We stopped by Frigidarium while in Italy, and it was easily one of the best gelato spots we've tried. The texture was perfectly creamy but still light, and the flavors were so fresh and vibrant. I'm usually all about fruit flavors, and the strawberry was a standout--sweet, tangy, and tasted just like biting into the real thing. Unlike some gelato places that just feel like overly sweet ice cream, this actually had that authentic, high-quality taste. You can tell they use real ingredients, not artificial syrups. Didn't try the chocolate dip that everyone talks about, but honestly, the fruit flavors alone were more than enough to make this a new favorite. If you're in Rome and love fresh, real gelato, this spot is a must!
The Frigidarium ice cream is probably one of the most popular gelato stores in the area. The line is usually long although moving fast, and you have to pick up your flavors very fast as every one working here is rushing you, then pick the choice of either chocolate coat or wiped cream as toppings. I've tried their flavors of Frigidarium (very sweet), Stracciatella (creamy), Tiramisu (balanced rum taste), Pistachio Cheesecake (a must try here), and Cioccoarancia (dense texture and orange taste). Overall good quality but not worth the hassle if waiting line is really long.
Good value gelato, but more on the sweet side. I thought it was overhyped. There is always such a long line, we came around 8pm and waited 15 min to get to the front. For 5€ for two gelatos with 2 flavors each, this is good value. Because of the long line, I was hesitant to sample any flavors but they did offer that. We tried the pistachio and hazelnut gelato. The pistachio was good and creamy, the hazelnut was too sweet for my taste. I also got them dipped in chocolate in a waffle cone, which topped the dessert off nicely but made it messy to eat.
Very solid gelato. There was a line at night around 11:30 pm when I went to get some before leaving Rome in the morning. I got 3 types to taste which were mango (good), frigidarium (good), and white chocolate with gianduja (my fav of the three). The guy taking my order was patient and nice even though there was a line which I appreciate. And it's a little shop so the ambiance was, get your gelato, and now leave lol. Would def come back to try their other flavors.
It was our first time in Rome so thanks to Yelp for all the recommendations. Frigidarium was one of the highest ratings for gelato so we made it a point to taste it and it did not disappoint. The coffee had a kick on it and the chocolate flavor was a hit too. There's a long line but the service is fast. The ambiance is casual and it's like a grab and go thing. Everyone was just eating their gelato in front and on the side of the store. No table and chairs for customers but they say that's normal in Rome for gelato stores.
It's a funny old world. There we were newly arrived in Rome from Trieste via 6 other countries, and surrounded by living signs of ancient history that gave us so much today. Even Monty Python posed on what have the Romans ever done for us - all right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us? Brought peace? So luggage deposited our friends got a reply text from their daughter in Scotland essentially ya gotta get to this place as it's the best ice cream ever and they coat the ice cream in choccy. Dutiful doting parents instantly did as instructed. Enter google (I guess) and location found I think he said pinned, so off we went past the tomb of the unknown solider - Tomba del Milite Ignoto - past the statue of the goddess Roma, the Basilica Ulpia, Trajan's Column, Basilica Papale di Santa Marie just to name a few for bloody ice cream. Yeesh. So the ice cream was very good indeed and fairly priced but the servings weren't over generous. There are no seats and you literally stand in a small space for cheerful service. I always have a cone never a tub. I mean a tub? I can't eat a tub. A tub usually brings a plastic spoon and our planet could forgo more plastic. The chocolate ice cream coating was thin. It slowed melting and was tasty. It wasn't the best ice cream ever. But we did each eat our weight in ice cream when we were in Rome and Trieste. Now where did we put those ancient monuments?

