The restaurant is small, but the staff are friendly and provide prompt service. their Egg drop soup. is amazing, and the sushi is excellent quality for the price. I'm so happy I got to eat here today! Delicious food and a very clean restaurant. Our server and chef were wonderful. I had Sukiyaki Beef, fried rice, and hibachi grilled zucchini and onions. The starter was a refreshing garden salad with super yummy ginger dressing. Sukiyaki beef is so tender it melts in your mouth. Called for 40 minutes as I drove there to order take out, but they never answered. They had a few people waiting when I got there, but I've seen it much more crowded. Finally the host acknowledged me and I said I wanted to order take out. He snaps, "we're busy! it will be an hour". I said that's why I tried calling ahead. He seemed angry. Not my favorite. My daughter and I went for dinner and for her first hibachi experience. Soup was fine. Salad had a LOT of dressing but otherwise was typical. Our cook was not engaging and didn't do the fun routine that some do (like throwing food or the choo choo train), but I'm sure it gets old for them so I get it. The fried rice was just ok. The white sauce tasted off. The shrimp were great and plentiful. Our meals were easily enough for two more people, and I'm glad because our total for a child's meal and my dinner with water was almost $50 plus tip. I'll stick with Rice Boxx. read more

Deserve a zero star! The grill is too hot and the food is burning which the cook agrees with but continues to cook and ignore the fact we are not happy. Even after getting the manager and the cook tells her the grill is too hot she stares at our rice like we are crazy. She doesn't offer to fix it and tells us to just go. My oldest chose Ichiban for his birthday dinner mainly due to the fact his favorite sushi roll is served at the Hixson Pike location: the Spicy Crunchy Crab roll. We went on a Thursday night, so took a risk by not making a reservation, but the wait was minimal. They left a seat empty between parties which was nice. My son ordered two Spicy Crunchy Crab rolls and the chicken and steak; I ordered the fillet and shrimp - with double veggies. Oddly, our drinks, salad, and soup were served in styrofoam takeout containers but the sushi and main course on plates... Everything was delicious and shout out to our cook as those were the best cooked veggies I've had here. If you enjoy teppanyaki, you can't go wrong here read more

We were ordering pickup, so I tried calling. They didn't answer the phone so I decided to drive there. It's in a small shopping center, but back from the road. The sign on Hixson Pike is not large so watch carefully. Once you've been there though, it's easy. Parking is plentiful, but you'll need to cross a traffic lane to get to the door. The handicapped parking is next to the building on the end and very easy to get to. You also don't need to cross traffic so it's a great design. Walking in you go through a foyer with double doors, then into the restaurant. I was greeted right away and was able to place my order easily. The hostess also read everything back to me which was appreciated. I was told 45 minutes and they took my phone number to call me when it was ready. There is a long bench waiting area to the side. The sushi bar is at the end, although it was closed when I was there. They still do sushi, you just couldn't sit at the sushi bar. The main seating area is to the left. I wound up waiting outside since the weather was nice. After 45 minutes with no call, I went inside. I was told it would be another five minutes. I did receive the food in about five more minutes. The vegetarian hibachi plate was nicely done. There were plenty of vegetables and all were cooked properly. The fried rice was also done correctly. Be aware, there was a piece of shrimp included so this was not really vegetarian. If you have strict dietary requirements, make sure they are included when you order. The Suki Yaki beef was very good. The meat was cooked as requested and was very tender. All accompaniments were also cooked properly and very good. Ichiban is a bit of a splurge meal for us, but it is certainly worth the price. read more

My wife and I tried here recently and the place smells like a well used dishwasher. I pointed out a cockroach to a waiter and all she did was look around to make sure no one else was looking before stepping on it. No apologies or even a thanks as if I was doing them a solid. Then they didn't even have Sapporo which is a normal Japanese style beer. Seems as if they were out of many things. read more

I visited this Ichiban restaurant while in town with some of my friends. The general experience of hibachi places is as awesome as ever-- it's fun to watch the food being cooked and to see the cool tricks they do. Our hibachi chef was friendly and open to joking around with us. The steak here was really good and its quality genuinely surprised me. The portions are also very generous-- everyone had leftovers whether they liked it or not. That being said, any items besides the meat was pretty mediocre. The fried rice was lacking in flavor and the miso soup tasted like salty water. My least favorite part was how the sushi was room-temperature-- which doesn't sound like a big deal, but it's like trying to eat a cold steak. The wait was also pretty long even on a weeknight. I think this place is a fun experience for anyone to try but I can't imagine myself coming here often read more

