Picked up lunch on 1/2 price sushi Tuesday. We also got a bento box with chicken teriyaki. The rolls were 2 Mexican rolls, 2 Crunchy Rolls, and spicy crunchy shrimp (?). Loved the Mexican and Crunchy roll (crab and asparagus w/ crunchies). The bento box had an average fried gyoza, but the chicken teriyaki was weird. Ate at Fuji in Hixson today with granddaughters. The restaurant is set up for Hibachi, but ALL of the chefs take a break at the same time. Granddaughters were disappointed that we were seated at a table instead of the grill. Food at Fuji is expensive and kids ask to go there for the show. Two of us ordered the ribeye steak and it was mushy rubbery texture with absolutely no flavor... no seasoning. We all ordered fried rice, but what we got did not taste like fried rice at all. The vegetables were cooked well, but no seasoning. The salads were wet and soggy. Our service was excellent. The server was on the ball and we didn't want to burden him with complaints.... He couldn't help if food was yuck. We all picked at our food... ate very little... and boxed it up for our dog. read more

we dined at this establishment Tuesday the 4th. To say the quality was horrible is putting it nicely. The food was undercooked, the drink machine was inoperable and the overall restaurant was old dirty and run down. it has been years since we been in there and now that we visited it we will never go there again. I have been going to this place since it opened. I used to LOVE to get sushi and a pint of draft on occasion here. Lately, though, it has not been a good experience due to TWO consecutive visits which brought on TWO bouts of food poisoning that brought down three adults, two children, AND A ONE-YEAR-OLD WHO ONLY HAD WHITE SAUCE AND FRIED RICE! I took the family there for one of my daughters' graduation night. She got sick, I got sick, her mom got sick. We all spent the next two days puking and pooping our guts out. CLASSIC FOOD POISONING. The same happened tonight with my wife, kids, and I. Sure, I should have known better than to come back for another dose of GI hell, but, like I said, I've been coming here for years with zero issues, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. If I pump $150-$250 into your business for food and service for my fam, the least you can do is not serve us iffy seafood in your sushi. I guess the extra cash is going to pay for that tricked-out Jeep Wrangler out front with adverts all over it as opposed to quality ingredients that won't potentially kill someone. It isn't even 1/2 price night tonight (we all know that's when they get rid of the stuff that's about to go bad, like a leftover night at home) and we were STILL served food that made people sick! We love this place but today the service is really, REALLY BAD!!!!! My husband's chicken fried rice came out, like, a half hour ago. Our drinks came out after that; after we'd asked about them twice. I've always went to Fuji in Hixson and got the food to go, this last week I took a friend there for her birthday. They told us we couldn't sit around the grill because it was only one chef, for a party already there. While at our table on the dining side, we noticed 3 different parties come in and sit at two different grills and be served. I get there 40mins later and apparently my sushi wasn't even put in and needs to be made... okay. You think they would try to rectify the situation by getting my sushi out quickly. Just yuck. First time trying this place. I'm pretty sure we were served a microwaved frozen dinner. Vegetables were soggy and inedible. Steak was overcooked. No one in my family of four enjoyed or finished our meal. We just paid the bill and left the food, it was awkward and gross. I have no idea how they have a customer base. read more

Just walked out from eating what will likely be our last meal at Fuji. We pop in every now to eat half off sushi. We've never been super impressed with the quality of the food, the atmosphere (or lack of) or the service. Tonight was definitely the worst experience we've had at Fuji in Hixson. The restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived. We ordered promptly yet our sushi took over 30 minutes to come out. While waiting for our food our waiter neglected to refill our drinks, check on us or reassure us that our food was on its way. When our sushi finally came out it was a weird lukewarm temperature almost like it had been sitting. The eel sauce we asked for was congealed and jelly like. From here on out we will be giving our business to Totto where we are never neglected, the food is always fresh, the service is outstanding and they understand what a good atmosphere is. I suggest that anyone else interested in quality Japanese cuisine do the same. It's worth the extra couple of bucks you will spend. read more

