I'm not sure when sit down restaurants concluded that they can serve taco truck-esque dishes for absurd prices and I'm not about the idea. First and foremost - I believe everywhere needs to immediately stop putting single tacos on their menus. I'll admit to ordering tacos at Frida because vegetarian options were limited, but it's frankly ridiculous to ask $5 for a single taco. Come one, at least throw 2 on the plate and many more patrons will be pleased. The service was some of the worst I've experienced. We sat at the bar for quite a while before being greeted, ordering chips from one server, tacos from the bartender and our food was delivered by someone else entirely. They also forgot one of the salsas that came with the salsa sampler and placed it in front of it long after we'd devoured our other salsas. The food was ok at best. Don't get me wrong, I love fresh chips and I'm far from picky when it comes to salsas, but the tacos were nothing to write home about. According to the carnivores I was with, don't go for the meat tacos. The brussels sprouts taco was fine, but I was hungry an hour after we left. It was upwards of $40 for our salsa sampler and 2 tacos each (there were 3 of us); for a seasoned taco eater, that seems very excessive. I recommend sticking to street tacos, maybe stopping in Frida for a drink or two, but the food wasn't worth the price in my book. read more

I would eat the queso again-- good corn addition! Margs were good too. Tacos- not so much. I get the attempt to do something different to attract people. But if you're looking for authentic flavor, look elsewhere. The shrimp taco looked awesome because it had bacon...I mean who doesn't like bacon! But, ugh, this taco disappoints. It tasted like I bought frozen shrimp, dusted some Chile pepper on it, threw it one the grill, added some lettuce and then tried to be clever with some sour creme (fancy) sauce to add some flavor. Maybe just our luck of the draw but it was terrible service and mediocre overpriced food. Entire dining experience was around 90 minutes for 2 people for lunch on a Saturday. Salsa sampler was brought out and 2/3 were extremely watery. Peanut sauce was good though. Maybe we got a bad batch, I would have asked for more if our server had checked back in on us. We ran out of water but never got refills. Not even after our entree was served. 45 minutes later without a single interaction from anyone on the staff, our entree was served. 2 tacos and a salad. The shrimp in my taco was barely warm and very rubbery, but I'm fat and hungry and didn't want to wait another 45 minutes, so I ate it. Definitely not worth 5$ Again, I would have mentioned this to someone but the entire time, nobody on the staff bothered to check back in on us until it was time for the check some 30 minutes later. Was really hoping to like Frida's but was totally disappointed. Let's start with the bad so we can end on a good note. Bad: TACOS! Got the fried chicken, al pastor, and grilled chicken taco. Pork was the only meat with decent flavor, but it and the grilled chicken were both dry, dry, dry. The grilled chicken was lukewarm. The fried chicken taco had barely any flavor... Reminiscent of a fried chicken sandwich from any fast food chain, some iceberg and a chicken chunk. On top of all that these things were expensive... 4-5 bucks per taco! Disappointed. Indifferent: Margarita. Had better, had worse. But for 8 bucks that Bakersfield marg is looking much better for a dollar less. The chips and salsa were nothing to write home (Yelp?) about. Chips were fried in-house but nothing outstanding. The verde salsa was overly-limey and smoked peanut salsa tried to be edgy but kinda fell flat. Not inedible but nothing I'd seek out. Cute little spot in Main Strasse. The décor and ambiance are really nice, as others have noted, it's a bit loud but not unbearable. There was some confusion when we walked in as it says to see the host for seating, but there was no host around. About 3 groups piled up in the small doorway before he appeared. Great drink menu, I had the spicy margarita, which was indeed smoky and spicy. I wouldn't say it was super strong and for $8 it sure had a lot of ice in it. We started with the guacamole and salsas, all were pretty good and the peanut one is a fun change of pace. We had to ask for more chips and the server happily brought them. As others have said, it would be nice to be able to order an assortment of tacos. Luckily, there were 4 of us, so we were able to share. The shrimp tacos were the highlight, the goat were the lowlight. We had the fried ice cream for dessert, which was delicious. The perfect amount for four people to share. Our server was friendly and helpful with the drink choices, but seemed a little overwhelmed. We had to ask for appetizer plates and our empty dinner plates sat in front of us longer than preferred. Kudos for most improved and it is now amazing! This place has always been super cute with pretty good food, but when it first opened the services was meh and the prices weren't in line with the neighborhood. Now, the happy hour (pitcher of jalapeño margaritas for $20, among other things) is a real stand out on the block. Their food portions seem more substantial with less up charges for things that are free elsewhere. Their tacos are more extensive than Bakersfield but are similar in quality. The peanut salsa is different but great, queso also great. Sometimes the service is still spotty but overall I really love that Frida has adapted to the neighborhood and really competes via its awesome specials. read more

