I was so excited to go to FSS after they won a Michelin star. However, I left disappointed and will likely not be returning. We got the tasting menu (with the additional lobster snack), and got 3 drinks total. After tax and tip, this meal cost us ~$600 dollars for 2 people. At that price point this should've been the best meal I've ever had in philly - or one of the best in my life tbh. But I was so disappointed in each dish. Almost everything fell flat to my palate. With small bite presentations such as this, I firmly believe that each bite needs to taste like a flavor bomb in my mouth. Instead, it all tasted very 2 dimensional and was severely lacking in some acidity or spice. Didn't even bother taking a picture of all the dishes. I don't believe FSS is on par with other Michelin star meals I've had, especially not at this price point. Overall, don't waste your money at FSS if you want to celebrate an occasion. You're honestly better off going to a starr restaurant and paying less than half the price ‍

I didn't take pics because I was too distracted by how good my drinks were. I walked in without a reservation and after waiting a few moments I was able to get a seat at the bar. The staff was great about getting me seated and taking care of me while I was there. At the bartenders suggestion, I had The Assassins Handbook. It was the perfect amount of smooth and spice. My intention was to try something different but I ended up having two of the same drink. It was so good. I also had the smoked herring spaghetti which was delicious. The next time I'm in Philly I would love to go back and try some other items on the menu.

False prophet - smoky, nice drink Offshore banking - really like this sweeter drink, unique, strong, tasty, unique flavor Free sparkling wine for returning, nice bonus Appetizer seafood based, scallop was my favorite of the three, coconut hinted foam Only time I've had caviar that I enjoyed not too salty. Potato soup was good but not as special Squid ink pasta with clam diced up - delicious, slight kick, one of my favorites Sweetbread - unique, tastes like fatty chicken with finely chopped ratatouille - tasty, different Fish - slightly undercooked fish - bread was buttery smell but not that strong buttered taste, great texture Pork adobe - one of my lesser favorites but still good, crispy top Temperature controlled tea. Warm but not too hot to burn yourself Short rib - very unique, flavorful, almost slow cooked but still hard texture - great tasting, one of the favorites 3 desserts one of which was free. Strawberry tarte was great and enjoyed it but the ice particles on the first part of the dessert was so unique - flavorful ice to complement the dish. Bonus extra chocolate pastry - hard on the outside and gooey on the inside. Unique texture just the least favorite of the 3. Each dish has a flower or decorative piece carefully placed. So well crafted. Some I have no idea how you would make and would require so much practice for certain dishes. Service was outstanding. Anytime you walked by they would excuse themselves and let you walk past them before carrying on. They folded my napkin as I went to the restroom. Upstairs ambiance is more formal restaurant vibe with the bar downstairs where you can order à la Carte. Bathroom was probably the biggest let down - small and hard to lock the door. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants in terms of food, with perfect service. For the price and value it's a must. Walked away full (not always the case with tasting menus), dishes were intricate and delicious, flawless service. Would love to show all my friends this place and come back. Upgrade the bathroom and there would be nothing left to adjust. Food: 5/5 Ambiance: 4.95/5 Service: 5/5

On a recent trip to Philly, Friday Saturday Sunday came highly recommended. Their upstairs dining room is reservation only and features a tasting menu for $165 a person. This trip was planned kind of last minute so we weren't able to snag a res and instead, opted to sit downstairs at "The Lover's Bar". The host seems to only handle upstairs dining so for bar seating, you go straight to the bartenders and let them know you want a seat. They add you to a "waitlist" which is essentially just a mental list they keep tabs of. We stood with drinks waiting for about 90 minutes before some seats became available. My ~one~ complaint about this place is that if you're going to have people standing around waiting for a while, add hooks for bags along the back wall. Sitting my purse down on the ground or on the small countertop next to a candle wasn't exuding hospitality and left a bad first impression for me. However, all was forgiven once we got those coveted bar seats. The bartenders were amazing. Efficient, friendly, personable. The dirty martini wasn't my favorite and I would've preferred different olives but the food was incredible. The steak tartare was in my top five favorite steak tartares. They served it alongside crudite for me since I'm gluten free. This was SUCH a nice touch and something restaurants rarely offer to do. The steak was also incredible and beautifully plated. The chicken liver pate is a fan favorite here as well, and while it wasn't my favorite, my boyfriend loved it. We also had the salad - I can't remember exactly what it was but I do remember it was lovely. Perhaps the most memorable thing about this bar is the unique contraption created by the bar director. It uses the fibonacci sequence to randomly generate a perfectly balanced cocktail. Spin the wheel and let the experiment begin! It's such an ingenious idea. I definitely recommend you add Lover's Bar to the top of your list!

