Ok so the food is huge and amazing (most of the time). My favorites are the pork dishes (spicy garlic especially) and just recently had a spicy lamb hot pot which was delicious but maybe a little too full of spices. Don't get the terriyaki chicken -- they don't seem to do their Japanese dishes as well since it's a Chinese restaurant. The crab rangoon was okay. My boyfriend liked it but I thought it was too sweat without enough filling (my favorite crab rangoon thus far has been at Szechuan on University Ave). I'm excited to try something exciting next time, maybe some pork stomach? Any way I would highly recommend this place, but be told it is packed and loud! read more

Fugu is by far, one of the very few Chinese restaurants in downtown Madison that actually has authentic Chinese cuisine! I've been to China before and a lot of the flavors in the dishes were right on. My favorite dish has got to be the twice cooked pork. Try it sometime and you'll see what I mean! Large dishes to share. Had the Homestyle Tofu and Pineapple Rice and another dish, can't remember the name, but it was spicy hot. All fantastic and vegan. My friend received a recommendation from a colleague and we decided to try this place on a rainy afternoon. We were the only patrons for most of our meal which led to the waitress staring at us while we ate our food. I ordered pad thai and the waitress proceeded to question my choice and asked me more than once if I knew what it was. I was fairly insulted. My friend ordered king pao chicken and veggie potstickers. The food came quickly with the potstickers being first. The dumplings weren't steamed long enough and tasted raw. My lunch combo box with the pad thai included a spring roll that was 95 percent wrapper, a Japanese style salad that was very watery, orange slices that were the best part of the meal, and the main dish that was disgusting. The sauce on the noodles was incredibly sweet and there weren't any raw veggies to add texture. I couldn't eat most of it and I am not a picky eater. I sure hope that people who go there have a much better experience than we did. I certainly will never return. read more

The waitress was frowning all the time. I thought she was having a bad day and then I see her giggling away with other staff. We walked away without eating. I first tried this place after some friends brought some leftovers. Of course, that isn't necessarily an ideal first experience but the beef tripe and ox tongue was fantastic, so I had to check this place out. My husband and I went after work on a Friday night, so it was busy. The server took a bit to actually come by and acknowledge us, but considering how busy it was, I try to be understanding. Right away I ordered the beef tripe and ox tongue as well as the spicy fried intestines. My husband ordered twice cooked spicy pork. The beef tripe and ox tongue is really interesting to me because first and foremost, it's the first time I've had tripe in a dish other than menudo. My husband was really put off by the fact that it was not served hot, but still liked the flavor. I believe it was supposed to be served that way, at least from what I remember my friends telling me. The best part of the meal was the spicy fried intestines, hands down. I've had beef intestines before (tacos de tripa con cilantro y cebolla, yum), but these were pork so I wasn't sure what to expect. They were AMAZING. Served up sliced in a big pile with a lot of red chilies, they had a nice crisp on the outside and the inside was soft and juicy. My first time here. The space is rather barren and visually unappealing. I started by ordering one of their interesting-looking sake varieties by the glass, only to find out they are now served by the bottle only (at $20 and up). I went with the Ozeki, and the server didn't bother to unscrew the cap for me. I ordered wonton soup and the seafood and eggplant hotpot. The soup broth was hot and savory, and the wontons meaty. The "hotpot" was served before I was halfway done with soup. It was more like a tureen, and the food color matched Fugu's interior - yellowish green and brown. A large portion of eggplant and not so much seafood, just a few small shrimp, scallops, calamari and krabmeat, served with basic rice. The sauce was fine but calamari was tough. I imagine they focus more on carryouts judging by the disinterested wait staff and constantly ringing phone. I won't be back. read more

