This was my first time consuming the well respected establishment of Frida's Cocina and Cantina. Usually my scores on Mexican food and Tex Mex cuisine can be viewed as quite critical amongst my peers because I spent many years in Houston, TX where Mexican is king. I ordered the Steak Fajita Burrito, which included a special gravy and cheese on top of an excellent fajita paired with tasty rice and refried beans. Words are not sufficient enough to describe how my tastebuds were taken on a rollercoaster ride of flavor. My peer ordered the Hawaiian Fajita which was cooked and served and a real pine apple. I was told that the flavor over delivered. I could not recommend this enough. read more

It was a nice day and I decided I wanted a patio and some margaritas. I have yet to try Fridas so I gave it a try. I love the sunken patio which is perfect for relaxing in the shade. When we got seated outside by the friendly staff, we were given menus and free chips and salsa. As I nibbled on the chips and salsa which were just okay I browsed the drink menu. There's a full bar here and plenty of options. Over the course of the afternoon I tried the Frida's Rita and the wonderful rabbit. Both drinks weren't in your face with the tequila mezcal, they were mixed nicely and had a well rounded flavor. I much preferred the Woderful rabbit though as it tasted less watered down and the ginger beer paired with the mezcal was almost quenching. Overall if you're looking for a relaxing spot to enjoy Mexican cocktails this is a good spot! We did feel rushed to get out of there, and maybe it was because we weren't ordering food. Salsa is great and the food is always solid and consistent. Best Tex-Mex I can find in BHM.... The main dining room can be loud but the food makes it worth it. If they invested in some sound control it would remedy that problem reality. read more

First time a Frida's with some friends! It's a casual Mexican restaurant that has a HUGE menu. We were seated quickly upon arrival and immediately served chips and salsa (the salsa was delicious, might I add)! What we ordered: -Taco Salad (added steak) -Shrimp Tacos -Rumba Bowl (added shredded chicken and substituted white rice for Mexican rice) I can only attest to how the Rumba bowl tasted, but everyone's food came out incredibly fast. The bowl was a decent portion. It wasn't a ton of food, but it was the *right* amount of food- a fair serving that I would've made for myself at home. The bowl was good and my friends liked their dishes too. My overall consensus: Frida's is your typical Mexican restaurant. If I lived in this area I may eat here more often, but it's not necessarily something I'm likely to drive too from the outskirts of Hoover. I can probably get slightly cheaper and similar Mexican food closer to home. I'm happy to have tried it! read more

Awesome spot! We dined outside for lunch on cinco de mayo. Frida's had great specials for the holiday, and were having a mariachi band come perform later. Gratis chips and salsa (as God intended). I thought the chips were the perfect crisp, and the salsa was tasty with some very fresh looking ingredients. The patio is sunken in off the sidewalk of English Village, so you don't have to look at the cars on the street. I loved how colorful everything is! I ordered the large margarita, which was $8.99 on special. It came on the rocks, but with a little bit of frozen marg in it! I loved this!!! Built-in ice that won't water down your drink, GENIUS! I had the tamales for lunch. Scrumptious, no complaints. The rice was really good, but I thought the beans lacked a little gusto. Over-pureed or something. Love the blue and white plates. Such a great spot! It was already busy even early on a weeknight, so definitely make a reservation or come early. The margaritas are powerful (in the best way), and the food was fresh and full of flavor. The vibe is lively and colorful with lots of traditional Día de los Muertos touches that make the place feel festive and authentic. Service was excellent too. We came here on a Sunday for lunch, and y'all, the service is wonderful. Super friendly, and they recommended the Charro beans for my Mom, and she, my wife and I all thought they were some of the best beans we've ever had. Their Street Corn is incredible, with flavors that pops like a balloon, and the chips, salsa and queso are among the finest we've had. My Mom has the Fajitas Hawaiianas, which is served in a halved Pineapple, and it was excellent. I had Tacos Al Carbon (with steak) and they were even better than I thought they'd be - maybe the best I've had before. We were full enough that we couldn't try any dessert, sadly, but it was still a wonderful meal, and we all look forward to many return visits! read more

