I have a solid stylist I have been frequenting for almost 5 years but lately, I haven't been 100% satisfied. She is a great, sweet, and talented gal but I don't think she is necessarily the one to go to for the style I seek. Therefore, I have been marinating on looking for a new stylist which includes research, phone calls, and consultations. Basically, I'm interviewing stylists! That is where Fringe came into the picture... Fringe, based on first appearances, may cause some trepidation. It is located in a strip plaza next to a shady video store, a halal deli (which I actually love) and a LA historic restaurant/landmark which was inhabited by an old lady (rumored to be a "witch" by neighborhood children) who just passed away leaving a local construction crew to refurbish the restaurant in order to reopen it. The salon's doors are locked leaving clients to ring a bell which, in my opinion, isn't welcoming (although great for safety). I first called Fringe to explain what I am seeking and spoke to co-owner Robert who was extraordinary friendly, knowledgeable, and professional, leaving me much impressed. He suggested that I speak with his partner, Kristina, because she is more experienced in the choppy, pixie haircuts I always have. Kristina wasn't in at the moment but he took my info and said she would call. Indeed Kristina called back about an hour later and even left me her cell phone (personal) number. I called Kristina back and she was also very kind and set up a time to meet for a consultation. She agreed that she would rather have us discuss what I am seeking versus having me be unhappy with the final cut. I was rather impressed with this service instead of her simply trying to make a sale. After ringing the doorbell and being let into the salon, Kristina was very friendly and all smiles. Fringe is small with only about 2-3 chairs (very intimate) but with spunky, modern touches like cat-print chairs, bold colors, and cheeky furniture. Plus, there were some items on sale such as shoes and jewelery making the vibe that of a local boutique. The salon is clean, airy, and bright despite its outward appearance due to location. I explained to Kristina what I was looking for, showed her pictures, etc. She was very considerate and listened to everything I had to say plus "played" with my hair explaining how she would produce the look and what I could expect. My only annoyances were that she kept having to interrupt the consultation with answering phone calls (there was no receptionist). Another annoyance? Robert quoted me $40 on the phone but Kristina said it would be $50. It may only be $10 but a $10 misquote to me is a big deal and CAN make or break a deal. Kristina was ready to book an appointment on the spot but I mentioned having to think about it. She was fine with that and mentioned that I can call her cell phone to book any time (she is VERY accessible, to say the least). I decided to not book with Kristina or Fringe so I can't vouch for the actual cut but if customer service, accessibility, and the consultation are indicators; then Fringe is certain to deliver great service. I may find my new stylist elsewhere but Fringe is worth checking out if looking for a hip salon that is reasonably priced (surrounding salons charge about $70-80 for women's cuts). Just be careful with the ghost of the "witch" next door! read more

I love the atmosphere, the girls are wonderful. I love Rosie she is the best at hair extension application , I've been following her for years at different locations . I definitely recommend her .The only unfortunate thing is that hair extension application takes anywhere between 4 to 5 hours and I can't work remotely due to no wifi . It's very unfortunate because now in days all business have wifi :( Also unfortunately there's no seat covers in the restroom and it's not well maintained (a little dirty) so for that I will have to give it a 3 star . read more

