They were patient when walking me through a few things they had, but nothing has prices and when I asked all I got was "it depends." ZERO stars, will never shop here again, terrible customer service. Went to buy some treated lumbar and requested to look for some lumbar that is as straight as possible since it was being used for a hand railing. Employee took down stack of lumbar and only uncovered one corner so it made it almost impossible to find a good board without having to pull them completely out. Then we asked if we could uncover it and he gave us attitude. We couldn't find anything remotely close to a straight board out of the 15 that were there and the employee was not willing to open a new bundle and walked away. It was also asked of him If he had a stapler to put up a flag for the drive and he said no. Then another employee came outside so we asked if we could just get different lengths and he said he will just refund us instead of helping us find other sizes. read more

I wish I didn't have to shop here but it's convenient to my home and stocks Baltic birch, which I use frequently and is the only reason I shop here. I've shopped here 10+ times and every single experience has been poor customer service. Most employees act like you're a burden to make a purchase, even when charging labor to cut plywood sheets in half. Labor is understandable, griping that you have to make a few simple cuts isn't. When asking to have two plywood sheets cut in half and charged for labor, I was told I should get a bigger truck so they don't have to cut the plywood. I really don't like this shop. Honestly, this is a neat little place. Great selection of hardwoods. I had never been to a lumberyard before, and have been increasingly getting more involved with woodworking projects, so I wanted to see what it was all about. I showed up with inquiries about pricing and the intent to just walk around and check out the selection. The reason I can't possibly give a good rating, is because the salesperson who was assisting me was not only ultra condescending, he also shouts as his normal speaking voice. I found it a bit humiliating. He ridiculed me for asking about pricing, because I guess his target market is people who either have an unlimited supply of money or are horrible at managing it. Maybe he is that way with everyone, but I couldn't help but notice that an older woman and man were treated much more respectfully. If I ever bring myself to come back to this place, I will make an effort to make myself look older and more masculine to ensure that I get treated decently. read more

Unreal. We just found out that the wood we bought here several years ago to build our deck was not the cedar we selected and PAID for but actually some kind of pine. The incredible guy that restained it for us just clued us in. The signs are obvious to an informed person but, alas, lumber isn't an area of expertise for me or my husband. Besides feeling like we were swindled, I'm not excited about the prospect of having to replace the whole deck much, much sooner than anticipated. We chose to invest in cedar for a reason. Though this lumber company carries a wide variety of Woods don't expect good customer service. I called to get a particular kind of hard wood in a specific length and was told they had it. Upon arrival (120 mile drive) I was told that the wood I specifically needed was on the bottom of the stack of 10 or 15 boards and would not be available. After telling them that I needed that specific length they begrudgingly complied with my request. My entire experience with this company was me being talked down to by a jerk of an employee. That being said if you can go somewhere else please do so... I was not able to because they were the only place I could get what I needed within a 250mile drive one way. read more

Bottom line: the lumber I purchased at Front Range Lumber was both cheaper and of better quality than that of the local big box stores. ........... I purchased some materials from Front Range Lumber to build a farm house table. I ordered my stuff, loaded it up and was on my way. My only gripe was that their website said free delivery but it wasn't actually free. There was a $20 fuel charge and a minimum order that I did not meet. Well as Murphy would have it I goofed up the table top and since it was Sunday (Front Range was closed) I bought replacement lumber from a big chain home improvement store. I found the prices were about 5% higher at the chain (no matter because they price matched, but still the big chain's prices were higher) and the quality of the lumber, though the same type, was just well below that which I received at Front Range. I completely recommend this place and will not shop anywhere else. read more

Then, my new contractor told me to inquire with Front Range about a bid for windows. {Enter sound of angels singing & harps playing} - wow, what a breath of fresh air to speak witih professionals who take their jobs and their company seriously. They have been professional, courteous, timely and have gone out of their way to call my contractor, fax information, answer my endless questions and double-check measurements for me. DON'T SHOP HERE! They basically stole $58 dollars from us. We chose 18 cedar 2x4's, loaded them in the car ourselves while their employee just watched us. Then we reviewed a video of the raised beds we are building and realized the guy just used Douglas fir 2x4's. So we went back inside (having had the wood for maybe 5-10 mins just sitting in our car) and asked to exchange the wood. Same guy brought us to the back, we unloaded the 18 cedar boards, then loaded up the 18 Douglas fir boards. Went inside for the price change and they charged us a 30% restocking fee. WE DID ALL THE STOCKING AND RESTOCKING. I argued with the owner about this and he argued back saying itstheir return policy. It's absurd to charge 30% when they zero manual labor and it was within 10 mins of the original purchase. We decided not to get the Douglas fir and had them restock those. They had to earn the $58 dollars they stole from us somehow. I will NEVER shop here again. I honestly don't know how they are still in business with these kinds of practices and customer service. And it's also worthy to note that I stood there for a few good minutes waiting for one of the 4 employees at the counter to look at me and help. I like these guys generally speaking. They have decent wood. Often quality not available in HD or L's. I like it that they are not one of those places too. They do charge full price for their product and do not like returns. The British guy is gruff and tries to get you to take the reject lumber when you are paying full price so be careful. I have used Front Range Lumber in the past and have had mixed results. I recently called for pricing on James Hardi siding and was told they would check prices and call me back. I called again several working days later and spoke to another rep. and explained that I was waiting for a response from inquiry last week. He said he would check pricing and get back to me. As I did not get a call back, I called 3 days later and spoke to Michael, "OH I DIDN'T CALL YOU BACK" duh, no or I wouldn't be calling again. I waited several minutes on hold and he informs me that the siding is just shy of $20 per piece. Pricing at Lowes and Home Depot is 9.98 per piece. Let's do the math, we know that Depot and Lowes is not selling at cost so Front Range is gouging at a 100% over the big box stores plus the markup. In closing, either the staff at Front Range is inept or they are raking people over the coals on materials, either way, NO THANK YOU, FRONT RANGE LUMBER, you have lost a customer for life. read more

Er. I think my post will be +1 on the customer service aspect of FRL. I've spent several thousand $$'s over the past few years on projects, mainly cedar fencing, pergola, etc. and seem to leave every time having a bad or at least less-than customer service experience. I don't expect much - it's a simple lumber yard and I'm not going to socialize, but today was my last trip. I try and support local small family owned businesses but can't go back to this business. Today - a simple purchase of 8 cedar boards to finish up a pergola project from last season. Counter sale was easy enough, but the yard experience was odd. They sell product often still bundled in small batches (6 in this instance and I needed 8 pieces). The 3 or 4 they had unbundled were C Grade, bent, warped cracked or had bad cuts (unusable). I tried to explain to the Salesperson (says MD on the ticket) that I've had bad experiences buying bundles in the past as about 1 out of the pack of 6 is bad and unusable (see pic of purchase from last season). He quickly barked out that he would not be opening any bundles and that he'd process a refund instead. I again tried to explain my past experience but he was not interested. Ultimately after some tense back-and-forth, I was able to pull the 8 boards I needed but the hassle was so not worth the trip and effort. I anticipate that they have a lot of problems with the quality of their material, which is why they push bundles (no refunds by the way), but they should find a new supplier with more reliable product vs. trying to schelp off bad product to their customers. 1 out of 6 unusable results in an approx. 17% premium to my cost. Not the end of the world, but it adds up and add that to indifferent at best customer service and you have a very bad business model. Anyway, from one small business owner to another, I wish them the best but I'll be taking my business elsewhere. It really does take quite a bit to get me to this position to complain publicly, but they aren't interested and life is too short. Caveat Emptor. read more
