The sushi here is so fresh and phenomenal, I can't get enough of this place! Everything was very fresh and the service was great.

When Fuji first opened I use to go there at least once a week. I loved the owners, but I haven't gone as much recently and I think Amy(owner/waitress) must have forgotten who I was because after paying I was told not to come back! Her exact words were that I "took up a table and didn't order enough food!!!!" I loved the miso soup and love their house ginger dressing. The person I was with had sushi and asked for a salad that was never brought. I was really sad about this experience and as much as I would love to go back there I couldn't just because I was shocked at the way I was treated. I have eaten plenty of sushi in and around Chicago and this little hole in the wall place in Portage Northwest Indiana is my favorite by far. The staff remembers us every time we come in. Will ask automatically if we want some tea (green). All the rolls are exceptional! My personal favorites are the Fuji Spicy Maki Combination, California Salmon Roll, California Tuna Roll, Fire Dragon Roll, and the Green River Roll. They always give me EXTRA Wasabi as I am a bona fide addict. This place is great and rivals anything you will find in downtown Chicago minus the flare. Enjoy! read more

My boyfriend & I frequent Fuji; not because it happens to be the ONLY decent sushi place in the NWI area, but because it is EXCELLENT! They have a very large selection of traditional & specialty sushi rolls and sashimi. The fish is fresh, the roll combinations are thoughtfully put together and the staff is very friendly. I have been eating sushi from a very young age & Fuji has some of he best sushi I've had & this is including Chicago and east/west coast cities. They also have great edamame, ginger salad & tempura. I always get sushi but I know others who have had regular entrees & were very pleased. It is a little disappointing that they are not BYOB, however, that does not stop us from having a great time. The food speaks for itself & is fairly priced. I would recommend Fuji to anyone looking for quality sushi. By the way, we visited BC Osaka in Merrillville once off a recommendation from a friend and I will never go back. The quality was horrible & I feel fortunate I did not get sick. The sushi is fabulous as is their cooked food. The prices are great and the service staff are kind and accommodating. We typically get a Philadelphia roll in addition to the lunch specials that they have. The fried rice is delicious as well. I highly recommend this place. went first time for our daughter's graduation 5/13/10. other customers were served prior to us. toook 2 hrs. food was ok. .they were busy. we didn't complain. went back following week for lunch. arrived at 2:30pm. we were the only customers. same waitress. asked for lunch menu & she was relunctant to hand the menu & we told her the lunch special was until 3pm. she was rude & obnoxious especially when i asked what a particular item was. we decided not to eat there & before we left, i told her she was the rudest person i've ever met. she waved her arm & told us to "go home. you don't come here all the time anyway". i asked for the manager & in a loud voice stated "i'm the manager! you go home" told her we will let all our friends & family know how we were treated. needless to say, we will not return to an establishment that treat their customers rudely. read more

This literally was my end all be all of Sushi places.....I wouldn't even try another place. I was a regular customer for sure....BUT they recently remodeled and replaced the original Sushi chef (which I think was the owner) and I literally got sick 2/3 last times I've been there! My friend got so sick she said she's NEVER going back. I'm not quite sure what happened. I'm so disappointed. I can't figure out if it was the sushi fish itself or something as simple as not keeping the sauces chilled to a proper temp, but I'm beside myself. I LOVE SUSHI but I don't know where else to go.....and not get sick. The salad dressing used to be my fav but they changed up the recipe or bought it from somewhere else and I'm not digging it. The miso soup is also a lil different but still good. It is a lil pricey but used to be worth it. But not as much anymore. I'm so sad read more

If you are looking for tasty food this is a great place. Lobster roll is awesome. Why one star? If you want to see the meanest most unprofessional waitress/manager on the face of the earth this is the place. Prepare to be told you haven't ordered enough order more....or the best was when we went to order the cucumber roll and the waitress said "no, order eel it tastes better". I will never go back to this resteraunt. I bring busniness colleagues here when they are in town. Never again. On our last trip to Florida I became addicted to all things Sushi! I really didn't expect much from any in Indiana! I was pleasantly surpised! We actually ate there twice in 24 hours and my daughter wanted to come back again before we headed home! We particularly enjoyed the Golden Rolls and the spicy mayo! YUM! read more

This is the go to spot for my girlfriend and I when it comes to sushi. At first I was apprehensive about a sushi joint in Portage but I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend the Spicy 2-in-1 for the non-raw sushi eaters and the staff is amazing at what they do. When anyone ever asks me if I'd like to grab sushi, they're usually thinking to go somewhere in the city, but Fugi is always the first place that comes to my mind. They're sushi is easily 5 stars. (The dream roll is seriously to die for!) The only reason I gave them 4 stars is because the actual food is just okay, and they don't have fountain soda, just cans. If prices where more cheaper for the quality that you get then it probably be more worth it. Also menu options is targeted towards a more American idea of "sushi". I can assure you, there is NO other place in NW Indiana to get sushi. I live very close and it's always been great, any day of the week. My boyfriend and I have only eaten in the restaurant once, and we went to the liquor store a few doors down and bought some Asahi beer to eat with our food. =) Love the byob. My ONLY issue, is that every other time, I've ordered carryout it's never ready on time. They don't make it til you get there, so don't bother ordering ahead. Even though I usually order the same type dishes, as amateur as it sounds, I've been ordering different things, because they have new menus with pictures! =) Bottom line: It's the best place within 40 miles. I'm a picky eater, used to live on the west coast, have been to Fuji 12-15 times, and it's been good every single time, and have tried it on different days of the week. Me and my boyfriend went there tonite, and it was just awful! We got the sushi for 2, which was 18 pieces of nigiri and 2 rolls. The rolls weren't bad, but the quality of the fish was horrid.It was warm, and had a texture like dried up playdough. You could tell it had not been prepared correctly. If your experience with sushi is limited to the little plastic boxes they have at grocery stores, this probably seemed good. It took us an hour to get our food, and from the talk I heard around the seating area, we weren't the only ones. IF I ever go back, I'll try some of the more festive looking rolls, but i'll never try the nigiri again. The only good thing can say is that the waitress was very very sweet. read more

I'd say Japonais in Chicago is good competition for this place..Japonais has the best sushi I've ever had, but FUJI comes in a very close second. You will not find better sushi in Northwest Indiana. Way better than BC Osaka, albeit pricey and understandably so. These cooks are not just chefs, but artists. So many fresh and balanced flavors, and you get done but you just wish that party in your mouth would never end. My favorite here is the Disney Roll, but I've had a variety of other sushi rolls and tempura that are just up to par. And the fried green tea/Vanilla bean ice-cream option for dessert is something you must try. read more
