Unfortunately, both entrees were severely lacking; ultimately wasting $30. Pad Thai - I ordered with shrimp and it came with burnt crushed peanuts and the flavor was off and much too sweet although I requested spicy level 1. Egg Rolls - The egg rolls were mostly wrapper as if they skimped on the filling. Service -- The guy at the register was cordial but the cook who brought the food was pleasant. TL/DR: You Can Teleport to Thailand from Valpo (review of Kin Khao) ---- Craving authentic Thai food, but don't want to head to the airport? Look no further and head over to Kin Khao. After doing some errands locally, we had a need for some bright flavors to counteract the gloomy moods that winter brings. Since moving to sleepier NW Indiana from downtown Chicago, I've always had a void of good Thai and general Asian food. I didn't look at the reviews beforehand, due to this being my friend's turn to pick a lunch spot, and she frequented their former location a few years back. After we were seated, we ask the server a few general questions, specifically about their 'heat scale', which was on a 1-5 scale. One of his first responses was that they use authentic chillies that are grown in the owner's garden, and that the owner/chef is from Thailand, and the Spice Scale is reflective of actual Thai standards, which is too spicy for the average American. My initial skepticism started to quickly unravel, as my Thai extended family members in Chicago always complain how Thai food is too 'sugary' stateside. We order a Shrimp Shumai to start, and both order the Green Curry lunch specials. I anticipated getting the conventional well-known premade/frozen shumai, but was throughly impressed when the server brought out fresh ones. At first bite, the flavors hit like a firecracker. These were actually made from scratch. This was REAL Thai food. 95% of any Asian restaurants that we've eaten at don't even bother with making their own dumplings, due to the frozen ones actually being 'good enough'. I also wanted to add more heat, and asked for some Sriracha or chili sauce. I expected a bottle of sriracha to come out as they typically do, but the server brought a small cup of chili sauce. The color was brighter, which made me think 'oh good, freshly opened bottle'. After tasting it, I was shocked again- the sauce was homemade. Again, most restaurants do NOT go this length, as Sriracha is to Chili Sauce as Kleenex is to Tissues. Run-of-the-mill Asian restaurants in the Midwest don't need to go this extra length, but they once again over-delivered on another small detail. The server confirms to me that nearly everything is made in-house, and I finally believe him. Next, we both were served our Green Curries, one at heat scale of 3 and the other at 4 (2 is their baseline). The presentation, size, ingredient quality, and flavor were immaculate. My friend was shocked to see the portion size and the amount of protein on her dish, and I was delighted with the virdant colors of the curry and vibrancy of the vegetables. The spice level was perfect for us, but it's certainly not for the faint of heart. This is not-your-average Thai, this is the real deal. After being blown away for the 3rd time, the chef/owner came out and asked us how everything was. The only thing that I could say was Thank You, but in Thai, as I knew that she would appreciate it so much more. She thanked me back in Thai without skipping a beat, and chatted with us for a good while, about some turmoils regarding their relocation. This woman is a marvel, and needs to be protected at all costs. Her restaurant is a cozy culinary portal to Thailand, which makes these miserable Midwest winters manageable. We ended our journey with a Thai Iced Tea and Thai Iced Coffee, both home-brewed and oh-so-good. Truly a bittersweet way to start our journey back home. Final verdict: 4.9/5 We'll be coming back at least weekly now, and would love to see some type of Liquor License here (especially BYOB) in the foreseeable future. An ice-cold Singha would have made this a true 5/5 for me. P.S. to all who disregard their spice level, order something too spicy, and ask for a refund/remake- get a grip. Everything tasted great. However I arrived 2.5 hours before closing and I felt like I was pushed out because I was given my check when I was only half way through my meal. The guy kept saying how it was slow all day, turned off the exterior lights and closed the restaurant. After I ordered my food their toddlers started crying and playing loud iPad games. Then who I assume to be part owner grabbed my check before i finished my meal assuming I already paid. I