The Jazz music playing at the time (Where's my Horace Parlan fans at)
    Hannah H.

As soon as we entered the restaurant we noticed how cozy it felt. The lighting and seating arrangement create an inviting atmosphere, with jazzy music playing in the background, perfect for a family dinner. There are paintings and hand-carved wooden masks on the walls, a blend of history and art that immerses the customer and complements the authentic cuisine. We started with the delicious Tempeh chips and ordered the Keju appetizer, a cream cheese-filled wonton made with green onions, which I preferred over Crab Rangoon. The main event was the sizzling shrimp. It arrived sizzling with a sweet and savory sauce that was absolutely chef's kiss. The sprouts added a nice crunch, while the veggies added a freshness. My party of three asked for extra rice to pair with the dish. Note: if you cannot handle spicy foods, make sure to ask for the mild version!

Mango curry and shredded chicken curry

Cute casual Indonesian spot on the Isthmus. I ordered the mango curry with chicken & partner ordered the shredded chicken coconut curry; we both got the lumpia. The lumpia was a little disappointing -- just a veggie roll with not a lot of flavor & no meat inside. Coming from an area in California with a lot of Southeast Asians, I think I expected more flavor. Shredded chicken curry was creamy but didn't have that much flavor. Partner kept eating my dish. Mango curry with chicken was the best dish we ordered, very flavorful and the way they marinated the chicken made it very tender. Very delicious dish and the only one I'd recommend of the 3. Service was quick and attentive. Restaurant wasn't too full when we entered, should be easy to walk in. I'd recommend the mango curry if you go but in general the other dishes we had weren't flavorful enough which was disappointing for an Indonesian restaurant.

Great selection of tasty vegan friendly options. Indo mac is a creamy curry like taste with bamboo shoots and a hint of spice. Sambal tempeh has a nice light sweetness with maybe a hint of acid? Nice and satisfying with a good flavor profile and good crispiness to the green beans.

I have been thinking about this restaurant and the food since we went because it was so good! A group of us went and we all tried something new and something we hadn't had before if we'd already been. Everyone loved their dishes! The serving sizes are large, so go hungry! Otherwise, it made for great leftovers the next day. The service was excellent too! Our server helped us pick the right dishes for us; he answered our questions and gave good recommendations. Can't wait to go back!

As the only Indonesian restaurant in Madison, this place definitely has decent food for what it is. I enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, but the self order system was definitely a bit strange and the ambiance was a bit crowded.

I took out lunch from here. I went for MINI RIJSTAFFEL FOR TWO. For $42, we can pick 4 dishes. That was true value. And it was good for 2 people for 2 meals. Rendang was my favorite item. It was very flavorful. Ayem gemprek was my second favorite item. Ayam kunyit and opor ayam were all good dishes.

Food was delicious! Service and ambiance was great. Will return when visiting Madison again. My husband grew up eating Indonesian food and it said it tasted just like what he ate.

Country music and Indo food not the First combination you'd think of but hey the rendang was really good! Personally I'd skip the satay as the chicken wasn't the best in my opinion. I'd go back again and again for the rendang. Service was great and quick. Thought it was a fun little find for sure plenty of parking in the front and back.

Went to Madison for a food adventure day with a friend, and Bandung was our first stop. We ordered the Bakmi Goreng with Beef (Indonesian egg noodles), Satay Ayam (marinated chicken skewers), and a bunch of appetizers including some of the most amazing crispy and juicy chicken wings, Otak-Otak (steamed fish cake in banana leaf), fried Tempeh Goreng, Lumpia, and a Krakatau Chicken slider. Every bite was excellent! I'm not sure I could pick a favorite dish because I would order every one of them again, but I want to try more menu items next time. Yes, there will be a next time! Go try this delicious cuisine for yourself!

One of my favorite restaurants in Madison! It's been a few months since I ordered from here so I was so excited to dine in. I ordered pangsit keju (cream cheese wonton, served with a side of siracha), Beef Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodles with egg and served with bean sprouts, ground peanuts, and green onion in a special house sauce), and 8 chicken wings (deep fried in peanut oil gourmet wings served with sweet and spicy peanut sauce). I loved the pangsit keju so much that I ordered two orders of it. The beef pad thai was missing something and I couldn't figure out what was missing. The wings were amazing and so crispy.

There is a separate bar area on the right hand side when you walk in.

Great place and tasty food! There is a check in offer, FYI! It was great trying some new dishes that I have not had like the Gulai Kambjng. Also some more familiar stuff on the menu, as well for those that like keeping the status quo and getting something familiar (but there was a fist time for everything, right so why not have a new first time!). The Nutty Coconut drink was to die for if you're a coconut lover like myself. So yum. I think I did say no simple syrup, I don't need really sweet drinks and it was perfectly sweet enough for me without it. And the coconut milk they used was the creamy good stuff. They do have some music or dance lessons at time in the bar side area on the right. Then there's the main dinner area on the left side. Hope everyone stops by and give the place a shot, it's worth it!

I can see why this is the first place that pops up in my browser when I searched for "Indonesian food" in Madison because it is so delicious! The wait for delivery wasn't too long either. My crew ordered three entrees and multiple add-ons on a Saturday evening and it took an hour for the food to be delivered. The chicken satay, cream cheese wontons, and pad Thai really are superb. The rice cakes that come with the chicken skewers are also a special, textural treat. I highly recommend getting your next order of something tasty and filling here!