Absolutely horrible! Prices change depending on the day you order. Ex. Ordered Apple saki, last time was 7.50 for full bottle ordered half bottle this time and was 14.00... Our bill was switched with another patrons bill and were still overcharged after "correcting" it. Unquestionably the most disgusting, over priced, possibly spoiled sushi I have ever had. Contacted manager who didn't care and refused to give a refund. The food was delivered promptly within minutes of preparation and it tasted like week old grocery store sushi, but much smaller portions, if you can even imagine. We couldn't eat it. I offered to bring it back myself for a refund, but manager stood behind their food quality and refused a refund. It went in the trash. It was not fit for human, canine or feline consumption. Really surprising that any place that has such poor quality, poor service and zero concern for customer satisfaction can even stay open. Let's hope it goes out of business and a better restaurant moves in. read more

After seeing the other reviews on this site, I did not see any reason to give up one or two star of review. my mother and myself experiences here could not have been better. I was prepared to spend over $20 on sushi for us. But our server pointed out their half-price rolls. Now, she didn't have to do that. In fact, it could have affected her tip due to money. But it certainly didn't. Our Sushi came out pretty quickly. I've always enjoyed the flavor of Fuji's Sushi. I do believe them to be one of the better ones in town. We went to the bar for drinks, the bartender was missing so I'm assuming the manager made our drinks came over to make our drinks. Ordered a simple lemon drop. It was HORRIBLE. We had him make another one it tasted just as bad. It's a simple lemon drop and it tasted like rubbing alcohol. Our server ended up being very polite and accommodating. The management team here was incredibly lacking. Also they advertise a free birthday meal with purchase of 4 hibachi meals. But it's only $15 off. The only redeeming part was that the chef was very entertaining and fun. But then my chicken was undercooked when we finally got to eat (930). It was a very disappointing experience for me and my friends. I would give the other location in Chattanooga a chance, but I will not be returning to this one. Terrible service. We ordered Sushi to go. Total bill was $75. A total rip off! Portions were tiny, everything is crammed into one styrofoam to go box. We are missing what is on the menu as "salmon roe sashimi." What we got instead was a 2oz ramekin of awful salmon roe, no sashimi. I called and spoke to the manager and she said that was salmon roe sashimi. No, first off its nasty salmon roe from a can and second there is no sashimi. "No, you not understand," she says. I do in fact understand that sashimi is sliced fish, different from roe. No refund, no attempt to correct their mistake, just an argument. The rest of the sushi was mediocre at best. read more

The company was way better than the food. Stereotypical and cheesy, faded decor. Nice if ditzy server who seemed to know nothing about the menu, or sushi/noodles/Asian food in general - "Oops, yesterday was my day off - I guess we don't do that $0.99 thing I mentioned" . . . "What was that you said - hoy singe sauce?" and such. Mediocre food. The steamed pork gyoza were actually good, but nothing you shouldn't be able to get elsewhere (where the other items are also good) and the yellowtail nigiri (one of my staples) was decent and seemed fresh (enough? now I am mentally reviewing why I only ate one of the two pieces) - but the Philly roll (a sometimes fave but one I picked yesterday so I didn't belabor the process as he was ready) was more cream cheese than anything else, with several pieces having no avo at all. My cute date got the Japanese noodle bowl and while it was large, he reported that "it didn't have enough flavor [hence the unsuccessful request for hoisin] and it was ok, but not good enough to order again." I declined to try some when offered (why bother?). Also, no low sodium soy sauce on the table, just two bottles with different colored tops. Not how we rolled in the sushi/noodle places I worked - even Genki and Twist get that kinda thing right. Sadly, I am still completely underwhelmed at any of the Asian food spots I have tried around town - Totto being an exception except it still kinda creeps me out that they have that lunch buffet - so I will have to keep trying. But the boy was cute, so Fuji gets two not one stars. I brought my own atmosphere, I guess. read more