Stopped in with hubs for dinner. Waited about ten minutes to be seated at a table that had been empty the whole time we waited. Used the restroom. No tp (but I did find it in the cabinet!) and the soap dispenser was malfunctioning (makes ya wonder how the workers are getting their hands clean). Waited for what appeared to be the only server working. She arrived about ten minutes after we were seated. Had the house margarita. Extremely sweet and average tasting. We had the queso and chopped salad. Neither was exceptional. The server took her time refilling drinks and bringing our check. Just wasn't anything I'd recommend. I walked in at 6:00 on a Friday and was seated right away, which seemed like a bad sign to me. I was surprised to find, they have by far the best queso I have ever had! It makes my heart and my stomach so happy! The margaritas are strong and delicious (make sure you have a ride home if you'll be drinking more than one). I love the chalupitas and the lively atmosphere. Covington is one of my favorite places to hang out because there are so many options to go once you are there. You can have a bite and hit another spot in the same neighborhood. Frida's is owned by the same couple that owns Otto's which has long been one of my favorite places so I wasn't surprised that I fell in love. They really know how to create a place that makes me want to spend time there. I love the food but I especially love having a local spot I can meet friends and enjoy my evening!! They don't take reservations and they draw as steady crowd but you can leave your phone number and they will call you when your table is ready so you can feel free to roam around. I live nearby and love all the new restaurants going up in Covington and this has been one of the most popular it seems. My fiance, mom, and myseld ate there last night and I left not wanting to go back. All the food was cold or cool (we got there early too so it's not like they were busy) the corn on the cob was not even warm but very cold as were the taco's. The taco's were bland and under seasoned. Had to pay for chips and salsa and the salsa was terrible. The salsa plate was three different options and the only that was good was not even salsa but more a peanut puree (which was very good, just not salsa at all). The tradtional 'salsa' that the plate came with tasted like v-8 juice with tiny chuncks of onion and cilantro; bland, boring, and un-inspiring. Shame, I had such high expectations too, sadly, will not be going back and would not reccomend. read more

We checked out Frida this past weekend in Covington. The location is great as it's right off Main street offering you plenty of places to hop around if interested. Frida has both indoor and outdoor and seating. We had a drink at the bar while waiting for an outdoor table which was available faster than expected for a Friday evening. Across the street there was live music which we could hear from our table outside. We ordered the house margarita to drink along with a side of queso. I'm a big fan of the queso at authentic mexican restaurants, Frida's was a little different but still good! For dinner we decided to split the chicken burrito and also opted to try the salsa sampler. The burrito was delicious and after tasting the guac that was on top of it we wished we would have ordered a side of guac instead of the salsa. The salsa wasn't my favorite but then again glad we can say we tried it. Happy with our experience overall and will go back I'm sure at some point. read more

