We have been here several times and enjoy the food. Our order consisted of gyoza (pork potstickers), chicken fried rice and a jalepeño roll. This is a fantastic restaurant, and I'm lucky to live so close to it! First off, the service is incredible. I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for my food, and the server is very polite. The miso soup is the best I have ever had, it has a wonderful balance of flavors, the perfect amount of tofu and scallions, and it always comes to the table piping hot. If you've never had sushi, this is the place to try it. The fish is fresh and flavorful, and the sushi chef creates such a beautiful presentation on the plate, it's almost too pretty to eat! Make sure to specify if you'd prefer not to have wasabi on your nigiri though, because they come loaded with it otherwise. The sushi rolls are delightful, I recommend the butterfly roll. Their tempura is light and airy, yet so perfectly crisp. All of their meat dishes come out incredibly tender and flavorful. The food is good but the woman who runs this place can get upset if it's busy. When she gets busy she will get mad if you order additional food. Makes no sense because more food = more money. One draw back is no liquor sales and you can no longer bring it with you. Sushi is not the same without Saki. But it's good sushi for the price. read more

Best sushi for NW Indiana residents who typically have to go to Chicago for decent sushi. Great variety of rolls. They have all of the typical crazy maki rolls, which is what I go for. I have also heard that their udon is very good. Their potstickers are excellent as well. read more

My husband and I would rather come here than to House of Kobe which can be extremely crowded on the weekends. The service is quite pleasant and the food well, right on the money. Everything we've had here has been delicious and fresh. It's also BYOB. Tempura served here is less greasy than at Kobes. Udon soup is great! May not the best spot for your picky-eating children (or adults). We used to bring our 2 year old, and the flavors were a bit overwhelming for him. Not sure if it's "as good as it gets" since I'm by no means a Japanese food maven but I come from good food capitol of the world (New Orleans). And spent a lot of time working in that industry. I think I can easily say this place is a hidden gem . Pound for pound the best Japanese food I've ever had. Well worth the visit. Not very ostentatious as it sits in a small town strip mall next to the bargain department store. Inside it's a restaurant. Not heavy on oriental decor it could easily sell meatloaf and you'd feel right at home....until you see the menu. These guys are like a few places I've been to that seem to offer every culinary device known to the Japanese culture save BeniHana style hibachi. It's real hard to pick unless you know what you like (or more precisely what you DON'T like). Just a ton of good looking possibilities. We're pretty pedestrian in out Asian food preferences so we stuck to some favorites and shared plates like we usually do. Just perfect. Tasty and fresh. Way more than I'd hoped for. My wife, who's about the pickiest eater I've ever shared a meal with had no complaints.... NOT ONE. I, who many would claim am almost as picky wanted to buy a house in town so we could visit more often. Outstanding. Service was friendly and attentive. Professional. Nothing here was fishy or gross, and the service was friendly, if a bit awkward and quite slow. We visited at lunch time on a weekday and this place was completely empty. That was not a good sign, but hey, someone has to discover the new great places. This wasn't one. We had four rolls, all of them were bland and heavy on rice. I'm not sure what other Yelpers were served, but our food was bland, boringly presented, and the best we could say was, at least the seafood seemed fresh. read more

It took forever for my order! Was not very happy with the quality and quantity! Especially since it's so expensive!! Get 100% better sushi from the stand inside Town 'n' Country!! Fuji has some of the best sushi I've had. They have a wide variety of rolls that are very original and tasty. They also have other dishes on the menu if you don't want sushi - pretty typical Japanese steakhouse kind of dishes.The service is also great - the chefs are pleasant and the lady who sat us was very sweet. The restaurant has been fairly quiet each time I've been, but I think it adds to the intimate atmosphere if you're there on a date! read more

