Very interesting... coming into Philly this may have been one of my most anticipated meals. Pretzels, roast pork and cheesesteaks is a given high bar to start with so I knew those would be great. This was... off the beaten path Reddit inspired wild card but Italian seafood in South Philly, that's got "great meal" written all over it so the disappointment stings that much harder. We came about 10 minutes before our reservation and were told to hang at the bar, it's right around from check in but we were supposed to go outside again and enter thru the bar, weird but whatever 100 steps instead of 7. Bar is crowded but fine, mostly folks waiting for the bar. We get called at 7:25 for our 7:15 res, no big deal, they're new, I think? But it happens. Waitress is super friendly, we ask for recs and she mentions the top 3 on the menu and explains how the ordering goes. Up charge for a lobster ravioli special but thank the man jesus we didn't fall for that. For the two of us we get 3 "mains", pasta, and a side. My issue, and it's quite a big issue was the portion sizes, I'm not sure if we can order more but once that first dish came out I was already thinking about what to eat later in the night. We got the stuffed calamari, lobster and shells, and crab cakes as the mains and carbonara with fried dough to round out the sides. The calamari and lobster with shells come first. Again, I'm thinking about my meal to order after the meal already, the portions are essentially appetizer sized and if there's only one more "main" then something is very wrong. The calamari is good, I have no idea what it's stuffed with given the menu is vague and waitress says little but it's solid, just one stuffed squid per person. The red sauce is young and fresh tasting. The shells are a little crème brûlée sized ramekin with what I would guess is half a lobster tail. This would be a side dish anywhere else in the world. The crab cakes are some canned pasteurized deal that is not great. The carbonara had very little flavor and the pepper was not toasted at all and there purely for texture. I would pass on the only because the other two pastas have to be better than that. "Fried dough" is clearly just some garlic knots so whatever. Wherever you are, you have a comparable dish within a mile of you. Separate paragraph for the dessert, the sundae is pretty amazing, $14 extra but great textures with a caramelized banana and sprinkles that actually make a difference. I'm writing this still at the restaurant so my hope is a nice late dinner somewhere else after making my way back downtown. This could be a great place but you can't serve 3 apps as your main and pay $120 for 2 people in Philly. I really wanted to love this place but my heart would never forgive me and my stomach craves a real meal. read more

Hands down, some of the show stoppers came directly from the bar menu. You can't go wrong with hot, mouth watering, fried mozzarella thats stringy pull takes you from one end of the dining room to the next. After decimating the mozzarella, the real special bite comes from the steaming roasted pork sandwich served with a side of its very own au jus. Flavorful, juicy just like a warm hug. Some highlights from the dining menu, I just wouldn't pass up on reordering in the future: the whole Dungeness Crab + Lobster Francese. Although requiring some work, the Dungeness Crab hits it out of the park on flavor + natural butteriness. Ditch the side of melted butter it comes with, you'd be doing a great disservice to yourself for not savoring the crabs delicious Sicilian inspired seasoning. As far as the Lobster Francese goes, this dish stands out as one of the more refined + naturally rich dishes we had this evening. Comprised of some of our most favorite ingredients (butter, capers, decadent lobster) the trifecta pairing of all three of these ingredients rewards your mouth with the most beautiful, delicate symphony of flavors. Too good to pass up, a staple that just can't be missed. Aside from these showstoppers, the true heart of Bomb Bomb derives directly from those serving table side. Recently dined here with family. We did the $62 per person dinner. Every course was delicious but the serving sizes for a party of 4 were confusing. How do 4 people get one lobster tail to split, 2 small crab cakes, and 3 shrimp? Other options were reasonably portioned but they offered little description on their website prior to dining and getting in touch with them is difficult. I enjoyed what I ate but left hungry. Not sure the neighbors will frequent this new version of an area staple. read more

It's a matter of personal taste. I went to The Bomb Bomb with a party of 6. We go out often together, and all of our families are of Italian Heritage. My 3 star rating is a result of the average from everyone's opinion of our meals. Personally, I didn't care for the red sauce they use with the mussels. It had a strong red wine taste, and it wasn't thick. I prefer Marinara with a strong tomato and garlic taste. The Crab Gravy was "okay." I finished it, but it could have used more crab meat. Others in my party had Ravioli and gnocchi that they found enjoyable. I can definitely understand why this is a favorite place for the people who grew up with The Bomb Bomb in their neighborhood. I'm sure if I had grown up going here, I'd be accustomed to how they prepare their food. To be fair, they boast about how good their BBQ ribs are, but none of us tried them, so maybe they are what most people order. This place is a great happy hour. Honestly, the breaded chicken wing on the menu was something a local supermarket sells at the hot deli section so I would not get. Finally got to check out Bomb Bomb, this place was recommended by my boyfriend's family and we'd never been. Best way I can describe it is if EPCOT had a South Philly attraction, this would be it. This is an Italian bar/restaurant frozen in the 90s with great food and service. We ordered the chicken parm, linguine and clams, and the icebox cake. There was also bread and butter plus olive oil on the house. Everything was