I got four scoops: frigidarium (caramel and chocolate--sooo good), bacio (hazelnut and chocolate, also quite good), coconut (perfectly light) and pistachio (more savory but not as flavorful). You get the option of whipped cream or chocolate (white or dark) coating.
FRIGIDARIUM HAS THE BEST GELATO IN ITALY!!! This place is amazing. Their specialty Frigidarium is my favorite flavor. Plus, they give you whipped cream or they dip your ice cream in chocolate for free with your order. I visited this place four times in one day! It's that good! In regards to cost, the gelato is reasonably priced. I think it was around 4 euros for three scoops of gelato. read more
If you're ever in the area to shop or have pizza next door, stop by Frigidarium for some gelato. Frigidarium was my last gelato stop in Rome and I can hands down say it was my favorite! The difference is that Frigidarium is much creamier than say, San Crispino. When I eat gelato or ice cream, I want it to be creamy and fat tasting. It's really satisying, I won't lie. Gelato for me is indulgent and Frigidarium delivers. So many good flavors to choose from. I tried the banana. It was wonderful and fruity. The color was grey which was good because it shows that the gelato at Frigidarium is not laced with dyes. For my own cup, I got pistachio and black cherry. I would have never thought about getting black cherry as a flavor but my aunt who is a local said it was her favorite flavor of gelato, hands down. It is definitely one of my favorite flavors now too. The pistachio was sweet and refreshing. The black cherry had plenty of chunks of cherries in it. Technically it is Spagnola (Amorino Cherry?). I believe the specialty of this place is the variety and selection of gelato they offer. They make these special blended flavors that you cannot get anywhere else. Most other gelato shops only offer one flavor. They also dip your gelato in white or dark chocolate. The Frigidarium is the best. It is a mix of multiple flavors and it comes with a cookie! The price of the gelato is unbeatable. 1 EUR per scoop. The shop is very small with a opening for customers to go in and out. It lies on a normal street where pedestrians and cars go through. The line can get long and wind down the street. Even though there is not much around this place, my friends and I returned to Frigidarium once more before we left Italy. I will definitely return to this place the next time I come. Even talking about the Frigidarium flavor makes me miss it. read more
This was the first gelato I had in Italy. It was so unbelievably good that I had to get it again the next day. We would have gotten it a third time, on our last day in Rome, except that we were strapped for time. So creamy that it tasted like a custard, except thicker. I have more experience in the ice cream department than gelato, but I've been building up on my gelato resume while here in Italy haha. So far I've had gelato 8 times and 13 flavors in a week xD This place is my favorite of the bunch. For 3 euros, you get 3 scoops in a sugar-slash-waffle cone and can mix & match flavors. Then you can get it covered in a hard dark or white chocolate shell. Sometimes, it comes with a chocolate cookie. Delish. I want some now T_T read more
Rating: 97/100 pts Frigidarium came recommended from a true Roman foodie, and it did not disappoint. The red signage out front proudly announces their mottos: traditional, Italian-heritage flavors, high quality ingredients (real fruit, no gluten or hydrogenated fat), freshness (the gelato is made fresh every day), and research (new flavors inspired by customer feedback). And compared to other gelaterias, I certainly noticed a difference in consistency and ingredients: this was undoubtedly among the top gelato I had in Italy. Another feature is the option to throw on some hot chocolate to the top of your order. (They'll ask if you want chocolate "levante"--or something like that, my Italian is too poor to catch what they actually said.) I decided against it, since I had chosen a chocolate flavor (Cioccoarancia--with dried orange) and the classic Pistachio. Not getting the chocolate on top turned out to be the right move, as this chocolate tasted DEEP. It had a naturally rich cocoa taste to it, instead of a sugary sweetness. Dried orange chunks were a-plenty. Pistachio is one of my favorite gelato flavors, and theirs had visible nibs of ground pistachio all throughout. I believe this was the best pistachio I had out of all the times I had it. Although I consider them AMONG the best gelaterias in Rome, I do give them the award for having THE best name for a gelateria: a "frigidarium" is a cold bath that the ancient Romans bathed in to close their pores. When in Rome, this spot is a must! Located on a tiny street off Piazza Navona, this little hole in the wall is full of big flavor. Their awesome flavors (Bacio is a must) are destined to surprise you, and the best part is that they dip it in while or dark chocolate, totally delicious! We came here expecting a huge line, but I was the second person in line. The service is a bit too efficient to be 'nice', which can be considered rude by some. However, I didn't mind... They are just tying to keep the line moving, and with 1€ per scoop price point and the awesome taste, they have to... There is a steady flow of people and line keeps building up. read more

