I've never had an issue getting a table when I've tried to dine in, but I most often get takeout. It's pretty dark in the restaurant but it's cozy and there's a good amount of seating. Some of my favorites are the mango curry, mung bean curry, and Indo mac. They have a really good vegan selection. I also love to buy their blocks of tempeh for my own cooking. Something I want to call out is how thoughtfully they pack to-go orders. Everything seems to be recyclable or compostable. Everything is labeled, the soup containers are taped on the side so they don't spill, and they put a piece of cardboard in the bottom of the bag to keep everything upright. Service: Extraordinary!! Our waiter was so friendly and knowledgeable about the food and the cocktail options. He took great care of us and made us feel welcomed and appreciated. Food: Wow!! We ordered 3 entrees to share amongst 3 people- "medium" spice level- and each was perfect! We even had extra to take home. My favorite was the tempeh. I didn't know how much potatoes are used in Indonesian cooking. This Irish girl appreciated that! Each of the 3 dishes included potatoes in some way and each were different and delicious. We have heard people talk about this place for years but never got around to giving it a try until this past weekend. With a City Tin discount coupon in hand we popped in early on a Friday evening. Good thing we were early because it was pretty full soon after we arrived. It appears you can call for a reservation which we will do next time. After ordering a beer and after the kind waitress gave us instructions on how to see the full menu through a QR code we placed our order. (They do have a physical menu but that is the short version - more is on-line. She did say that to get to the QR menu is complicated and she was right - thus the coaching session!) I saw from one of the reviews a recommendation on the Krakatoa Chicken so I ordered it. The presentation is not unlike fajitas with a smoking hot plate of lightly fried chicken, onions, carrots and mushrooms brought to the table. The server then poured on the sweet sauce and the steam enveloped the restaurant. Quite the show and it was delicious. My wife got the Bakmi Jahe noodle dish, which was on the short menu, and very tasty and a huge portion. Prices were reasonable for the portions and the quality. We will definitely return. read more

Cute casual Indonesian spot on the Isthmus. I ordered the mango curry with chicken & partner ordered the shredded chicken coconut curry; we both got the lumpia. The lumpia was a little disappointing -- just a veggie roll with not a lot of flavor & no meat inside. Coming from an area in California with a lot of Southeast Asians, I think I expected more flavor. Shredded chicken curry was creamy but didn't have that much flavor. Partner kept eating my dish. Mango curry with chicken was the best dish we ordered, very flavorful and the way they marinated the chicken made it very tender. Very delicious dish and the only one I'd recommend of the 3. Service was quick and attentive. Restaurant wasn't too full when we entered, should be easy to walk in. Went to Madison for a food adventure day with a friend, and Bandung was our first stop. We ordered the Bakmi Goreng with Beef (Indonesian egg noodles), Satay Ayam (marinated chicken skewers), and a bunch of appetizers including some of the most amazing crispy and juicy chicken wings, Otak-Otak (steamed fish cake in banana leaf), fried Tempeh Goreng, Lumpia, and a Krakatau Chicken slider. Every bite was excellent! I'm not sure I could pick a favorite dish because I would order every one of them again, but I want to try more menu items next time. Yes, there will be a next time! One of my favorite restaurants in Madison! It's been a few months since I ordered from here so I was so excited to dine in. I ordered pangsit keju (cream cheese wonton, served with a side of siracha), Beef Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodles with egg and served with bean sprouts, ground peanuts, and green onion in a special house sauce), and 8 chicken wings (deep fried in peanut oil gourmet wings served with sweet and spicy peanut sauce). It's a lovely restaurant with good service. However, I wasn't impressed with the food. The flavors were all too underwhelming for my taste, which is usually a tell-tale sign that an ethnic establishment has modified their recipes to cater to...you know - a blander palate. It was very disappointing. Also, I don't know what happened to all of my photos that were uploaded. I can see why this is the first place that pops up in my browser when I searched for "Indonesian food" in Madison because it is so delicious! The wait for delivery wasn't too long either. My crew ordered three entrees and multiple add-ons on a Saturday evening and it took an hour for the food to be delivered. The chicken satay, cream cheese wontons, and pad Thai really are superb. Bandung certainly delivers! We're big fans of Asian food, but this was our first trial of Indonesian cuisine and we will be back. Bandung allows for quick ordering on your phone, making waiting for your waiter a thing of the past. That said, traditional ordering is still available if that's your style. Food arrived promptly, was well presented, and the quantity for the price was amazing. We ordered the curry fried rice and the Bakmi Jahe, both of which were fantastic. We're really into heat and asked them to prepare it spicy. The cook took that to heart and made one of the spiciest meals we've ever had. Poor food and never going back. The picture of the receipt is all I'm including to remain tasteful. The Gulai Kambing (Kambing means Goat) is Tough meat with salty salty sauce. Appears to have been cooked days ago and microwaved. The Satay Ayam was also not freshly done but taken from the fridge and tossed on some hot plate for a bit. The Nasi Goreng with Shrimp - was the worse! Shrimp smelled bad (not fresh) and the fried rice was soggy - how can fried rice be soggy? The Gado Gado visit www.madamechu.com This one had over boiled green beans and no just NO to the peanut sauce. Get Madame Chu to teach them how it's suppose to be done. The Daging Rendang was the better one from the poorly cooked rest but again Rendang is a-lot of work so credit to getting that taste right at least. BTW I do not like them getting their money upfront when you have not even been served and don't know what the service will be like. Came here for a casual dinner. It's nice that there is some parking spots available in the lot, just a little cramped. Indo Mac with Beef - I liked the thick rice noodles and the sauce was creamy and caught onto the noodles nicely. I always love fried shallots and green onions on noodle dishes so I thought this was a solid choice. Krakatau Chicken - the sauce closely resembles sweet and sour chicken from a Chinese restaurant. What makes this dish stand out though is that they have a different breading on the chicken breast than most which made it really crispy on the outside even smothered in sauce. Presentation was nice on a sizzling plate, but my only suggestion is to add more veggies - we barely had any. Dish also comes with white rice. I'd never had Indonesian food before trying this place, but I was hooked after my first visit. The flavors are delicious, and you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We love the Semur & Krakatau Chicken for entrees or the Bakmi Goreng & Pad thai if you're in the mood for noodles. (Note, the pad thai does have a little bit of a kick!). Most things come in large and small, but I would recommend large duh. During the pandemic, we have relied heavily on Bandung during those nights where I am just FED UP with cooking. I recently moved downtown and now Bandung is a 2 minute walk from me, which sounds dangerous. Surprisingly, I've only ever gotten takeout from here - even before I moved downtown. Their takeout service is quick and they have you sit at the bar where they give you water and make sure you're taken care of. I ordered the Eggplant Curry to-go. I loved it. They gave a really good portion. I couldn't finish it. The curry wasn't too spicy either, which is perfect for me. In the past, I've gotten items with tempeh. They cook tempeh really well! I love Bandung! I've been in a handful of times now, and every visit has been a wonderful experience. The cocktails at the Nutty Bar are fun and creative. The Thai Long Island Iced Tea is truly an amazing creation. Be careful, they go down easy! As far as food goes - omg. You will not be disappointed. We always start with the satay skewers. You can get it in chicken, tofu, lamb or beef, but I prefer the beef. Tender, succulent morsels of steak served in a creamy, flavorful peanut sauce. The peanut sauce, for real, you could put on anything and make it wonderful. I've tried a few of the noodle dishes now and I don't have a favorite. They have all been really great. Flavorful, well spiced, good texture.. you can't go wrong. Service especially has always been on point. PJ has been the bartender a few times when I have been there, and most recently he was our server. Super attentive and offers great suggestions. Overall - 12/10 recommend! read more