Other reviews have covered a lot of my complaints, so I won't go over them again. We went a couple of times when the place first opened and thought it was good. An improvement over Ichiban. But, sadly, there is no consistency here. Service has been poor every time. The first time I went, the waiter threw the check at us before we even finished eating. I reminded him that he was a commissioned sales person and perhaps we would like dessert, which would boost his tip. He looked a bit sheepish, but unapologetic. Drinks: hard to get 'em! You order your first round, it takes forever for them to arrive at your table. You want another drink and your waiter has disappeared. Finally order your 2nd round and again, you've practically finished your meal before your drink arrives. The food, on this fourth and final visit was mediocre at best. Either the quality of the food has suffered, or the hibachi cook was not that great ... probably a combination of both. Note: If you want to order appetizers, do NOT eat at the communal grill tables unless your group is the only one occupying the table. They throw your appetizers down AFTER they've served your soup and salad. I mentioned to my waitress that we did not want to be rushed and wanted to enjoy our appetizers first. Oh, well. To no avail. We spent $160 for 4 people and felt like we were eating at Micky D's. For all the fancy decor, this is not fine dining. I am disappointed at yet another local ho-hum dining experience. read more

This place is okay, I don't care for hibachi but if I must, I accept my fate (food coma). I remember when this place was an Italian restaurant, and then it was Sticky Fingers, I think...well now it looks like something glitzy. Love the decor in here, and I like that the hibachi tables aren't all closed into individual rooms. I wasn't expecting there to be a full Japanese menu here, which would explain the picturebook size and weight menu. In addition to hibachi there's sushi, teriyaki, udon, tempura, etc. They have plenty of drinks, and the prices are pretty fair. I had a glass of house Riesling, and it was 2 for 1. Even better! It took forever to get the drinks though because practically everyone else in my party ordered a beer that turned out to be out. My brother wanted Asahi, out. My mom wanted Yuengling Light, out. It was almost like, well what ISN'T out? The hibachi meals are pretty reasonably priced. Chicken and steak will run you $16.95 and if you're into fried rice, the upcharge for it is 99 cents. You get soup and salad beforehand of course. The soup definitely seemed like it was a beef broth, it was far too hearty to be miso. We laughed that they must have remembered Brick Oven because the bowl of soup contains a single rotini noodle. The salad was almost like ginger soup because there was far more dressing than lettuce, always the sign you are eating hibachi. So then it's the usual, here all the typical sauces, here's your fried rice, vegetables, shrimp...and then teriyaki noodles? Why do you have rice if you have noodles? They were good though, but talk about carb overload. I would take noodles over rice any day especially in this setting. There's nothing that really sets Fuji apart from other hibachi places. It's a lot of food, but it tastes like every other average hibachi restaurant...food covered in sauces and salt that you can't stop eating. The steak isn't the best (but I am spoiled by a place near me) but I always consider it a success if it doesn't involve a) picking off fat or b) being inedible. The staff is the reason I didn't enjoy fully enjoy myself though. Our chef was alright...he asked if it was our first time there, which it was. The rest of my family hadn't been to a hibachi restaurant since I was last in Chattanooga for my birthday, and we went to Ichiban. He had asked where we have been, and my dad said that, to which the chef responds, "well we speak English here." Ummm, what? They do at every other hibachi restaurant I've been to around here...in fact I've seen people get pissed off over not having a Japanese chef at one... He also sent sauce flying while serving the noodles and it burned my boyfriend's hand. Needless to say he wasn't that impressive. I also pretty much could never hear what he was saying even though I was pretty much directly in front of him. So basically the service leaves a lot to be desired. My boyfriend and I don't get fried rice, so it took forever to get the steamed rice, and the server wanted us to just dump it on our plates so she could take the bowls back. I don't eat all the rice that gets put in the bowls anyway, and I sure as hell couldn't after getting some noodles. So for some reason she didn't like me leaving half of it in the bowl and asked everyone else if they wanted the rest. It was weird and kind of tacky. And not even maybe 3 minutes after our chef left the table she was asking who wants a box. So then the boxes are sitting there while you're still trying to finish up. I try to accept you, hibachi places, but you make it so hard. I'd give you 2.5 stars but I'll round up because I'm feeling nice and the food was tons better than the other options for dinner that night. Minus 1. Not one star. PEOPLE! LISTEN TO THE YELP REVIEWS!!! I didn't. And I paid dearly. Ok, so that was overly dramatic. But it was bad. Once again I caved to the Mrs when she said, "Let's try someplace new." But that's another story. We were already thinking sushi and/or steak. We both thought about this place and it was close. (This one is the Hixson location) We were seated fairly quickly and my first impressions were good. I could see the Hibachi area on the right and the sushi/regular seating area on the left as you come in. A wall divides the two and all the way in the back appeared to be the sushi bar with some seating at the bar. A very young man came to wait on us and asked us for our drink order. He brought it out and asked if we were ready to order. We had a couple of questions about the menu. The Mrs. asked about a certain Japanese salad that was on the menu. You would have thought we were talking in Japanese. He attempted to describe it, then we could tell he was unfamiliar with that item. No big deal. I asked, "Do many people order that salad?" He said, "No, nobody really orders that." I laughed as I was surprised at his candor. Fine, so we ordered a seaweed salad and some miso soup. We all have had this stuff, so it will be easy to gauge the rest of the visit based on that. We also ordered a sashimi sampler and four rolls of sushi. (Alaskan Roll, Philly Roll, Spicy Crunchy Tuna/Crab, and sh!t roll, I think) My Miso soup was cloudy and strange. The seaweed salad was mushy and not crisp as it should be. There was excess water in the bottom of the bowl. Gross. We waited a good bit for it, about 30 minutes. When the waiter comes he has the rolls. #1 they are not put together very well. The prep looked sloppy. Some folks don't care about that, but I have seen sushi chefs that take pride in their art and I get enjoyment from that. Not here. The Alaskan roll looked like a Californian roll--because it was. We don't have anything against California or its rolls, just don't order them unless there is something on top-THUS the Alaskan Roll. The spicy crunchy roll was mushy as well, like an old honey comb in the middle. It should have been, I don't know, CRUNCHY? The sashimi sampler came out and there were a couple of surprises served up on that tray. First thing I noticed was that on one of the sashimi pieces, there was a green shimmer on the meat dead center. Yeah, like the shimmer you see on a fish you pull out of the lake. First time I ever seen that on sushi. We let that little guy just set there. While the Mrs was eating one of the pieces she noticed a fishy odor. Fresh high grade sushi shouldn't smell fishy. That can indicate improper storage and/or old product that the restaurant is trying to stretch out the life so they can reduce cost. So another strike. Then, the Mrs. took a bite out of another piece of sashimi and pulled it back out. We were able to extract not one, but two tiny fish bones. Come on! I know, some of you say "It's a fish, idiot!" I understand that there is always a chance for a fish bone to be in a fish, but one thing after another at this place. One of my pet peeves is to never have an empty glass at a restaurant. Well, I ran out pretty quickly. Finally the waiter came around to check on us. I told him the problems we were having. He said, "I'm sorry." That's it. Not, how can I make it right? or let me get the manager. Nothing. Pshhh. If I left a tip, it wasn't much. Of course, we needed something else to eat later. I will NEVER go back to Fuji and neither should you. Go to Ichiban by O'Charley's. Way better service and super fresh sushi. They do it right. read more

