The smells of spices when you first walk in is a welcomed treat and lets you know what you have in store. I had the Hawaiian Mix. It was like a party in my mouth! This is always a big detractor and I even typically avoid restaurants near nail salons. In fact, had my timing been different, we might have left. The young lady taking orders was helpful. I had a question about a 2/1 deal on the door. She was friendly. The other gentlemen was not rude but he wasn't helpful either. The food was expensive for the portions. I didn't know what to get so I went for the mixed special plate which has teriyaki marinated grilled chicken, shredded beef, and beef short ribs. The meats came with shredded cabbage, rice, and macaroni salad. The meats were basically grilled but needed the sweet sauce for flavors. Without the sauce, the meats tasted no different than home marinated meats. F's Hawaiian Food is one of those places that I would try to see but not a place I would often come back probably. I have been following the reviews for F'S Hawaiian Food as it operated as a food truck. Rave reviews from Californians, Hawaiians (experts) and all the cool kids. I have stayed away because, 1. I was skeptical about how good the food really was and 2. I don't do food trucks. I'm glad to see that they took the wheels off. Time to try it. But first, disclosure... I don't know "come here from sic them" about Hawaiian food. I have been to the new chain restaurant that recently opened in Owasso. I didn't care for the plain white rice, the tasteless macaroni salad or the sweet sticky chicken. The Spam Musubi is a different story. I could eat a shoe box full of those things. With that said and as with most all of my reviews, the rating is simply an indicator of how well I liked the food and service. Not to be taken as an indication of how authentic food is. I don't know. They have a large menu. I wanted to stay away from the sweet sticky stuff. I know I don't like it. My wife and I ordered two of the specialty plates. I had the #5 F's Hawaiian Spicy Chicken and my wife had the #12 Garlic Shrimp. The Hawaiian Spicy Chicken is a big serving of dark meat chicken grilled to a nice caramelized finish, with pepper and onion, on a bed of fresh shredded cabbage. It did have the spice. Excellent. My wife's grilled shrimp was cooked just right, with onion, served on a bed of chopped cabbage and mixed with roasted garlic bits. There was no doubt that she enjoyed the meal. The macaroni salad had a great flavor. I normally would avoid the stuff. Both of these are meals are recommended. The other meal that looks delicious is the #9. Loco Moco, and of course the Spam Musubi. The service is adequate. It is a minimal food truck/fast food style of operation. Order at the counter, your food is delivered to the table. I was craving for some Hawaiian food, decided to look on Yelp and saw this place pop up! This food truck is a deep blue color that made it very easy to find when driving on the road. Spam Masubi was basic. The spam didn't look or taste like it was seasoned with anything BUT it still tasted like a spam masubi. Hawaiian Beef plate was good! It tastes and was cut similar to the Korean's bulgogi. It was easy to eat and super flavorful. Short ribs plate was fairly good too. It had more of a BBQ/smoky flavor that traveled through to my nose with every bite. Katsu chicken was AMAZING. Fried to PERFECTION. It's actually very bland but the savior is the katsu sauce. When I tell you I wanted to bathe in that sauce? It was thick, it was sweet, it was salty, it was so goooood. Literally carried the dish. We just learned about this new food truck, so we gave it a try. Hawaiian food is not easy to find in Tulsa and it's been awhile since we've been to Hawaii. Dan got a beef bowl and I got a mini chicken meal. The owner gave us each a free musubi, which is spam on rice wrapped in sea weed. We both preferred the bowl to the mini meal. The mini meal was meat over rice and cabbage with a side of macaroni salad, and it came in a styrofoam takeout box. The bowl was meat over vegetables which seemed to be stir fried and it came in a plastic bowl. I didn't get the bowl because I didn't know how the vegetables were cooked. I didn't want beef on top of steamed vegetables. The vegetables had a nice flavor though, that blended well with the beef. Spam is very popular in Hawaii. We were puzzled by that while in Hawaii. Once we ordered it just to see if it was any different from spam in the United States. It was served with a lovely presentation, but it still tasted like spam. If you like spam, you will like musubi. The only downside is the price. While food trucks are the trend now, F's Hawaiian meals are comparable in price to lunches in full service restaurants. If I'm going to pay as much as I would in a full service restaurant, I would prefer eating in a full service restaurant. Hawaiian food is hard to find in Tulsa, though. read more