We'll never come to this place again. Went there, told them we were having sushi only, they asked us to sit, wait was about 10 minutes. Waited 15+ minutes only to have them try and sit us at a hibachi table with a bunch of other people when they clearly had at least 30 empty seats and about 8 empty tables in the sushi area. We told them we did not want a table with strangers and just wanted sushi. They said they don't sit people in the sushi area any longer, so we left and went to Hokkaido and had an absolutely wonderful lunch at a private booth. Horrible service right away. Sushi bar closed because they say a 6 foot barrier needs to be retained, but within 2 feet of the sushi bar, strangers sat side by side awaiting seating at dining tables. They served some people drinks while they waited for a table at the same time they refused others ostensibly because there "wasn't a bartender on duty." Former patron, never again. Absolutely terrible experience. We showed up 45 mins before lunch ended, waited 10 mins before someone finally walked out and told us we could not be served today since they were so close to closing. It was only 1:25PM!?! Never coming back to this place again as I am having to deal with crying kiddos after talking this place up to them. This place has gone down hill quick. It's always a good time at Ichiban. There are 2 Ichiban restaurants within a couple of miles. One has sushi, one doesn't. Both have very good hibachi. Basic Hibachi, cooks will entertain at as they prepare. Fried rice is extra. Sake is amazing as always. This is a great group outing. read more

Air was on blowing directly down on everyone at our table. Could not get meal prepared fast enough to eat before it was cold on our plates due to the cold air blowing. Not sure what the issues and asked more than once to turn fan off or turn temperature up but nothing was done. Our table had a bad experience here. read more

Went to dinner with a friend and she really digs this place. I've been a couple of times and it's good. I'm not super in to the grill-side show and all that. People here seem to love these types of hibachi-style restaurants. Nothing wrong with them, I just don't get the appeal really. We sat in the sushi bar area as we just wanted to be able to chat and have some dinner. We were told several times by a few different people that the hibachi plates would take at least 45 minutes. Ok, we got it. I guess I understand that some people may expect it right away and have complained, hence the notifications, but it was a bit of overkill. Why it takes that long to grill up some meat and veggies is beyond me, but that's besides the point. I did order a couple of sushi rolls, California rolls and Shrimp Tempura roll. They came out fairly quickly, which was good. They tasted alright, nothing spectacular. I did notice that they weren't very cold. I get the tempura one might not be super cold, but the California roll should have been. It was room temp. They didn't taste bad and I didn't get sick, but the expectation is that the roll would be chilled. My friend ordered a coke and it took our server several reminders to get the coke. Now we were the only people in this dining area so not sure why he had a hard time remembering to bring that out. We got the typical starters with the hibachi dinners, "salad" and "soup". I put those in quotations because really the salad consisted of a small handful of bagged salad mix with an overly generous amount of some type of sweet ginger dressing. The soup was supposed to be some type of broth, but to me it tasted like dirty dish water. I passed on that one after one sip. Our hibachi dinners came out and they were nice and hot. I do like stir-fried meat and veggies with some rice, but I don't see what the fuss is and why it's so expensive, especially if you're not sitting at a hibachi table. I got filet and shrimp and scallops. It was tasty. Of course it comes with the much loved white sauce. I really don't get the appeal of the white sauce here in Chattanooga. People order so much of it that places should just bring out a big bucket of it. LOL. Sure, I dribbled a little on my plate, but I really don't understand the folks that just drown their plate in it. You're just tasting sweet mayo, nothing else. Overall, it was a decent meal, though I did pay like $50 for my entire meal. I could have eaten at at much nicer place for that amount. I've given this place 3 chances. We've enjoyed many meals here over the past 20 years. It's still our favorite for family dinners, even for Christmas parties! We can enjoy the show, and dispense with small talk (co-workers LOL). They have a nice sushi dining area as well, with plenty of room for parties too. I love the Tennessee Roll and filet with shrimp. Hubby raves about the huge, juicy scallops with filet. Sushi roll prices are reasonable and fresh made in front of you. I'm uncomfortable with sushi pre-made. You're gambling on how many people touched your package. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because of watered down (ice melted) drinks. I love ice! We're in the South and it's hot! It's so cheap too to fix it. Not for the hibachi show, but for the sushi. We have eaten sushi in a lot of places in Chattanooga, but this is the best. When I say the best, I mean the freshest sushi for the price. Sure there's fresh sushi at other places, but the service here, along with the freshness, and the price, makes it the best sushi restaurant in Chattanooga as far as I'm concerned. When we walk in, they usually recognize us and seat us at the table that we usually sit at. The waiters usually even know what we're having to drink before we ask. You can order rolls of sushi, or get their large/small platter of sushi, sashimi or you can have soup or seaweed salad prior to your meal. A couple of times we have been in the hibachi part of the restaurant and ordered sushi as a side. Whatever your reason you choose to go to this restaurant, do yourself a favor and order an Alaskan roll or red Dragon. Love this place!!! read more

