Lousy store. Selection beer and liquor okay but poor wine selection. Prices are the same as ABC stores and supermarkets. Staff usually rude and act like they are doing you a favor. Not sure why or how they stay in business. After a another poor experience today I walked out and went to Publix and got my beer for less. Will never waste my time there again. read more

Let me start by saying Frugal MacDoogal's used to be my go-to store for beer and liquor. They don't have a lot of hard to find stuff (Total Wine is far better for wine, and other small stores, have far better beer (go to Common Market!) / bourbon / scotch selections). The advantage this place has is that everything is in one spot and they have at least one of most types of beer / liquor. I have spent a lot of money here, but after meeting the owner / manager (I think - his name is Ariel) yesterday, I will not be returning. I was after a fun sour beer, so I asked the staff at the front if someone knew about sour beers. One person got very excited and said "YES!" She took me to a beer I hadn't seen before. The price under the beer said $14.99, but she told me it was in the wrong spot and that all beers from that brewer were $8.49. Sure enough, the prices for all the rest were $8.49, and the price tag that said $14.99 didn't describe the beer I had picked up (it said wood barrel aged, which the bottle did not say). So far so good. I grab a few other fun things and go check out. I didn't even look at the prices while checking out since, well, I trusted the store. That was a mistake. We then went over to the liquor side. While there I glanced at the receipt from the beer and saw I was charged $14.99 for that sour beer. So I went back over with the beer and the receipt. Small business owners out there - the below is a lesson in how not to treat customers. I first pointed out what happened to the folks at the front. They knew the person who had told me about that beer but they would not get her since she was on her break. They then told me that people make mistakes and there are no returns. I asked if the person who put that beer in my hand and said it was $8.99 was available, or if they could go chat with her. I was told to wait for a minute. A minute later Ariel (whom I think is the owner or manager) came out and said "price is $14.99 - no returns." Alright, this is fun. He then walked away, leaving the person at the front to deal with this. She asked what I wanted. I said the same thing I had said before - either a refund or $5.50 in my hand. She said neither of those would happen. Then another manager (rather short, blond woman in white shirt) came out and, while standing 3 feet from me, said to the person I had been talking with "he's still here?" Very nice - good thing she's in a customer service business. She then grabbed the receipt from my hand, looked at it, and said she'd give me a refund. So this place eventually did the right thing, but it wasted 10 minutes. A business that actually cares would have made this very easy. How hard is it to say "Sorry that you were given wrong information. We cannot honor the price you were told and, while we normally do not give refunds, we will do that here if you would like." That would have taken 15 seconds and would have gotten me to return to the store in the future. While the front line staff here is generally good, I have no interest in putting money into the pockets of the owners/managers of this place. There are lots of great stores in the area that have better beer / liquor / wine selections and prices and have great owners who want to earn your repeat business. Stay away. read more

I HATE the ABC STORES IN CHARLOTTE. They're tiny, you have to make 2 stops to get booze and beer/wine somewhere else, and generally, their selection is just crap. I've been looking for liqueurs/cordials, and Charlotte ABC stores have the worst selection in the southeastern US. Enter Frugal MacDoogal. You can't go wrong with this store--it has the beer/wine and booze stores in the same building, and it's literally across the street from Carowinds, just 10 minutes south of Charlotte. They have the largest selection of liqueurs I've seen in any store anywhere, foreign and domestic. You want Chartreuse or Poir Williams? It's there. They have all the big names you'd ever want for standard vodkas and rums--grey goose, stoli, etc, And of course all the permutations of Bacardis are there. Give me some Bacardi Select and I'm a happy man. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the prices seem pretty reasonable. After shopping for your hooch, within ten minutes you're back on Tyvola or South Blvd., eating at your favorite restaurant. Great stuff. read more