Best colorist ever I have been going to Kristina for years but decided to try something special for New Years Eve. This little salon is an absolute gem. Environment is peaceful, calming, serene, and the owner is a doll. I feel like it's more of a home rather than a business and Christina really makes me feel warm and fuzzy in a great way. She makes her own jewelry and is damn good at it. Very detail oriented beautiful hand crafted aesthetically pleasing pieces. And the best part are the prices. It literally costs her - for example 30 dollars to create a necklace that she will sell for 32 dollars. I mean...basically that's a steal for the customer purchasing the product because she only profits 2 dollars and any other person would jack the price of their products way up to make more profit and she is just super down to earth and humble. A beautiful and authentic person. Very easy to talk to and is genuinely interested in her customers lives and getting to know them. Very unprofessional hairstylist here, I guess when you go in and ask for a root touch up and some more highlights when your hair is already light i guess that would translate to darker hair??? Well that's what I got trying to keep my hair light and I walk out with darker hair and she said it looks darker because it's wet just wait till you dry it and when I did it was still dark. when I contacted the hair dresser all she did was argue with me and give me every excuse why my hair is Now darker which is what I didn't ask for and then she rudely says to go elsewhere and doesn't offer to kindly fix it knowing that I was really upset. This was the worst hair salon I have ever been to! Do not trust the other 4-5 star ratings. These are the reasons why: 1. My hair was ombré when I went in to get it undone. I have very long hair that ends at my lower back. The top of my hair was a dark brown and the bottom half was a lighter brown closer to a tan color. I brought in a photo of the hair color that I wanted which was a maroon color with slight blonde undertones. She (Kristina) confidently said she can do it exactly because she herself had red hair. After the first dye session, my hair came out EXACTLY the same as it was when I walked in. My hair was just slightly more damaged from the chemicals she put into my hair. 2. Then she tells me that it's too hard to do the color as shown in the picture because she is not comfortable with ombré for it is too complicated and difficult for her. I thought it was weird that she would say that NOW after she confidently told me she could do it and failed her attempt. 3. I decided to give her another chance. I brought in a second picture (as a plan B) which is one solid light brown color. I told her that if the other one is too difficult then all I ask is to make my hair just one color again to light brown. While she was putting chemicals into my hair, it's seemed like she was rushing and it didn't seem like she was evenly putting the dye throughout my hair. I told her to put some on the bottom part of my hair as well and she said she will later. 4. While I am waiting for the dye to soak through my hair, she says "This is hard. Maybe I am not the right hair stylist for you" NOT WHAT I WANT TO HEAR WHILE MY HAIR IS UNDER YOUR CARE. I told her to relax and as a stylist she is supposed to make me feel comfortable and her doubts are scaring me. She laughed it off nervously. 5. The chemicals started burning my head but I figured that it's because of the different type of dye she was using. When it was time for my hair wash, she put scorching hot water on my sensitive scalp. I screamed and she told me that it's not that hot on her hands. Obviously because her hands were not soaking in chemical for the past 70 minutes! Then she attempted to "wash" my hair which was a few strokes. My previous hairstylists always massaged my head and washed my hair thoroughly which she did not. 6. While she was blowdrying my hair to see the color, she burned my neck because she put it too close to me. She blamed it on my necklace that I'm wearing when it was nowhere near where she burned me. She did not apologize 7. The color was horrifying. It was not one solid color but THREE COLORS. The top of my head of maroon, then there was a stripe of blonde across, then it was Dark brown at the bottom. I was horrified. 8. I told her that it's now three colors and she said "that's what u wanted!" That was not what I wanted I even had photos to prove it. She began raising her voice telling me that she spent 4 hours on my hair and she doesn't like my attitude. 9. She threw down the brush and started yelling at me saying that I was a liar. 10. I told her to stop yelling at me because I am a customer and she did not correctly do her job. 11. I told her that I would be giving her a review on Yelp and she blocked the door from me leaving, holding up a mirror and telling me to look at my hair in a different light and it won't be so bad. I looked like a clown. I was very excited to get my hair done here because of the great reviews and I lived 2 blocks away. This lady does not know what she's doing and all she kept talking about was wanting to put blonde highlights in my hair. I am an Asian 30 year old woman. I do not want blonde streaks in my hair nor was it even close to what I asked for. She was rude, yelled at me, and did not own up to any of her mistakes. I was nice enough and stupid enough to give her another chance I went in there with two color tones, wanting one color tone, and came out with three. Not to mention now my hair is so damaged that professional salons says I have to chop all my hair off and start over. If there was an option for no stars, she would receive a negative Don't waste your time or money and go to a professional. read more

I was a walk-in when we first met at another shop and, with the exception of two times, I have not gone to anyone else since. This is a LA gem!!! It is hard to find a salon that does an amazing job, charges a very reasonable rate and yet manages to give you amazing one on one attention and of course a flawless cut and color. I recently went to the salon and changed from a dark brunette to a complete ginger and a cut for $165. Which I think is an amazing deal. They spent over 3hrs with me and to this day people honestly think I am a natural ginger. The color weaved nicely with my complexion (very pale). Robert was able to create the illusion of highlights in my hair. Since the color was a big change Robert made me feel very comfortable if I needed to come back for touch ups (which i did not need). Many people have commented how truly natural it looks. Trust me, I work in retail so I see people all day every day. As for my cut Robert is a master. I have very fine wavy hair with a ton of cowlicks and he took me from shoulder length to a pixie, like Carrie Mulligan, flawlessly without making me look like a boy. In fact, I have maintained this cut for the past 2 years and he is able to consistently trim it and work with my cowlicks instead of against them. In fact, as the cut grows out people consistently think I have had my hair trimmed and yet I only go every 6 weeks. I simply cannot say enough good things about this salon. Kristina is amazing! I moved here in the summer of 2012 and found this salon on RedKen's website. I am very picky with my hair and fiercely loyal to an amazing stylist. Kristina is from Germany where you need a degree to be a hair stylist. Additionally she's also gone to school here and takes continuing education classes. I always love my hair - both color and cut. She can make suggestions or work off a picture. I call or txt her a week ahead and she's always able to fit me in. She can also do Brazilian blowouts but I've never gotten one.