THIS IS MY FAVORITE JAPANESE HIBACHI GRILL I've been going to this Ichiban while visiting my grandparents since the early 90's and have always had fond memories of the food and overall dining experience. The service has always been fast and friendly with the preperation turned itno a show by their skilled chefs. Onion volcanoes, knife flipping, egg juggling and even more to keep everyone oohing and awwing. I always get a double or even triple portion of the fried rice and take some home if there's any leftover. It's just awesome. Go with the surf and turf combo and it's all good. read more

Geez the portions are large! The seaweed salad serves at least 2! I have gotten sushi to go twice from here and couldn't be happier. Everything is fresh and on the second visit they gave me all the sauces in a cup instead of on the sushi so it would stay fresh. I love that because I literally ordered enough food for 3 meals. I would like a few more rolls that aren't either fried or with cream cheese, but if not the ones they have are pretty darn good. I'm happy this place isn't far from home either! The only initial shock was there is a second one on 153 and I wasn't sure which one I called at first when going to pick up the food. Nope, the one on Hixson Pike. I will try their hibachi at some point but it's hard to deviate from the sushi. read more

Okay, beyond not being very happy that I got squirted with a water gun, this was actually a decent hibachi experience. I try to avoid ever coming to places like this because I'd rather have other food for the price range...except this is Chattanooga, so what I know as being over $20 is $16 here. Sure the drink list is far less impressive but foodwise, it can't be beat. I had steak and chicken and I was amazed at how well cooked the steak was. It could give the only hibachi place I'll touch in Atlanta a run for its money, seriously. It was cooked medium like I wanted, and it tasted even better than the steak I had made a couple days before. Of course I didn't use butter, but there was more to this than butter! They charge a dollar more for fried rice if that's your thing, but if you do get steamed rice you will probably end up with a bit of the fried rice anyway. The soup and the salad are nothing special, as you'd expect with hibachi. That's a waste of stomach space anyway. The chef, I wish I remember his name, but it was hard to hear over the ventilation fan, was very likable and amusing, and if he hadn't been so nice I wouldn't be giving 4 stars after being sprayed in the face with water post-"Happy Birthday" singing, you know? Speaking of "Happy Birthday," this is one of those places to go for the occasion (although now you see you may not want to reveal it to the chef hahaha). If you have at least 3 other people with you on the day, the birthday person's meal is free. Then, afterwards they bring out a plate with a big slice out of a pineapple and an orange, and "Happy Birthday" is sung again. They also have sushi but my brother says it's not that good...that was pretty apparent by the absolute lack of people dining in the sushi bar area while we waited for a table. Also this is their only location over here now. The original one on 153 is gone now, since that shopping center is pretty dead and this one is so close to that spot anyway. read more

Granted, I'm a sucker for this fat knights of the hibachi round table style dining experience, but this food is amazing, it really is. Get the hibachi steak, fried rice, and alllllllllllll the white sauce and you can thank me later. I really love the atmosphere of this restaurant, too. Sure, it's not flashy, it's outdated Japanese decorations and dimly lit but not in a mood lighting sort of way, but it's always warm in here, the size is cozy and not overwhelming, the bathrooms are clean, and the 25 cent York patties on the way out the door are a welcome touch. read more