I'll start with the positives. I LOVE the decor. Bright, inviting, interesting furniture and unique design touches everywhere you look. I took photos all over the restaurant (during our 1.5 hour wait time) I also loved the mezcal feature within the cocktail offerings. I had never tried mezcal before coming here, and loved the lesson one of the bartenders was kind enough to give me. Very strange unnameable flavor but very cool to try something new! We loved our cocktails- my friends had the Frida and I tried the Diva & Our lady of Mezcal. I'm a sucker for any drink with egg whites and all of the drinks did not disappoint. What was disappointing was the food! After waiting an hour and a half, we were seated at a table right by the front door. Our waitress was very upbeat and helpful, and we ordered the queso to start. The chips were very dark and VERY overcooked. I like a good crunch but this was way too much. The queso is served in cast-iron skillets identical to bakersfield's presentation, but not as satisfying. The mix of three cheeses gave it a great full flavor, but the consistency was quite chunky and seemed to be completely cooled off and solidified very quickly. We all got tacos- another issue here. You can order 2 or 3 tacos, but they have to be the same type. This was a bummer for us, as there were 8 or 9 tacos to choose from. We ended up getting the goat, pastor, and gobernador (shrimp) tacos.I wasn't a fan of the tough flour tortillas, I would have loved the option to have corn tortillas personally. The flavor of the shrimp taco was good, as well as the pastor, however the pastor was very tough and hard to chew. Both were good, but nothing exciting compared to the assortment of other taco joints around the area. It was my first time trying goat and I was not a fan at all. This may have just been a personal thing but it tasted very gamey to me and I was unable to finish it. Everyone at my table wasn't thrilled with the tacos, especially considering how long we had waited to get them. Friiiiiiiiida!!!!!!! Well at least that's how I imagine it would be spelled if William Wallace was dining here. We stopped by on a Thursday night with a group of six and were quickly met with a hour and forty five minute wait... Yowza. If you can make reservations, do it. They have maybe three tables that can accommodate a party of that size. That part didn't bother me though because there are plenty of good places to get a stiff drink close by. After receiving the text of glory we made our way back and were seated at a nice round table in the back right in the middle of the action. As other people have noted the decor is nice and the ambiance was nice. I didn't feel as if the music was too loud though like others have mentioned. We all started off with some cocktails, the Nectar del Diablo was my favorite, and some tasty apps (chips and salsa platter with queso on the side). Sadly the peanut salsa was my favorite and most unique part of the entire meal. After apps we ordered our tacos. You can get 2-3 tacos at different price points but you cannot mix and match the tacos. Not cool. Luckily I had the lady friend with me so we could easily split some tacos and there was no need to put my blue face paint and kilt on. Overall the experience was OK but I don't feel as if the food had any pop. I'd definitely give it a shot because it seems like things are getting better as time goes on. read more

My son-in-law, daughter and two grandchildren had just returned from a trip to Hawaii. It was cold and damp in Cincinnati. Thatcher had to work tonight so my daughter Katie suggested we enjoy eating Mexican at a restaurant we had not tried before. It was around 6:00 pm and parking nearby on the street was a little difficult. Once we were inside the restaurant we could finally relax. We were quickly seated at a table in the back and served water while we decided what to order. We are queso fans so our first choice was a small order of chips and queso. We also chose to split a beef quesadilla & a steak burrito.The queso dip with corn was served in a skillet. It was hot, perfectly cheesy and golden brown on the top. It was more than enough for the bucket of crispy chips brought to our table. The quesadilla was lightly crispy on the outside and stuffed with delicious beef and cheese. We really liked it. The burrito was of a good portion size, lightly crispy on the outside and with a good balance of rice and steak inside. My grandson liked the rice. We could not finish all the food and asked for takeout containers. Our server was friendly and attentive and the wait for the food was no more than 10 minutes. My daughter plans to return here with her husband sometime in near future and I would do the same. The prices are very reasonable and the food is very good. Three of us visited Frida at 9:00 on a Friday night and were seated right away. It's hard not to compare to Bakersfield OTR, which has a comparable menu but is nearly impossible to get in if you are hungry and don't want to wait. We were escorted up a narrow staircase we would never have noticed to a second dining room with eclectic, fun decor. We sat at a round table in gigantic lounge chairs which were not at all meant to be at a dining table, but they were super comfortable when leaning back. On a warm, humid night, this room did not feel cool enough, but it was not unbearable. The room also reverberated with loud conversations from other tables, sometimes obnoxiously loud. So, ambiance? 50/50. The food, however, was mostly outstanding. The thick, cheesy baked queso had corn mixed in and a few pepper slices on top, and was a perfect match for the huge bucket of tortilla chips it came with. I also "sort of" enjoyed a Oaxacan Mule featuring Mescal (Frida likes Mescal) and ginger beer. It was a bit smoky, tasting a bit like it was infused with chipotle powder. For dinner, I had a fried chicken taco and an al pastor taco. The al pastor was perfect. A hint of spice balanced with sweet pineapple. The fried chicken taco was nothing special in comparison, but still worth trying. I hoped to have room at the end of the meal for the chocolate torte with fried ice cream or the tres leches cake, but couldn't make it happen. Next time. And there will be a next time. I've missed Bakersfield but am too impatient to wait an hour or more for a table. I'm glad I have this option for the same (or better?) quality food. Overall I'd give Frida a 4 out of 5 for delicious food and mostly enjoyable atmosphere. Get here before everyone else finds out about this gem! read more