was looking for a relaxing place to wind down after working all day. If they wanted to close early I wish they told me before I ordered. When I left they were still supposed to be open for two more hours. Trendy little spot for some Thai food. They make your meals fresh after you order. Went with a girlfriend. The servers are kind and helpful and the food is super good. We got the Thai Spring Rolls for an appetizer. My friend ordered the Green Curry which came with rice and a miso soup since she got a lunch special. I got the Tofu Pad Thai which came with a salad since I also got the lunch special. I really appreciate that we, as the customers, are able to control the spice level. I do think they had a private parking lot although I did park in the street. There is plenty of street parking. read more

Wow, was this place good. I was blown away. First, it's adorable! It's in the basement of a giant house. It has a lovely little outdoor patio, so I will be back here again to eat outdoors in person. The outside has a lovely yard. The food is amazing. Really really great Thai Food. This is now one of my new favorite restaurants. Great staff. Very vegetarian, vegan, allergy friendly. I ordered all vegetarian food, and they double checked each dish to see if peanuts, eggs, unagi sauce, etc were okay. I would order everything again! Cashew Nut Tofu- fantastic. My favorite dish dish. Sweet and Sour Vegetables- fantastic. It was not deep fried, so it was actually healthier than I was expected. And surprisingly more delicious! Pad Thai tofu-decent. Hands down the best curry I've ever had, and that has been LOADS! Like wow. We started with soup during our first ever visit this evening. The Tom Kha. The creamy,citrusy, coconut broth was IMPRESSIVE! We loved it so much we ordered a couple more to bring home. The Penang curry was incredible, and the ingredients were fresh and cooked PERFECTLY like everything else. We brought home more curry for our son as well as this is his favorite style of cuisine. He tasted it after we turned in for the night so he left me a text that read "where on earth did you get that ?!!! Holy good!" Food is good but the atmosphere inside is some of the worst I've seen. Almost bad enough to make you wonder about the quality of the food. When you park your car you can see they are using a fleece dinosaur blanket to cover a back window as if this is some college student's apartment. When you first walk in you can see directly into the back- harsh fluorescent lights, rice cookers sitting near dingy old air conditioning vents, coolers, brooms. Why on earth they haven't at minimum installed a curtain to hide this from view is beyond me. And behind the register is even worse. Items piled on the floor and for some strange reason a package of maxi pads. Yes- maxi pads. Good to see that sushi has returned to the menu - but the make shift sushi prep area in the front that looks as though it is on a portable kitchen prep table doesn't inspire confidence. Overall- the food tastes good but after seeing the establishment I can't help but question the entire place and won't be returning even for take out. Given that the food tastes good I hope the owners might consider a place like Lincoln Kitchen where they wouldn't have to worry about the upkeep of a sit down restaurant and could focus on the food. read more

What a lovely spot! My wife and I just moved our family to the Valpo area and took advantage of our first date night here to visit Kin Khao (off the advice of friends). We loved everything about this place. Their outdoor seating is currently open and the owner was super friendly from the moment we arrived. When we started asking about non-meat options, he was proactive in asking us about vegan friendly options like removing the eggs from our dishes. We both ended up ordering pad Thai. Mine was tofu, hers was veggie. We also started with the shrimp dumplings. (we might cheat a bit with seafood on occasion) Thumbs up across the table for the food! Drove around twice to find this place!!! Didn't realize that it would be in a basement of an old house. Always looking for a good Thai place to try out and I can check this one off the list. Friendly staff and good food and spice level three is pretty spicy! We had the crab Rangoon's and tum yum soup for starter, which came quick. Rangoons were very good and tasted fresh and homemade. My sister ordered the wide rice noodles with chicken, and I had the Panang curry with shrimp. I had gotten mines a spice level 3 which was pretty spicy but the curry was a bit salty otherwise very good. Will be going back for sure read more