I went here with a girlfriend because they had an event donating a portion of proceeds to DAIS. Ambience was cool and laidback, with dimmer lighting and beautiful colorful artwork throughout the restaurant. They also have a little parking lot, which is convenient. It's next to / part of The Nutty Bar, and happy hour specials were only available in the bar area. That part was a little confusing since it seemed like the same restaurant, but oh well. My drink (the subaraya sunrise?) was pretty good. Rummy and juicy, so I can't complain. It was also a LOT. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. I got the sizzling shrimp and my friend got one of their vegetarian tempeh dishes. Both were flavorful and mine was a little spicy (not too much). We each got the small size and thought it was the perfect amount. Mine came with 4 shrimp, veggies, and lots of rice. I would definitely get it again, but there was also so much on the menu that I wanted to try... so we'll see what I order next time. Only downside is that the menu says they bring complimentary tempeh chips with dinner, but we didn't get any until my friend ordered some. They weren't complimentary and they also came after our meals. Bit of a bummer, but not a deal breaker. I liked the consistency but think they'd be best with some kind of dipping sauce. One of my friends got the tempeh tofu which had good flavor, and my other friend got the bopo chicken which was... interesting. It was kinda drenched in a sauce that had an ok flavor. I purchased about 200 dollars of food from them in one week. They billed me for a dish which they left off the take out order. I called them because as a result my guests were hungry. I asked for a comp for the dish they didn't include....11 dollars. One of the 5-6 owners argued with me and then grumpily agreed to give me a free dish on my next order. I called the next day to order another meal and was told by the waitress that there was no info regarding my credit. When I asked to speak to the owner she complained that there were a number of owners and she didn't have time for me. I said all i want is the dish i was promised. Her response was "Sir, I'm not going to take your abuse!" Bandung will never have my business again and the prices are high while the portions are small. read more

This has become a go to for us in Madison. They're super fast and easy for take out (Grubhub usually lists that it will take 45 minutes or something, but it's usually ready way more quickly if they aren't busy). I've gone in small groups and for large parties, and they've been really accommodating. They have an extensive vegan and vegetarian section on the menu, and make their own tempeh in house. You can purchase chase the tempeh to prepare at home, too. If you dine in during dinner, they bring out complimentary tempeh chips, which are great (although they do seem to occasionally forget to bring them out). The Indo Mac is delicious and creamy; I don't love bamboo shoots, and they have let me substitute broccoli. The Tempeh Satay is also pretty wonderful, although probably not as filling as some other options. The Squash Curry is also very flavorful. And I almost always get a coconut milk Thai Tea. I haven't tried it, but my friends really love the Nutty Coconut as well. read more