Went to fuji for the first time on Saturday. We were a little nervous about eating sushi in Portage. When showed up at 6:00 pm. The place only had 4 people dining at the time. We ordered 3 different dishes and 2 different soups. They were amazing. Very impressive. We will deffently go back. The only downfall was that the place did fill up. Not one open seat. The service did get slow. They could have used one more server on he floor. read more

I'm always skeptical when I see an Asian restaurant in northwest Indiana especially a sushi restaurant. I've had my share of many excellent Sushi restaurants in Chicago and in other big cities and to my surprise, Fuji impressed me. I went for lunch and had the chicken teriyaki bento box and a spicy tuna with avocado maki. Everything about $15 which included a miso soup, spring rolls, and salad. Food and service was wonderful, the dining area is quiet, chairs are fancy, decor very Asian. Wow, an authentic Japanese restaurant in NW Indiana! Wow, this is normally my go to place for sushi. Yesterday, I drove 30 miles round trip to pick up 2 sushi rolls and some sashimi to go (total was $21). 5 piece sashimi for $8.95. Chef's Choice as to what fish was used. That is okay. Except: got home and the pieces were tiny. And TWO of the 5 were ARTIFICIAL CRAB MEAT LOGS!! Well, you just lost a customer. Stopped in for lunch after seeing great reviews on Yelp. Not at all impressed. Hot green tea was luke warm, even when refilled. The only way to get fried rice for my daughter was to order a $9 huge portion of it even though my husband and I both ordered full meals for ourselves. We just wanted a small side of fried rice for her and that was not an option. The spicy California roll was just a California roll drizzled with spicy mayo. Not worth the additional $3-$4 charge compared to a regular California roll. At most sushi restaurants the spicy California roll is made by mixing spicy mayo into the crab and then making the roll and topping it with spicy mayo. Unfortunately, it also tasted like it had been sitting in the refrigerator for hours and was ice cold. I know sushi is supposed to be cold, but this was clearly made earlier and kept cold as opposed to the ingredients being kept cold. You can tell the difference. The miso soup was also luke warm. The house salad dressing was odd and there was way too much of it. The jalapeño yellowtail appetizer was well done and tasted great, but everything else was mediocre at best. Although the sushi was super creative, fresh and VERY fairly priced...the other customers in the restaurant ruined our experience. A table of two ordered, I kid you not, at least $250 worth of sushi in one sitting. It was not crowded, but their ridiculous order took almost 40 minutes, leaving us to wait for almost and hour for our food and at least 30 minutes for appetizers. My mother-in-law is a nurse who said that all of her coworkers had recommended Fuji to her for sushi. She told my wife and I about it since she knows we love sushi. I naturally was very excited because there isn't a time that I'm not in the mood for sushi. We drove to Portage from her parents house to try it out. We ordered the Sushi for 2 dinner. It came with 18 pieces of sushi, california roll, and chef's choice roll (spicy tuna in our case). Overall, I was not impressed with the sushi. A couple of the nigiri salmon pieces were chewy and the hamachi was a little too fishy. Some of the rice also tasted undercooked. The spicy tuna roll was nothing special. It had barely any flavor and spice. I expect my spicy tuna to be spicy. The california roll was pretty standard. I would have given them a third star, but the lady manager was a bit cranky tonight. read more

I was in town for a training course for solar. I looked up local places on Yelp and saw the reviews for this place. There are some great sushi places where I am from in California and Fuji did not disappoint. I had the yellowtail with jalapeño and the Phoenix roll. Both were great. Walked in on a Thursday night. We were the only people in the restaurant. Ordered our drinks and waited over 10 minutes and still hadn't received our drinks. One of the workers was also sitting at a table next to us eating a plate of food like he had never ate in his life. It was disgusting, smacking his lips. Seriously made me gag and I don't have a weak stomach. So we decide to leave. As we are walking out, our waitress is standing up at the front doing nothing and still hasn't brought our drinks. Mind you, we were still the only customers in there. So upset with my experience. I just wanted some sushi and miso soup, guess not. read more
