Made an appointment yesterday for 2 pm, and we got started at around 2:10 - my advice would be to show up just on time and not early. For the price, Friendly Cuts is 5 stars, no doubt. On the way back to my car, I stumbled upon Shirley's Friendly Cuts Salon. I was needing a haircut that day, so I thought I'd try her services out. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Friendly and very personable. I was the only one there at the time so I didn't have to wait and got my haircut. PRICE: The price for a haircut is competitive and is within +/- $2 of other places around the area. PARKING: The facility is near Clement and Judah so needless to say parking would be a little challenging but it is just outside of the busy area so YMMV depending on the time you come around. QUALITY OF SERVICE: My haircut was just as I asked albeit my hairstyle is straight forward. I had little to no hair scraps on me when I left and felt that I got my money's worth. CONCLUSION: I would recommend Shirley's Friendly Cuts to anyone who lives in the area and those who are all ready nearby since parking might be a challenge. Good, friendly and low cost. My son and I have been going to Shirley for about three years, referred by a friend in the neighborhood. Shirley always does a nice job (I know when someone doesn't do a good job, because my wife tells me) and it's $17. It was the worst haircut ever! I have curly hair and I have never had a such bad haircut! It was not symmetric at all. Longer on one side...It was not supposed to be like that. i've never once had a PERFECT haircut until today. i called in and made a "semi" appointment..which really was me calling in, telling shirley i wanted haircut, and when the best time to come in was. she said 2 pm and didn't take down a name or number. i showed up at 2 on the dot and asked if i was the person who called in. lol. i said yeah and even though there was a customer in the waiting area, she honored the "appointment time" so i told her i wanted a trim with some layers and cut off the damaged areas. she worked into the cutting, while making conversation with me. it was kind of hard to understand her at first with the accent, but i got use to it and we had a good time talking about where i was from and family and stuff. after about 15 minutes, she asked if i wanted it more layered, and i said yes and she did just that. minutes later she asked if i wanted layered bangs and i said yes. she did just that. all the while she was explaining that with my facial structure and type of hair, that she was going to cut off more from the bangs to flatter my face. and i first i was anxious cause whenever hairdressers say "just a little" it really means a lot. so i said, "okay, do what you think is right" and in turned out to be the best! she was informative and kept explaining why she was cutting off the amount she was and what she was doing next. she also blow dried my hair. a customer came and waited in the area for his turn..and i usually get the sense when there are people waiting, the hairdresser usually quickens the haircut and rushes it. shirley, however, took her time and kept going over areas of my head to make sure the cut was the way i liked it. she finished in about 35 minutes, with 5 minutes of her taking a phone call but was polite and apologized for it. $16 for haircut, $3 tip, best haircut and experience= priceless. read more

My experience here was okay. I called for an appointment and Shirley was able to fit me in on the same day. I came in for my appointment, and she kindly told me to wait while she finishes up with another client. She's very acknowledge about what looks good for my face (in terms of length and layers). I like the cut. However, I find that her execution was slightly lacking. I felt she was rushing my appointment a bit because there was already another person waiting because after I came home, the length on the left side of my head was longer than the right. So I don't think she was able to thoroughly examine my hair to ensure my hair length was even on all sides. I came back the next day and she trimmed the left a little more to even the length on the right. She also thinned out my hair so it looks more stylish (because I have thick hair). No extra charge. Now I really like the cut. And for $16? (plus $4 for tip) Better than some of the other salons in SF. Overall, she's really nice and I'm sure she can cut very well. I think I just caught her on an off day or something. I would go back to her, but make an appointment a few days or a week in advance. Also, if you wear glasses, try to wear contacts if you can. It'll be easier to examine the length yourself before leaving the salon. P.S. I read a review that someone else had the same problem about the length not being the same. I wonder if that reviewer came in the next day and asked her to fix it. She surely was very accommodating to me. read more

From reading the reviews, I felt that it was safe to try this place if I knew exactly what kind of haircut I wanted. My hair is short and wavy, so it's a little difficult to predict how my hair will turn out with each cut. Nevertheless, I told Shirley more or less what I wanted, showed her a picture, and my hair turned out great. She really does take her time, even with the shampoo. My cut was $21 for a cut and shampoo. I think it's $18 for cut only. She was very knowledgeable of her techniques and products. I'll be back. read more

What a misnomer! The lady who cut my hair was so grumpy and clearly didn't care about my satisfaction--she just wanted to get home. I think it's bizarre that a hairdresser would audibly sigh in annoyance when asked to dry my hair because I wanted to check that it looked good dry... To cut it, she had spritzed with water to dampen it and then cut it when it was only midway wet, so there's no way she could have done a precise job. With short hair, it's imperative that after the initial cut, it be dried and straightened and then perfected but she huffed and puffed when I suggested that. Indeed, when I rushed home to dry and straighten my hair myself, I found there was a chunk that hadn't been cut in-line with the rest of the bob--so I trimmed it *myself* with paper scissors, and it actually looked *better*. The layering is all frumpy and not at all smooth, and the A-line is nowhere near precise. Totally unacceptable. read more