Deserving of their Michelin star. Food was uniquely seasoned. Loved the snacks and egg caviar. Service was excellent with staff knowledgeable about wines. Wine pairing had generous pours so don't order cocktails and don't drive yourself home. Sit either by the window or at the table in the corner overlooking restaurant. Interesting murals on wall. Worth visiting and will return.

We tried the tasting menu for a birthday. It was a fun experience. The service was very attentive and kept the courses flowing at a reasonable pace. The flavors and presentation were inventive. We enjoyed the meal, but not sure if worth the cost for us. It may be that we don't ascribe as much value to the technical difficulty of each dish (I didn't eat much in preparation for this meal and came very hungry. Maybe I was too hungry and didn't appreciate the execution as much!) I especially enjoyed the duck, pull apart bread, soup, and miniature ice cream

A+ on the novelty of the courses and the presentation of the food. Also, I loved the decor and overall ambience of the restaurant. Friday Saturday Sunday set expectations extremely high with their price. I was hoping to have my mind blown with every single course, but I wasn't quite there with some of the courses. Specifically, it seemed like some of the courses were stomach fillers that weren't particularly exciting flavor wise, such as the fry bread that was on the menu during my visit and the dessert.

Took a while to get a reservation, but well worth the wait! Tasting menu was fantastic, appropriately portioned, and well paced. Very generous pours if you go with the wine pairing. Interior is intimate and well decorated. Bonus points for fab lighting.

Stopped by the Lovers Bar for a wonderful drink and dinner tasting menu experience. Decor and ambiance is so welcoming and cozy. The bar features all premium spirits and mixes, and the bartenders are high level professional mixologists able to make anything you desire! Spinning the wheel is a great experience and there are some quite exotic combinations on it. The drink I got was perfect and unique. Also ordered a few other classy cocktails which were mixed and made to perfection. As to the tasting menu, each course of the eight was plated and presented perfectly with nothing out of place. Each course was brought out and fully explained what it was. The flavors complemented each other so well, and all the savories or sweets were at maximum levels. Just flawless dishes plate after plate with the highest quality ingredients executed with amazing skill. Definitely one of the top restaurants in this city from food to staff to ambiance. I will be so happy to see the owner chef duo and entire restaurant team earn well deserved Michelin star(s) next month. Phenomenal and flawless all around. Thanks

I know I've been sleeping on the food scene in Philly nowadays, but I'm happy I finally got to come try this place I thought the food was delicious and was an extremely fair price for the tasting menu. Nothing was a super stand out, just an all around great meal.

Vibes: classy, intimate but approachable; bring a friend or a few; on the bustling, louder side Tasting notes: - Snacks: appreciated the rundown and then the order of eating; favorite was the tender scallop with rich, aromatic coconut foam - Eggs and caviar: a surprising soup that almost comes across as a chowder in its creaminess and savoriness - Pasta: absolutely indulgent, cheesy and umami rich bites - Sweetbreads: mushroomy with an excellently crunchy exterior - Halibut: fish itself was flaky and tender; all I wanted to do was dip the fragrant, buttery bread in the lobster sauce - Koshihikari rice: served with perfectly executed duck; a little smoky, a little crispy, incredibly balanced; my favorite of the night - Short rib: extremely buttery slices, felt like I was eating wagyu - Allium tea: warm and comforting, much like a kombu broth, a nice interlude before the finale - Dessert: completely surprised by the variety; favorite was the fudgy devil's food cake that was lightened by passionfruit curd and crispy meringue Other thoughts: - Service is friendly and warm - We opted to share the wine pairing which had generous enough pours for two of us to enjoy - Gorgeous plating and wonderful explanations of each dish, which were fairly complex - Tasting menu was super filling, and we ended up taking the caneles home Impression: I can absolutely see why this has been the talk of the town for so long! I will be dreaming about the meal for a long time!