I used to get take out and dine in with Fugu for the past few years. Recently, the service has been horrible. From having to wait an hour for my food in the restaurant when no one is in it to constantly having to ask to have my take out order fixed, this place is going downhill. My most recent order, the delivery took an hour because their fax machine broke. I usually order the spicy garlic chicken, and this time when I ordered it looked different like it was kung pao chicken or something else. When I called to ask to correct my order, I was told they have a new chef and that is how they make the dish now. The "new version" of the spicy garlic chicken is horrible, contains large chunks of uncooked vegetables and no longer has the delicious sauce it once had. I thought the food was fantastic, except for the fact that they actually got our second dish wrong - but hey, at least the second dish was good even though we didn't order it. I actually consider myself a very understanding customer when restaurants are busy or if a small mistake happens; however, it was not busy at all when we went last night. It took about 20 minutes for them to come to our table the first time and It took them about another 30 minutes to bring two beers to us, which was after the fact I needed to remind them. There were many drinks that they were sold out of as well. I then asked for a water towards the end of the meal and it took about 20 minutes to get me a water when we were one table out of two at that time that were being served in the whole restaurant. Absolutely terrible service. I wanted to leave before we ordered our food, but didn't just because I didn't want to make a scene. read more

I ate at Fugu with several friends from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. They ordered a bunch of stuff that we shared - unfortunately I can't report the details of what we got because the names were foreign to me. Fugu offers dishes from several nations (including Thailand) but we focused on the schezuan since I think that is their specialty. My friends and I all agreed the food was really good - they said it is authentic schezuan style. It also helps that the restaurant is clean and comfortable (but a little loud). read more

It is not overly spicy and has really great flavor. As a regular to this establishment I receive extremely good service. Food here is excellent. Like a previous reviewer noted, where there is a red pepper on the menu, the dish is spicy. Not too spicy to enjoy, mind you, but you'll want lots of water. The only real knock against this place is the service. Everyone is nice enough but very slow and hard to get wait staff's attention for something. Relatedly, it is very crowded on weekend nights. I really just didn't like it that much. The Pad Thai was like Sweet and Sour instead of Peanut Sauce, and the curry was waaay salty. On the bright side, the Mouchi was really good, and you should definitely get it. This isn't the best town for Asian food, but you can do better. So I'm in town on a business trip and sick as a dog. I decided that only some Asian cuisine would do. I ordered fairly simple fare -- Wonton Soup with Garlic Pork Spareribs. The soup was bland with a greasy consistently. The two wontons had a strange texture.. Almost like they'd been boiling for hours. The flavor and texture was unpleasant. Then the Garlic Spareribs were breaded and we're not boneless. I figured this out when I made the mistake of biting into one. It would've been ok if it at least tasted good, but no. Okay food, TERRIBLE service. Had to order my soup and appetizer twice, after they didn't bring it the first time. Took them 40 minutes just to come around to take our order (it was not full). They walked past the table a handful of times, making eye contact, but failing to ask if we needed anything. Got my water filled once, after I had to interrupt a gossip session between the employees. As a chef, I can honestly say I've had one of the worst meals I've ever eaten last night, when pure (dangerous) drivel was delivered to my door. I ordered a coke (warm), chicken tom yum soup (mostly tendons), and beef brisket. First of all the chicken (if you can call tendons chicken) tom yum soup had a shrimp in it. Having a shrimp in a soup that is supposed to be chicken is like preparing fugu (pufferfish) the incorrect way (deadly). Since shellfish is ONE of the 8 most common food allergens one would imagine the kitchen staff would be vigilant. Someone could have died because of laziness. The beef brisket (yes I get it, it's fatty) was almost ALL fat. It was the most disgusting pile of puke I've ever witnessed. The only thing that was passable as anything ingestible was the piss warm coke. I WILL NEVER order from here again, and if you're smart, you won't either. Your life could depend on it. read more

I had the misfortune to see in the kitchen of this place a few times. I have watched raw food get dropped on the floor and just thrown back into the prep buckets. I have seen heaping spoonfuls of straight MSG thrown into single dishes of food. I have watched cooks and servers alike grab food off plates with bare hands just used to bus tables. I have smelled cigarette smoke coming from the kitchen with all the doors closed so they must be smoking in the basement. Plates have come out to me filthy or covered in caked on food. Glasses were gross to say the very least. And all of this topped by cooks who don't wash their hands and cockroaches seem to run the place. This says nothing at all of the service which is appalling. The servers don't speak English almost at all, and couldn't possibly care less about actually doing their jobs. Short version: Food tastes great, but I wouldn't eat there if you paid me based on cleanliness and service and food prep practices. read more