As always, let's start with the chips and salsa. Chips are ok. Like mine a little thicker. The salsa is tasty but I like mine a little chunkier. The margarita is tasty. I like the dollop of frozen on top of my rocks. The patio is nice and shady. They violated my Mexican lunch menu imperative that number 8 be a taco, enchilada, rice & beans. My enchiladas were muy bueno. My daughter says this is the best Spanish rice this side of Roscoe Wilson Elementary which is saying something. The service was good. The food was very basic, especially for the price point. I've honestly never been served fajitas with only two flour tortillas at any restaurant, and because I only received two, I had to pay extra for more -- when most places automatically give you at least three. On top of that, we were nickel-and-dimed for nearly everything -- soda water was $3, we were charged extra for lime, and nothing felt included. We are not cheap at all, but this felt excessive and ridiculous. On a positive note, the skinny margarita was clean and good, and the service was pretty good and attentive. Very disappointing! When you go to a Mountain Brook restaurant you should expect good food. This was anything but....good location and nice ambiance but otherwise blah. We came in and ordered cheese dip for an appetizer. These were same bagged chips and watery cheese that you get at a strip center Mexican place located between a nail salon and Vape shop. We told the waitress that the cheese was watery and could we get some better...she just took it away. The manager came over and said that cheese dips were different in different restaurants.....naw dude this is the same watered down stuff that comes in a 55 gallon drum from Sysco for the cheap Mexican restaurants. Ordered "steak" nachos and a chicken burrito. Nachos-Mystery meat posing as steak and a lot of lettuce. Burrito- a bit of chicken and a lot of watery refried beans. Again like every dime a dozen Mexican restaurant in metro Birmingham. We told the manager it was very disappointing and his solution was to take it away (as I guess he knew they had nothing better). There is a huge opportunity for good Tex-Mex in Birmingham and we were hoping this was the exception. Not so. Go to Huntsville, Atlanta, Nashville and even Montgomery and a hole in the wall will be better than this place. I was pleasantly surprised that mine had sugar on the rim instead of salt, although I was not asked about either. The chips were fresh, light and crispy. The salsa was a little spicy but good. I ordered a chicken fajita salad. It was a large serving of lettuce with grilled chicken and a creamy cilantro dressing. I counted 4 black beans and a handful of corn kernels. There were several nice chunks of avocado. My biggest disappointment was the chicken. There was no spice that I could taste. It was basically a grilled chicken salad. Our waitresses were nice & helpful but we got the feeling they were ready for us to leave. They did start getting busy around 530, so I guess they needed our table. read more

Haven't been here because I read reviews and then forgot about it. Stopped today and well, the food, patio and service were fantastic. Granted, we love California fresh Mexican and we do not need a staff member every three minutes. Ambience is San Diego relaxed and I love that we have this within 12 minutes of my driveway. Thin chips, thin old school cheese dip, fresh thin but tasty salsa. It hit all my favorites. Guacamole was fresh. Steak was large cubes and taste like that old place down 280. Don't sleep on Frida's. I came here with a friend the second day they opened up which was this past Tuesday. The interior and the outdoor patio were very beautifully decorated and welcoming. There was a good number of people both dining and working here. They started us off with free chips and salsa and kept refilling them for us. We then ordered a small guacamole to share which was very fresh and delicious. I then chose the Quesadilla Suprema with pastor as my meat. It was one of the best pastors I have ever had. The meat was so juicy and tender. There was also some sort of a fruit in it and a lot of cheese. One of the best quesadillas I have ever had. I knew there would be a bit of a wait coming in here being their second day and there would probably be some kinks and learning. We waited a good bit for our food and our checks, but it was expected. Our fourth visit to Frida's, we really enjoy it, and it is competing with our regular spots. Open Sunday and Monday which is rare in Bham. I love black beans and my husband loves fish tacos (the shrimp tacos are very good too), and the tortilla chips and tortillas are really light. Tried out this new spot in English village! We sat on the porch in the evening with string lights above that added to a pleasant atmosphere. We had the birra tacos which were great! Gonna have to say I was quite impressed with Frida's. The chips are thin n hot, the salsa is tangy without a lot of spicy heat. The beer, cold! I had the steak/chicken n jumbo shrimp Fajitas with corn tortillas. A really good choice the steak was nicely seasoned and thickly sliced. You could see if came from a piece of steak, not pre-sliced, chips of beef, like so many other places. Same for the chicken. The shrimp were split n grilled in the shell. The service was on point and the servers were friendly and always there checking on our needs. The facility was clean, open n bright. If you're looking for a more authentic Mexican dish, you'll probably enjoy it here. New favorite place. read more