delicious, and I love that the cake came in a beer glass with 2 long spoons. Ok, I found this place on Yelp. This was my third choice. Because I was craving ribs. The first rib place wasn't open. Then, second place sold out ribs and everything. At this point, I was upset because I wanted some ribs on a nice day. I just want a ribs sandwich. I drove from Germantown Ave to the first place, was on Erie Ave, and second place was around Snyder Ave. And then I found this place Boom Boom. It was a bar/ restaurant located on the corner of a block. My gps got me their with no problem. I parked my car and walked down the street. When it and there was no one at the front,welcome you in the place had to rooms. The bar area and the back where the restaurant part was plus the kitchen and bathrooms. It was dark and dreary. Don't get me wrong, just a little from the two or four windows. and the front door was open with a little light coming in. So when I walked in, as I stated earlier, no one was at the front. I walked at this open, and it was people eating lunch. They looked at me, and I looked back. I they were wondering why this black lady looking at us. So I went back to the front and had a set at the bar. Waited for about 10 to 15 minutes, so I looked at the appt on Yelp and called the restaurant, and a lady answered and asked, "Can she help me I answered yes I'm in the font and would like to order. She told me that she would be right up here to take my oder she was helping out. Ok, she came out and asked me what I wanted. I told her to place an order this was fust time here. And all you heard in the was the yard door open and close and the staff must have been smoking. So then another worker came into the restaurant she started talking to her she put her stuff down and made her fresh cup of coffee but she wanted tea but put creamer in her cup. So she had to drink the coffee and it was smelling good. Oh, I forgot they been cooking the ribs outside because of the door. But my food wasn't that hot. The coffee had a smell but you couldn't smell the food. Then three people came in to eat, and the lady asked, "Do you have reservation. and the lady behind the bar said you can seat yourself. I'm still drinking my drink and looking around and waiting on our food. Then, a couple came in and sat at the bar. What really to the cake was when the lady behind told them it was Happy Hour and told them a list of items that what was for happy hour. Know that was something and rude. So our food finally came and she gave me the bill and it was $40.00 or more so I opened the food to check it my rib platter looked ok and my husband sandwich had a tomato on it I told her I said no tomatoes and told no I didn't . So guesset what I won't be going back to the Boom Boom Restaurant. Believe this was the spot, and I was tried and hungry. When you come into the restaurant, everyone should be treated the same. I didn't have a happy hour drink. I pay eight dollars. So let me finish telling you all my long story finally got ed my hands. Putting up my item that was purchased from the reading terminal. Proceeded to open the food, and it was cold, so I had to warm it up. First, for my husband, then mine. So the ribs were not good at all. I was so made that if you look at the Yelp page, the ribs look good. But taste was not their for me. You know whe you what so bad and then it doesn't turn out right well that was these ribs and the coleslaw tasted like it had a lot of vinegar in it no thank you and fries was ok. We ordered bruschetta as an appetizer and it was very tasty. Loved it. My friend ordered the spaghetti and crabcake. It's not a usual combination but she said it was very good. I ordered the BBQ chicken and rib special. I was expecting chicken breast and ribs... It was dark meat. I was disappointed but when I read the menu it never said breast so my fault. I passed on the jug wine but gave an enthusiastic hell yes to a lot of the food menu during my visit with friends a few months back. I had prize-winning ribs, which were indeed very tasty, falling-off-the-bone tender, and very nicely flavored - neither too spicy nor too bland, neither too sweet nor too acid. The crowd was very compatible with us - we did not feel like the oldest people in the room (nor the youngest), the waitress was homey and cute in her own way, and even the specially brewed beer was quite to our taste. The Eggplant Bruschetta starter was toasted crisply and flavored fully, Linda enjoyed her somewhat spicy crab cakes, and we saved enough for lunch (or possibly dinner) today, leaving room for dessert, which turned out to be a blueberry cobbler that tasted a little like bread pudding. Came here for dinner with my best friend before heading out for a comedy show. Original plan was for a place we usually go to, but he said he had heard some great things about Bomb Bomb and when I called from the road, staff said come on in! I wasn't feeling for BBQ, but they also have some bangin' seafood and Italian dishes. We started off with some roasted red peppers, sharp provolone and prosciutto. This was gone very quickly because it was so good. For entrees, my friend had the crab gravy with spaghetti, and I went with the Chioppino - Scallops, shrimp, mussels, and clams. I made a switch on the gravy asking for the Fra Diavolo sauce. WOW! I think for the first time ever a Fra Diavolo gravy was actually spicy to bring some real sweat down my forehead and clear out my sinuses. This, my Yelp friends, is actually a good thing. Lots of seafood, and super tasty. My only small complaint would be how the gravy was not thick at all. My friend's meal was also gone quickly as it tasted so good. We had a couple of beers and wine, and an awesome time. I also have to give props to whomever the hostess was. She was just like everyone's mom in the place and you could tell that she really enjoyed her job interacting with the customers. After watching me try to eat the pasta, she ended up bring me a seafood plastic bib and insisting I put it on. Actually, she put it on for me and sweet talked her way through it.
