Because I missed out on the bento boxes on my last visit, I arrived at Fujiya shortly after they opened. Good plan! There were already customers milling about the refrigerated section. There were many bento boxes to choose from. I grabbed a teriyaki chicken box and held on tightly. The box had several goodies in it. Pieces of teriyaki chicken, chicken meatball, broccoli, sticky rice, edamame, mushroom, fish cake, pickled daikon, beans, potato salad, lotus root & a gelatinous square of something. I like that bento boxes offering a small sample of everything. I also got a Bonito sticky rice wrapped in seaweed which was slightly sweet and salty. Bonito is a predatory fish. Dessert was a pancake sandwich with green tea filling. Scrumptious! Staff in there are friendly and sweet. The market has a supply of Japanese goods for cooking and snacks as well. I had no idea this Japanese grocery store existed! I wanted to try a different matcha brand, and my mom suggested I search for a Japanese grocery store. So the next day (Friday) we checked it out around 12:30pm. It is located in a small shopping plaza with limited parking. Fortunately there was one empty spot right in front. There were a couple of people inside enjoying some lunch, and a few browsing the aisles. It's quite a small space with just a few aisles. There was also a vending machine with Japanese bento boxes (lunch boxes), but it did not appear to be in service that day. We browsed every aisle, finding a variety of things like chopsticks, sushi-making tools, small gifts (keychains, stickers), sake bottles, rice, snacks, sauces, bottled drinks, and frozen seafood. By the register, there is a refrigerated case with a few pre-packaged vegetables and dessert options (made in Japan), and another case with freshly made bento boxes. According to my mom, their pricing for groceries was decently priced and pretty much in line with other Asian markets. There wasn't a lot of matcha powders to choose from, but I did get one to try. My mom was able to find a set of longer chopsticks for cooking that she had been wanting. Also got some cute sushi stickers as a gift. There was a guy and a girl behind the checkout counter, and both were friendly and polite. This isn't a store that I would frequent, but I might stop in again if I'm in the area, and perhaps try a bento box! read more

Stumbled upon Fujiya Market and decided to check it out as we drove by on our way to Angie's. It has your basic Asian groceries, and they even have a small assortment of onigiri, which I didn't get a picture of because 2 people were talking and hovering over them. I want to say they were around $2 and some change. They have a small selection of plushie keychains and some other anime stuff near the door. They also had a cool frozen food bowl machine near the entrance, which I was tempted to try, but I was omw back to the airport. I can't comment on the service because I didn't buy anything, and no one greeted me when I came in. I think the prices here are high. It's in a corner strip mall with ample parking shared by other businesses. I might try the vending machine on my next visit. read more

When I need some Japanese grocery and I can't find it elsewhere say at Mekong or 99 Ranch or H Mart, I will come here to see if I can find what I am looking for. I also like coming here for their fresh ready made items. That's probably my favorite section in most Asian grocery stores I visit. I came in here on a Sunday at noon and there were massive amounts of people waiting for the fresh food items, wowsers! I did end up getting a small nori bento and it was delicious and affordable. I love pickled gobo and seaweed! And this place does it right. It comes with a small piece of grilled salmon and fish tempura. I also was finally able to find my favorite sakura wrapped mochi (I used to get these easily in NYC) and finally finally found them here on this visit. Yea! I also love that they have fun trinkets here from Japan and many other items imported from Japan, so it's a nice treat to come in and browse. They get one star deducted because they have limited hours but I guess that is also their charm too, makes it a nice treat to come in here to shop when they are open! Arriving soon after opening is important to be able to choose from the variety of bento boxes, which were so reasonably priced. I like to come here for a quick cheap meal sometimes when I'm in the area and not wanting to spend much money. The prepared lunches are insanely well priced and filling, and the staff is always super friendly. I usually get the one with the rice and the salmon and nori on top. The other items they sell in the store look pretty good as well, mostly packaged goods and drinks with a little produce area next to the lunches. I enjoyed shopping here. I've been 'collecting' Japanese food recipes for a few months and made the long trip to the area to enjoy a Japanese meal at Full Moon. Then over to Fujiya to shop for ingredients that I can't get near me. Umeboshi, kombu, bonito and seaweed. Furikake and togarashi, as well as light miso and Japanese curry mix. All kinds of delicious foods I can make now! The two people working in the store were very helpful. I'll definitely be back to replenish my supplies. And I'll try to buy a meal while I'm there! read more

Fujiya is a Japanese Grocery Store in Tempe Arizona. It carries all of the popular Japanese grocery items like nori seaweed, curry paste, Calrose rice, soy sauce, ajinomoto, edamame, etc. They even sell fresh fish. A big plus that sets them over the other Japanese grocery stores in Maricopa County is that they offer a good selection of fresh bento boxes daily. I really like this small Japanese Market. They had tables set up on one side of the store where you can order food from the kitchen. They did not have any menus for us to look at but I was told they had good ramen which are only served on Saturdays. They also have prepackaged bento boxes and onigiri which looked appetizing. Definitely expensive for some things since they are most likely imports , but the assortment of Asian goods (mostly Japanese and some others) is perfect and makes it all the worth while when you're trying to cut back on food and make things more delicious and filling. It really is quality over quantity. They always greet you and treat you with respect. Not too much to say about the interior other than looking like a generic market but again assortments and their service is what makes it worth while to shop here for some stuff. read more