The best gelato I have ever tasted!!! Get the house special gelato which is blend of 3 different gelatos, try the pistachio, the black cherry( amazing) and the lemon amaretti gelato. We had no idea where we were going, no GPS signal to guide us but we knew we were in the right vicinity. So over the hills and through the woods in search of gelato we ho. We couldn't find it for anything!!! We adjusted our strategy and decided to interrogate any one scooping gelato into their mouths. We scoped out every one who had gelato in the hands until we spotted the Refridarium's napkin wrapped around this guys cup. He happily pointed us in the right direction. Eutopia!!!! Feet hurting, calves cramping with a million steps under our belt but it was worth it!!! read more
Hands down the best gelato I've had in Italy & anywhere else in the world! Located near Piazza Navona & the Trevi Fountain. We went on a cool rainy day, but that didn't mean it was line free. Luckily, our wait was probably 10 minutes max. The line did pile on once we got in line though. The ladies working were quick & ever so efficient. I got a small cone with strawberry, lemon with the whipped cream. I have never had strawberry gelato like theirs, it was amazing! Hubs got the frigidarium, chocolate & had his dipped in dark chocolate. The frigidarium flavor was bomb, but couple that with the dark chocolate dip...bombtastic! Y'all won't find another gelato place quite like this one. Save yourself the trouble & grab yourself one (or plenty more) gelato cone stat! If I was allowed to take anything back from Italy to California, this little gelato shop would be my choice. It's a 15 minute walk from St. Peter's Basilica, located in a very small alleyway. The line wasn't too bad when we arrived in the mid-afternoon, but it quickly queued up. Service is quick and the gelato is creamy and very delicious, practically indescribable (literally, cause I can't remember my flavors, just that it was very good)! This shop 1-ups the other gelato shops in the area by adding some flair on top of their scoops. They give you the option of adding melted chocolate (dark or white) onto your gelato, which hardens into a crunchy shell. Get that liquid gold onto your gelato, pronto! Lastly, because our currency exchange rate for the $ was fairly good, it was cheap! It was only 2 euros, which was at the time equivalent to $2.24 in the US. Good & cheap! The best gelato I've ever had! It's dirt cheap too, 3€ for massive amounts of gelato. I chose to get three different flavors: their version of mint chocolate chip, tiramisu, and coffee. Each one was absolutely amazing, and the waffle come it came in was just as delicious! After choosing your flavors, you get to choose if you want it dipped in chocolate: dark, or white. I chose to dip it in dark and it tasted amazing. However, dipping definitely makes it harder to eat so be careful and grab lots of napkins!! Already craving this gelato and I only just had it last night. Can't wait to go back before we leave the city! read more
My personal #1 favorite place for gelato. Their flavors are incredible, their prices are quite cheap (2 Euro for the smallest), portion sizes are big, and the BEST PART they will dip your gelato upside down in white or dark chocolate to form a hardshell coating on top!! (for free) My favorite flavor is frigidarium, named after the place itself, it's a hard one to explain so ask for a sample first, but they even give you a cookie with your gelato if you order this one (which then also gets chocolate coated if you'd like). Their strawberry and raspberry flavors are so delicious, much better than a usual fruit gelato. I also loved bacio and coconut, although I've found these flavors to be better at other gelato places in Italy. I went back for seconds nearly every time I went...it's that good, and cheap enough to be an option. This is definitely a must-visit when you're in Rome!! read more

Great flavors to choose from, and the hard shell dip made it my favorite gelato throughout our entire trip in Italy!! Wish I had gotten back to try the shire chocolate dip. Will be my most memorable gelato, and believe me, we became quite the gelato connoisseurs! read more

As a huge Yelper, I usually make a list of all the places I want to eat at in a city before my visit. Of course, I find these places via Yelp. For Frigidarium, I actually had this place bookmarked, but since I was traveling in so many different cities, I forgot all about it until I stumbled upon it one night. Once I saw the line outside the door, I knew I had to jump in line. I literally have ZERO resistance to gelato. I tried the strawberry and mango sorbet and both of the flavors were amazing! The awesome thing about this place is that you can either add whipped cream to your gelato or you can get it chocolate dipped. I didn't think chocolate-dipping my fruit flavored sorbet would be a good idea so I got the whipped cream. I think the cream was FRESH and overall went really well with the fruity flavors. Definitely one of the best gelato places in Rome! read more

