One of the classic Mexican spots in Birmingham. They have the scrumptious thin, white cheese dip. I had the steak fajitas and thought the price was fantastic. Normally an order of fajitas is over $20, but it was closer to $16/17 here. I had a prickly pear margarita that was pretty dang good. I will say, service seemed to take a while. A couple of my friends barely got their drinks before our food arrived. This place was hoppin' on a Friday night, though. Definitely family friendly. read more

The food here is always on point. Unfortunately, today our server wasn't so great. We sat for twenty minutes after we finished eating, while he stood at the bar with the other gentleman working there. When he did come, he only laid the ticket down. He didn't ask if we needed anything. I had to ask for a take out container. I also ordered the steak fajita nachos and got chicken. It's a very family friendly restaurant. We got a to-go order on September 16 in Homewood, Alabama. My wife ordered one chalupa, one cheese enchilada, and rice and beans. I ordered the burrito poblano with steak. We ordered cheese dip for 2.75 and chips and salsa. The food was bland across the board. Nothing tasted like it had been seasoned at all. The online menu says the cheese dip is 2.75, but you get to choose your size. We never got an option to choose a size, and we received a little 2 oz souffle cup with barely melted and flavorless cheese. The salsa tasted like crushed tomatoes out of a can. I couldn't tell that there were onions or anything else in it, and there was absolutely no hint of lime. The chips were burnt and, of course, cost extra. I specifically asked to make sure there was plasticware in the bag, and the lady said there was. There was one set for two meals, so I worked through my steak meal with a spoon. All around, an absolutely awful experience, and the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Complete waste of $45. Do yourself a favor and go eat literally anywhere else. read more

We were staying at a nearby hotel as a halfway point on our vacation to Florida and came here for dinner on a whim. With 2 small kids we value somewhere quick and easy. When I tell you we have NEVER been somewhere so QUICK we were amazed! Our food came out in maybe 3 minutes, and it was 10/10 delicious. Maya Mexican Restaurant is my favorite restaurant ever in Birmingham! Me and my friends go there all the time. The staff is so sweet and awesome. They always recognize us and treat us so well! The food is always so delicious. I get the grilled chicken tacos with lettuce and cheese. The chicken is cooked perfectly and I love the simplicity of the tacos. I also get hot sauce on the side and sometimes rice and beans. Me and my friends get a queso for the table to enjoy with our chips. I want to start by saying we were a larger party but we came in during a slower time (2-4). Service was slow we would ask for things and then the server would be off giving drinks to other tables. I ordered a jumbo margarita peach flavored and it was clearly lime flavored you can tell by even looking at the color, which is fine but when the ticket came and I still had margarita left I asked about the price difference between the peach and house and the waitress needed to grab the manager and the manager told me they make the margaritas from scratch with frozen peaches and he watched them make it for me and that mine is peach lol long story short, he wasn't willing to change the price. We enjoyed all of our dishes and had no complaints about food. The space can be loud with lots of people, but you can still talk without yelling at each other. The service was good, but it was annoying that one person had to wait an extra 5-10 minutes for their food to come out so it made it awkward for the rest of us to either eat or wait. Plus the server forgot the tortillas for 3 of our meals and we had nearly finished the food by the time he brought them. If the service had been better then it would have been 5 stars. This place was hoppin' on our Sunday through the area, with teens to seniors, which is always a great sign...and it held to the reviews and hopes. The food was quick, hot, and dang delicious. Add to it that lunch specials worked on the weekend too, and it was an added bonus that it was borderline inexpensive. My ribeye tacos with rice and beans were uner $10 and my companion had a chicken/rice/cheese plate for the same. The ambience was simple and cute with flags and Christmas lights hanging fro the ceiling and the room was just a vibe of chatting and happy. We walked into a busy time during service, with nearly every table full, creating a high energy level. Colorful Mexican flags hung from the ceiling, along with plenty of Christmas lights. After an amazing massage I decided to stop here, since I was in the area. I was last here like 2 years ago for a YELP event and I enjoyed everything. I ordered the same thing ... El Jaguar burrito with chicken. I didn't love the chicken as much as I loved the steak from my prev visit. My meal was fresh and the rice and beans were yummy! Staff is always friendly here. We came in as a party of 4. We arrived at 5:45pm, and we didn't get greeted until 6:03. We had to witness two tables get greeted before us. When the server finally came, there was no apology for the wait. He made it seem like us wanting water and specialty drinks was an inconvenience to him. We got our drinks before our water and we had to ask 3 times for that. When our food came, it was decent. Great place!!! Typical Mexican ambiance, Christmas lights on ceiling, flags, decor. It is on shopping strip (next to ACE so plenty of parking). Maya's was packed with kids, families, college kids and elders. Food was delicious! I had steak fajitas and had to take half of my plate home it was such a large portion! and really authentic tasting!! Both the frozen and on the rocks house margaritas were perfect! My daughter had the burrito and we joked that it was the size of a small infant! She said it tasted delicious with the rice, vegetables, meat packed inside. Our server, Tori, greeted us as soon as we sat down with chips and salsa and was prompt in getting our order and serving our food even though they were really busy! The food was delicious and the service was great. My grandsons loved the tacos and the cheeseburger. The wait was not long and everyone seemed to be having fun, the place was very lively. They had coconut as the featured flavor for their Happy Hour margarita. I enjoyed it frozen and I definitely could taste the coconut. My server helped me decide on my entree of a beef chimichanga with a side of rice and beans. They did not skimp on the beef. The food arrived at the right temperature and I didn't have to wait long after ordering. I could have easily made this into two meals but didn't know how well it would reheat. In the Birmingham, Alabama area on business and I stumbled across here and after a quick check on Yelp and its positive reviews, I decided here was for dinner. As I pulled in the parking lot, I found it moderately busy. I was quickly seated and they placed before me a decent salsa and chips. Scanning the menu, I saw a few options, but when the server, Marco, recommended the poblano burrito, I went with it and added a chicken enchilada (hey, go big or go home). So, the food was brought out pretty quickly. Tearing into the chicken enchilada, for a moment, I wish I went with Marco's recommendation of the enchilada. But let us not diminish the quality of the poblano burrito. This was excellent. So both together added up to an extraordinary meal. I want to finalize this review with an accolade to Marco. I believe he chose his recommendations due to what he liked and not the price point. His recommendations were not the higher cost items, but items that after trying, I would return here.
