this place was right next to our hotel during our visit in ames. we ate here twice and got the hibachi experience, and it was absolutely amazing! the prices are very reasonable especially for hibachi, the service was great, and the food + portion sizes were delicious! both of our hibachi chefs were great, and when we came for dinner the second time around, our chef who goes by the name "G" was so friendly and chatted with us while cooking our meal. we had one mishap when trying to order food for lunch to-go and our meals came super late due to a problem with their systems, but the manager and owner were very helpful in resolving the issue with my boyfriend. overall, i would definitely recommend giving fuji a try if you are in town. :) read more

The people who work here are very nice let me start off with that. However, it is dirty. The forks we pulled out of the napkins were dirty with dry food on them. It took forever for someone to bring us water. I asked for new napkins and forks and they were replaced. I ordered a miso soup. It was completely cold. Sent it back. Came back a second time cold. It took forever even though the place really wasn't busy and we were all served our entrees at different times. By the time my niece got her food I was done eating and my husband was half way done with his food. Also they need to update their online presence if you're coming here for the koi pond, the koi are no longer there. The pond is still there, just no koi. read more

My daughter and I had a lunch date at Fuji because she told me that's where she wanted to go and she wanted sushi. I have been to Fuji several times and I gotta admit the llast time I went to Fuji I wasn't blown away but this time I was! I was instantly excited when I saw the autumn leaves rolling was there because my wife and I had it a couple years ago and loved it. Spicy scallops and crunchy flakes topped with salmon, avacado and spicy mayo (pictured 3rd from the left) The California roll was one of the better I've had. The bites seem a little bigger even! (Pictured at the top) We also got the orange glaze roll. It was delicious - a California roll topped with crab, carmelized spicy mayo and eel sauce, then topped with masago. (Pictured far left) Then we had the Halloween roll (pictured 2nd from the left) I can't remember what was in thst but it was topped with salmon and spicy mayo. And last but not least we had the sushi sandwich, that's right the sushi sandwich! (Pictured far right) the sushi sandwich was awkward to eat but we decided to pick them up and eat them like sandwiches. They were generous with the spicy tuna, eel, crabmeat and avacado on the inside, with tobiko, eel sauce and spicy mayo on the outside. Also very delicious! Came here for my anniversary and the food wasn't flavorful. I had to use YumYum sauce to make the food have some flavor. I ordered the chicken, steak, and shrimp meal. The cook had extra food apparently and it was only me and one other person who ordered shrimp. He started going around and asking people if they wanted shrimp over me. I had less rice than everyone else as well. I had to say no veggies in order to get a decent amount of rice for my meal. I got this meal to eat for both dinner tonight and for lunch the next day. I do not recommend coming here if you've been to other hibachi places who have more flavor with their food. The only upside of all of this is that there was a special for buying one adult meal you get the other one half off. The guy was pretty nice for the most part other than he giving away food that people did not order.. I will not be coming back here. read more

This restaurant used to be great. Today however, I had hair in my food. They did remake,it, but still. My shoes stuck to the carpet by the kitchen entrance. The walls have soot caked on. Upon entering the soles of my shoes stuck to the carpet. It was awful. Every step was so sticky it pulled the shoe off the back of my heel. Then we were sat. A man came to take our order and brought us water. Two of us ordered soft drinks. We had to ask four times for our drinks. My husband had something floating in his and asked for different water. The family that came in 20 minutes after us started on their salads and we weren't served our salads. Once the salads came they began cooking the food. There wasn't any entertainment or engagement with any of us like before-the chef didn't engage with any of us. We got our rice and then he started cooking the meat. The veggies weren't coming in butter it oil like usual so they were nearly raw when we got them. The woman to my right found a hair in her salad. The child that was with us was served hibachi chicken when we ordered chicken nuggets. The nuggets came AFTER everyone was done eating. The infamous fish tank was so filthy you couldn't see the fish! It was disguising. The entire experience was awful and the bill was $75! Never again. read more

I hadn't been to this restaurant in over 10 years. It was great to return during a non busy time. We all went to celebrate my mother's birthday. We had a great time, the hibachi grill artist was so much fun! The food was delicious!! It really hit the spot. The only thing was a little disappointing was even though the service was super nice and friendly, it was very slow. We didn't have anyone come to us to get drink orders for about 15 minutes once we were sat down. Once we had an assigned server, he was very sweet and nice, just not the most attentive. I visited this establishment during the COVID-19 pandemic, but right before businesses were shut down. I was thoroughly impressed with this place. Granted, this was my only visit here, but if I return to the Ames area, I'll be sure to come back if I can. I ordered the hibachi scallop entree. Expecting the smaller size scallops typical of cheaper restaurants, I was surprised with the full sized scallops. And it was very good. Service was great. Nice waiter who was attentive. Clean establishment as well. It took cleanliness serious. Restroom doors were propped open to avoid having to open them by hand. I know you need to adjust your expectations for Japanese food in Iowa, but this was exceptionally bad. The sushi was bad, the miso soup was bad and the tempura was bad. You should not be able to call yourself a Japanese Steakhouse and have food this bad. You can buy frozen Japanese food from the grocery store and do better. That they charge steakhouse prices for extremely subpar food is criminal. Be warned you will pay twice, first after the meal and then again in the bathroom when you get home. Been all over the place and this is probably the worst Japanese food I've had anywhere in my entire life. Avoid at all costs. Alcohol price on point. Salad dressing and miso soup was a bit watery and tofu chunks in miso were smaller than my pinky nail. Came here for an early dinner last Sunday evening. Personally I would have gone with hibachi, but since we weren't asked and were simply shown to a regular booth, sushi it was. First thing we noted - a very large drink menu with everything under the sun, but we stuck with beer and wine. After some studying of the menu (and hibachi FOMO ugh) we got a round of miso soups for my brother and mother, and I did the avocado salad. Nothing too special, but the creamy ginger dressing was amazing and I kept it afterwards to smother my sushi in. Next up the soft shelled crab appetizer, which was a bit too breaded and was perhaps one of the worst I've ever had. Four sushi rolls to split, really can't remember which ones (all specialty rolls) and they were pretty decent, along with some sashimi. I will note though that the egg sashimi was one of the best I've ever had. Since my family apparently has a sweet tooth, they needed to get the ice cream tempura (vanilla not green tea....ugh thanks bro) and the Bailey's cheesecake. Both of which were great! Is this place amazing? No. But with limited sushi options in Ames, you'll learn to love it. read more

Ambiance was ok, service not great, food terrible! Hibachi chef did nothing but light grill on fire and pour lemon water in a couple peoples mouths. That was it. Food was so bad we didn't finish. Rice had no flavor, lobster was under cooked and fishy tasting. Steak was over cooked, vegetables had no flavor either. Place was dirty , old food on the floor, boxes of chop sticks, etc. stacked behind us. Server never came back to refill drinks. Had to run him down to get another sapora.