We've been coming here for about two years. The wait staff and management change frequently. This means you're constantly getting trainees, and (with the exception of a stellar few we've had), many seem to be new to food service. The quality of the food however, remains consistently high and the prices are more than competitive. These are the two things that keep us going back. We continue to support them because we would hate to lose such quality sushi in the area. read more

We've been to Fuji many times since they opened. This is our first time having any dissatisfaction. Everything was fine except the hibachi steak and chicken was cold. We will still be back though, we won't let one bad experience strike out all the other great ones. Just recently did their business start picking up. The parking lot was full for the first time tonight, since they opened. Maybe they weren't prepared for all the business, it seems as if they don't have enough servers tonight. Hibachi grill place, you've been to this sort of place before I'm sure. They do it well, above average for sure. The chefs are very playful and work hard to put on a good show, the food is excellent. I really like their "fuji roll" with the crispy lobster stuff on top. My children's favorite restaurant in Chattanooga. So we've been 4 or 5 times since moving here. Every time has been good, nothing ever wrong. Okay, okay, one time they messed up and grilled the wrong steak for me, I think a sirloin when I had ordered tenderloin. So they grilled up the tenderloin too and I got both. Hard to call that a negative. Please note, the Fuji over by 75 on the east side of town, off of Shallowford, is a hole and should be avoided.