This is only for reservation issues - not food. We put our names in for a table of 8 at 7:20 on a Saturday. I know that's a big group but they told us 1 - 1.5 hours. We went next door and after 1 hour 40 minutes went back to check. We were told 5 - 10 minutes so we tabbed out and went over to Frida's. Still no table. Several 4 tops next to each other turned over while we stood there and after 2 hours 15 minutes (we're standing on the sidewalk) we gave up and went across the street for dinner. Need some better seating strategy if you don't take reservations! At least tell us you don't have a table rather than make us wait 2.5 hours and still not give us a table. We moved to Mainstrasse 1.5 years ago and we have gone to Frida at least once a month. Our favorites are the prickly pear margaritas, salsa sampler, quest, vegan quesadilla (with cheese!), and Brussels sprout taco. This would easily be a 4 star review, but for two reasons I needed to do 3: 1. They stopped doing a FANTASTIC brunch and 2. They stopped serving their FANTASTIC fried chicken taco!! I have no reason to come to their Taco Tuesday ($2 chicken tacos) anymore - roasted chicken just ain't the same. Happy hour is fantastic - cheap margeritas, and the house margerita is great. Love the atmosphere! With all the Mexican in Cincinnati it's easy to try a new place every couple weeks. Frida's decor is quirky, contemporary, and bright. My friends and I sat at the bar and ordered margaritas while we waited for a table. We ended up just staying at the bar since it was pretty comfortable. My friends ordered the chips and salsa for an appetizer and those were good. I ended up ordering the chicken taco and the shrimp taco. The chicken was juicy and very flavorful! The shrimp was spicy, juicy, and the grape tomatoes made a great addition. I wished our server was a bit more knowledgeable about the food. She didn't tell us much about the menu and didn't describe any of the food for us. Service was great and she was nice but I enjoy hearing an employee's excitement and his/her take on the food they serve. Overall, it was a good experience and I'll probably be back to try more tacos! read more

We got two very mediocre tacos with corn shells that fell apart while we ate them, a pozole that was not a pozole (it tasted like it had chicken stew stock and cinnamon in it), and an okay ceviche. The ceviche was probably the best thing we at. The chips were bland. The margaritas were okay, but Mazunte makes one that is 1000x better and cheaper. I spend half as much at Mazunte for more food that is WAY better. Never going back. The wait staff was pleasant and I like the decor, so two stars. read more

We waited for about 30 minutes to be called, which is fine, but the problem is we sat unserved for 45. I normally don't let things bug me because I get the job can be stressful, but apparently even I have limits. And, when we finally were served, not even an apology or acknowledgement for our wait and lack of attention for almost an hour. Now, when I got some booze in me, and their margarita was like drinking straight mescal, and the food showed up, it was good. Decently priced and fresh tasting. But the deal breaker for me was the lack of any acknowledgement by the staff and being stranded outside. So, if that debacle hadn't happened, I'd go back. But, as a closet fat kid, the scar from being without food or beer for an hour for no reason is hard to overcome read more

My only complaint about this cool place was the seating; it is limited and INTIMATE. As a 7month pregnant lady, it wasn't super comfortable getting to my seat but nothing is comfortable nowadays. My husband got the charred prickly pear margarita and it was delicious, definitely alcoholic, and had a pleasant and unusual flavor profile. The queso was AMAZABALLS!! Served in a cute little cast iron it is lava hot and so good. We tried the carne asada taco, shrimp taco, pork taco, and chicken taco. They were all delicious, great corn tortillas, fresh and light salsas and sauces, and definitely worth it. We will definitely be getting the chicken and carne asada again. read more

Having been to the home of Mezcal, I was quite excited about this mezcal bar. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. From a mezcal stand point specifically - there was no mezcal list, only 1 of the bar tenders knew anything about mezcal and the selection was fairly limited. The tacos were also a bit underwhelming. I got the goat, fish and brussel sprouts. Each taco is $5. The goat and brussel sprouts were pretty good, but there was barely any fish in my taco (and other people had the same experience). The appetizers were good - queso and guacamole. Overall this place potential but needs some work. Tip: if you are getting mezcal, get individual ones not the flights. read more

I'd give 4-5 stars because the food was fantastic, but the music was so insanely loud that we not only could barely talk but I've now got the start of a migraine. Be aware, if you order a cocktail you're gonna wait (a long long time). I don't know why other bars can manage to do all handmade craft cocktails in less than an Ice Age worth of waiting yet Frida is slow enough to actually warn you of the wait when you order.