    BoPo Chicken

Wow, this was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We ordered several dishes and all were very flavorful and tasty. All the dishes were light and didn't leave you with this gross full feeling when finished. Favorites at the table were the Curry Eggplant, Capcay Goreng and BoPo Chicken.

Okay Indonesian food. Not very authentic. Some dishes that I know are very different here. Pleasant location near downtown.

I got pad thai to go, and it was so so good. A little spicy, but in the best way. Only thing I wish for are bigger servings!

She was very careful about our allergy concerns and made sure to take care of us (my daughter has a severe fish allergy and needed her ramen free of fish cake & sauce). The Thai boba tea was delicious, too. I discovered that I prefer Thai ice tea better without boba, but I really enjoyed it in this form, as well. I enjoyed the clean and comfortable atmosphere. I was thankful for the interior photograph left by a previous Yelper because the Yelp reviews I read didn't mention that the place had a dine-in an option. The dining space want just accommodating, but lovely, as well.

So, we went to Zen Ramen. First off, this establishment is nice and clean. The one staff person there, was extremely gracious and friendly. We were promptly greeted and sat at a table. I ordered the gyoza, for an appetizer. The gyoza was cooked to perfection, with a very subtle very soft crunch on the outside, and very tender ground pork inside. The gyoza plus the sauce were delicious. I ordered the classic tonkotsu ramen, and my husband ordered the seafood ramen, with red pepper chili oil, which they served on the side. He poured the whole amount in! He likes the heat. He loved his dish immensely. We both ordered our dishes with Udon noodles. My tonkotsu ramen, well, I wish it had more substance to it. The pork was overcooked and dry, but did have a nice soy taste to the outside of the pork. The broth was delicious, but it felt like the Udon noodles were a filler, and excessive. The marinated eggs were delicious. I didn't see any sesame seed in my dish. I felt like I ate more noodles than anything else in the dish. Basically, my husband dish had a lot more in it, then I had. It's all about choice. The one staff member serving was very friendly, and we will go back again. Beware, you will be full after eating here.

They truly live up to their name "Hot-N-Spicy" and the cultural significance of the Thai chili pepper which is a food symbol of Thailand which often represents hospitality, warmth, and resilience! They bring all the spice and don't hold back! If you are not used to spice/spicy hot dishes, I suggest you start at level one spice and work your way up. They will ask you on dishes made with chili peppers what spice level you want 1-4 and can even make it hotter also! Hot-N-Spicy is genuinely unique because they offer Issan food dishes and flavors that is uniquely from the Issan/Isan Northeast region of Thailand that is heavily influenced by Lao and Cambodian flavors with the use of heat, fresh herbs, and the heavy use of fermented fish sauce that brings different flavors different from other regions of Thailand. As an update, Hot-N-Spicy used to be located in the back of the Viet Hoa Market. It is now located next door from the market in a larger space in the same strip mall that allows for a more comfortable sit-down seating experience of a full restaurant. I have tried almost everything on their menu and have never been disappointed! For appetizers, I love their angel wings which are deboned chicken wings stuffed with chicken, carrot, and bean thread noodles fried to pure crispy perfection! Their most popular selling appetizers are their amazingly addictively delicious crab rangoons! Their chicken satay is also a must try! I also recommend trying their beef jerky which is so delicious, it often sells out quickly during the day! Their main entrees are so outstanding, it is hard just to order one entree! My absolute favorite that I recommend is their steak Laab which is the best Laab I have had in Madison! It is heavily influenced with Isaan flavors/culture with minced beef, tripe, red onion, cilantro, mint, fresh lime juice, rice powder, fish sauce and scallions. I love the beef steak Laab because it is unlike anything you will ever taste with so much flavor from a combination of flavors with hint of sour with the lime, salty/umami/pungence from the fish sauce, balanced with refreshing different herbs, texture with the tripe, while the toasted rice powder gives this dish a tiny bit of crunch/texture that gives a subtle nutty flavor! This dish is a minced meat salad traditionally eaten with your hands and sticky rice/vegetables like cucumber. I also really enjoy their Pad Thai, Pho, and Crispy Noodle Lad Na! Your visit wouldn't be complete without quenching your thirst with either their Thai iced coffee/tea! Hot-N-Spicy remains at the top of my list for Thai/Lao cuisine! If you are looking for true authentic flavors/traditionally prepared dishes, definitely try Hot-N-Spicy!

The combination of romaine, cucumbers, carrots, cilantro, mint, homemade daikon, and the crispy fried egg roll wrapper created the perfect balance of freshness and crunch. The nem nuong dipping sauce was so good that I ordered extra. I also tried the Panang Red Curry, and it was outstanding. The curry was rich, creamy, slightly sweet, and packed with flavor. I ordered level 1 spice, and it was the perfect amount of heat without overwhelming the dish. The homemade curry paste, coconut milk, basil, peppers, and jasmine rice came together beautifully. It's also been great to see this local business grow. What started as a takeout spot inside Viet Hoa Market has expanded into a larger space on Monona Drive, and it's easy to see why. The food is consistently delicious, the portions are generous, and the new location offers plenty of seating. If you're craving fresh spring rolls, flavorful curry, or simply a great meal, Hot N Spicy is absolutely worth a visit. Added bonus the service was AMAZING!!!