Definitely would not recommend coming here for four reasons: * flavors aren't that good or amazing * Rude and unfriendly staff * Staff jokes that THEY are the English menu and then get annoyed when you ask what a certain Italian flavor is * they have a 2 sample limit and they don't tell you this before scolding you when you ask for another EXPERIENCE Poor and unfriendly service! I thought I was here to get good Gelato, after tasting a few, I was surprised to find that the flavors were not that tasty and asked to sample some other flavors. The lady helping us started sighing and rolling her eyes and rudely told us that it was two per person when her colleague let us try one more. We felt insulted by her rude tone so much that we decided to not give them business. Normally we ALWAYS buy ice cream after sampling, even when it's not good, but she made me feel so terrible that we decided not to buy from them. We really wanted to love the Gelato because of the reviews but didn't find a flavor that we liked and the service didn't help. Surprised she was so mean, considering that the two of us shared both tiny samples instead of asking for 2 each AND brought 3 other people with us. If you're an ice cream shop and you want to enforce some kind of sample limit, you should explicitly say that before someone samples, not reprimand them afterwards. read more

Best gelato in Roma!!! My favorite flavor is the baccio!! They also have an option to have your gelato covered in dark or white chocolate and it is included in the price!! The prices are good and cheap. I adore this little shop. Friends also enjoyed the waffles with Nutella. Came here several times over my trip!! read more

We got the strawberry and mango sorbet in the biggest size they had and it was really good. Although we were supposed to eat the crepes there, we got carried away from the idea because of the warm weather. A big cup of gelato/sorbet cost 4 Euros, which I think is a good price. I would go back for the crepes because I love crepes and Nutella. read more

It feels like a steal! No wonder line was out the door and into the street on a Saturday night. (10-15 min wait) Coming from California, I feel like I would have been charged over $14 for 4 scoops. We got 2 scoops in a cone, and 2 in a cup for a total of €4 (currently about $3.64). Quality is on point, each of our flavors tasted fresh and smooth. read more

This place is as good as it gets. The lines can be super long but we lucked out coming here on a Thursday night. You have the option of cones or cups, both in 3 sizes. The chocolate coating, whether white or dark, is included. We tried four flavors: Frigidarium Pistachio Crema Florentina Coffee All four was very tasty. I must also add that this doesn't have the weird aftertaste that is common in some other gelato places. read more

Best gelato in Rome hands down!! We sought this spot out after finding it on trip advisor, after a decent walk to get there we were not disappointed. I had the Spagnola (amarena cherries) which was outstanding, my wife had a chocolate chunk flavor which she loved. DEFINITELY WORTH THE TRIP read more

Gelato so amazing, I had to get it twice during my 4-day visit in Rome. It's a favorite of locals, tourists, and study abroad students alike. Two generous scoops for €2 is a steal for the rich flavor/high quality here. Try their namesake gelato (the yellow one with star cookie decorations) and add chocolate on top. You won't regret it! read more

We have been in Rome for 3 days and we have gotten gelato from this place at least 4 times now. Hands down delicious! Our favorite flavors are the stracciatella, crema florentina, dark chocolate and raspberry sorbet! You are also given the option of having your gelato dipped in chocolate or white chocolate. Make sure you come ready to get messy and covered with deliciousness! read more
What a great way to begin our gelato adventure. After a delicious dinner, we stopped by for a quick treat. Couldn't have been a better decision. Creamy, flavorful and delicious. Definitely worth the line we waited in. Don't remember the flavors we got, so I'm not going to be any help there. I do remember that it was almost impossible to make the choice. best gelato ever! I got the pistachio and creama dipped in chocolate with a waffle cone. It was heavenly! The flavors rates fresh. Nothing artificial m. I'm lactose intolerant and this did not bother my stomach at all. I have better much with dairy outside of the US I will definitely return on my next trip next year. read more
