Val did it again! As if she and her crew didn't pull off the most extraordinary wedding reception…read morefor us last September (that our wedding date had to come together in such short notice didn't faze her one bit ), this time we placed my 60th birthday celebration into her talented hands, and wow, did she deliver! Although I'm not surprised. (-; It is rare to find such a well-oiled machine in a restaurant that operates with such heart -- you can tell how connected the crew is and that they're having a good time too, which extends to a customer's experience -- with food that is made with such skill and craft, such care and thought and pride. It's so clear that this is Val's passion, and we are most grateful to have learned about her and her place. Val and team, thank you for the unforgettable birthday sendoff you created for me last night. My friends are sending texts of gratitude for such a lovely time; all of it was perfect. The pretty room with fairy lights and garden flowers and purple everywhere; the FOOD, all of it so delicious and clearly made with a great deal of love and skill, and how fun to have our own printed selection menu; those mocktails, brava to their creatrix; the cake setup; and because of the attentiveness, energy, fun and expertise of the serving crew, you all created a lovely experience where the 25 of us could be fully present, take our time, and just get to be ourselves together! I will keep sending folks your way, whether it's for a casual meal or a reception, memorial luncheon, etc. Thank you again.

Val's Restaurant: A Holden Legend If you haven't been to…read moreVal's, have you even truly lived in Central Mass? Here is the breakdown: The Vibe: It feels like a giant, cozy hug from a grandmother who really wants to make sure you never see your abs ever again. The Portions: Val's operates on the "more is more" philosophy. I ordered a "side" of pasta and I'm pretty sure they just brought out the entire kitchen's inventory for the week. The Strategy: You don't go to Val's for a "light bite." You go there to commit to a three-day food coma. If you don't leave with at least two heavy paper bags of leftovers that could feed a small village, did you even go? The Verdict: 10/10. My belt is screaming, my heart is full of chicken parm, and I'll probably be back next Tuesday.

Small place, doesn't look like a diner from the outside, but once inside the back room, you can see…read morethe tell-tale diner shape. Interesting hot rod decor to distinguish it from the rest. Busy joint, tight seating, and energetic servers who keep attentive. -- Patty Melt: So much to like about this, from the marble rye (though I think pumpernickel) to the full size patty (better than the double smashed you get elsewhere) to the onions to the gooey melted cheese to the extreme juiciness and pleasing flavor. I didn't detect any Russian dressing, but this sandwich wasn't lacking for moistness or flavor oomph. A near-elite rendition and one of the best I've had in a while. Excellent. -- Fries: Included with the patty melt and a plentiful supply. The bad news: they're the dreaded industrial "coated" kind. The good news: they were piping hot and cooked perfectly, crisp outside, fluffy inside. The great news: you can substitute home fries. My server offered a sample of the home fries. -- Home Fries: I found them to be right in my wheelhouse for doneness, crispness, seasoning, onions, and overall texture and flavor. Superb. Between the good looking plates that passed by and my enjoyment of my own food on my first visit, there's sure to be a second. Looking forward to returning with my wife for breakfast and more of those home fries.

They have an ATM onsite, but was not working (most likely empty) when we were there. But I just drove down the street to a gas station and grabbed some cash. NBD. The food was super incredibly delicious. My wife had the chicken and waffles and I had corned beef (homemade, not canned) and eggs and toast. All was delicious and huge portions. Definitely returning for our next breakfast meal!
