and she brought me some french fries. So $14 I got a piece of carrot and a order of fries for $14...........POOR at best. Love to go to friars when I come back to visit Manitowoc. Awesome side orders and huge sandwichiches. Sad to see the price of their soup went up to $4.00 for a crock of french onion. Although it's a bit pricier than it was a couple years back you can still get a sandwich and a side for about $11. We knew about this restaurant because of the one in Fond du Lac, so the dark decor wasn't a surprise. BUT...it was like we stepped back in time, and not in a good way. The carpet was worn and hadn't been vacuumed or cleaned in forever. The walls were stained with who knows? The ceiling drop panels were buckling in places. The chairs were straight out of the 70's, as were the booths. The menus were laminated paper and tearing along the creases. Food was just ok, service was lackluster and cole slaw, mayo and dill dip came to table in little disposable plastic cups. The owners need to do a serious overhaul of this place!! This is one of a series of reviews I feel compelled to write after a recent trip back to the homeland of NE Wisconsin. Friar Tuck's is usually on my list of "must visits" but probably will be losing its place due to my experience there this past Saturday. Everyone in my party seemed to enjoy their food--but my "Little John" burger was made with a frozen, pre-made, patty with those fake grill marks. It reminded me of the protein burgers that were sold in the LHS cafeteria in the late 80s when I was a student. Seriously? Why? Is this the new standard? Perhaps it was the size of patty ordered? A simple "we are out of that" would have sufficed. Additionally, we had tried to go there the previous evening, and while crowded, saw a few empty tables for our group of 2 adults and 3 kids. We simply asked the hostess if we could put a chair on the end of the table. She passed the question onto a waitress--who replied "no" without even looking up. Took about 5 minutes for someone to finally ask if we wanted dinner. The drink did not taste good, after my wife and I talked we believe the soda gun must not be cleaned often. Server was friendly, but not very attentive. My sandwich was cut in half as normal, but 3/4 of my meat was on one half of the sandwich. It is a little dark when you first enter but I didn't mind. The waitress was very pleasant. I had the cheese combo appetizer. It was decent with healthy portions of marinara and ranch for it all. I thoroughly enjoyed the roast beef wrap with a side of ranch, probably the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. For dessert I had the strawberry cheesecake which was okay. I dream of Friar Tuck's when back home in California. I don't know, the pitch black dining room, the waitstaff dressed like Franciscan monks, the chicken strips and french fries, the slot machines, the Old Fashioned's... It all coalesces into the perfect Manitowoc experience for me. When I get into town I hit the Pine River Dairy for a 50¢ two scoop ice cream cone, then over to Late's for a burger or perch sandwich, and then end up at Friar Tuck's to kill the night. I'm not going to lie, the food here isn't stellar, but the key word here is "price". You can bring four people here, all get a decent meal with beers, and they'll basically pay you it's so cheap. The beer selection is poor, but I can settle for Spotted Cow if it's priced like the water at courthouse pub. read more

Delicious food. Great service. Double bubble every week day (two drinks price of one). Waitresses are very friendly but I feel bad that they have to wear short clothing. Atmosphere is so much better now that there is no smoking. Dark inside so if it's sunny outside and you come in it takes a minute for your eyes to adjust. We were really disappointed. The food was low quality. The lettuce was wilted and the bun was soggy on two different chicken sandwiches. It appeared as if the food was microwaved. It was ok. When we walked in we were all intrigued by the decor. I love that the waitresses are even dressed up. The food was ok. We had the cheese pleasers app which was the best thing we had. Went to lunch here when we were in Manitowoc this week and been to the Frier Tucks in Fond du Lac several times . That said we were not impressed with our food this time. Service was excellent. Food was lacking flavor. When I mentioned to my friend that the au jus seemed water down, she said the French onion soup was the same. We both felt the prime rib sandwich wasn't up to par either.