I moved here from the East Coast, and was in need of a new salon for haircuts. Got on yelp and see which salon place was closer to me and more convenient. Friendly Cuts was on top of the list and I read the reviews and they seem pretty good and it looked inexpensive. Called Shirley and got an an appointment on the same day, looks like you should call for an appointment because she does tend to be very busy, and walk-ins have to wait until she has time. I've been here numerous times already, and by far Shirley has done a great job with my hair. Now everytime I go in, she knows who I am, and tells me to have a seat and she'll be right with me. Shirley is very gentle and very nice, she likes to talk. There are times where her daughter would help her with the phone, and it seems like the daughter would mostly double book everyone, causing confusion to everyone. One time me and a kid was appointed at the sametime. I got there first and as Shirley was cleaning up getting ready for me, the kid and the mother came in and said they have an appointment. Shirley told her to have a seat and she'll see her son after she is done with me, and the mother was like how long because she called and scheduled at 11am for this time, etc.. etc.. and the mother was getting mad, well lady I called to set up an appointment right when Shirley opened, but of course I didn't say anything, just kept my mouth shut.... So Shirley asked me if its ok I wait until she's done with a kid, and in my mind and said to myself "I have other errands to run too after this" but ok since its a kid, it should be fast, so I let the kid go first.... The mother didn't even say "Thank you" or anything... which got me pissed... As the kid and his mom left, Shirley thanked me and apologize for the long wait and said she knew I always call early in the morning to book an appointment with her.....But anyways, overall Shirley is great and she she does a good job... It's probably best if they can organize their schedule a little bit, for say, by asking for a name and write down the time the person called? read more

I don't think I have ever been quite so happy with a haircut before, or at least not for a long time. First, let me start by saying I had long hair, and had it cut it short. I have very nice, soft, straight hair, and usually when I grow it long, I have to hear from the stylist how much of a shame it is that I am cutting it. Shirley was the first person who did not give me a hard time about cutting my "nice long hair" short, which means we were off to a good start. Now onto the haircut itself. I didn't have a photo of what I wanted, so I was only able to make a pitiful attempt to say what I wanted, and gesture at my hair to show how long I wanted it. Shirley had no problem figuring out what I wanted (which evidently is called an A cut) and she even got that I wanted "messy" layers to give my normally straight hair a little bit of character. The part she had the hardest time figuring out was how I wanted the back, so every time she did something to it, she turned me around to make sure it was what I wanted. I have a low hairline in the back, and typically when I cut my hair short, a big section of it gets shaved out in the back. Not so this time. Shirley made sure that the back was blended so I didn't look like a mushroom without shaving a large chunk out, which is exactly what I wanted. All in all, I think she spent about 45mins cutting off more than a foot of hair and every step of the way kept making sure I was happy with the direction that the haircut was going in (and she still only charged the standard $16 haircut fee). I think I was lucky and caught her during a break in the day, since she said she had a long string of male haircuts before. She also said she was happy to have a woman in that wanted something a little different, which made me like her even more. Overall, this is the only place I've ever been for a haircut that I'd genuinely recommend. I'll be a regular here from now on. read more

I have went to several haircut places in the sunset. It was after my last mess up that I looked around and came across this place on yelp. A few bucks more than some of the "wing it" shops but well worth it! in all seriousness, the best barber I have had in the last 11 years. I have never had a barber spend so much time On my hair to make sure it was even, straight, and well cut. She takes a lot of time to make sure your hair cut turns out how you want it so don't expect to be in and out in 10 min. i came a upon this place with my friend when we were searching the neighborhood for haircut salons. the hairdresser is absolutely great and made the experience painless. she asked how short we wanted our hair and made sure that it's way we wanted it. she wasn't the type that got ur opinion of how u wanted to get it cut and that was it. she actually showed u and ask if that was okay. u don't really find much of those places anymore. the price of our haircut is 16 each, which isn't bad compare to the others that charge more and u don't get what u wanted. the salon is fairly new since she did mention it just open this year and u only see two chairs and one wash. the lady does speak english and chinese so that's definitely a plus. she also takes her time and doesn't rush through. read more

I have short hair. To most people cutting my hair in the past, that meant giving me a half-assed attempt at a haircut, assuming that as long as it looked halfway decent, I'd be happy with it. Not so. Thankfully, that all changed when I stepped into Friendly Cuts and met Shirley. She actually paid attention to giving me a good looking cut, and she's always super nice whenever I visit. AND, it's less expensive ($16) than what I used to pay. Also, if you get 8 haircuts, you get the ninth one free, what a deal! Shirley's usually the only one cutting here, so you might want to call and tell her you're coming before heading down. Shirley did quite a good job but took awhile before she assisted me when I already called in to set an appointment with her. She spent quite some time on my hair and it did turn out pretty nice. I received many compliments on my hair. My hair cut was $17 for long hair to short hair. Unfortunately, my friend wasn't as happy with her hair cut. She clearly said she wanted to keep the length and only wanted a small trim. Shirley cut so many inches off my friend's hair. Before my friend even got her hair cut, she tried to situate another customer who had an appointment after my friend's because she thought it was going to be a 'quick' trim. It turns out her other customer wanted a lot to be done so my friend and I was about to walk out. But we were convinced to stay and her other customer apologized and let my friend go before her since my friend had an appointment before hers. read more

I usually go to high end salons for my haircuts since I expect the hairdresser to be well trained and knowledgeable about up to date styles, products and the right cut for each face shape. My hair was getting very long and I needed a trim so I decided to try friendly cuts because I didn't want to spend $50-$90 just for a trim. She was good with trims but definitely not good with blow drying and styling. Don't expect a head turning cut. Overall, I am happy with my $17 trim. read more