So I have always said this place is like an Adult Toys R Us for Alcoholics.....LOL. If your looking for a great deal on Alcohol this is the place to go. Its right over the NC state line in SC, and is HUGE. They have pretty much everything you can imagine. And if you use your Debit Card or pay with Cash you get an even better discount. Just picked up the new Whipped Cream Pinnacle Vodka that everyone has been raving about there. They always have it in stock while its hard to find at other Alcohol retailers. I also recommend the Cruzan Black Cherry Rum... it is awesome. But if you haven't been to Frugals you are missing out. It can be a load of fun. read more

Bought a bottle of rum from the store last week. When I opened it that night I noticed that there was a chip in the mouth of the bottle (on the outside but at the lip). Went into the store the next day to exchange the bottle and was told that they were NOT going to do the exchange. The reason I was given was that the chip was not on the inside of the bottle most likely there wasn't any glass in the bottle. Well, most likely doesn't cut it for me and I just wasted my money. read more

They have a very wide variety of beer/liquor to choose from. Prices are about the same as other places, but my specific issue was a special order. They have a sign in the store that lists the types of kegs that are available to order from their distributers. On the bottom of the list, there is clearly listed "Strongbow 1/6 barrel". Back in July, I called to order this keg, and was told I have to come in to do it. So I came in, and talked to someone who was supposedly in charge of the kegs, and I told him I wanted to order the Strongbow. He said they'd order it and call me when it came in... then he walked away without getting my information. I said "Don't you need my phone number if you're going to call me when it comes in?". Long story short, I never got a phone call. That was July 1st. I tried again on July 15th, July 29th, and called at least twice in August. I still have never received as much as a phone call regarding my order. Very poor customer service, and I have a very empty, very lonely kegerator. read more

Who wouldn't give this place 5 stars you have any alcohol you want under one roof. Plus great staff and Carowinds is across the street.

(I'm writing this review for my dad who went there for the first time and doesn't speak english very well.) The floor employees helped him choose the three different wines he was looking for and were all very helpful and polite. He said he had a great experience until he got to the register. There was an african-american cashier that asked him if he was paying cash or credit. He said he would pay credit but also asked if there was any difference in the price. The lady at the register rudely told him that the price difference was shown in the shelves and she didn't know. When he took out his wallet he realized that he had left his credit card at home and told the lady he would pay with cash. The cashier made a face at him and then called a manager to change the transaction to cash. My dad says that the manager came and very helpfully changed the transaction. He would like to specify that everyone at the store was very helpful EXCEPT for the cashier, and that was the only thing he didn't like about it. He would like to know if that african-american cashier had any reason to dislike hispanic customers. read more

This place has a large and assorted variety of alcohol. The store is divided by a tall plexiglass wall. Beer, wine and coolers are on one side, hard alcohol on the other. The prices are always good and sometimes they have great specials before the holidays. It is definitely worth the drive. I'm from Toronto and the only place that comes close, is the duty free at Fort Erie Ontario. read more

HORRENDOUS SERVICE AND TERRIBLE STRONG ARM TACTICS. Here's the story: Called the Fort Mill SC location two weeks a head of time to reserve special craft kegs of beer for my wedding. Beer manager (Javier?) totally dropped tha ball. Didnt check on the order and didnt call me indicating any problem. I showed up the day before the wedding to pay and he said, "oh well, he couldnt get the beer." He acknowledged that I ordered the beer and was expecting it. He offered a totally different beer for almost twice the price (of course) but nothing else. This beer wasnt even in the same category as the one reserved. He flat out refused to do anything other than charge me full price for a beer that I did not want. So here it was the day before my wedding, and he was trying to strong arm me and overcharge me thinking that I had no choice but to pay. Javier was so bad that at one point, he walked away from me and hid in the back room. When he came out 10 minutes later, I asked him what was happening. He stated, "oh, I thought someone else was helping you." Needless to say, I went somewhere else. There were two other stores within 10 minutes of Frugal's that had the beer I wanted. I strongly recommedn you avoid the beer department - its cheaper elsewhere, even in the grocery store. As a side note, the wine manage (Auriel) was so upset about what was going on, he called me later and offered to do something about the situation, but it was too late, they've lost my business forever. read more