Best meal I've had in Philly so far. Michelin worthy. 8 course tasting and the whole meal was incredible but the first 2 dishes blew us away. Great start! So much flavor in the 3 pieces of the snack dish, and love the presentation! The "eggs" of eggs & caviar was delicious. Again, love the presentation. The corn caramelle also so flavorful. Not what I was expecting. These 3 were my favorite. I wouldn't normally order sweetbread so I told myself not to think about it when I saw it on the menu, but nicely done. There was a crispiness but I think I would have liked more of a crunch in this. Overall, pleasantly surprised with this dish. I enjoyed the sauce the fish was in and the homemade coco bread dipped in that gave a comforting feel. The rice & duck dish had a strong smokiness. Very good but at this point I was getting full and couldn't finish it. The steak also very good and loved the puree. Nice creaminess to it. To finish, we had the black tea cake. I think that was toasted milk on top. Wow. Both rich and light. It's our anniversary so we also got a couple other desserts. They were all tasty and that chocolate one was another surprise once you bite in. Definitely needed the coffee at the end to help with dessert. Too much to finish but it was all so good. Outstanding meal, excellent service, and I absolutely loved the R&B playing. Great vibe. So satisfied with this experience and strongly recommend everyone visit them.

Ask the Community - Friday Saturday Sunday

How long does the tasting menu take?

    A minimum of 2 hours.

Can you sit at bar and order a la carte or is the full restaurant a tasting menu?

We ate there last night (Friday night, Oct. 2023.) Walked in at 10:00pm and were seated pretty quickly at the bar. Bar menu is a la carte with limited choices, but very good. Dishes range from small to medium. Bartender (terrific woman!) told us…

Where is nearest parking? I Have great difficulty walking.

Looking on the BestParking app, looks like the closest parking option might be 2107 Sansom St or 2102 Sansom St. But it's also worth taking a pass by for street parking--we lucked into a space just steps from the restaurant. Also, keep in mind that…

Does anyone know what time of day they release the reservations?

First of the month, for the next month according to website. (Jan 1 for Feb reservations, for example).

Is it casual enough for shorts? Looks like a hot weekend.

I would say no. Perhaps the previous incarnation of the restaurant (back in the early 90s) would've had people wearing shorts, but this is now a pretty nice place, so shorts are likely out. When in doubt, polo shirts and slacks for guys and blouses…

Do they have any outdoor seats? And if so, can they be reserved? Thanks!

    No outdoor seating.

We get to experience items like mozzarella balls, heirloom tomatoes, maple glazed brussel sprouts, jammy tomatoes, and more all for a reasonable price. The salads and bowls are all well thought out combinations, but I like to mix it up a little bit by adding my favorites and subtracting other items. The beautiful thing is the total transparency of the price right on the app. As you build your salad or bowl, your final price is updated continuously. The app is great! My favorite meat protein is the roasted chicken. It is done REALLY WELL. Like... they deserve a prize of some kind for the chicken... at least for the Sweetgreen on 18th and Chestnut. I'm not as fond of the salmon or the garlic steak, but your mileage may vary. You might really like them. Every veggie is always super fresh. And service is always with a smile. Whoever is hiring the current crew is doing a great job because the food is always prepared really well and the servers are always really nice. Thank you, Sweetgreen, for your continued excellence!

Hot honey chicken bowl. Remove the sweet potatoes, swap the quinoa for a rice, and give me somethings that would provide different compliment for this bowl and it'd be a rockstar. For now, its fine. It's manageable but not cravable. It's an oddity on a menu that isn't tailored to my taste buds. So for that, its a win - not an amazing one but a serviceable one.