Irashaimase! "Welcome" is what you hear as the clerks greet you in Japanese when you walk through the door of this authentic Japanese market. This is your typical little mom and pop shop hole in the wall. The inside is nothing fancy by any means. The building is aged and plain on the interior with a few posters lining the inside walls. It's dim inside with a few fluorescent lights illuminating the place and almost looks like it's closed from the outside. The equipment and shelving is dated and looks like it's been there for decades. But If you are looking for some uniquely Japanese food items, then you might want to stop in to see what things you recognize from your anime collection. Everything you need to have a night in with your friends for a Japanese dinner, you can find right here. I mean, they have tubs of Masago! Like, c'mon, so you want to make some fancy California rolls, look no further! One of the most uncommon items I came across was NATO. I don't know one other store in Arizona that carries it. Nato is like the ultimate authentic item. So authentic that most people wouldn't eat it! I first started coming regularly because they have bento and onigiri which suited my lunch cravings. My favorite are the curry with chicken katsu and the unagi don. The bento are not cooked fresh and in fact, I think they contain mostly defrosted with other ingredients combined to make it complete. But it's not like you can find these at your local supermarket. There's quite a variety of snacks and desserts to that will take you straight back to Japan. Don't forget the drinks. And, yes, they have alcohol. Not much in the way of fresh produce except a couple items. The owner is diligently working there everyday. I don't know his story, but not once have I see him smile. I guess it can be kind of depressing working those 4 plain walls everyday, except Monday, because they're closed. read more

Did you know that Japan is made up of 6,852 islands? I haven't stopped into Fujiya Market in a few good years and when I popped in on Friday for some snacks, I was surprised. This place looks so empty! I remember when there use to be a wall full of beauty and hair products, shelves filled with alcohol, an impressive display of toys from Re-Ment and Poppin' Cookin', et cetera. Now it seems like the shelves are barely being stocked. Even the pre-made bentos and rice ball collection seems relatively smaller. Regardless, this place still has a lot of goods for you to browse if you're in the area but for me, I think I'll stick with other international markets closer to Chandler. read more

This is a little gem. I only came to see if they have chestnut dorayaki. I did not know about the bentos! Yum. Saba mirinyaki :) There are a bunch of other types too. I got there right when they opened and it was all very fresh. The rice was still warm. Lost of snacks, noodles, sauces, rice, and drinks here. I love my Japanese food and when I need to satisfy my need for it, when I'm in Phoenix, I always think of Fujiya Market. They have all the basic necessities to cook Japanese food. All the snacks and drinks that I grew up with, I can find here. If you can't cook, they offer an array of daily made bento boxes for you to eat. But, you better get here quick! Otherwise, you'll find out that they'll sell out pretty fast. The last time I came here, it was on a Saturday. At opening, there were 12 people in line ahead of me, where the bentos were stacked. I saw 2 guys walk out with, at least, 5 bentos each. The bentos are also a college kid's budgeted dream. The price is a pretty good selling point. Parking is small, but I've never had a hard time finding a spot. Staff is fairly friendly. Overall, this ranks a 3-star in my book. For a market, it's just hella basic, when I compare it to all the other Japanese markets that I've gone to. read more

- Updating my review for the ramen - And wow is the ramen good! I wasn't expecting much but for the paltry sum of $6 (If my memory serves me correctly) I got a bowl of Miso Ramen served a slice of pork, ginger, seaweed, and an egg. Excellent rich broth, perfectly chewy noodles, all served up with the condiments listed above made it a pretty awesome dish. I also drank all the umami filled broth without shame. ^^ I'd say the ramen here is as good as Cherry Blossom's downtown at a much cheaper price Even though it was pretty early on Saturday the parking lot was full and the ramen sold out 30 min after I got there with my friend. Though... early for me is 11:00 am lol. You won't regret waking up early for noodles! read more

I have to admit, somewhat to my embarrassment, that my knowledge of Japanese food and drink is limited to what my grandmother and my parents fed me. I also recognize that much of what I ate was a fusion of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Hawaiian flavors. That being said, I think that Fujiya Market and Arai bakery are great locations to find most things Japanese. Their selection is fairly broad with many things people are looking for although they are lacking in a few "fresh" products. Tea, spices, pickles, dried fish, noodles and candies are plentiful. They also have a bento bar where you can pick up delicious meals for take out. Now right next door is Arai bakery. I didnt get any photos this time but it does have some tasty baked goods. Fujiya market is just a mile west of the ASU Tempe campus and literally, one off ramp away from the airport. Very easy to find but do check their hours before heading over. I love Japan and lived there for over 10 years and this is the closest thing to 7/11 or Family Mart. It's kind of small and one thing I wish they had was more bento and onigiri. By the time I show up, most of it is already gone. It is not expensive though and it reminds me of home. read more

Been coming here for a decade now to get Japanese snacks and drinks. It was a convenient bike ride from the dorms at ASU and I still come for the great lunch bentos. The bento choices are karaage chicken, fried fish, salmon, etc. and are a good value. On Saturday mornings they prepare homemade ramen which is also delicious and a great value but there are limited servings available. All of their food is made in small batches so timing is key to get what you want before it's sold out! read more

The main reason I go here is for the bento boxes (see example pic). Made fresh every day, and when they're gone, they're gone. On my way home from work it's a toss up whether there will be any left when I get there at 5:30. I would by no means call them spectacular, but they're good enough that I stop in every couple/few weeks I like to pick up some of the Nori Maki Arare as well (see pic) One thing I wish they had more often is the Spam and Egg onigiri (see pic).
